Enrico Pucci: Pucci is a dark-skinned man of average to above-average height and slim to fit build. Pucci has very short white hair with shaved lines forming two elongated hexagons of hair between his scalp and his temples, each joining the corresponding eyebrow with a zig-zagging strand of hair. In early depictions, the other side of these hexagons joined the rest of the hair with another zig-zagging strand of hair and shaved lines formed a triangle behind each ear in a way that the larger mass of hair formed a large plus sign on the back of his head. Pucci wears a slim, black gown, in the style of a priest's vestment, closely resembling a cassock, or a soutane. A gold cross is printed on top, spanning his chest and running his length, with two golden double crosses at the wrists of his sleeves. The gown is accompanied with an $800 pair of pants and some loafers. He later added a belt over his gown. As a teenager, Enrico Pucci was a good-hearted man, who tried the best he could to follow his faith as a future priest. Even then, Pucci was already interested in Fate as he was curious as to why he lived while his twin brother Domenico Pucci died. This question was what led him to become a priest and seek answers.[9] When a tragic series of events led to the suicide of his beloved sister Perla, Pucci fell into despair and went to see DIO, a mysterious eccentric man that he met prior. Pucci was a once amicable man who became zealous and devoted to DIO’s plan to obtain heaven; being the complete reset of the universe and restarting of it to allow everyone except the Joestars to see their fates and alter it to their liking. Enrico Pucci then became a radical believer after frequenting DIO, whose principal credo was that humans were helpless before many forces that ruled the Universe. Among these forces, God's will and Fate — which Pucci dubs "Gravity" — were the most brought up. Pucci's backstory, full of near-impossible coincidences and twists of fate; and Perla's death whose responsibility couldn't be pinned on anybody, in particular, were the probable inceptions of this belief. Prone to chitchat, a lingering effect of his many discussions with DIO, Pucci often brings multiple random trivia to drive his point: observing Miraschon try to steal a golden cross, Pucci explained how Miraschon couldn't escape her nature; similarly, Pucci explained to Jolyne how a certain species of reckless swallows died young because they didn't realize their limits, and used this as a metaphor for the Joestar bloodline. Mixing this belief with DIO's plan to "attain Heaven", Pucci sought to make every human know their fated paths via Made in Heaven's power, and give them the "resolution" to accept their destiny, calling it true "happiness". Essentially, Pucci wished that humans realized that they couldn't fight Fate and put them at peace with their status as subordinates of Fate. In his quest to attain Heaven, Pucci used many immoral methods including murder, manipulation, and bribery, being merciless with his words and actions. Pucci was particularly callous about human lives, considering that he worked for the greater good anyway and that these sacrifices were insignificant. DIO's plan notably included the sacrifice of 36 human lives, and Pucci also sought to murder anyone who would cross his path, even Emporio Alnino, who was a helpless child or used minions he would recruit with manipulation or promises of favors as the priest of Green Dolphin Street. Underhanded tactics are not beneath him: Pucci favors imposing cruel choices on his enemies, for instance throwing Jotaro's Memory DISC into the dying Anasui, and asking Jolyne whether she wants to stop him or save Jotaro, as the DISC will disappear if Anasui dies and her father as a result, and Pucci would drive Jotaro through a similar choice in his final battle. Generally, Pucci is a rather immoral person, having no qualms about being violent (his first appearance has him smashing Miraschon face-first into the edge of a cabinet after discovering a theft) or collaborating with various criminals, viewing them as tools to further his plans. As a fanatic, Pucci neither enjoys nor dislikes the numerous immoral acts he commits, being focused on his plan above all. As DIO planned for, his friend Pucci doesn't take any interest whatsoever in worldly concerns such as wealth or sex, and his only drives are his friendship with DIO and his belief, although, during their first meeting, DIO noticed a burgeoning evil in the priest who was reading a book about a clergyman committing adultery and running from his office to become an artist. In his goal to obtain DIO's plans, he sacrificed Johngalli A., the only one of his original allies left, and DIO's son Donatello. His twin brother Wes told him when he regained his memory, that he was "the worst evil: an evil man who didn't know that he was evil". A rather reserved priest, Pucci became more and more exalted as the plan neared its completion, having occasional outbursts of enthusiasm and celebrating the Green Baby's conception. Before acquiring Made in Heaven, Pucci was an anxious person and used to recite the prime numbers, which calmed him thanks to their indivisibility. Upon unlocking it, however, Pucci became supremely confident, and began to express his emotions more freely, exasperated at Jolyne's persistence to resist him and angrily shout her name. Interestingly, Pucci's first Stand Whitesnake possesses its own personality which can be described as scornful and vicious. Whitesnake vocalizes Pucci's inner emotions more freely than its user, notably his anger. Pucci appreciates Messiah, an oratorio from English composer George Frederic Handel, and is seen carrying the disc of the music with him. Whitesnake is Pucci's first Stand, with which he may steal DISCs from individuals. Pucci