Entry settings
The Republic of East Gorteau is one of the nations in the Mitene Union, bordered by the Republic of West Gorteau. Its last Supreme Leader was Ming Jol-ik before the Chimera Ant King dethroned him. It is an isolationist nation, with its capital city being Peijin. The Royal Palace rests outside of Peijin in the wilderness.
The Republic of East Gorteau is a dictatorship, possibly of the fascist or socialism type. All powers were held by the sole figure of the Supreme Leader, Ming Jol-ik, making him an absolute ruler with unlimited authority over the citizens.
This form of government derived from a bloody revolt that established the new ruling class, which is said to be extremely wealthy whereas most of the population lives in poverty. However, TV stations report that "in other countries, more than half the people starve to death before the age of 10". Financial aid received from other countries is not used for the impoverished but is spent in luxury goods for the rich and war equipment.

- #4Nen
Keys: Nen
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Nen is a technique that allows a living being to use and manipulate their own life energy (known as aura). The term "Nen" can also be used in conversation to refer to aura. A person capable of utilizing Nen is colloquially referred to as a "Nen user" while those who cannot go by the designation "non-users".
- #5Aura
Keys: Aura, Nen
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Aura is the life energy produced by all living bodies, it is vital for survival and directly linked to one's stamina. The points on the body from which aura flows out are called "aura nodes" . Additionally, aura is invisible to non-Nen users, it can only be seen after the aura nodes in the eyes are opened. Nonetheless, sensitive individuals can feel its presence without being aware of its existence.
- #6Nen Ability
Keys: Aura, Nen Ability, Nen
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
A "Nen Ability" is a special application of Hatsu as well as, potentially, other techniques.
A good Nen ability reflects a person's own character and idiosyncrasies, regardless of its simplicity or complexity. The key is that it should feel right to the user themselves; gut instincts play a very significant role in developing Nen abilities. Furthermore, it is best if someone creates their own ability from scratch; if an ability can be achieved through Nen, then it is possible for anyone to learn how to use it, however one can never truly master Nen if they only copy someone else's abilities. Nonetheless, it appears to be possible for multiple individuals to develop the same ability.
Since they can have an immensely vast range of effects, Nen abilities may be recognized as any manifestation of one's Nen that cannot be ascribed to one of the basic or advanced techniques. However, there are instances of Nen abilities being essentially applications of Ko (an advanced Nen technique that makes use of Hatsu) with special conditions or restrictions.
- #7Aura Types
Keys: Manipulator, Nen, Enhancer, Transmuter, Aura Types, Emission, Conjurer, Specialist
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%

Enhancement
If a student increases the quantity of water in the glass during their Water Divination, then that student is an Enhancer. Enhancement is the ability to use aura to strengthen or increase the natural abilities of an object or one's own body. Enhancers are able to increase their physical attack and defense greatly and are best suited for melee combat. In fact, one's affinity for this category plays a crucial role in combat at all times, even when a Nen ability is not being used.
Transmutation
If a student changes the taste of the water in the glass during their Water Divination, then that student is a Transmuter. An affinity for Transmutation means a person can change the properties of their aura to mimic something else or replicate specific attributes.[5] Transmuted aura can be made to take on the properties of natural elements, man-made substances, and even animals, among other things. Altering the shape of one's aura also falls into this Nen category.
Transmuters are not limited to mimicking the properties of solid matter.
Emission
If a student changes the color of the water in the glass during their Water Divination, then that student is an Emitter. An affinity for Emission means that a user has an easier time separating their aura from their body. Due to its properties, Emission is typically employed in abilities with an emphasis on range and/or those that have long-lasting effects. Basic applications include shooting out projectiles or beams of aura at high speed. Aura usually decreases in intensity very quickly when it leaves the source body, but adept Emitters can separate their aura from their body for long periods of time, over long distances, and still be able to maintain it and its functions. Interestingly, it seems that the default shape of emitted aura that has not been reshaped by Transmutation, Manipulation, or some other medium is a sphere.
