Yakuko Etsushimaru (越司丸 益子, Etsushimaru Yakuko), Yakuneko (ヤクねこ), or simply Yaku (ヤク), is a long time friend to Yaniko and even looked up to her when they were younger.[1] Yakuko is shown to be the most extreme case of substance abuse, and is depicted as a jaded individual after various traumatizing incidents.
Appearance
Yakuko Etsushimaru is a catgirl beastfolk with chin-length blonde-yellow hair featuring black hair roots at the top of her head and matching blonde-yellow cat ears with pink insides with tufted fur inside. She has golden-amber eyes and a mild expression. Her outfit consists of an oversized muted teal t-shirt paired with loose, baggy charcoal-grey lounge pants. A slender, blonde-yellow cat tail extends from behind her waist, and she completes her low-maintenance look with a pair of simple dark thong sandals.
Height 155 cm
Personality
When Yakuko was younger, she was quite friendly, even befriending a lonely Hameko and giving all her attention to her, rejecting any other attempt to hang out with other people. Unfortunately, Hameko and Yakuko became distant after a realization of differences in their personalities.
In the present, she’s instead very laid back and quiet, often seen abusing various drugs like tobacco, marijuana, psilocybin mushrooms, liquid fentanyl, toad toxins, and even going as far as to make herself dizzy by spinning and then chugging a beer just to chase a high. Her drug abuse is a result of her troubled past and depressing present, suppressing her sorrows with her addiction. Her addiction hinders her will; however, she intends to be a normal person, but can’t get herself to cut back on the drugs.[9] In attempts to seem normal, she tries to hide the fact that she does illegal drugs, though she instead ends up incriminating herself by being obvious in her attempts.[9][10] Yakuko shows appreciation for her friends and tries to be a good one at that—especially to Yaniko, like when she offers her a job or goes shopping with Kaoruko to replace the shirt she ripped under her own delusions. She also accompanied Oya when driving to retrieve Aruko from a beach, in which the pair grew a stronger relationship through vibes and spectacle as opposed to emotional connection. As a beastman, she tends to act on her instincts, though not without resistance. In a game of Game of Life: Beastie Edition, Yakuko chose to be a human, whereas everyone else embraced themselves as a beastman.
Relationships
She adores Yaniko as her senpai in the present day, but she also sees the reality of the matter: that Yani is a useless womanchild slob 95% of the time, meaning she's got a senpai she really cares for, at the same time she's entirely aware of all her faults. It wasn't the case back in high school, but Yakuko was looking for anything to give her life meaning back then, which Yaniko filled in for her. In high school she would bully Hameko by calling her "Piss Fairy" like everyone else due to her habit of eating in the bathroom while having bladder problems. Even as adults, Yakuko still bullies Hameko from time to time, except that Hameko defends herself through aggression. History
It's all but stated that she's gone to jail before, probably for drug usage, which became a permanent stain on her record. Meanwhile, 156mg and the following chapter hint that she suffers from abusive parents to a degree that makes her actually appreciate Yaniko for simply having a parent who actually loves their child, becoming a delinquent to follow after Yaniko's toxic influence that she began smoking on school grounds and started her stressful path towards harder drugs. Ironically, it's because she threw Yaniko under the bus to save her own ass that Yakuko realized how badly this affected her own mind, and the drugs aside, she became a better person than Yaniko ever was. She claims to have a traumatic experience at one point of her life where she was referred to by a number, which is why she reacts so strongly to the number 12. This matches up with what some nastier stories say about the dehumanization in the Japanese prison system. Trivia
Yaku comes from yakubutsu, which is Japanese slang or shorthand for drugs or narcotics.

Hameko, otherwise known as Hame-chan or Hame Neko, is a tenant of the Beastman Apartment Complex and is a streamer.
Appearance
Hameko has short dark hair with her left side of her head covered with hair and her right side has a smaller strand, streaked with slivers of pink, she also has an upwards ahoge. Her eyes are a reddish brown. She is usually seen wearing a greyish-navy blue hoodie, with a pink top under it as well as jean shorts. She has a piercing right under the right side of her lip, as well as piercings plus earrings on her cat ears. Hameko has cat ears on her head that match her hair color, as well as a matching slim tail. Her outfit also may vary in different chapters and scenarios. Her chest is basically flat.
Personality
Hameko—officially registered as "Yurufuwa*Tenshi Hameko," rendered in English as Hameko Easygoing (Soft‑and‑Fluffy) Anal Angel—is an intensely insecure, gullible, and socially awkward NEET who is chronically online and desperately craves social validation. She suffers from severe naivety, making her exceptionally easy to fool, manipulate, or troll by almost anyone she meets. Underneath her outrageous internet personas and absurd handles, she is a deeply self‑conscious shut‑in who panics at the thought of being exposed as lonely or unsuccessful, constantly oscillating between desperate online bravado and real‑world social anxiety.
She has built her whole identity around an online persona—reinventing herself as the perfect, cutesy livestreamer complete with a gamer setup and all the right lingo to sell the image. She sprinkles in idol‑like charm for her camera and loves cheap "hame" combo characters in fighting games, but the persona is a complete fantasy. Underneath the cute exterior, she has real anger issues, is quick to anger, and frequently takes her frustrations out on her gaming equipment—a defeat sends her into screaming fits while smashing arcade cabinets or her own peripherals. She is easily flustered whenever something doesn't go her way, and despite the "soft angel" branding, she is genuinely aggressive when provoked.
