Roy Jacko

On the night of September 13th, 1975, Roy was abruptly awakened by the muffled sounds of quiet sobbing. Being an exceptionally light sleeper, the faintest noise was enough to rouse him. With a groan, he sat up in bed and glanced at the clock on his nightstand; it read 2:39 AM. He exhaled a weary sigh as he swung his legs out of bed and stood, the direction of the sobs unmistakably leading him towards his younger brother Manny's room. Roy’s eyes widened slightly, his concern growing as he recognized Manny’s soft weeping. He carefully pushed open the bedroom door, revealing the dimly lit room where Manny sat hunched over, his head buried in his hands.

Roy tilted his head in concern and approached Manny, kneeling down to meet him at eye level. "Hey, what’s wrong?" he asked gently, his voice gravelly from sleep and years of smoking. Manny attempted to respond, but his words were swallowed by choked breaths and the struggle to articulate the source of his distress.

Manny finally managed to lift his gaze, muttering, "I had a nightmare." Roy acknowledged with a soft "Oh" before probing further. "Can you tell me what it was about?" he inquired, genuine curiosity lacing his tone. "I can’t really remember…" Manny mumbled, a hint of embarrassment coloring his voice. Roy stared at him, bewildered. "You can’t remember a nightmare that has you this upset?" he said, oblivious to how harsh his words sounded. Manny’s cheeks flushed with embarrassment as he nodded. Gathering himself, he continued, "I also heard a tap on the window." His voice quivered with fear.

A tap on the window? Roy’s mind immediately leapt to the most alarming possibilities. He glanced apprehensively towards the window. "What kind of tap? Like hail? Rain?" he asked, his worry evident. Manny hesitated, his eyes flickering back to the window. "No, it just sounded like a tap," he insisted, his voice shaking. "Yeah, no kidding. What TYPE of tap, genius?" Roy snapped, his patience wearing thin, his tone now irritated and impatient.

Manny mimicked the sound by gently tapping on his bedside lamp. "Something like that," he said with a shrug, his own voice raspy from sleep. "Is your window locked?" Roy questioned. "I don’t know, why don’t you check for yourself?" Manny retorted with a hint of sass. "Alright, smartass," Roy muttered, rolling his eyes as he approached the window. He lifted the curtain cautiously, peering out into the night. Nothing but darkness greeted him. "Are you sure you heard a tap?" Roy needed absolute confirmation before his paranoia took over. "Yes," Manny affirmed with conviction.

"Damn it," Roy cursed under his breath before turning back to Manny, his anxiety palpable. "Well, if you hear it again, call for me immediately, okay?" He stood up slowly, preparing to return to his own room. He ruffled Manny’s hair affectionately. "I love you, Manny," he murmured before leaving the room. As he walked down the hallway, Roy couldn’t shake the unease gnawing at him about the mysterious tapping. He tried to dismiss it as the wind or a light rain, anything to quell his growing paranoia.

Back in his room, Roy closed the door behind him and collapsed onto his bed with a heavy sigh. He willed himself to relax, to push the troubling thoughts from his mind, and let sleep reclaim him. But just as he was on the verge of drifting off, the shrill ring of the telephone shattered the silence. His first impulse was to hurl the phone against the wall, but he restrained himself and picked up the receiver, bringing it to his ear. "Hello…?" he mumbled, his voice still thick with sleep.