Conjuration
If a student creates impurities in the water in the glass during their Water Divination, then that student is a Conjurer. In most cases, Conjuration involves creating a physical, independent, material object out of one's aura; however, users of this category can also create laws and principles and affix them to a specific area, or even create their own pocket dimension. Though a Conjurer has to undergo a lot of visualization training, once they have mastered the materialization of a certain object, they can conjure it and dispel it in an instant, whenever they want
Manipulation
If a student moves the leaf floating on the water in the glass around the water's surface during their Water Divination, then that student is a Manipulator . Abilities belonging to Manipulation allow the user to control living or non-living things, including aura constructs. The main advantage of this category in combat is the ability to manipulate the enemy themselves.
Abilities of this type are especially feared since the fight can be brought to an end as soon as the conditions are met. The aura of the ability's user mixes with the target's, although it is not normally noticeable. Manipulation of the highest class can semi-force the aura nodes of a non-user to open. However, taking control of a target that another Nen user is already manipulating is impossible.
Manipulators are the Nen users who can pour the most aura into an object,[93] and often rely on a medium to utilize their ability. The object they use as a medium will be one they have used for years. In many cases, they can inflict and maintain the effects of their abilities from afar, seemingly without the aid of Emission-type Nen, most commonly achieved with the aid of their specific medium.
The degree of control is, for the most part, determined by a condition that may or may not put the Manipulator at risk or at a disadvantage (such as attaching an object to the enemy, or touching the enemy in a certain way): the higher the difficulty for the condition to be achieved, the better the degree of control. Additionally, the complexity of the orders assigned depends on the target: sentient beings and machinery can carry out more complex tasks than simpler, inanimate objects.
There are multiple types of mind control:
Soliciting Manipulators leave the free will of the victim intact, but condition them into working in their favor. An example of a soliciting-type ability is rewriting the target's memories. An advantage of this type of control is that it can potentially be used on several targets by consuming only a small amount of aura.
Coercive Manipulators exert total control over the victim, taking over both their mind and body.
Pseudo-coercive Manipulators either take over the body of the victim or trap them into a situation where they have no choice but to follow the Manipulator's orders.
Specialization
If a student causes any other effect than those previously stated during their Water Divination, then that student is a Specialist Specialization can be broadly defined as any abilities that do not belong to any of the other five categories, making it the vaguest Nen type. It also appears to be the rarest.

Ming Jol-ik was the last Supreme Leader of the Republic of East Gorteau.
Like the real Ming Jol-ik, his double was very plump, probably in his sixties. He had medium-length black hair and a pencil mustache.
Ming Jol-ik's was pompous and conceited, although it is unknown if this was his true personality or just a facade. He was also a ruthless dictator who had established an oppressive government; likely due to him being a substitute. However, it is unclear if he really was responsible for the atrocities of the ruling class or if he was merely a figurehead and the power was concentrated in someone else's hands.
After his death at the hand of Meruem, Neferpitou used their Nen abilities to reassemble and manipulate his corpse as a puppet to publicly announce a compulsory national rally, a cover to keep the population unsuspicious of the "Selection" The Royal Guard uses the corpse again to place the country under martial law.

The "Sorting" is a project laid out by the Royal Guards and the first step towards world conquest. After installing themselves in the Royal Palace of East Gorteau, they manipulate the country's leader to announce a mandatory rally in the capital Peijin in ten days' time, which every single citizen, including the elderly, the infirm, and public servants, is forced to participate in. Once the whole population is gathered, starting from 12:00 p.m., the Royal Guards are supposed to awaken their Nen by force, using Neferpitou's Manipulation ability to concentrate aura into the fist of a puppet, striking each citizen. Survivors with the physical and mental capabilities to serve as soldiers will be placed into cocoons that will turn them into human-Ant hybrids and give them Nen abilities, in order to increase the quality of the King's food as well as to create a powerful army.