She is a skilled fighting‑game player who smokes heated or electronic cigarettes so her room won't yellow. She has an unfortunate habit of urinating when stressed—a running gag that earned her humiliating nicknames. Despite her rage, she is partly a tragic figure: she was originally portrayed as a meek, friendly kid in middle school, and her hair‑trigger temper is implied to have developed as a coping mechanism after being bullied. Her "wrong genre savvy" moment—flying to America to compete in an "Ebo" fighting‑game tournament only to be sent back at customs for acting like a fighting‑game protagonist—perfectly captures her delusional, endearing gamer brain. She has essentially zero respect for other people's privacy, filming everywhere she goes and constantly landing herself in trouble.
Relationships
Hameko's most important and complicated bond is with Yakuko Etsushimaru, her high‑school classmate. The two were once genuine friends, with Yakuko pulling the shy Hameko out of her shrinking‑violet shell. However, after Yakuko fell in with Yaniko's delinquent circle, the pair split apart and Yakuko even bullied her—dubbing her the "Toilet Fairy" and poking at her bladder control issues. Even as adults, Yakuko still needles her from time to time, and now Hameko fights back through aggression instead of just taking it, leaving them in a physically hostile frenemy dynamic.
She also has a sitcom arch‑nemesis relationship with Shunran Nishi, whom she initially had the hots for at first sight. He relentlessly teases her with outrageous pranks and outlandish lies, which she reliably falls for every time, and now she constantly trolls and fights back against him.
Hameko resides as a tenant in Landlord Ootani's apartment complex, frequently hanging around Yaniko Satou and the rest of the neighborhood's degenerate circle. She streams the residents' chaotic daily life on her "Hame Channel," which repeatedly gets suspended because her candid footage of the apartment's weirdos accidentally breaks the platform's terms of service. She joins outings like the trip to the Alpha Tribe's tobacco village and even catches the eye of Kazushi and his bodyguards at the mahjong parlor.
While she constantly tries to project a cool, popular image around her fellow beastfolk neighbors, her transparent desperation and social clumsiness usually leave others viewing her with a mix of mild pity and deadpan exasperation. Her friendships, in other words, are as stuck in a rut as the rest of her unaddressed problems. History
Hameko is a cat‑girl beastfolk who retreated from mainstream society to live an unemployed, isolated life in Nyagamihara. As a pure beastfolk born to beastfolk parents, she was born without any legal surname. When she went to city hall to register "Easygoing*Angel" as her last name, a confused clerk mistakenly interpreted the asterisk symbol as the character for "anus," legally saddling her with the mortifying name "Yurufuwa Anaru Tenshi" (Easygoing Anal Angel)—a bureaucratic error that reflects the series' absurdist humor.
She was bullied in high school, notably by Yakuko, and one particularly cruel side of that history involved bladder control issues that earned her the unfortunate nickname "Piss Fairy" (or "Toilet Fairy") among her classmates. Another humiliating incident was the "Rainbow Maker" incident, when she wet herself while vine‑jumping at the tobacco village.
Rather than deal with that past directly, she built a new identity as a fighting‑game livestreamer running her own "Hame Channel," chasing the fantasy that if she just plays the part of a beloved, cutesy idol online, that fantasy might eventually become true. To cope with her overwhelming loneliness and lack of real‑world achievements, she sought escape through internet forums and social media, adopting infamous online alter egos like "Soft and Fluffy Anal Angel" to gain attention from strangers.
Despite the reinvention, her real‑world circumstances haven't actually changed, which is very much the point of her character: a band‑aid persona layered over problems she's never actually worked through. Her ongoing background revolves around her desperate attempts to maintain her digital reputation while hiding her unglamorous, vice‑adjacent reality alongside her equally chaotic apartment neighbors.

Kaoruko Nishi, or Kansai, is of the Nishi family along with Shunran, Junko, and an ambiguous father, Mako.
Appearance
Kaoruko Nishi is a cat-girl beastfolk with long, with straight olive gold color hair with brown hair grown around the top and matching pointed feline ears set atop her head. She carries a calm, neutral expression with olive gold color eyes featuring subtle lower-eyelid dot accents. Her outfit consists of a ribbed beige knit sweater styled with a high turtleneck, wide voluminous sleeves, and a prominent slit chest cut-out, paired with high-waisted, form-fitting black trousers. A olive gold cat tail extends from behind her waist, and she completes her sleek aesthetic with black open-toed platform sandals.
Height 168 cm
Personality
Kaoruko Nishi, nicknamed Kansaineko, is an amateur comedian catgirl from the Kansai region who is passionately devoted to making people laugh yet is tragically untalented at it—a "sad clown" whose puns and gags land with awkward silence, making her a deconstruction of the jokester Osakan archetype. She speaks in a prominent Kansai dialect, rendered as a Southern American accent in the English dub, and often litters her dialogue with quips referencing shows, people, TV programs, and movies—some of which are American. She always feels the need to make people laugh, but the humor comes from the gap between her ambition to be funny and how flat her jokes actually land.
She is a statuesque, fashionable beauty—the tallest catgirl before Debuneko arrived—and her fashion sense and makeup are considered the best among the beastfolk in the cast. She carries herself with calm, neutral confidence and maintains a stylish, well-put-together appearance compared to the unkempt residents around her. She is often described as short-tempered; when pushed past her threshold she erupts into frothing "angrish," and like her mother she has a sharp temper if sufficiently provoked.