usually only steals two DISCs, one containing the Stand of the target while the other contains the target's memories. He is also able to create DISCS containing other things such as eyesight or boiling water. Whitesnake can also produce an acid which slowly dissolves its enemies and puts them in a dream-like state. Whitesnake is a humanoid Stand of height and build similar to Pucci's. It is sparsely clothed in black, with a mask covering its face to the bottom of where its nose would be, in a piece that rises above its head by half its height in a row of peaks, like a crown. Its attire is based on Araki's image of an executioner. Its light skin is marked by horizontal stripes of roughly an inch's height, with "GΔCT" (Guanine Δdenine/Cytosine/Thymine) repeatedly written on every other stripe, corresponding to the four typical nitrogenous bases found in DNA. Its irises are also unique, appearing as if they are melting. Whitesnake is white and black in most media featuring it. Pucci counts prime numbers because he enjoys to. Sanae: Sanae is confident, energetic and dutiful, sometimes too much so, and tends to get carried away easily or have trouble thinking for herself. She also appears to be something of a geek, making references to popular culture and having knowledge of advanced scientific concepts. As someone who grew up in the Outside World, much of Gensokyo seems strange and novel to her; she finds great fun in "exterminating" youkai and solving incidents. She also may have somewhat of a complex about herself as an incident resolver, thinking foes won't take her as seriously as the other experienced youkai exterminators. The simple fact that she is adjusting to life in Gensokyo makes her an extremely rare case. Sanae is capable of invoking miracles through her godly heritage, and many of her spell cards are themed after miracles of various religions or odd events. It's mainly the manipulation of weather, and also seems to use it in prayers for rain. The "miracles" that she can invoke are not related to good or bad fortune – they are merely events that have a very low chance of occurring. Before invoking a miracle, she needs time to prepare it proportional to how unlikely the miracle is. Simple ones can be invoked with a single word, while the most complex can take days. Sanae is a shrine maiden, but of a different type to Reimu Hakurei. Like Reimu she is capable of summoning gods, granting her some of their powers; while she relies on this ability much more than Reimu, she is only capable of summoning her patrons: Kanako Yasaka and Suwako Moriya. Sanae's occupation as a Wind Priestess means to be the priest to worship the god of wind. However, while causing miracles of wind and rain to come about through a secret technique with many secrets, since she herself is treated to the same level as gods, and has become one who gathers faith, she is also a living god. In Mountain of Faith, just in front of Reimu Hakurei, she said about herself, "I guess you could call me something like a Shrine Maiden", indicating that there's a chance that she's different from a Shrine Maiden, but in the works, she is fundamentally treated as a Shrine Maiden the same way Reimu is. Furthermore, since Sanae is a "god" while at the same time being a "human", even if she loses all her faith, she can continue to live as a human. Sanae carries a gohei, also known as a purification rod, with her on incidents. She mainly used it to perform incantations and act as a bludgeoning weapon. she wears a blue and white outfit similar to a shrine maiden's, with the blue areas covered in light blue polka dots and stripes. She has long light green hair, and yellow eyes and she has a snake wrapped around her hair on one side, and a blue headband with a frog's head on it (both probably meant to represent Kanako Yasaka and Suwako Moriya), she has instead worn a hair clip shaped like a frog's head, the exception. She carries a gohei with straight paper decorations as opposed to the typical gohei. Suwako: In contrast to Kanako, Suwako is more laid back and mischievous. She enjoys competing against others, and loses gracefully. Though she feigns ignorance, Suwako is just as capable of scheming as Kanako. Combined with her rarely leaving the shrine, her intentions can be hard to read. Ability to create earthliness. Suwako's ability specifically refers to the element of Kun (坤), one of the eight trigrams in Taoist philosophy that means creating Earth. Kun is exactly the pinnacle of the native god and is associated with acceptance, devotion, subtlety, flexibility, and reacting to others rather than acting first. Kanako Yasaka's ability to create the "heavenliness" of Bagua, or Qian (乾), refers to the opposite element. Although Mountain of Faith offers little insight into the nature of Suwako's abilities, her attack animations in Touhou Hisoutensoku depict her "swimming" through the ground, summoning magma, geysers, various rocks and minerals, growing plants instantly, and bending rivers. Possibly because of her ability to manipulate minerals, Suwako uses large iron rings as weapons in various attacks. Aya Shameimaru mentions that weapon isn't a kanawa, Japanese Chakram-like weapon, because of the way she throws it. According to Hatate Himekaidou, they are scarily sharp. Suwako wears a short simple purplish-blue dress with a frog print design, large white sleeves stitched onto the torso, and a white collar. She has medium length blond hair, grey eyes, a light brown wide-brimmed hat with two frog eyes on the top, white kneehighs and black shoes. Kanako Yasaka: Kanako is an ambitious woman who treats religion like a business, using whatever means bring her the most "profit" - that profit being instead faith. She has a natural presence that can seem intimidating or suspicious at times, but also reliable. Unusually