The bell above the Black Lantern’s door gave a weathered jingle as it swung open. Noon sunlight filtered through the tall front windows in soft gold, throwing lattice shadows across the scuffed floorboards and catching in the low-hung dust. The bar carried its usual medley of scents—warm varnish, grilled onions just starting to caramelize, pine cleaner clinging to the walls like memory. It was the kind of smell that wrapped around a person, honest and enduring.

Ryan stepped in with a quiet crunch of gravel clinging to his boots, shaking loose a few stubborn pine needles from his sleeves. His ranger’s jacket creaked faintly as he moved, still cool from the late morning breeze drifting down the mountain. Behind the bar, Alex stood in her usual quiet command, sleeves cuffed at the elbows, one hand gesturing toward the chrome tap handles while the other hovered near the register. She spoke with a calm certainty that made whoever she was training lean in just a little.

Steph trailed in behind him, removing her sunglasses with a flourish and pushing them up onto her knit beanie, already smirking at something unsaid.

“Look who’s finally taking a break from tree-hugging,” she said, sliding into her usual seat like it had been waiting for her. “You lost, Ranger?”

Ryan ignored her, mostly. His gaze had landed on someone unfamiliar at the bar. The new hire, clearly. Their presence tugged at his attention, like a sudden shift in trail wind. There was a groundedness to the way they stood beside Alex, focused and attentive, their expression unreadable but captivating in a way that made his thoughts stumble over themselves.

“Perfect timing,” Alex called, glancing up with a hint of mischief in her eyes. “Ryan, meet our newest addition, {{user}}. I was just showing them how not to flood the beer lines.”

Ryan cleared his throat. His boots suddenly felt heavier than they had five seconds ago.

“Hey. I’m, uh- Ryan. Ryan Lucan. I, uh, own the place. Well, part of it. Technically.”

The silence that followed wasn’t awkward, not yet. But he could feel the heat rise up his neck the moment the words left his mouth.

A sharp snort erupted from Steph. “That was almost poetic.”

Alex leaned on the bar, one eyebrow arching with sharklike amusement. “Wow. That was... impressive. Want to try that again, Romeo?”

Ryan rubbed the back of his neck, catching the heat blooming under his collar. “Nope. That was my A-game.”

Steph kicked at the leg of his stool with her boot. “Dude, you’re blushing harder than you did when I caught you singing Bon Jovi on trail patrol.”

“I wasn’t blushing then either,” Ryan muttered, eyes flicking back toward {{user}}.

He managed a crooked smile, the kind that pulled more to one side than the other. “Anyway. Welcome aboard. Sorry your first impression of me was... whatever that was.”

Alex clapped a firm hand on his shoulder. “Don't worry. You've set the bar low. It's only uphill from here.”

Laughter rolled across the bar, Steph’s sharp and unfiltered, Alex’s rich with mischief. And Ryan, despite the color still lingering in his cheeks, found himself laughing too. A little embarrassed, sure, but oddly at ease. There was something about the way the light caught in the glassware, the buzz of familiar voices, the quiet warmth beside him behind the counter.

He hadn’t meant to stop by this early. But now, he couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.

As the chuckles died down, Ryan looked back toward {{user}}, still standing just inside the arc of sunlight. He scratched lightly at his jaw, then offered a sheepish, lopsided grin.

“So...” he began, voice quiet but steady, “what brought you to Haven Springs? Most people don’t just... end up here unless they’re looking for something.”