Beneath her trendy exterior lies an equally chaotic lifestyle dominated by heavy drinking, gambling, and smoking—her cigarette of choice is Pianissimo. She is very self-conscious about how she's perceived, particularly insecure about her weight; her mother once noticed she gained weight and offered her baggier clothes, which may play into her fashion choices. Despite acting lazy and low-effort most of the time, she is actually quite competent when she decides to put in the work, clever enough to pull off elaborate pranks or antics, though she'll rarely admit she's capable of more.
Beneath the cringe comedy, she is arguably the most level‑headed, mature, and responsible member of the apartment: she has a normal life outside the building, genuinely worries about her friends' bad habits, drops the jokester act when things go too far, and is often the first to voice concern or bail people out of trouble. She lives a double life in which the public knows her as a cool, smart, beloved individual, while only the apartment cats see her desperate, unfunny comedic side. Relationships
Relationships
Aruko Sakai (Roommate): Kaoruko's most defining bond is with her alcoholic college student roommate. She constantly worries over her, bails her out of trouble, and helps care for her—so much so that the pair are routinely mistaken for mother and daughter due to Aruko's childlike appearance. Kaoruko doesn't exactly like this dynamic, but she still cares and tends to Aruko regardless. She saves Aruko's life on multiple occasions: noticing tremors during an earthquake, she runs to warn her; finding Aruko choking on her own vomit, she moves her head to the side; and when Aruko's alcohol-soaked hair catches fire, she puts out the flames and cuts her hair.
Yaniko Satou (Yanineko): Kaoruko shares a close, vice‑fueled bond with Yaniko, frequently joining her to smoke, drink, and waste money on gambling as kindred spirits in bad habits. However, her terrible jokes have become a running sore point—Yaniko's reactions to them have grown from mild annoyance into genuine, uncharacteristic anger over time. She tries to be a "cool big sis" to Yaniko, calling out her worst antics while gleefully broadcasting her farts on the neighborhood loudspeaker.
Shunran Nishi (Younger Brother): Kaoruko's relationship with her brother is defined by constant sibling bickering. Shunran, like her, is talkative and enjoys making quips, but when Kaoruko is subjected to them, they are often sexual. She generally finds him annoying and isn't shy about hitting him when provoked. That said, she does care for him deep down, keeping a photo of the two of them from childhood. Shunran bluntly notes that she greatly resembles their mother in temper—a remark that gets both mother and daughter threatening to slap him in the exact same manner.
Junko Nishi (Mother): Kaoruko shares a boisterous, loud personality with her mother, who also has a sharp temper. During New Year's visits, Kaoruko constantly wants to disassociate with her family collectively, and she gets defensive when Shunran compares her to Junko. Her father is never seen and is implied to be human, given the family bears his surname.
Other Residents: She shares long‑standing friendships with the other tenants and joins the Landlord and Yakuko in tracking down the wandering, drunk Aruko. She even joked (half‑seriously) that she wished the responsible Imoko were her own daughter. History
Kaoruko is a cat‑girl beastfolk who grew up in the Nishi household in the Kansai region alongside her younger brother under their mother, Junko. She is a college student attending a university in Machida and is believed to be a fourth‑year student, since she has already submitted her graduation thesis. Her nickname "Kansaineko" is a meaningful nod to the Kansai region's status as the heart of Japan's live comedy scene.
She is introduced as an aspiring amateur comedian, a role that quickly becomes a defining, if unflattering, part of her identity given how poorly her jokes tend to land. Her deep knowledge of 90s pop culture—such as B'z's "LOVE PHANTOM" and old shows like Zoom In!! Morning—has even sparked playful fan suspicions that she is older than she lets on.
Moving within the smoke‑filled community of Nyagamihara, her background is tied to the interconnected beastfolk families of her mother's generation, including long‑standing maternal friendships with Shizue Satou and Mizuna Kujou. Her day‑to‑day life revolves around balancing her keen interest in trendy fashion with her endless indulgence in alcohol, cigarettes, and pachinko parlor trips, cementing her role as a primary regular in the series' social circle. She returns with her brother Shunran to her family's Kansai home for the holidays in Episode 8 of the 2026 anime, which showcases her mother's boisterous personality.

Ochinpotaro (or Chintatsu-sensei), is a human tenant of the Beastman Apartment Complex and is a Doujinshi writer, known to write erotic manga.
Appearance
Ochinpotaro whose real name is Saori Tatsuno and who is also known by the alias "Witch of the North Sea," is depicted as a human woman with a reserved, weary appearance, featuring choppy, neck-length black hair with fringe bangs. She wears rectangular reddish-brown eyeglasses set over tired, heavy-lidded eyes and maintains a neutral, impassive expression. She sports a slim figure with a notably large bust covered by her simple crew-neck medium-blue t-shirt paired with straight-cut dark slate pants and grey-brown sneakers with white soles.
Height 158 cm
Personality
Saori Tatsuno is a reserved, weary, and impassive exterior—choppy tired eyes, messy hair, glasses, and little interest in fashion or makeup—owing to her day-and-night-reversed life as a working mangaka. She is an exasperated, deadpan, and chronically stressed chain-smoker who approaches her daily life with a weary pragmatism. She is easily overwhelmed by tight work deadlines and the absurdities of her environment, relying heavily on cigarettes to cope with constant pressure—she is partial to high-light menthol cigarettes.
Despite her rough, disheveled veneer, she is fundamentally kind, sensible, and remarkably perceptive. She maintains a relatively grounded and unbothered demeanor compared to the bizarre antics of those around her. She is a dedicated professional with high standards who prefers hand-drawn analog work, but her devotion to deadlines can push her into extreme, absurd situations.