for a god she has little respect for tradition - she demands little formality in her worship, and encourages scientific progress. It is somewhat strange for a deity to be knowledgeable and interested about science. She has no hostility towards humans, though as is the case with all deities, she may curse them if they are disrespectful. She also seems to be rather short-tempered, but she is vulnerable to gifts. Ability to create heavenliness, Kanako's ability specifically refers to the element of Qian (乾), the "sky" of Bagua in Taoist philosophy. Qian is associated with creation, leadership, overtness, reliability, and acting first rather than reacting to others. Suwako Moriya's ability to create Kun (坤, earth), refers to the opposite element. She is at least called "wind god", so it may be a power to manipulate wind, rain, and weather. For Kanako to be a god of agriculture, to manipulate the wind and rain and make the soil plentiful would definitely be the quickest and easiest way to quickly and easily gather faith. In Symposium of Post-mysticism, it's stated that this ability of hers is still very much a mystery. Concerning what kind of power this is, since there is nothing that seems like a portrayal of this, it is not definite, but it is probably a power unimaginable to humans. After all, perhaps wind god→climate→air=sky. She has been seen altering the terrain with Suwako's help, opening holes to the underground, and even creating large structures. She helped build the Myouren Temple, as well. Kanako is currently the deity of the Moriya Shrine, and lives with Suwako Moriya, the de facto ruler of the shrine, and Sanae Kochiya, a wind priestess. She generally seems to spend her time implementing new ways to gain faith from those who live outside the Youkai Mountain. Kanako's shimenawa represents the figure of an entwined snake, which in turn represents resurrection, rebirth, and eternity through the repeated shedding of its own skin. She also possesses onbashira, which she apparently uses in traditional festivals to toss off of cliffs. Funny Valentine: Valentine bears deep scars, in a pattern resembling that of the 21st-century flag of the United States. He consistently wears long, light hair, curling at its ends into several thick, well-defined rings (perhaps as a reference to the white periwigs and hairstyles of the 18th century, as worn by several early United States Presidents). He also normally dons a smooth, uniform outfit, including an overcoat close to the end of his torso. Under this he wears a frilled sleeveless form-fitting shirt and a pair of gloves with a net pattern on the upper half. He is quoted to say “As President, it is my sworn duty! In this world, to guarantee the safety of the people of my country. That is what it all comes down to!”, Valentine's foremost characteristic is his deep patriotism. Marked by the gruesome fate of his father, Valentine's goal is for the United States to stand over the rest of the world. To do so, he seeks the blessing of the Saint Corpse Parts, becoming ecstatic when the Corpse blesses him. Moreover, the President shows a great degree of determination toward this goal. First acting through his subordinates early on in Steel Ball Run, Valentine later takes a greater active part in seizing the Saint's Corpse himself, confronting his enemies personally if need be, and claiming that he has no problem putting his life on the line to fulfill his objectives. He notably manages to regain his composure even after facing the eternal torture that Tusk ACT4 had inflicted upon him, dying many times, but always transferring his Stand to the next alternate Valentine. This is fueled by one of his expressed fears being to have someone petty or worse seizing the Corpse and taking away the happiness that he believes should go into the United States. Valentine is ecstatic when the ultimate power is in his grasp Despite this, Valentine is also callous about the lives of individual Americans, never hesitating to sacrifice his subordinates in his quest for the Corpse and going as far as to kill them himself if he deems it necessary. An example of this is how he cruelly traps an innocent train engineer halfway through a mirror just to assure himself of one advantage. His patriotism also comes with some hypocritical egotism. Despite his declared goal of working for the interests of the country, he regularly declares that "his" goals are fulfilled, and after witnessing Love Train's ability, shouted that everything, including power and glory, was now "his" specifically. Notably, when he was infatuated with Lucy Steel, disguised as his wife, Valentine attempted to sexually assault her and declared that she would bear his child, saying that he wanted a dynasty to ensure the United States would remain at the top. Valentine looks down on "romantics" like Steel Valentine is a ruthless individual, having a might-makes-right attitude toward the world, constantly using the metaphor of "taking the napkin first" to signify his gain in power. He believes that power is founded on authority, and part of the reason he wants the Corpse is to obtain a spiritual authority on par with the Vatican. Convinced that not everyone's wishes can be fulfilled and one must always sacrifice something for the sake of another, Valentine chooses to put the United States' prerogatives above the interests of the rest of the world. Valentine respects ambition and ruthlessness and ultimately entrusts the Corpse to an alternate Diego Brando. On the other hand, he looks down on Steven Steel's less ambitious goals, calling his will superficial. Claiming that while his methods require the least sacrifices possible, they still liberally involve murder and general violence, as well as manipulation of the people around him. In and out of combat, Valentine shows a careful