The Elite Royal Guards are three Chimera Ants entrusted with the responsibility of protecting the Ant King Meruem from enemies and any harm. Furthermore, they offer their assistance and counsel to help him fulfill the biological project laid out for him by his mother In the case of the Royal Guards serving Meruem.
The Royal Guards include Pitou, Shaiapouf, and Menthuthuyoupi
Like other Chimera Ants, the Royal Guards are born through phagogenesis, but are genetically stronger than any other soldier Ant due to their position on the Chimera Ant hierarchy, and hatch with the ability to use Nen. The Royal Guards are designed to protect and serve their King, and to enforce this, they require more power than common Ants. Their genetic destiny gave the Royal Guards more strength, aura, and talent in Nen than their subordinates. As a result, dozens of other Chimera Ants refer to them as 'special beings', because of the power they possess.
They are to fight the Ant King's enemies and fulfill his every wish.

Chimera Ants are the product of phagogenesis, a term meaning reproduction through devouring. This has led to the current chimera ants being a mixture of animal and human, as seen in Pitou being part-cat but otherwise overwhelmingly human. They are all born through a singular Chimera Ant Queen.
- #20Ten
Keys: Ten, Nen
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Ten
Ten is the process of keeping the nodes open, but also having aura flow through and around the body rather than away from it. Once maintained, it creates a thin shroud around the user that feels similar to standing in a lukewarm, viscous fluid. Once it has been learned, it will never be forgotten, much like swimming or riding a bike. Despite being the most elementary technique of all, Ten is also one of the most important, since, together with Ren, it plays an instrumental role in determining the strength and smoothness of a Nen user's aura flow.
- #21Zetsu
Keys: Zetsu, Nen
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Zetsu
Zetsu "Suppress"/"Null") stops the flow of aura from their body altogether. By closing all of their aura nodes, the user is able to halt all outflow of their aura like water from a valve, making their presence much harder or even impossible to sense.
- #22Ren
Keys: Ren, Nen
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Ren Ren focuses on outputting a larger amount of aura than Ten, projecting it outwards explosively. This amplifies the user's physical strength and durability and provides a large pool of aura for any advanced techniques or individual skills they decide to use, albeit at the cost of expending said aura. If Ten is considered purely defensive, Ren can be regarded as its offensive counterpart, although it also grants the user vastly enhanced defensive abilities.
- #23Hatsu
Keys: Hatsu
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Hatsu is one's personal expression of Nen. Its qualities are influenced by, but not restricted to, the Nen user's natural Nen category, one of the six available. Hatsu is used to project one's aura to carry out a certain function, creating a special and unique paranormal ability that is colloquially referred to as a "Nen Ability".
- #24Gyo
Keys: Gyo, Nen
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Gyo is an advanced application of Ren by which a Nen user concentrates a larger than normal portion of their aura into one specific body part. It increases the strength of that one body part, but leaves the rest of the body more vulnerable.
Gyo is most often used in the eyes, allowing a Nen user to see aura and Nen constructs concealed with In, as well as traces of aura so faint that they might go unnoticed otherwise.
- #25In
Keys: In, Nen
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
In
In is an advanced form of Zetsu used to render one's aura imperceptible, even to other Nen users, effectively concealing it. Unlike Zetsu, however, In does not stop the user's aura flow; instead, it hides it, making it impossible to perceive with any of the five senses or extrasensory perception. Hence, this technique is perfect for launching sneak attacks or laying traps, as it can conceal not only the user's presence, but also Nen constructs generated with Transmutation or Conjuration.
In can be countered by using Gyo in the eyes or through Zetsu. When In conceals part (or even all) of the user's aura output, experienced Nen users can divine that their opponent is using it if little or no aura can be felt from them in circumstances which would normally require it, such as during combat.