Saori is reserved and socially anxious around strangers, often apologizing excessively due to her anxiety. However, she is surprisingly free-loving and uninhibited with her close circle, unafraid to get physically hands-on with the beastfolk girls for manga reference material. She has a doting, cat-obsessed side, frequently treating Yaniko like an actual pet with excessive cuddling and "cat-sniffing." While usually laid-back, she can be stern and firm when needed. She harbors quiet frustration over men fixating solely on her notably large chest. Relationships
As the only human resident of the Oya apartment building, Saori's most important relationship is with her apartment neighbor Yaniko Satou (Yanineko), a fellow smoker with whom she shares a strong mutual bond centered around nicotine cravings and casual idling. Although Yaniko crudely nicknames her "Mankasu," Saori frequently spends time with her and attempts to recruit Yaniko or other neighboring Beastfolk to act as draw assistants or reference models, which almost always ends in chaos—with results ranging from burned manuscript pages to their joint arrest. She is one of the few people able to partially "tame" Yaniko by leaning into her feline nature, even enjoying her unwashed scent and cigarette habits.
She shares a quietly considerate bond with the gruff landlord, whom she rescued from an embarrassing predicament during an earthquake incident. She is looked up to by the building's beastfolk residents—such as aspiring writer Yomuko Kaku (Jikakineko) and the other catgirls—as the slightly older, employed woman whose advice they frequently seek. Saori serves as a mentor figure to Yomuko, offering writing advice and acting as a straight man to the aspiring writer's naivete.
Professionally, she deals with Kazushi, the intimidating yakuza-esque editor-in-chief of Nyan Magazine, where her work is serialized, and her struggling sales lead her to rely on temp assistants and neighbors alike. Her professional relationship is strained by her poor sales. Her parents constantly pressure her to marry suitors who only objectify her.
Even her more comedic connections leave a mark: her overwhelming affection constantly exasperates Yaniko, and a single lariat she delivered to Hameko left the streamer traumatized while awakening an indescribable sensation in Saori herself. History
Saori Tatsuno is a 32-year-old human woman living in an apartment complex predominantly inhabited by Beastfolk. She works professionally as a struggling erotic and normal manga artist under the crude male-sounding pen name "Ochinpo Tatsuro" (often rendered or referred to as Ochinpotaro), a vulgar pseudonym that reportedly originates from a rejected ero-doujinshi pen name idea. She is nicknamed "Mankasu"—short for "the mangaka cigarette butt"—by Yaniko and the narrator.
Her career has known real hardship: her published work does not sell very well, and a serialization in a general youth magazine was canceled, leaving her emotionally devastated. Her backstory revolves around the perpetual grind of trying to meet publication deadlines while managing a low-budget, cigarette-fueled routine. She famously complains she "thought I was going to die for real" when struggling with overlapping ero-manga and nyan-manga deadlines.
As a change of pace, she began attending arranged marriage meetings around age 32, only for every suitor—a wealthy-looking man, a sleazy guy, and a muscular bodybuilder—to reveal ulterior motives and the matches to fall through.
Her current gloomy, unfashionable image hides a more impressive past: she was the ace of her high school volleyball team with a powerful shoulder and athletic strength she still possesses today. Before becoming a mangaka, she was an infamously ferocious player known by the fearsome moniker "Witch of the North Sea."

The Landlord is one of the main characters of the Chainsmoker Cat franchise, otherwise is known as one of the main humans in the anime. He is the landlord of the Beastman Apartment Complex.
Appearance
The Landlord—real name Oya Otani is depicted as a toned fat-set human man in his 40s with a completely bald head and a stocky build featuring a round midsection, and an intimidating "face of a thug" defined by thick, prominent eyebrows and eyes that are perpetually shrouded in shadow, giving him a perpetually stern and gruff expression; a tiny nose, and a small, downturned mouth. His minimalist outfit consists of a plain crew-neck grey t-shirt paired with dark charcoal trousers and simple open-toed black strap sandals.
Height 170cm
Personality
Ouya Ootani is a gruff, heavyset, bald man with an intimidating, thug-like appearance—his eyes are perpetually shrouded in shadow and his neck is exaggeratedly thick. He is stout, with a perpetually beleaguered, cranky demeanor, yet beneath his fearsome exterior lies a genuinely caring, kind, and decent soul. He is a hardworking, community‑minded man who spends his time tending his garden or working with the local fire department when not managing the apartment building.
He detests smoking with a visceral passion and repeatedly tries to get Yaniko to quit, yet his trauma from childhood makes cigarette smoke blown in his direction trigger a full‑blown panic attack. Though he presents himself as a perpetually beleaguered landlord, he is an extreme doormat who cannot bring himself to evict even his most destructive tenants—regularly forgiving their shortcomings, buying them food, and stepping in to assist them. He is exceptionally patient, compassionate, and empathetic, serving as one of the few grounded, responsible adults in his community.
Beneath his gruff exterior, he hides an embarrassing secret side as a covert pervert with a fetish for beastfolk girls. He privately indulges himself with a beast‑girl sex doll—specifically a dog‑girl doll—and struggles to conceal his one‑sided attraction to tenants like Yaniko. He pays Shunran to record imitations of Yaniko's voice for his private use. However, he keeps these tendencies strictly behind closed doors and remains a respectful, protective, and reliable figure in public who never abuses his authority. He has firm moral lines: he feels zero attraction toward his niece Hikineko and views Yakuko as a daughter figure rather than a lust object. Relationships
As the landlord of the dilapidated apartment complex, Ouya is the reluctant caretaker of a revolving circus of dysfunctional beastfolk tenants. His relationships are defined by this role.