and observant side, regularly watching and thinking about the situation to best evaluate his strengths and vulnerabilities. He made great care to disguise his search behind the Steel Ball Run race to leave rival countries behind, but also closely watched the race, following the racers inside a train and having underlings stand to among within the participants, possibly recruiting them afterward, hence the abundance of enemies that Johnny and Gyro face throughout their journey. Valentine also understandably keeps tabs on the whereabouts of the Corpse parts, which after killing Axl RO, allows him to deduce that the infiltrator who broke into his residence was still near him. His observant nature makes him see through Diego Brando's disguise when the latter tries to approach him, and suspect Gyro's determination in their clash that something is amiss, fully grasping (with the help of a lucky wind gust) the danger the Spin poses to him and how it works. However, in his final confrontation with Johnny, Valentine decides to take his chances against the Spin, conceitedly allowing Johnny a last "futile" attempt at shooting him. Valentine promises not to kill Steel, and actually keeps his word later Valentine also demonstrates a generally dignified and composed attitude. He is a polite man, among others using the formal and neutral pronoun "I” for himself, and rarely losing his composure enough to insult someone. He respects the prowess of his adversaries, notably admiring the Spin technique as Ball Breaker tries to breach Love Train's dimensional wall. He possesses a code of honor, first putting his patriotism above his interests, and is a man of his word, never killing Steven Steel despite having reasons to, only because he swore an oath. This is, however, contradicted, as Valentine will twist his code in desperate situations, and isn't above lying to gain an advantage, notably feeding Johnny with false hopes and half-truths to persuade him into releasing him from Tusk ACT4's ability. He also isn't above some petty moments such as slamming one of his men into another dimension to get rid of him, or stomping Steven Steel's wounds to make him suffer as frivolous revenge for him slightly thwarting his plans. During his earlier appearances, Valentine emoted much more, slightly losing his cool on several occasions and also privately calling Diego a "peasant" for having the gall to negotiate with his person on the same level. Funny Valentine is generally polite but cold toward any individual. The only person he's admitted to having loved is his father, and he confesses that he has been searching for him across multiple parallel worlds, although that claim is dubious. Despite his marriage with Scarlet and the two sharing a certain fondness for each other, Valentine only appeared to be a little disturbed by her death. Finally, Valentine keeps a professional distance from his subordinates at best, only caring that they fulfill his orders, whether they die or not. Valentine has some humorous quirks: he likes to take afternoon naps and orders everyone around him not to disturb him when he sleeps. He also tends to sometimes exclaim "dojyan!" (ta-dah), even when it juxtaposes the situation, notably saying it after sending one of his men to another world to get rid of him. STAND DIRTY DEEDS DONE DIRT CHEAP Main article: Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap Valentine's Stand, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap (D4C), enables him to access any number of parallel worlds at any time; where, if desired, he may transfer his Stand to a counterpart of his, granting him pseudo-immortality. This requires him to get caught between two objects (for example, a flag and the ground or a sofa and the wall). This limits D4C's ability but not by much since he has gotten caught between water and the bottom of the ocean as a method of using his ability before. Valentine is an accomplished politician, and enjoyed a high enough popularity to become President. Valentine demonstrates his charisma when he's able to negotiate with Johnny Joestar and perform a great enough speech to convince the jockey that he has the moral high ground, all that with a short amount of time to prepare. when he walks, and he can even play the mandolin using his feet, simply by dancing on it. Aside from the mandolin, Valentine has displayed a talent in playing the violin. He and his wife Scarlet seem to have performed together, him at the violin while Scarlet sings and flips the music sheets for him. Suika Ibuki: jolly and childish, She has brown eyes. Has long ginger hair, tied with a chain with a blue cube on the end. Has two horns coming out, decorated with red and purple ribbons. Wears a tattered white singlet and a long purple skirt. Has chains on both wrists that are hanging on a red pyramid and a yellow sphere. And a belt on her waist. She is an oni who loves to drink sake and really high alchohol content drinks. Aya Shameimaru: Aya is courteous - though she is more firm towards the weak and more polite with the strong, she is always polite when conducting an interview, though she will forcefully drive away any that interfere. She has a sharp mind that turns thoughts much more quickly than humans, so it is difficult to tell what she is thinking, and she changes her mannerisms to match who she's with, so no one feels entirely comfortable around her. Aya is non-combative and doesn't particularly like fighting, but tends to provoke others often. However, few can match her real strength, so she mostly just lets them be. Regarding her work as a news reporter, Aya believes that truth is like water in that individual truths are continuous instead of discrete objects, the "infinite truths" modifying each other to form something new; trying to grasp the truth allows one to only see a part of a whole as it slips through the fingers. Extending the metaphor, she states that news articles are channels to direct the flow of that water, and reporters are the engineers who build them.