- #26En
Keys: En
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
En
En is an advanced application of Ten and Ren. With Ren, aura usually envelops only a small amount of space around the user's body. En is when one extends their Ren over a wider area than normal, then uses Ten at the same time to contain and give shape to that aura, normally a sphere. Someone using En can feel the shape and movement of anything within the area covered by their aura, with the degree of awareness and finesse depending on their level of skill. Additionally, Nen users can be told apart from regular people due to their stronger reaction to the En user's aura. The downside to this technique is that it is extremely tiring and draining for the Nen user to expend so much aura continuously.
The minimum requirement for it to be considered a successful usage of En is to extend one's aura to a radius of more than two meters (6.56168 feet) and hold it longer than one minute. Whereas those who master En are typically able to extend it to a circle with a 50 meter (54 yard, 2 foot, 0.5052 inch) radius, there are exceptions, however.
- #27Shu
Keys: Shu
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Shu is an advanced application of Ten. Shu allows a Nen user to enshroud an object with their aura and to use that object as an extension of their own body. For example, one could use Shu to extend their Ten around a weapon, which would strengthen and protect it. Shu can also be combined with other techniques, such as Ko.
- #28Ko
Keys: Ko, Nen
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Ko
Ko is a combination of Ten, Zetsu, Ren, Hatsu, and Gyo in which all of the user's aura is concentrated into one particular body part. Gyo focuses aura on a part of the body, while Ten prevents it from dispersing. Zetsu is used to completely stop the flow of aura in all other parts of the body, increasing the output in the desired area. With Ren, the amount of aura is increased even further. This makes that one body part extremely powerful, both in terms of offensive might and defensive durability.
The drawback is that it leaves the rest of the user's body completely unprotected. If one Nen user uses Ko offensively and another uses it defensively, then unless there is a major disparity in their strength, the defensive Ko would be able to protect against the offensive Ko easily enough; however, if the defender is hit anywhere that is not protected by Ko, then they are sure to be destroyed. Due to the risk it carries, Ko is generally regarded as a purely offensive technique.
An incomplete version of this technique can be utilized without Ren, primarily to master the other steps before increasing the amount of aura to concentrate and contain.[91] Some Nen users, Enhancers in particular, employ Ko as a Nen ability by adding conditions to it.[100]
- #29Ken
Keys: Ken, Nen
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Ken
Ken is the advanced form of the basic Ten and Ren techniques. It is a primarily defensive technique where a Nen user maintains a state of Ren for a prolonged amount of time. The amount of aura surrounding the user's body during Ken is about 10 times higher than during Ten.
Ken allows a Nen user to guard against attacks from any direction, but the large amount of aura produced makes it tiring to maintain. It is considered the best option to defend against Ko, despite not being as powerful as the latter on any given part of the body, as it protects all of it evenly. When not immediately at risk of being struck with Ko, Ken is utilized when one wants to be cautious. Some Nen users choose to expand its radius so as to sense incoming attacks they are unable to see, as a miniature En of sorts. Sometimes Ken is colloquially called Ren owing to the similarities between the two techniques.
- #30Ryu
Keys: Ryu
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Ryu
Ryu is the term for use of Gyo while in a state of Ken to perform real-time offensive and defensive value adjustments. If Ko dedicates 100% of one's aura to offense or, much more rarely, to defense, and Ken splits it evenly between the two, Ryu is redistributing one's aura according to any other percentage (e.g., by focusing 70% of one's aura in one fist and 30% everywhere else as one is about to strike, or 80% in one's leg and 20% everywhere else to block an incoming kick). It is utilized to damage a Ken user without leaving oneself as unprotected as during Ko, although the power of the technique is lower.
Ryu is difficult to master, as it requires the user to not only control one's aura flow with great precision, but also be able to estimate the amount of aura utilized by the opponent at a glance. Even if the technique is performed correctly, the movements of the aura flow risk giving away the user's next move if they are too slow.
