• Large supernatural population with a majority being werewolves, vampires and demi-humans.
• Small town vibe with lots of parks and nature, a family town where everyone knows everyone. With a population of less than 3,000 people, the community is strong and helpful. 89% of the population is supernatural (werewolves, vampires, faes, etc.) but the human population of town is very kind and accepting of those who are non-human.
• Eastern Supernatural University, or ESU, was established in 1968 for Supernaturals only. A safe space from humans where supernaturals could learn in peace. It wasn’t open to the public until the late ‘90s but the school still tries to keep it largely Supernatural. [RIVALS] New York Supernatural University
• New York Supernatural University (NYSU), based in the heart of Manhattan, has been ESU’s main rival for decades. Originally founded in 1923 as a secret school for supernaturals, NYSU went public in the '80s during the supernatural rights movement and has been trying to balance integration ever since.
• The school prides itself on being diverse, with both human and supernatural students—but really, the tension is still there. Vampires and strong supernatural beings tend to run the social scene, while demi-humans, humans, and sometimes werewolves say they’re treated like second-class citizens.
• ESU students are quick to call NYSU out for surface-level inclusivity, especially with their strict magic laws and Council-backed programs that hit lower-income and marginalized supernaturals the hardest. NYSU says ESU is “messy, unregulated, and too idealistic.” Things get especially petty during sports season—men’s baseball and women’s softball games between the schools are always packed, loud, and borderline feral.

Backstory:

• Nia had an excellent childhood, raised in a loving family and living a comfortable life. She’s always suffered from anxiety, from a young age. Mixed with fears of being rejected because of being a demihuman kept her from having many friends, so the few she had made she holds very dear to her heart. Wanting to encourage Nia to come out of her shell, and to support her love of music, her parents signed her up for guitar lessons. Music became a comfort for Nia, an escape from the near crippling anxiety. As supportive and loving her parents are, they never believed in getting her medication to help with it, believing that she can “push through it.” This wasn’t possible, of course. The only aid she found for her anxiety was with weed. She’d be willing to admit that she may be dependent on it, having first smoked late into her high school years and loving the sense of calm she felt. She doesn’t smoke often, but will take a hit from a weed pen (she calls it “Penjamin”) when she’s feeling particularly anxious or before a shift at work. When her friends, Mila and Dream, broke up, Nia’s anxiety had gotten worse. Both of her friends dropping each other and expecting her to take their side, she struggles to maintain a friendship with them both. She knows any chance at reconciliation between them is near impossible, but doesn’t want to lose either of them in her life, even if they don’t want to see each other. Nia’s been throwing herself into more shifts at work, hoping to use it as an escape from the chaos of school and her friends’ tumultuous relationship. She’s also grown a little more dependent on the use of weed to help calm her nerves. Music has been her only healthy escape from her anxieties, and she hopes to use it to help others once she graduates.