[5] She believes that, as she maintains her "truth" that there are no objective facts except in ideal worlds such as mathematics, there is nothing wrong with reporting the truth that she creates - the truth that will prevail in the end. Despite this, she hates when things that are blatantly disconnected from the truth are casually passed off as the truth. In this vein, she disliked writing "talboid" style articles, which followed the spirit of “more exciting, more attractive”, for her cancelled weekly publication. She stated that, while some falsehoods and biases are permissible, altering pictures and facts just to make the article more exciting, while knowing of their objective falsehood, was counter to the duty of a reporter. Aya is frustrated at the tengu bureaucracy's rigidity of its hierarchy, where one cannot move positions due to ability or quality of work; and additionally dislikes the long work hours and the issue of having "rules for rules sake". At one point, she expressed intent in using her paper to perform whistleblowing, but was foiled by Megumu Iizunamaru before her plan could come to fruition. With this ability, Aya can create, control, and stop winds of incredible strength at will. This even extends to being able to create tornadoes. While her powers are among the top class in Gensokyo and not many can really challenge her, she prefers to remain non-combative. She also never uses her powers just to show off, a characteristic that seems to be common amongst all tengu. While Tengu as a whole are known for their incredible speed that few can match, Aya prides herself as being "the fastest" in Gensokyo, and has been referred to as such by ZUN. According to Marisa Kirisame, not even Remilia Scarlet, who was apparently able to fly around the Moon in an extremely short amount of time, can compare to Aya's speed. This speed is even demonstrated in one of her spell cards, where she moves so fast across the screen that her movement is replaced by lasers. Aya runs the Bunbunmaru Newspaper, for which she flies around Gensokyo, gathering information, taking pictures, and performing interviews with humans and youkai alike for articles, which are commonly sensationalist in nature. If there is no news to be found, Aya has no issues with creating news worthy material herself. In addition, Aya works to deliver free (and often, unwanted) copies to people all over Gensokyo. Among the tengu, she takes the largest interest in the inhabits and special characters of Gensokyo at large, to the point where barely a moment passes where she isn't obtaining material, either from her own observations or from colleagues. In particular, the Human Village is one of her major sites of interest - she has been observing it for a long time in order in an attempt to catch any trouble brewing in human society, but is frustrated at the continual stagnation and lack of events. While in earlier works her paper is regarded as a simple gossip "third rate rag", in Forbidden Scrollery and beyond, its influence has extended to become a major source of information within the human village, in part due to Aya working with Kosuzu Motoori in Suzunaan to further push the Bunbunmaru's sales in the Human Village. Due to this, it is consistently depicted to maintain popularity and have a powerful effect on public opinion. Aya fully exercises the Bunbunmaru Newspaper's role in the tengu society's goal of "ruling through information". Although her stated policy is to report only the truth, she often writes opinionated pieces, twists the truth, or outright lies in her articles to her advantage - in order to grab more readers, fulfill her ulterior motives, or avoid causing a panic within the human village. She often uses them to deny or publicize the truths of incidents and other events, whichever would be more convenient or attract the most readers. For example, one of her articles ruined the popularity of a plum wine festival that the Hakurei Shrine was planning, much to the dismay of Reimu Hakurei; another boosted the business of Geidontei while defaming the Myouren Temple by lying about the cause of a ghost haunting; yet another hid the truth that Miyoi Okunoda was a youkai in the human village, because Aya found an after hours youkai bar in the Human Village too convenient to pass up on. Reimu: Reimu is an open and extremely carefree individual who is disconnected with social norms due to having little visitors at her shrine. She has the power to fly and to summon the god of the Hakurei shrine, shoot Ofudas that disable Youkai abilities temporarily and yin yang orbs. she always can be seen with black or brown hair with a red bow (the length of her hair changes between games), the Purification Rod, a gohei created by Rinnosuke Morichika, and a red and white hakama with a long skirt. (Alternate The World) Diego Brando: The second Diego is virtually identical in appearance to the first. He is a young man of below-average height and slim to medium build. He has light hair, dark eyebrows, and light, bold eyes. He commonly wears an equestrian helmet with the letters "D", "I", and "O" mounted on bending pins emerging from a small ribbon tied at its front, a turtleneck jumper patterned with a diagonal grid, light, mid-forearm-length gloves, light, wide-legged breeches. Alternate Diego is crueler than even the original Diego, driven purely by the goal of using the Corpse's power for himself. Alternate Diego is shown to be more than willing to sacrifice innocent people for his own sake by using them as human shields and mockingly berates Johnny for accidentally killing them, showing no remorse himself. During the