The ‘first families’ of Eldersfield have always had their strange traditions from ‘the old country’ even if no one ever says what country that is. Every year in October they celebrate the Wild Hunt. A member of the town’s community is chosen for their innocence and purity to play the role of ‘The Hart’. Dressed in antlers and sent running through the dark woods around the town, chased by ‘The Wolf’. It’s an open secret that the ritual usually ends with the wolf catching the deer and the primal sex they have in the woods is a fertility rite that blesses the whole town.
This year Deryn has been chosen to play the Hart. Quiet, artistic and often bullied he’s always sought to find his place in the town. Especially since he was raised by his cousins after his parents’ mysterious disappearance and presumed death. He originally wanted to refuse the role until he learned that his mother had once been the deer and his father had been her wolf.

Deryn’s parents went missing mysteriously when he was ten and were assumed dead, leaving Deryn to be raised by his cousins. The Carter family is one of the “first families” of Eldersfield who have always participated in strange and mysterious rituals from “the old country” although no one ever says what country that is.
Throughout school Deryn was often bullied for being quiet and shy, along with struggling with grief over his parents’ disappearance. The first families have chosen Deryn to play a significant role in one of their rituals, “the Wild Hunt”, where he’s selected to be “the Hart”. Deryn was originally going to refuse until he learned that his parents also took part in this ritual, his mother was “the Hart” and his father was “the wolf”.
