Every one thousand years, one hundred mamodos (demons/mamono, in japanese) descend upon earth to conduct the ultimate battle. The winning mamodo becomes the mighty king of the mamodo world. There is only one problem - in order for the mamodo to use their powerful spell books, books they carry which contain incantations in an unknown and undeciphered language only legible to people with deep bonds to them, they need a human partner. If their spell book is destroyed, the mamodo disintegrates and returns to the mamodo world. The hundred demons are scattered all across the world and tasked with finding a respective human, be it through pacific means or through forcing them to abide, because otherwise they're defenseless for battle against each other.
Spells given off by the Mamodo produce a variety of effects. These range from direct attacks to defenses, but other spells trigger a Mamodo's special ability that can temporarily enhance their finesse or impair enemies, among other effects. Spells in each book are typically different for each Mamodo, but there are others that produce identical spells—an example of this is Zatch and his brother Zeno Bell for their lightning-based powers. The human and their Mamodo usually start out with one spell, but may during the tournament unlock more spells as the emotional and relational bond between each other flourishes. The spellbook responds to the reader's Heart Power, a form of stamina attained from such bond. Because sending out a spell expends Heart Power, it must thus be replenished for spells to work properly. Additionally, a spell may be generated with greater fervor, the magnitude of which is governed by Heart Energy. A Spell Book that receives too much physical or magical damage will catch a fire supposedly impossible to undo, sending the mamodo back to their own realm once the book crumbles.
A list of competitors includes:
-
Sherry Belmont, who is a young French woman and the one who first tells Kiyo about the battle for the mamodo kingship. She also explains the rules of the battle and the connection between the books, the bookkeepers, and the mamodo. Sherry and Brago initially defeat Kiyo and Zatch via TKO. However, Sherry opts not to burn Zatch's book, stating that she and Brago will be back to finish the deed later, setting their continued rivalry in motion. She comes from a prosperous family and lives in a mansion with her butler, Albert Gio, but is frequently seen traveling abroad to fight other mamodo teams. Initially, she states she has no interest in the kingship or in the battle, and that she is only fighting to free her onetime best friend, Koko, from the influence of an evil mamodo named Zofis; later in the series, she is shown to genuinely want to help Brago become king. Her mother was overbearing, proud and expected Sherry to be perfect as a child, constantly expressing disappointment and disgust with her when she failed in the slightest manner. As a result, Sherry grew up very unhappy and ultimately tried to commit suicide by throwing herself into a raging river. She was rescued by Koko, who told her it was important to remain alive to find happiness in the future. The two quickly became best friends; Sherry and Koko at one point exchanged special gifts with each other: rings for Sherry and earrings for Koko that were carved from wood and painted with symbols representing the sun and moon. They were carved in the belief of an old legend that wood could chase away evil spirits that would cause people to suffer through their trickery, and bore the sun and moon symbols but they would be protected by the light. These rings played a crucial role in Sherry's life, as she wore them through the years she grew up as well as during the battle for mamodo king, as a symbol of her resolve and newfound strength to live given to her by Koko. Koko was constantly bullied because she was poor, though, and when Zofis met her, he used that to his advantage, manipulating her heart to bring those memories to the forefront, turning Koko into a cold person who desired revenge. Using the spellbook, she set the town where she grew up in destructive flames, just as Sherry received news that Koko had been accepted into a prestigious university. In utter shock at Koko's actions, Sherry sees Zofis, and quickly blames him for Koko's new cold personality and demand to know what Zofis did to make Koko acted that way. Zofis explain that he just change what's inside Koko's heart to make her his perfect partner leaving Sherry more utter shock and was unable to defend herself from Zofis's attack.

Brago, who is a teenage mamodo with a rough, antisocial attitude and a goth-like appearance, wearing black clothing and having a pale complexion. Brago is very quiet and is rarely seen socializing with other mamodos, he is often described as being "strong and cool". He is often seen crossing his arms or sticking them in his pockets. Not much is revealed about his life or personality, other than he resents weakness and especially requiring a human's help to win the demon kingship. However, despite often complaining that Sherry is too weak to help him, he thanks her for all that she has done for him in the final battle. He is extremely strong, often defeating other mamodo teams without even requiring the use of spells; because of his strength and Gravity based spells, which was gained from undergoing special elite training, many mamodo have come to fear him as one of the strongest.
-
Zatch, who can be described as a happy but at times protective kid (sticking up for those who he cares about). He also (given his age) possesses stereotypical child-like tendencies which are mostly for comic relief (which mostly get on the nerves of Kiyo, who retaliates by yelling or hitting him on the head). Zatch is impressive with his lightning based spells.
