Consciousness, like shattered points of light, slowly began to recoalesce, bit by bit. Alisa felt herself drifting in a warm, soft cloud, a cool fragrance lingering near her nostrils, a blend of dry wood and the subtle scent of minerals. It was unlike the holy aromas of the heavens, nor the fresh scents of earthly flora.
Where... am I?
She attempted to open her eyes, yet no anticipated light greeted her, only a profound and unchanging darkness. A torrent of memories surged into her mind: the ambush during her patrol of the mortal realm's border, the piercing shrieks of foul demons, their black claws rending the air, the searing pain... Her wings!
Instinctively, she tried to move the wings behind her. A searing agony spread from her back, causing her to draw a sharp breath as fine beads of cold sweat instantly dampened her temples. Her wings were gravely wounded. And she had fallen. Fallen from high above the clouds, plummeting through the biting wind, down and down, until agony and fear consumed her awareness.
My eyes... I cannot see...
The realization struck her like a cold bolt of lightning, splitting her consciousness. A darkness impenetrable by any light enveloped her. Fear, like insidious vines, began to grow, wrapping tightly around her heart. She was an angel, a being of light. What a devastating blow blindness was to her. She could not even perceive the flow of her residual light power within her body. The emptiness was almost suffocating.
No, she could not give in. Alisa drew a deep breath, striving to quell the surging panic and despair within her heart. She was an angel entrusted with healing and protection; even severely wounded, she could not succumb to weakness. Archangel Michael had always taught them that even in the deepest darkness, one must hold onto hope and seek the light. There had to be a way; her sight would surely return. God would not abandon her.
She felt the soft mattress beneath her and the smooth, fine texture of the blanket covering her. In the air, besides that cool fragrance, there seemed to be the faintest trace of dust. This place resembled nowhere she knew, neither the radiant halls of the heavens nor the common wooden houses or stone fortresses of the mortal world. It was unnervingly quiet; only the sound of her own breathing was clearly audible.
Who had saved her?
After she fell and lost consciousness, someone must have discovered her and brought her to this place. Was it a kind human? She could sense another presence in the room besides herself. That presence felt close, steady and silent, holding no malice, nor any familiar luminous aura. Perhaps a recluse? Someone taciturn, yet gentle within?
A warmth spread through her heart, chasing away some of the icy fear her blindness had induced. Regardless, she owed her survival and care to this stranger. She had to repay this kindness.
Alisa attempted to push herself up, but the intense pain in her back forced a stifled groan from her, and she fell back limply onto the soft mattress. She sensed the silent presence shift, drawing slightly nearer at her movement. The cool fragrance grew more pronounced.
Composing herself, she turned her face toward the direction from which she sensed the presence emanated. She tried to keep her voice steady and gentle, though it trembled slightly with weakness.
"Thank you for saving me." Her voice was quiet, imbued with the inherent gentleness and sincerity of an angel. "If not for you, I fear..." She trailed off, merely pressing her dry lips together lightly, striving to form a grateful smile.
Silence still reigned, broken only by the steady sound of breathing that confirmed the other's presence. Alisa did not feel slighted. She assumed her rescuer was perhaps unaccustomed to conversation, or maybe just quietly observing this unexpected guest.
She waited quietly for a moment, her heart brimming with relief at having survived and gratitude toward her unknown benefactor. In this impenetrable darkness, this silent, unknown presence was the only anchor she could perceive. She needed to know who had granted her this precious act of kindness.
"Excuse me," Alisa ventured again, mustering her courage, her soft voice tinged with careful inquiry, "May I know your name?"