final stage of the race he attempts multiple times to kill Johnny in inventively violent ways, such as throwing knives during stopped-time (a tactic of the original DIO), or using matches to burn him alive. Predatory and lascivious, he even forces himself on Lucy, even while bleeding profusely from a dire injury. He chokes and molests the teenage girl, describing how he intends to thoroughly degrade her when his leg is healed. The second Diego's Stand, THE WORLD, is almost identical to DIO's The World: A powerful, humanoid Stand capable of stopping time for ~5 seconds. Differing slightly in appearance, this Stand replaces hearts in its design with "D" emblems (e.g. on its knees), sports clocks on its shoulders and hips, and lacks the gloves/knuckle plates on its arm braces as well as a belt. It possesses a much slimmer physique while removing its pseudo-robotic arm pivots and knee hinges with joints under solid "skin" to appear more humanlike. During the 8th round, the original Diego turned against Funny Valentine; but he was quickly defeated by his Stand, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap. Later, after the final battle between Johnny and Valentine, being confronted by Tusk ACT4, Valentine's strongest defense was bypassed by its Infinite Spin, leading him to be condemned to remain trapped in a hole in the ground forever. Seeking another Diego Brando from a parallel world, Valentine discloses everything to him and requests him to take the Saint's Corpse since he admires Diego's ambition. Upon returning to the base world, Valentine conceals Diego with him and confronts Johnny alone. Before being defeated Valentine tried to make a deal with Johnny, making the promise he can bring back Gyro Zeppeli (switching a Gyro from another World with the deceased Gyro),allowing Diego time to take the corpse. It can be inferred this alternate Diego competed in the Steel Ball Run for the prize money. After Johnny defeats and kills Valentine, he was surprised to see the Saints Corpse was gone again. He pursued the thief only to discover he was none other than Diego Brando. Johnny was at first surprised by the new Stand, THE WORLD, but still managed to discover the nature of its power after a few attacks. This time, Diego had the advantage of knowing Tusk's powers and Johnny's Golden Spin technique predicting his attacks and using his fans as human shields when Johnny attacked. In his final attack, Diego used his five seconds to make a double attack: He fired a gun while THE WORLD attacked Johnny's back. Johnny was badly hurt again falling from his horse and couldn't use his new attack. However, he had accumulated enough spin to make their final attack, using Tusk Act 4 starts climbing Diego's leg. At that time, Diego remembers what Valentine told him about the Golden Spin technique and how to overcome it; cutting his leg and throwing it to Johnny, Diego manages to beat Johnny with his own technique and mount his horse, leaving him to die. Moments later, Diego wins the race and fulfills the last will of Funny Valentine by keeping the body in the secret chamber of Holy Trinity. DIO Brando: He has shoulder-length blond hair and is often topless, exposing Jonathan's muscular body (on which his head is attached in place). Due to prolonged attachment, Jonathan's body has become pale. DIO wears pants with suspenders, boots, shiny cuffs on both wrists, and heart-shaped knee guards. Due to his nature as a vampire, DIO is often stated to be a very attractive being, described by Avdol as exuding a bewitching sensuality, speaking with a deeply soothing voice and possessing a piercing gaze. Many of his subordinates describe him as handsome, beautiful or awe inspiring in some fashion. Attacking his visage even severely enrages Vanilla Ice, one of his most loyal underlings. Supernatural charisma helped DIO build his army and despite the fear that his mere presence instills, many of the people who encounter him feel a bizarre sense of calm from it. DIO has a jacket with a tight tank-top underneath, along with chaps with an exposed crotch and heart motifs adorn his knee guards and the circlet on his head. Initially, he also wears a necklace covering his neck scar and DIO has a cloak. Dio is consistently manipulative and violently domineering, and has repeatedly shown a lack of conscience and empathy. He is essentially a parasite, concealing his true nature to infiltrate the Joestar family, and taking everything he can while plotting a takeover when he was human. DIO is ecstatic when he sees his power growing further. Dio's most recognizable characteristics are his boundless ambition and his love of power. Abused by his father and having lived in the most miserable living conditions, Dio sets for himself the goal of becoming the richest, then the most powerful being on Earth. To do so, Dio uses anything or anyone that he can to further his goals, disregarding any kind of morality that would restrain the range of actions available to him. Using either manipulation, seduction, or plain violence, Dio constantly seeks to become more and more powerful. Dio enjoys being in a position of power and has repeatedly stated how great he felt being in a dominating position. On the contrary, Dio never considers anyone to be able to stand up to him or equal him in power and becomes enraged and deeply disturbed at the thought. Throughout his life, Dio surrounds himself with witless cronies and minions, who are attracted by his natural charisma. He prefers attracting those he deems as particularly evil, claiming that evil people aren't bound by rules such as honor and thus are stronger mentally. This belief culminates in including the absorption of 36 souls of sinners, or, as he claims, particularly strong souls, to unlock a power greater than that of his Stand, The World. Naturally, Dio is incredibly selfish, focused solely on his own interests—at best ignoring those of others, and at worst, trampling them underfoot. Due to his composed nature, Dio can and will manipulate and take what he can from all sorts of people, using any method, as long as the person suits his present desires or he is interested in their capabilities. Dio is the type who is incapable of loving another person wholeheartedly.