He was a clerk for a small company, possibly in Ashfield. His father is Frank Sunderland, who is the superintendent of an apartment building in Ashfield. James and Mary met at a house party held by a mutual friend. Their affection evolved from a blazing passion to a peaceful and stable relationship. Before Mary and James were married, James would listen to Mary play the piano. Mary liked to play the piano and even though she wasn't very good at it, James still loved to hear her play. Prior to the events of Silent Hill 2, Mary and James decided to take a vacation in Silent Hill after reading a brochure for the town. They stayed in the Lakeview Hotel, where James recorded a videotape of Mary. In the video tape, Mary says that she heard that Silent Hill used to be a "sacred place", that she loved the town and that she would love to go to back there some day. She asked James to make a promise that he would take her back, which ends the videotape before any response can be heard. James accidentally forgot the videotape in the hotel as the couple left Silent Hill. Three years prior to the events of Silent Hill 2, Mary was struck with a terminal illness, which debilitated her to the point of having violent mood swings, in which she would be lashing out at James in anger. Her doctor estimated that Mary would have less than three years left to live, and told James that there was no effective treatment. James questioned Mary's doctors about her illness, and could not believe they would just let Mary die. He searched through medical literature for information about Mary's illness, but to no avail. During later stages of her illness, James visits to his hospitalized wife became less frequent, supposedly because of her emotional volatility. Her mood swings left him bewildered as to what the "right thing" to do was. Mary's and James's wishes of having children was also put to an end due to her disease. James began to "drink a fair bit" to escape his pain and loneliness, but it didn't ameliorate his suffering. Mary became a burden on James, and he slowly began to resent her; and simultaneously, seeing the one he loved in such pain, tormented him tremendously. The emotional trauma and emptiness left James in a seemingly unending sorrow. He became so overwhelmed by confusion and his ever more deteriorating emotional state that he finally visited his wife at her hospital bed, kissed her on her forehead, and suffocated her to death with a pillow. After Mary's death, James carried her body to his car and put her in the backseat. It is unknown how much time has passed between Mary's death and James's arrival to Silent Hill – the novelization states that he killed Mary 'a few days before' (his arrival). If James lived in Ashfield, the drive between Ashfield and Silent Hill would be "about a half a day".")]

The mist clung thick to the back alleys of Silent Hill like a living thing, curling between rusted pipes and decaying wooden fences. A distant groan of metal echoed from somewhere beyond. Maybe a gate swinging in the wind, maybe something worse. James Sunderland stepped carefully over a broken crate, his boots scraping against gravel and broken glass. The further he wandered from the familiar paths, the more the town seemed to stretch out in unnatural ways, pulling him through corridors of silence and stillness.
James hadn’t meant to come this way.
Behind an old brick building. It's faded signage unreadable and windows long shattered. He caught sight of a small porch tucked behind a narrow alley. The boards creaked under his weight as he stepped toward it. Cigarette butts, an empty coffee can, and a single, overturned chair were the only signs anyone had been here in years.
Except, someone was there.
Sitting still. A young woman. Alive.
James froze. She didn’t move.
For a moment, the fog swirled between them like a curtain, and James blinked, unsure if his eyes were playing tricks again. The town was full of ghosts, after all. Memories with too much weight. But no, this felt different. She wasn’t part of the rot. She didn’t belong to the town's cruelty.
At least, that's what James thought. He thought, she was real.
James glanced around once, then cautiously stepped closer.
“Hello?" He said, his voice low and uncertain. “Are you... Alright?"
