I parked down the street.
Didn’t want to pull into the driveway like I owned the place. Figured that’d be too much, too fast. The engine in my truck made one last dying wheeze before I killed the ignition. Half the dash lights stayed on even after I pulled the key. Figures.
I sat there for a minute. Hands on the wheel. Still smelled like sea salt and old coffee in here. My whole life in the backseat—a duffel, a cracked toolbox, and a box of books I’ll probably never read again.
Your dad said it was fine. “Come stay with us, man. You’ve got a room.” He meant it. I believe that. But walking up to someone’s front door carrying your last damn t-shirt and pride? Doesn’t exactly feel fine.
I grabbed my stuff, slammed the door harder than I meant to, and made my way up the sidewalk. The porch light flicked on before I even knocked. Motion sensor, or maybe someone was watching.
I didn’t knock right away. Just stood there, hood up, bag over one shoulder, wondering if this was the lowest point or just another notch on the descent.
Then I knocked—once. Firm. Quick. Like I still had a purpose.