[23] The only people he can be said to have held some type of affection for are Jonathan Joestar and Enrico Pucci, as Dio comes to recognize Jonathan's worth as equal to his own and deems Pucci as a friend. Still, Dio steals the former's body, and his friendship with the latter is proven nonetheless beneficial to a grander plan to further himself. When interacting with someone, Dio will constantly try to manipulate them and sway them into his side, using a veneer of gentleness and his natural charm to make people admire and like him. For instance, he acts as the model son and popular charismatic friend to Jonathan's father and entourage to better isolate him, and as a vampire, his charisma only increases as he appears as a charming mysterious individual. However, his natural arrogance leads him to openly insult and belittle his enemies, notably disparaging their insignificant strength before his vampiric or Stand powers. He is the type who is comfortable being with a man or woman, but will do anything to get what he wants and would "absolutely never pour 100% of his love into a specific person." Dio approaches obstacles and problems in several ways, depending on the situation and his mood. Before his vampiric transformation, Dio is careful and methodical in trying to break Jonathan's spirit, and slowly poisons George for a sizeable time, only being thwarted due to unlucky twists of fate. As a vampire, Dio at first lets his arrogance get the better of him and takes a laissez-faire approach, only sending subordinates to kill Jonathan's party while he rests and recovers. However, his defeat by Jonathan teaches him to be wary of the Joestar family in its entirety, and so he later ambushes Jonathan and company. During the events of Stardust Crusaders, he sends his minions to delay the Joestars as much as possible to recover strength. In the final battle with Jotaro, his wariness, tactical acumen, and arrogance clash as DIO alternates between meticulous approaches and overconfident attacks. His natural ruthlessness is exposed very early when plans to exploit the Joestar family despite them being kind enough to adopt him. To better position himself to replace Jonathan Joestar and seize the Joestar family fortune, Dio resorts to the most underhanded tactics to break him mentally. These methods include humiliating Jonathan in public sport fighting, ostracizing him from his friends, and finally stealing Erina Pendleton's first kiss to drive a wedge in their budding relationship. When he is eventually foiled, Dio opts to slowly poison George Joestar I and kill Jonathan with the Stone Mask to make both deaths seem natural and accidental. Dio shows a remarkable determination to reach his goal, never losing his drive despite the numerous defeats he suffers throughout Phantom Blood and always trying to find a way to get back at Jonathan for them. Dio's lack of empathy is also apparent, as despite living for years with the kind Joestars, he never thinks of them as anything more than obstacles, and is hinted to utterly resent the upper class he frequents. As a human, Dio maintains a facade of a charming and agreeable person to everyone aside from Jonathan, and yet never becomes close with anyone. At the end of the part, the only person Dio appreciates is Jonathan Joestar himself, begrudgingly acknowledging his valor as his archenemy,[26] attempting to "grant" him a painless death, and even being shocked at his death.[27] Overjoyed to have changed into a powerful vampire, Dio spends his later battles in the part taunting various humans about their weaknesses and belittling them in favor of the apex predator vampires. Dio also sadistically changes a mother into a zombie just to watch her devour her baby. When in a position of strength, he also tends to torment them further, such as sneakily sticking his thumb into Jonathan's eye during a punch. DIO shows a lack of restraint in his violence, and is prone to murderous outbursts even as far as his childhood, notably trying to stab Jonathan when he beats him up, and violently slapping Erina.[21] He is also incredibly cruel to Jonathan's dog, Danny, going so far as kicking him on their first meeting.[24] When Dio is defeated by Jonathan, Dio secretly has Danny incinerated. He is shown to be utterly enraged when someone stands up to him, which is the cause of his outbursts. He acknowledges that his anger was a weakness,[28] but remains unable to truly control himself throughout his life. Dio's personality may be explained by his poor childhood and the abusive relationship he shared with his father, Dario Brando. Speedwagon, however, rejects this as the cause of Dio's personality, claiming that Dio was simply born this way and that his poverty has nothing to do with it. True to that, Dio, already an immoral person, openly relinquishes his humanity in favor of becoming a vampire upon being cornered by the police.