- #1Dark Hour
Keys: 25th Hour, The dark hour, the dark hour, 25th hour, dark hour, Dark Hour, The Dark Hour
The Dark Hour (影時間, Kage Jikan)? is a phenomenon that occurs in Persona 3. The Dark Hour occurs for an hour every night as a time anomaly that takes place during 12:00 AM, and serves as the 25th hour hidden between one day and the next. As the phenomenon takes place, non-Persona users are transmogrified into coffins and remember nothing that happens during the Dark Hour once they awaken. Because of this, the general public is unaware of its existence.
It is not clarified what the range of the Dark Hour is and whether or not it appears outside of Japan as a worldwide phenomenon, or if it is exclusive to the timezone of Port Island, though it still appears at Yakushima. If it is a global phenomenon, then it can be assumed that it occurs at midnight for every timezone.
During the Dark Hour, the physical world is totally altered, mostly with respect to atmosphere and color. The buildings, the night sky, as well as the moon would assume a sickly green hue, while bodies of water turn crimson and thicken, resembling blood (or are actually blood), as evidenced by the fountain in Paulownia Mall and the sea seen during the monorail. Red liquid puddles form in random surfaces as well, even if there were no puddles there before. All electrical appliances cease to function unless the equipment is specifically made for use in the Dark Hour, such as those made by the Kirijo Group, like Mitsuru's motorcycle and the instruments in the Iwatodai Dormitory.
- #2Tartarus
Keys: Tatarus, tartarus, Tartarus, tatarus, Tower, tower
Tartarus (タルタロス, Tarutarosu)? is a part of the Thanatos Tower in Megami Ibunroku Persona and a massive tower that mysteriously appears each night at Gekkoukan High School during the Dark Hour in Persona 3.
In Persona 3, SEES is formed in an attempt to discover the true nature of the tower and defeat the Shadows. This location is the only place where the player can fight Shadows, except when they appear in outside locations during a Full Moon Operation.
Because it "grows" out of the ground every night, the layout of the tower is assembled randomly, except for certain key floors that never change. The tower consists of 6 blocks divided into subsections, at the end of which there are Arcana Guardians blocking the path to the next subsection. The aforementioned subsection divisions also have controllable teleport terminals that allows one to access the lobby and other previously unlocked subsection terminals in an instant unlike the one-way teleport devices found in random floors.
The stairs that connect to the next block will be totally inaccessible until the corresponding Major Shadow is defeated during each full moon phase, making it impossible to reach the top in one attempt.
There are 264 floors in total, including the roof and excluding the optional Monad Depths underground dungeon which consists of 10 floors.
- #3Full Moon Operations
Keys: Full Moon, Full moon, full moon
Full Moon Operations are a major series turn of events in the Persona 3 series. Full Moon Operations occur every month during every full moon. In these events, one or two unusually powerful Shadows will appear somewhere in Tatsumi Port Island, attempting to cause destruction to an area important to the island’s civilians.
During the day of nearly every Full Moon Operation, the protagonist cannot do anything during the daytime or the evening and must stay in the dorm to prepare whenever possible, the Velvet Room is inaccessible, and the game cannot be saved. The exceptions to this are the operations on June 8th (in Persona 3 and FES only, where the protagonist has free time after school) and January 31st, with the latter instead locking the party in Tartarus until they reach the top. Clearing a Full Moon Operation unlocks new floors on Tartarus for exploration, but the protagonist will become fatigued on the days following a Full Moon Operation and cannot explore these new floors instantly whenever they are available.
- #4Shadows
Keys: Shadows, shadow, shadows, Shadow
Shadows (シャドウ, Shadou)?/(影, Kage)? are the primary type of enemy in the Persona series, sharing many characteristics with the demons common elsewhere in the Megami Tensei franchise. They are born from humans and composed of suppressed human emotions, usually negative ones. Strong-willed Shadows attract lesser ones, which can combine into stronger Shadows.
The Dark Hour is a hidden twenty-fifth hour that takes place every midnight, during which the world comes to a stop and humans reflexively contain themselves in coffins, obliviously "playing dead" to protect themselves from the attention of the Shadows. Occasionally, a human will not transmogrify in this manner, and will quickly become prey of the Shadows, having their minds devoured and becoming vegetative (Apathy Syndrome). In some cases, people even become Shadows as their physical form dissolves. Only those with the potential to summon Personas, even if they can't be successfully summoned, are immune to this effect and function normally during the Dark Hour.
The bulk of the Shadows dwell in Tartarus. Each Shadow is defined by two characteristics: the body and the mask. The mask represents the Arcana of the Shadow, while the body helps define its name.
On each full moon after the protagonist's arrival to Tatsumi Port Island, powerful Shadows belonging to the first twelve major arcana appear outside Tartarus and threaten to wreak havoc. The Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad combats these enemies.
