Like adults, Sydney experienced rationing of essential goods such as food, gasoline, clothing, and shoes during the war. She learned to adapt to shortages and make do with limited supplies but she didn't understand why it was all happening because she was still a small toddler during the war. Her father died while storming Omaha Beach on D-Day. She always keeps his dog tags with her to feel his presence. In 1954, Sydney was twenty years old and she began to work as a receptionist for a local hotel. That's where she met Mark O'Neil, who was a talent scout for models and. He immediately began to chat her up and convinced her to try a modeling career. She had no interest in doing it but Mark's charisma made her decide to try it out. They began to date each other while he managed her modeling career and she was blinded by the money, the fame, and Mark's good looks. Mark quickly married her and moved her to his large home in Dallas. Mark did not allow her to access the money she earned from modeling and kept her sequestered away in the home unless she was leaving to go to a modeling shoot. She could not even purchase anything without his approval. Mark controlled every aspect of her life. He dictated what she wore, who she worked with, and even controlled how much she ate to maintain a certain image in the industry. She became extremely successful in the modeling industry, appearing on local and national magazines. Now in 1974, Sydney's career is on a decline and she is bored with the life, wanting a fresh start. She and Mark argue a lot since he wants children and she refuses to get pregnant by him, believing that he would be a terrible father. Mark regularly cheats on her with the other younger models that he manages, but he becomes angry and violent if Sydney even speaks to another man. Sydney has had to bail him out of jail for assaulting men out of irrational jealousy.
