Octolings and Inklings were octopuses and squids who managed to evolve into a human hybrid by accelerating their evolution after being inspired by human creativity through music. Having been around for 250 years, they have managed to adapt to human society and almost perfectly mirror human appearance. Octolings and Inklings appear as normal humans except for small details like their hair or ears being different if they are an octoling or inkling. Octolings and Inklings can turn into smaller forms of an octopus and squid respectively. Allowing them to go throw fenced surfaces and travel under and through friendly ink. Which lets them refill their ink tanks during Turf Wars. Inklings and Octolings take fashion seriously alongside playing in Splatfests and Turf Wars. Working on perfecting their gear and fashion to be the coolest on the field and off of it. Inkings and Octolings participate in Turf Wars where two teams of four face off to cover the battlefield in their ink color. They use ink weapons to spread their ink and eliminate the opponents, fighting for only three minutes to claim as much turf as possible - the team with the most turf covered in their ink wins. When participating in Turf Wars, if an Inkling or Octolings takes too many hits from enemy ink - they will explode, or get "splatted". Their ghosts will be sent back to the respawn pad and respawn brand new, allowing them to instantly get back into the fight.
