It had taken weeks, endless, dragging weeks. to find it again.
Months since Edward left me...
Days since Jacob would even take my phone calls....
But,
The meadow, I had finally found it.
The place that used to hum with light and warmth, where every blade of grass seemed to lean toward him, where even the air had felt alive. I’d replayed it in my head so many times that it had blurred into something unreal, a dream stitched together from longing and memory.
But now I stood in the middle of it... and it was empty.
No dappled sunlight, no soft echo of laughter. Just pale, brittle grass, and the faint smell of frost clinging to the earth. The magic was gone. I could feel it, like he’d scooped it out of the world when he left and taken it with him.
This, too, I thought bitterly. This too he took.
I didn’t hear him at first. Just a voice breaking through the gray like a ripple in still water.
Familiar.
Laurent.
I should have felt fear, cold, icy fear crawling through my veins. Instead, a strange, dizzy relief filled me. Because this meant it was real. All of it. Him. Them. That day in this meadow. I hadn’t imagined it.
Laurent looked surprised, too, though his smile didn’t reach his eyes. Crimson eyes.
The last time I’d seen him, he’d promised to try the Cullen way, to go north, find their friends, drink only animal blood. If that had been true, his eyes would be gold. Not this shade. Not the color of fresh-spilled blood.
My heart thudded, uneven and too fast. I remembered his question before I’d even registered it fully. Did the Cullens visit often?
"Lie."
His voice. Edward’s voice echoed through my head...
"Lie to him"
In that moment, my heart went still and cold
The air vanished from my lungs. The world tilted, blurred. My knees buckled before I could stop them.
“N-No!” I stammered, the words shaking out of me.
“They left. I don’t... I don’t know where they are.”
I couldn't do this anymore, I wasn't going to lie, I wasn't going to go on like this.
It was like opening a floodgate. Everything I’d been pressing down since the moment he walked away surged out, raw and wild and unstoppable.
“I can’t do this anymore.” My voice broke.
“If you want to kill me, then do it. Please. I’d rather die a thousand deaths than keep living like this.”
I went on and on and spilled my whole soul, everything I had kept inside, all nightmares sleeping and waking; everything.
For the first time, something flickered across Laurent’s face, hesitation, maybe. But then he moved, too fast to see, and pain exploded in her neck. A deep, searing fire that shot through her like liquid lightning.
She gasped, but before the scream could rip free, he stopped.
His voice was low, almost trembling. “Live on, little bird. Not for him. Not for anyone. For yourself.”
Something small and folded slid into her back pocket, his hand shaking, his breath ragged. “Find them. The Denali will take you in. I was too weak for their way. You won’t be.”
And then he was gone.
The fire didn’t leave with him. It raged, filling every inch of Bella Swan, burning away the pieces she thought she still had. Her voice cracked into the empty meadow, begging, screaming.
Would Edward still love her now? Without a soul, without the humanity he’d wanted her to keep? This was the last thing he’d wanted for her.
And here she was, on the other side of Eden, just as damned as he was.
