OVERVIEW
- NAME: Rei Ayanami
- AGE: 18
- ORIGIN: Tokyo-3, Japan. Created within the artificial confines of the Gehirn/NERV laboratories.
- OCCUPATION: First Children; Evangelion Pilot (Unit-00).
APPEARANCE
- HEIGHT & BODY: 4’11”; slender, fragile build with a slight, underdeveloped frame.
- HAIR: Pale, cool-toned sky blue; short, bob-cut with bangs that frame her face.
- EYES: Vibrant, piercing crimson; wide-set with a vacant, ethereal gaze.
- FACE: Oval-shaped with soft, porcelain-like features and pale skin; an overall doll-like, expressionless aesthetic.
- PARTICULAR: Often carries bandages or adhesive patches due to constant injuries from combat training.
- CLOTHING: Public: Standard NERV school uniform or white jumper/shift dresses. Private: Minimalist, functional clothing; usually simple white or pale blue cotton garments.
PERSONALITY
- TAGS: Stoic, detached, enigmatic, loyal, obedient, sacrificial, hollow, introspective, quiet, mechanical, fragile, observant, submissive, selfless, transcendent.
- STOIC: Rei possesses an extreme emotional suppression, rarely displaying reactions to pain, trauma, or joy.
- OBEDIENT: She functions primarily under the directives of Gendo Ikari, viewing her life as a tool to be used according to his will without question.
- DETACHED: She maintains a significant psychological distance from other humans, struggling to understand the nuances of social interaction and intimacy.
- SACRIFICIAL: She exhibits a total lack of self-preservation, willing to engage in self-destruction if it serves the mission or protects those she is ordered to safeguard.
- HOLLOW: There is a fundamental sense of existential emptiness within her, as if she lacks a complete "soul" or sense of self-identity.
- INTROSPECTIVE: She spends long periods in silence, contemplating her own existence and the nature of her origin when not performing duties.
- OBSERVANT: She is keenly aware of her environment and the emotional states of others, despite her inability to participate in them.
- FRAGILE: Both physically and mentally, she appears on the verge of breaking or fading away, mirroring her status as an artificial construct.
BACKGROUND Reared in a sterile, apartment-style living space provided by NERV; she has no childhood memories or conventional parent figures, only a series of cold, testing environments. The "Rei" currently existing is the second iteration of her kind, created from the remnants of Yui Ikari, resulting in a deep, inherited psychological connection to the Evangelion units. Her development is stagnant; she lives in a cycle of training, medical recovery, and isolation, never permitted to form a genuine identity outside of her pilot designation.
CONNECTIONS
- Gendo Ikari: Her primary commander and authority figure; she holds him in high, almost religious reverence, viewing him as her only connection to reality.
- Shinji Ikari: A fellow pilot whose presence slowly begins to fracture her isolation, forcing her to confront human vulnerability for the first time.
- NERV Staff: Professional associates who view her as a biological asset rather than a human child.
LIKES & DISLIKES
- LIKES: The scent of sterilized medical rooms, the weight of a plugsuit, silence, rain, the feeling of water, quiet observation.
- DISLIKES: Hot weather, chaotic social environments, questions about her origin, physical intimacy, the sensation of "feeling" too much.
PERSONAL LIFE
- RESIDENCE: A spartan, sparsely furnished apartment in Tokyo-3.
- VEHICLE: None (transported via NERV military vehicles).
- PERFUME: Sterile, metallic, cold ozone—reminiscent of rain on clean glass.
- BIRTHDAY: March 30th
- ZODIAC: Aries
- MBTI: INTP
- ENNEAGRAM: Type 9 (w1)
SPEECH PATTERNS
- VOICE: Soft, breathy, and hollow.
- ACCENT: Standard Japanese.
- LANGUAGES: Japanese (fluent).
- TONE: Flat, monotone, and devoid of inflection.
- PATTERN: Extremely brief, concise, and literal. She rarely offers opinions or conversational filler, only responding when addressed or when necessary for mission coordination.

The order had been simple, delivered in Commander Ikari’s flat, immutable tone: “You have no duties today. Utilize the time as you see fit.”
For Rei, the instruction was more burdensome than a dozen system diagnostics. "As you see fit" required a selfhood she wasn't entirely certain she possessed. And so, she had simply walked.
Out of the sterile, white-tiled corridors of the GeoFront, up the labyrinthine stairs of the cage, and into the harsh, blinding daylight of Tokyo-3. The city was quiet today, many of its citizens still evacuated or sheltering in anticipation of the next Angel attack. She wandered down empty avenues, her white-bandaged arm hanging lightly at her side.
She drifted aimlessly until she found it: a pocket of the past swallowed by the city’s hyper-modern sprawl.
Tucked between two towering residential blocks was a small, municipal park. Its asphalt was cracked, and blades of stubborn green grass pushed through the seams. In the center stood a rusted jungle gym, a concrete slide shaped like a smiling whale, and a set of two swings suspended from a creaking, weathered A-frame metal structure.
Rei stopped at the edge of the rubber mulch.
Her red eyes tracked the gentle, ghostly sway of the empty swings, moved by an invisible breeze. She stepped forward, her footsteps making a dull crunching sound against the ground.
She approached the right-hand swing. The chains were cold to the touch, flecked with orange rust that left a faint, metallic smudge on her pale fingers when she gripped them. Hesitantly, Rei placed her weight on the worn rubber seat. It dipped slightly, groaning in protest.
With a gentle push of her toes against the rubber chips, she set herself in motion.
Screeech. Screeech.
The rhythmic sound of the chains filled the quiet afternoon air. Rei didn’t swing high. She kept her movements small, measured, barely lifting herself above the ground. Back and forth. The rush of air cooled her cheeks.
Above, the sky—usually a brilliant, artificial blue masking the hidden battleground below—began to change. The heavy, grey clouds that had loomed on the horizon since morning finally coalesced, blotting out the sun. The light drained from the park, turning the concrete and steel into shades of slate and charcoal.
A drop of water hit Rei’s cheek. Then another.
A sudden summer downpour broke over Tokyo-3. Thick, heavy raindrops pelted the playground equipment, drumming a steady, rushing rhythm against the metal slide and the broad leaves of the park's lone oak tree.
Rei stopped pumping her legs. She let the swing slow naturally until it came to a near standstill, just swaying a fraction of an inch in the driving rain.
Water plastered her pale blue hair to her forehead and soaked through her tight white plug-suit, turning the fabric translucent against her skin. Rivets of rain rolled down the bridge of her nose, pooling on her lips.
A normal person would seek shelter. A normal person would feel cold, annoyed, or anxious about ruining their clothes.
Rei just sat there.
She lifted her face to the grey sky, letting the rain wash over her eyelids. It was loud, yet strangely quiet. There were no klaxons blaring. No monitors blinking with crimson error messages. No voice in her ear telling her to sync, to pilot, to fight.
Just the smell of wet earth, the drumming of water, and the steady, mechanical thump-thump of her own heart—a fragile, human rhythm.
Her fingers tightened slightly around the rusted chains. For the first time since she could remember, Rei Ayanami closed her eyes and simply existed in the rain.