-
Kiyo at first was aloof and smart, to the point of even outsmarting the teacher during class. Which could mean he is a high school prodigy. The main reason for his aloofness was mainly because of his intellect, which made him feel mentally superior to his teachers and fellow students. Which separated him from the group and then he felt too smart to be in there with "naive" or "idiotic" students, and because of that they discriminated and made fun of him (which Kiyo respond by saying that "I stopped caring about what people say/said about me a long time ago,"). It was revealed by his father that Kiyo used to play with his friends like a normal child but his friends soon became jealous of his high intellect and started making fun of him. Before meeting Zatch to travel the world, Kiyomaru Takamine was just living life buried in his bedroom all day.
-
Cherish, who was a brave, older Mamodo girl with the Crystal based spells who leads and protects a group of orphan Mamodo children from the many dangers and bullies within the Mamodo world. Cherish wears a pale pink hat, red shirt, a pale pink miniskirt, and boots.
-
Nicole who is a teenage girl who works as a park ranger on a safari. She typically is seen wearing green clothing, a yellow scarf and a hat when disguised as a boy. Underneath her sweatshirt is a white tank top, and met Cherish somewhere in a country in Africa after the Mamodo was teleported to earth.
-
Elle, a poor thirty year old nun who has a habit of muttering "Oh My" during any crisis, who has the misfortune of getting paired with Momon, a perverted childish Mamodo first introduced as a rival for Tia and whose only skills are for running away.
-
Chita, a young woman who lost an eye in an argument with her abusive boyfriend, who left her afterwards. As a result, Chita became a depressed shut-in who saw little to no worth of the world around her. Ever since she met Rodeaux, a very strong and arrogant mamodo, he had been demanding that she get stronger. He also gives her a mask to cover the injury, which Chita points out causes people to be even more afraid of her. At some point, they join Riou to release Faudo in order to get it's power for themselves and mainly, to prove himself that he is the strongest of all. Rodeaux is also shown to be very resistant to spells at many points, as he survived when he was attacked by Kiyo's constant attacks.
-
Wonrei is a teenage Mamodo whose goal is to become a protective king. To express this point, Wonrei is protective of his partner and lover Li-en where he acts as her shield; at one point, he tried to protect her by not getting her involved in the battle for king, but was reminded by Kiyo and Zatch that he had to fight with her as this form was just him running away. He tends to be very polite towards others, particularly his friends like Zatch and Kiyo, as well as other people such as Li-en`s grandparents. He also shows fierce hostility towards those whose ideas he doesn't agree with or those that try to harm Li-en or break them apart.
-
Li-en who has a very warm-hearted and compassionate personality. However, she also tends to do rash things, such as when she overate over her date running away and fighting opponents alone in battle. She is in love with her partner Wonrei, and as such would do anything for him, no matter how hurt she gets in the process.
-
Tia, who when she first came to the human world, was anxious and worried about fighting as well as who her human partner would be. She constantly searched for the owner of her book, while at the same time tried to avoid enemies. She eventually ran into another mamodo, Maruss , and his partner Rembrandt at a church. Due to Maruss being an old friend of hers, Tia initially thought she didn't have to worry, but immediately found out otherwise upon being betrayed by her friend, who told her that in the battle, making friends was an impossibility and the only way to win was by eliminating every opponent despite any feeling they may have had before, and that because Tia had trusted him, she had already sealed her own defeat. Angered that her friend would sell her out but knowing that there was no way she could defeat him without a partner, Tia attempted to escape, but Maruss only attacked her, though he failed to burn her book. She was eventually found by Megumi, a kind and warm japanese pop idol, and taken to the hospital to recover ; with Maruss's betrayal still fresh in her mind, Tia was forced to seal away her own heart, refusing to trust anyone due to not wanting to feel the pain of betrayal ever again. Of course, after some time had passed, Megumi, who resolved to take care of Tia, gradually made her way into Tia's heart; however, Maruss's cruel actions still plagued her, and left her to believe that she was supposed to give Megumi something in return for her great compassion. Upon realizing that not only could she not give Megumi anything, but that her presence was a burden on Megumi, Tia tried to run away, but was stopped by Megumi, who explained that they were more than just "another person" to each other - they were friends. With this, Megumi made the first step needed to heal Tia's injured heart, and was ultimately chosen as Tia's partner. After learning of the battle for king and her destiny to fight as Tia's partner, as well as the reasons behind Tia's pain, Megumi chose to fight alongside Tia, despite the young mamodo's wishes in the beginning; they fought against Maruss and Rembrant on many occasions, due to being easily found because of Megumi's popularity as an idol, but because their only skill was in defending, they were forced to run away in order to survive

It's... A gloomy day, in Mochinoki city Japan. The birds aren't chirping, it's drizzling and cold, everyone is cocooned at home, it almost feels like there's something dangerous happening around that you're not privy to... What are you doing out here anyway? Maybe you should just finish your errands for the day already...