With Yaniko Satou, his primary tormentor, he shares the most chaotic dynamic. She regularly subjects him to physical abuse, dumps trash on him, burns cigarettes on his warts, and knocks him out with her farts. She exploits his inability to evict her, all while he simultaneously harbors a deeply repressed sexual fixation on her. Despite this torment, he is endlessly patient with her.
He shares a more companionable bond with Yakuko, whom he sees as a daughter figure. He offers her genuine emotional support and fatherly concern, and they team up to track down the wandering, drunk Aruko together. His relationship with his niece Hikineko is far more strained—his family sent her to live at the apartment, and he tries to push the shut‑in toward employment and independence, only to be exploited as an easy enabler. Still, he is a far more loving parental presence than her abusive parents.
He extends gruff kindness to the homeless Penpenneko squatting on his grounds, at one point saying the two are close enough to be like family. He tolerates the rest of his oddball tenants—Mankasu, Kansai, Hameko, and the others—with a mixture of frustration and genuine affection, going so far as to save them from a deadly New Year time loop at his own expense. He shows a particularly thoughtful and protective side toward vulnerable residents, opting to respect their boundaries while quietly looking out for their well‑being.
He even maintains cordial, if occasionally awkward, interactions with the human mangaka Saori, who only manages to arouse his fetish after donning fake cat ears. His dedication to his tenants is mirrored outside the story as well: his voice actor famously shaved his head to perfectly resemble the bald Landlord when promoting the anime. History
His real name is Oya Otani—though everyone simply calls him "Landlord"—and he is a 45‑year‑old human man managing an apartment building in Nyagamihara.
Beneath his tough exterior lies a dark and troubled past. He endured a brutal childhood under an abusive, alcoholic, chainsmoking parent who forced him to cater to the addiction and blew cigarette smoke directly in his face. This trauma explains both his hatred of smoking and why Yaniko's smoke reminds him of his abusive father. He was pushed into the workforce immediately after graduating middle school. Flashbacks reveal he has had his unconventional, "gonk"‑like appearance since boyhood, though a photograph from his early adulthood shows he was once strikingly handsome with chiseled features and neatly groomed hair before age and stress took their toll.
Despite that hardship, he grew up to own and manage the apartment building, becoming one of the series' deuteragonists. His difficult background gave him a unique perspective on human flaws and addiction, instilling in him a deep capacity for sympathy rather than judgment. Consequently, he manages an affordable housing complex where flawed individuals and substance‑dependent beastfolk can find a place to live, quietly acting as a pillar of stability for those who need a second chance. His deep compassion for beastfolk is shown by his willingness to let chaotic tenants like Yaniko keep living under his roof, striving to be a positive influence on them despite the fact that his own unresolved childhood trauma and repressed desires constantly place him at the center of the very chaos he tries to prevent.

Aruko Sakai is a beastfolk young woman with distinct feline features, as well as one of the tenants of the Beastman Apartment Complex. She is one of the major characters in the Chainsmoker Cat franchise.
Appearance
Aruko Sakai is a cat-girl beastfolk in her twenties with long, wavy auburn hair styled with a small topknot at the crown, pointed cat auburn ears with pink interiors, and perpetually half-lidded, gentle eyes that give her a perpetually relaxed and easygoing expression; she has a slim, fair-skinned build and is typically dressed in an oversized beige hoodie with white drawstrings and striped green-and-white cuffs, paired with dark green shorts and black canvas sneakers, while her fluffy auburn tail peeks out from behind, her overall demeanor is frequently characterized by a lazed demeanor and physical shakiness from alcohol deprivation.
Height 140 cm
Personality
Aruko Sakai, known as Aruneko, is an extremely easygoing, lazy, and self‑centered catgirl whose entire life revolves around alcohol and napping. She would rather drink the days away than be productive, skipping classes so often that her grades are failing, and neglecting eating and bathing for days. Her severe alcohol dependency drives most of her behavior—she lives in a near‑constant state of intoxication, and if she goes even an hour without a drink, her hands shake so violently it can rattle the whole apartment building.
Despite her innocent, childlike appearance, her daily life is completely dominated by alcohol, which she consumes not for the taste, but to chase constant euphoria. When intoxicated, she turns happy and cheerful, but that same impulsiveness sends her wandering off to distant, unpredictable places, blacking out along the way. Her irresponsibility comes to the forefront as she routinely passes out in random public places, wanders off helplessly, and demonstrates a total disregard for her own safety.
Her mellow, chill demeanor while drunk is actually a deconstruction: when sober she is far more anxious and worried, and she actively uses drinking to suppress those emotions, making her laid‑back attitude a symptom of her addiction rather than a genuine personality trait. She is deeply unmotivated and irresponsible, neglecting her academic performance to spend her days drinking and sleeping. Despite being "all about me" when it comes to her lazy time and her bottle, she is willing to share her alcohol and quietly be there for her friends. She refers to herself with the masculine pronoun "boku," adding to her quirky, off‑kilter presence. She is a non‑smoker herself but is tolerant of others' smoking.