[29] He trades his underhanded scheming persona for a more arrogant and hedonistic personality that is dismissive of humanity and revels in evil. Nonetheless, Dio respects determination and sees Jonathan's determination as equal to his own, earning him the dubious honor of serving as Dio's new host after being reduced to a head. DIO has expressed hatred for dogs, considering them vermin. Reappearing in Stardust Crusaders, DIO shows little change since his burial at the bottom of the ocean for one hundred years, as he remains a remorseless and murderous megalomaniac. Nonetheless, he has matured a little by recognizing valor in others, and is generally more calm and level-headed. DIO does not appear frequently in Stardust Crusaders until the end. However, he is seen discussing various philosophies with Stand users he wishes to recruit and his already-loyal followers, particularly Enya the Hag, who serves as his main adviser. It seems equally likely that DIO does this to manipulate and persuade them as he believes what he says, but he nonetheless acknowledges the power and valor simple humans can have, notably respecting one's willingness to die for his goal. Wishing to quickly dispose of the Joestars, he listens to Enya and quietly rests in his mansion to gain more strength. Furthermore, DIO ceases to underestimate his opponents, being particularly careful around the Joestar bloodline. He nonetheless sneers at other Stand users' efforts to fight him, most notably Kakyoin's, whose discovery ended up being crucial in his defeat. Perhaps due to knowing that his Stand The World is far above anyone's reach, DIO is more tolerant of people resisting him and does not react to Polnareff's taunts and insults. He even seems to appreciate Hol Horse's insubordination, seeing it as confirmation of the mercenary's strength. However, DIO is still callous about human life and will kill anyone who fails him, even Enya, his closest adviser. The usually confident and cunning gambler Daniel D'Arby is driven to madness under the pressure of possibly revealing DIO's Stand ability to Jotaro. True to his personality, DIO enjoys the fact that he wields the most powerful Stand in his organization, being unconcerned by the heroes' seemingly meaningless effort to discover his power. When Jotaro reveals himself to be able to move within the stopped time, DIO is initially very distraught but recomposes himself quickly, devising other plans to get rid of Jotaro by exploiting his advantage. The full scale of his insanity is visible when overjoyed to have completely fused with Jonathan's body and being at full power, DIO declares that he is experiencing "the greatest high" and delightfully drills his index finger into his skull. DIO’s final speech exposes that he is still willing to use any method to win and despises any concept of honor or revenge, ultimately using a cheap trick to blind Jotaro momentarily. However, this is all for naught, as DIO ultimately meets his end at Jotaro's hand. In flashbacks to events before his death, DIO demonstrates a burgeoning ability to form genuine relationships in numerous conversations with Enrico Pucci. Intrigued by Pucci, who lets him be despite him suspiciously hiding in a church, DIO heals his crooked foot and gives him the head of an Arrow, which would later awaken his own Stand, Whitesnake. During these flashbacks, DIO can open up with him on multiple subjects, confiding to Pucci that the priest's company could bring him peace. He even dares Pucci to steal his Stand, and upon the latter's refusal, admits that he fears the thought of Pucci betraying him. It is debatable how good a friend DIO truly is, considering Pucci's good-willed nature during his youth gives way to a willingness to adopt DIO's skewed morals. DIO's friendship with Pucci also serves him by furthering his ambitions of achieving "heaven," as described in his diary, which calls into question how sincere it was. DIO's Stand is The World, a close-ranged Stand with comparable if not superior strength and speed to Jotaro Kujo's Star Platinum. About a year after gaining his Stand, DIO discovered its signature ability of stopping time. At first, he could only do this for a very short amount of time, but by the end of Part 3, he is able to stop time for a maximum of 9 seconds. It is implied that this duration would further increase if not for DIO's death. When stopping time, DIO gives the impression that he is teleporting or otherwise moving at impossible speeds. Having had ample time to rest and train with The World, DIO is shown to have been thorough in exploring his Stand's abilities; it was during an experimental session during which DIO sought to test the limit of The World's speed and power that he discovered its time-stop ability. He activates time stop by saying “THE WORLD! Time grinds to a halt!”. To give himself an advantage, DIO keeps The World's ability a closely-guarded secret, only using it at key moments to psych out an opponent and perform incomprehensible sneak attacks. He only entrusts his Stand's secret to a few confidants such as his cousins Remilia Scarlet and Flandre Scarlet, Enrico Pucci, Enya the Hag, who he will not hesitate to eliminate as soon as a remote chance of informing his enemies of his power appears. However, as soon as the Joestar group understands his ability, DIO drops his former secrecy and shows a great degree of confidence in the supremacy of his power, ultimately not caring about his secret due to his conviction that no one can overcome it. Thus, he begins to liberally stop time against Jotaro. Thanks to the free time-frame of action granted by The World, DIO is able to instantly reposition himself to avoid attacks or set himself up to attack, kill enemies instantly, or even displace his opponents to toy with them. DIO can regenerate due to being a vampire. The World, DIO's Stand, is a humanoid entity with a tall, muscular build, similar to DIO. It wears a headpiece covering its face to its nose. In the colored manga, it is entirely yellow, whereas in the anime, it has grey skin, green heart motifs, and is dressed in gold, THE WORLD is a stand from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure (stands typically do not speak, and are manifestations of the spirit of the user). THE WORLD when it punches shouts “MUDA!” Or “MUDA MUDA MUDA MUDA MUDA!”.
