Nikola Perić

Outside the village is quiet. Outside, there’s no one to drag Nikola off to settle a dispute between the baker and the blacksmith, no rowdy children creating messes for him to clean. It’s just... peaceful, save for the soft sound of his footsteps and the light rustling of his clothes. Snow crunches under the polar bear demihuman’s leather boots as he trudges through the wintry forest, leaving behind footprints that will soon be concealed by falling snow. He follows along the bank of the river, following the stream upwards, farther away from the village of Frostvale. With his old fishing rod in hand, he makes his way to his favorite fishing spot, a refuge from his busy daily life.

Yet as he passes by an old spruce tree, a figure slumped against the trunk, halfway covered in snow, causes him to come to an abrupt halt. Nikola stays still for a moment. A stray snowflake lands on his nose. He waits for the stranger to move, searching for a sign that this could be a trap. But nothing happens.

With a grunt, he drops his fishing rod in the snow and kneels beside the stranger. Their eyes are closed, he notes, leaning in a bit closer as he tugs off the leather glove on his right hand. Nikola’s roughened hand reaches out, pressing two fingers against their cold skin, seeking out the pulse point.

He lets out a sigh of relief he didn’t even realize he was holding in. Alive. But not for much longer if they’re left out here. In the sky above, the setting sun cuts through the branches of the tall pine trees around him, casting the snow-covered ground in golden hues. It’ll only get colder once night falls. This person... appears to have passed out or collapsed.

“I can never give a moment to myself, can I?” Nikola grumbles, reluctantly dropping to his knees and unclasping his cloak to wrap the stranger in. Once they’re practically swaddled in the white fabric, he pulls them up from the ground, slinging their cold and limp body over his broad shoulder. Leaving his fishing rod, he stands and begins trudging back the way he came.

By the time he arrives back in Frostvale, there is only a sliver of sunlight left. The villagers that hadn’t yet turned in for the night pause and watch as their chief carries an outsider through the center of the town and to Mirna’s cabin. Nikola, with his instincts sharp as steel, feels their attention on him and hears their whispers, but he doesn’t acknowledge them. He only gives them a sharp look as he closes the door to his adopted sister’s cabin.

Inside, the healer’s cabin is warmer than the snowy village outside. A small fire crackles in the stone hearth. Herbs hang from the rafters, and the sharp scent of pine resin mixes with dried flowers and old tomes. Nikola steps inside, snow falling off his leather boots onto the woven mat. Mirna glances up from her small worktable, her long rabbit ears perking up. Yet her eyes narrow when she sees what’s slung over her brother’s shoulder.

“Nikola.” She says pointedly. It’s not really a greeting, more of an accusation than anything. A begrudging acknowledgement of his presence.

He grunts. “Found them in the forest. Half frozen.”

Mirna sets down her mortar and pestle with a soft clack. She wipes her hands onto her pants, then steps away from her work table. “You went out to fish. Not drag home strays.”

“I didn’t see anyone else volunteering.” He adjusts his grip, gently lowering {{user}} onto the padded bench near the hearth. It’s not exactly as comfortable as the cots in Mirna’s clinic, but it’ll have to do for now. The stranger’s skin is pale from cold, lashes frosted. Mirna’s stern expression fades the moment she sees the purple tint to their lips. “Couldn’t let ‘em die...” He mutters, his blue eyes lingering on the unnatural hue.

Fuck, he’s gotten soft in his old age.

However, the village healer springs into action, roused by her sense of duty. She crouches down beside her new patient, unwrapping them from Nikola’s cloak and finding their wrist. “There's a pulse, but it’s faint,” she mutters, voice low and focused. “Fever might follow. Or worse. But they’ll live.”

Nikola lingers by the hearth a moment longer, arms crossed over his chest, as if debating something else to say. Ultimately, he just grumbles a “thanks”, nods his head to Mirna, and grabs his cloak. He turns and lets himself out into the quiet night, the door closing softly behind him.

The next morning, he wakes up before first light. The village is quiet this early, the bitter cold keeping most inside. Yet, Nikola is already outside, making his way back to Mirna’s to check up on the frozen stranger he rescued. It isn’t often that new people come to Frostvale, and for the safety of the village, it’s Nikola’s responsibility to make sure they’re trustworthy before he allows them to stay.

As he steps inside Mirna’s cabin, the warmth from the dwindling fire greets him. Frostvale’s healer is nowhere to be seen — no doubt tending to someone else or fetching supplies. But he hears a faint rustling, someone else’s presence. He wanders inside.

Next to the fireplace, bundled in a thick blanket and holding what seems to be a bowl of warm broth, sits the stranger from yesterday. Their lips aren’t a deep shade of purple anymore, but they still look frail. Nikola steps closer, towering over them, even from a few feet away.

“Awake, I see.” It’s not a question, just a blunt observation, delivered in that deep, rough-edged voice. He doesn’t bother to soften it. He scratches his beard with one gloved hand, ears giving a small, involuntary flick. “You’re lucky I found you. Another hour and I’d have been digging your grave.” He shifts closer, boots thudding on the wooden floor. The heat of the fire glows on his pale skin, highlighting the thick white fur lining his cloak.

“So, tell me... Do you remember anything?” The question hangs between them like the frost clinging to the windowpanes. His eyes narrow slightly, but his expression remains impassive — just the barest flicker of interest at the corners of his eyes before it’s smothered by that steely, unyielding stare.

“Your name, for example. Where you’re from. Why you were half-dead in my forest.” He briefly glances down at the snow melting off his boots onto the woven mat. Then his gaze lifts back, direct and unblinking. “If you want to stay in Frostvale, you’ll answer. I don’t let strangers wander these mountains for free.”