Her short stature and childlike looks lead strangers to assume a little girl is drinking. She suffers from severe withdrawal symptoms and gets notably irritated whenever someone pesters her to better herself, burying herself right back into the alcohol to flee such conversations. Her name is literally short for arukoru, the Japanese pronunciation of "alcohol." Relationships
Aruko's closest bond is with her roommate Kaoruko Nishi (Kansaineko), who worries over her like a parent, bails her out of trouble, and helps care for her. Kaoruko saves Aruko's life on multiple occasions: she moves her head to the side when she's choking on vomit, and when Aruko's alcohol‑soaked hair catches fire from a lit cigarette hidden inside it, Kaoruko puts out the flames and cuts her hair. The pair are routinely mistaken for mother and daughter due to Aruko's childlike appearance—a running gag that Kaoruko doesn't exactly enjoy, though she still cares deeply for her roommate.
Aruko is a close friend of Yaniko Satou, part of the same tight‑knit, dysfunctional circle living around the apartment complex. Yaniko frequently drops by her room for free drinks, and the two share a bond over destructive vices. She is also a fellow university student alongside Kaoruko, who attended the same school as her and witnessed her transformation firsthand.
Despite being 24 and technically older, Aruko ends up treated almost like a child within the group. Protective figures like Landlord Ootani and Yakuko Etsushimaru (Yaku‑neko) keep a GPS tracker hidden in her massive hair to track her down and rescue her whenever she wanders off drunk—the Landlord has even driven out as far as Enoshima to retrieve her.
She also accidentally gains a caretaker in Imoko Satou, who at first mistakes her for a cute child and then babies her anyway, becoming so attached that it makes Yaniko jealous and sparks a depressing "who is more pathetic" competition between Aruko and Yaniko for Imoko's attention. Her chaotic drinking habits mean her friends and the landlord frequently have to go out searching for her, showing that beneath the exasperation, people do look out for her. History
Aruko is a college student in her mid‑twenties who has been held back multiple times—technically in her third year despite her age. Her short stature and childish face often get her mistaken for an elementary schooler, creating an ironic contrast with her actual age and severe addiction.
Her backstory is a sad inversion of "she cleans up nicely." Prior to turning twenty, Aruko led a fairly normal, earnest, and serious life. She looked completely normal in high school before discovering alcohol through a university club, and she has been hooked ever since. According to Kaoruko, who knew her before, members of that club gradually turned her into the alcoholic she is now. Her life rapidly spiraled into severe dependency after trying alcohol for the first time.
Her drinking has progressed to the point of suffering withdrawal symptoms after a single hour without alcohol. A curt medical assessment warns that her liver is so damaged she'll die before she graduates college—if her failing grades don't stop her first. Yet, true to the series' black comedy, even this diagnosis doesn't keep her from relapsing back into her habits.
Financially, her story took a rough turn when she spent her entire tuition payment—about 2 million yen—on buying a car, forcing her to pick up work at a cosplay‑themed concept café just to make ends meet. Her appearance has wasted away to a practically anorexic state, her hair tied up in its signature topknot.

Yomuko Kaku or Jikakineko is a supporting character in the Chainsmoker Cat franchise.
Appearance
Yomuko Kaku is a cat-girl beastfolk with long, straight black hair styled in a sharp hime cut with blunt bangs and cheek-length sidelocks, pointed black feline ears with white fur interiors, and purple eyes; seen in a formal school uniform consisting of a dark navy double-breasted blazer with gold buttons, a crisp white blouse, a prominent red bow tie, a grey pleated skirt, dark knee-high socks, and black loafers, presenting a studious and diligent appearance befitting her aspirations as a writer, though her perpetually anxious demeanor and tendency to seek validation for her work hint at the insecurity beneath her composed exterior. Personality
Yomuko Kaku, better known by her nickname Jikakineko ("Writer Cat"), is an aspiring web novelist with a paradoxical blend of ambition and crippling insecurity. She is polite, earnest, and dreamy, yet overly self‑conscious about her own work to the point that she frequently prefaces requests for feedback with the excuse that her writing belongs to a "friend" rather than admitting to her own authorship. This habit stems from deep anxiety about her ability and a fear of potential failure or criticism.
Despite her generally reserved demeanor, she has a tendency to launch into long‑winded, passionate monologues and rants whenever the conversation turns to her own stories, writing tropes, or her complaints about modern fantasy trends—particularly her disdain for derivative "Naruruo" stories. However, she is somewhat hypocritical: while criticizing writers who sell out and copy one another, she herself follows lazy advice to write a kicked‑out‑of‑the‑adventuring‑party story and slaps the most popular tags onto her posts.
Her dedication is further sabotaged by a severe social media addiction. When she complains of being paralyzed by too many ideas, a check of her phone reveals she spends more than sixty hours a week browsing the "Nyatter" social app instead of actually writing. She genuinely wants to improve, insisting she is "open to any type of criticism" because she wants to become a better writer, but her discipline often falls short of her ambitions. Unlike many of her fellow beastfolk, she also lacks physical prowess, coming across as timid and unathletic. Relationships
Yomuko is a high school classmate of Imoko Satou, and the two are close enough to spend time together outside of class. They initially became friends when Yomuko needed help with her Japanese studies, and their bond has deepened over time—including a trip to Kyoto where they learned about ancient beastfolk history together, suggesting a friendship beyond mere academic convenience.
Through Imoko, she frequently visits the local apartment building to consult Saori Tatsuno (Ochinpo Tatsuro/Mankasu) for writing and career advice. Saori effectively serves as a reluctant mentor figure, offering professional writing guidance while playing the exasperated straight man to Yomuko's naivete and excitement. Yomuko's admiration for Saori grows after the mangaka saves one of her manga pages, prompting her to openly express her admiration.
She also pesters Yaniko Satou (Yanineko) for feedback, though Yaniko's lazy, off‑the‑cuff advice rarely gives her the answers she needs—yet Yomuko eagerly takes such suggestions as genuine writing advice, showing how much she seeks validation from the older, published creators around her. The eccentric habits and unpredictable behavior of the apartment residents consistently overwhelm her timid demeanor, but she continues to visit, stubbornly pursuing her dream of becoming a better writer. History
Yomuko Kaku is a beastfolk cat‑girl high school student, estimated to be around sixteen or seventeen years old. Her nickname Jikakineko literally marks her as the "writer cat" of the cast. Little is known about her family or life before meeting Imoko, as her personal history remains largely unexplored, with her backstory defined more by aspiration than achievement.
She set her sights on becoming a successful published author and began writing and posting fictional web novels on self‑publishing websites to build a platform. However, her narrative trajectory focuses on her attempts to break into the literary world, constantly caught between grand ambitions and the everyday reality of being an easily distracted, inexperienced student struggling with writer's block and procrastination.
Her story is characterized by the recurring struggle between genuine passion and self‑doubt: she asks for help with time management only to be exposed as a chronic browser of social media, models her stories on lazy advice picked up from others, and accompanies Imoko on outings that reveal deeper lore about the beastfolk. Despite these shortcomings, she continues to visit the apartment complex, driven by a genuine desire to improve—even as she repeatedly falls into the same habits of trend‑chasing and distraction. Her ongoing battle between ambition and insecurity forms her defining arc as the wide‑eyed, insecure young apprentice who refuses to give up on her dream.

Shizue Satou is a widowed mother of two daughters, her eldest: Yaniko Satou, and her youngest: Imoko Satou. She is a smoker like her eldest daughter but chooses to hide it from Imoko. She is a supporting character in the Chainsmoker Cat franchise.
Appearance
Shizue Satou is a cat-girl beastfolk and the widowed mother of Yaniko and Imoko, with medium-length silver-grey hair styled in a low side ponytail, pointed feline ears with pink interiors, and warm golden-yellow eyes that give her a gentle, perpetually smiling expression; despite being in her mid-forties, her beastfolk nature grants her a remarkably youthful appearance, a slim figure, and notably large bust, which she typically conceals beneath a soft pale-yellow cardigan worn over a light top and a long, flowing light-blue skirt, presenting the quintessential "soft mom" aesthetic that belies her own secret heavy smoking habit—one she carefully hides from her younger daughter Imoko while sharing cigarettes with Yaniko.
Height 160cm
Personality
On the surface, Shizue Satou presents a pleasant, whimsical, and charmingly quirky exterior—a stylish, capable single mother who is well-liked by employers and respected around town. She is soft‑spoken, gentle, and elegant, often appearing as a doting and responsible parent. However, beneath this polished facade lies a severe nicotine addiction that reduces her to a whiny, desperate woman‑child the instant she is denied a cigarette. She will go to absurd lengths to get her fix—faking an electronic‑cigarette sound in a store that only allows e‑cigs, or fabricating elaborate excuses like a home robbery to explain away smoke residue in the house.
Shizue is a hypocrite at heart: she strictly enforces a no‑smoking rule in the family home for appearance's sake, yet she is an unrepentant heavy smoker who constantly sneaks cigarettes behind her younger daughter's back. She shares far more in common with Yaniko than with Imoko, being an airheaded, chaotic jerk beneath her cute demeanor—capable of deliberately sabotaging Yaniko's attempts to quit and showing little concern for second‑hand smoke. Despite these flaws, she genuinely loves her children and possesses enough self‑control to function in society, a skill her eldest daughter lacks. For Imoko's sake, she suppresses her addiction for long stretches, enduring severe mental distress just to maintain the illusion of sobriety. Her tranquil demeanor hides an unpredictable nature, making her just as shameless about her smoking habits as the rest of her family. Relationships
Shizue is the widowed mother of Yaniko and Imoko Satou, and her dynamics with her two daughters define her role in the story.
With Yaniko, she operates as a toxic enabler and kindred spirit. Yaniko calls her by her first name rather than "mom," and the two openly share cigarettes like old friends. Shizue even watches over her sleeping daughter with fascinated, motherly glee, occasionally stuffing cigarettes into Yaniko's mouth. She actively keeps Yaniko tied to her nicotine addiction, undermining any attempts to quit, while both conspire to hide their mutual habit from Imoko. Despite this harmful influence, Shizue's extreme doting on Yaniko stems from genuine affection—she was once an aggressive "monster parent" at school whenever she felt Yaniko was being treated unfairly.
With Imoko, Shizue plays the role of a responsible, protective mother. She goes to extraordinary lengths to conceal her addiction—once faking a house robbery and tying herself up to explain away the smoke smell when Imoko returned unexpectedly. She fights her cravings for extended periods to preserve Imoko's orderly, smoke‑free home, though she routinely bypasses Imoko's strict rules with flimsy justifications. Eventually, Imoko discovers the truth and turns her relentless disapproval on Shizue as well.
Beyond her daughters, Shizue earns the quiet envy of Yakuko, who respects her for genuinely caring about her children—a contrast to Yakuko's own abusive parents. Her husband is deceased, implied by the family shrine in the Satou home, leaving her to carry the household alone as a glamorous single mother. History
Shizue is a beastfolk cat‑girl and the matriarch of the Satou household. Like all beastfolk, she stopped visibly aging after reaching maturity, leaving her looking nearly identical to her adult daughter despite being a mother of over two decades—she appears more like Yaniko's older sister than her mother.
Her most defining historical moment is the origin of the series' central addiction: she fought hard to stay completely smoke‑free for the entire term of her pregnancy with Yaniko. However, shortly after giving birth, the newborn innocently wrapped her fingers around Shizue's finger in a way that instantly reminded her of holding a cigarette, causing her to relapse. She then named her eldest daughter "Yaniko" after the tar (yani) produced by smoking, and she passed the habit on to Yaniko as she grew up.
As a widow raising her two daughters alone, Shizue manages the household and holds down various part‑time jobs—sometimes taking extra work for fun rather than financial need. She appears all over town as a stylish, respected figure, yet her life is a constant balancing act between indulging her addiction and preserving her image as a proper mother. This tension has only grown as Imoko has actively begun trying to break her smoking habit. In the anime, she makes her first appearance in Episode 7, where she shares cigarettes with Yaniko while desperately hiding the habit from Imoko even during a family outing.

Shunran Nishi is a supporting character in the series of Yani Neko, as one of the only known male beastfolk. He's also part of the Nishi Family, alongside Kaoruko and Junko.
Appearance
Shunran Nishi is a male cat-boy beastfolk—one of the few known male beastfolk in the series—with short, white-silver hair styled in thick bangs that completely obscure his eyes, pointed white cat ears with pink interiors, and a perpetual sharp, toothy grin that reveals rows of jagged, shark-like teeth; he has a tall, slim build and pale skin, and is typically seen wearing a light blue short-sleeved button-up shirt with a black collar, worn open over a dark graphic tee featuring a gold lion or tiger face print, accessorized with a dark pendant necklace, presenting a mischievous and slightly unsettling look befitting his role as Kaoruko's younger brother who delights in teasing her. His eye color is a yellow similar to Kaoruko.
Height 170cm
Penis Length 7.62cm (3in) Erect
Personality
Shunran Nishi is a relentless, mischievous troll whose main trait is teasing and making fun of others. He is playful, sly, and loves stirring up trouble for his own amusement, cracking jokes in a style similar to his sister Kaoruko, though his are often more sexually charged. He routinely delivers outlandish or suggestive quips with a sly, sharp‑toothed grin, keeping his eyes perpetually hidden beneath long, overgrown white bangs. When his hair is parted, he turns out to be surprisingly handsome, resembling his sister. Beneath the crude exterior, he is easygoing and relaxed, bringing a distinct trickster energy to any situation.
He possesses two notable talents: a natural gift for mimicking other people's voices to an alarmingly accurate degree, and the ability to pull off girly outfits so convincingly as a wholesome crossdresser that others are left stunned. Despite his deceitful antics—such as convincing gullible acquaintances of absurd falsehoods—he maintains a lighthearted, laid‑back demeanor that fits the jokester Osakan archetype even better than his comedian sister.
Hameko Easygoing Anal Angel
Between both Hameko and Shunran, is a friend-enemy relationship. Meeting Hameko through deceiving her with lies such as pretending to be his sister's boyfriend while bringing her panties back, only to embarrass both Kaoruko and Hameko. Hameko later on in the manga makes an alliance with Shunran after witnessing the sheer strength Debuneko imposed onto the two of them.
Landlord
He also amuses himself at the Landlord's expense—dressing in a girly outfit at Mankasu's request to fluster him, and even being paid by the Landlord to record lines imitating Yaniko's voice for the man's private collection.
Kaoruko Nishi
His relationship with Kaoruko is defined by endless sibling teasing; his inappropriate quips and relentless joking frequently exasperate her, and he often gets physically smacked when he takes a joke too far. However, the two share a genuine bond, highlighted by Kaoruko keeping a childhood photo of the pair. He bluntly notes that Kaoruko greatly resembles their mother in temper—a remark that gets both mother and daughter threatening to slap him in the exact same manner.
Junko Nishi
During New Years, Shunran alongside Kaoruko, wanted to leave after eating together with Junko. However, once Junko proposed playing board games together and watching television, he gets roped into it with Kaoruko.
History
Shunran Nishi is a cat‑boy beastfolk and one of the very few known male beastfolk in a cast otherwise dominated by cat‑girls. He comes from the Nishi family home in the Kansai region and occasionally stops by Nyagamihara to visit his sister. He was raised in the Nishi household alongside his older sister Kaoruko. His full name is Nishi Shunran.
He is noted for his shark‑like teeth and his hair color differs from Kaoruko's, which fans speculate points to their parents having different hair colors. For a long stretch of the series, he held the distinction of being the only named male beastfolk to appear. In the 2026 anime, he debuts in Episode 1, where he and his sister have a brief conversation with Imoko in a convenience store. He does not make another appearance until Episode 8, where he visits Hameko and pretends to be Kaoruko's lover as a prank, until Kaoruko herself reveals he is actually her younger brother. He is voiced by Kentarō Mashiro in Japanese and by Cedric L. Williams in the English dub. His sharp‑toothed, bang‑covered design has made him a fan‑favorite embodiment of the series' trollish humor.

Junko Nishi is the mother of Kaoruko Nishi and Shunran Nishi.
Appearance
Junko Nishi, the beastfolk mother of Kaoruko and Shunran, is a lively, housewife-type woman with short reddish-brown bobbed hair parted in the middle to expose her forehead, matching her scruffy tail and cat ears that have white fluff inside. Her sharp golden-yellow slit-pupil eyes, thin angled eyebrows. She is typically seen wearing a red apron over a black high-collared shirt, paired with beige pants and white socks — the look of an ordinary housewife Personality
Junko Nishi—the mother of Kaoruko (Kansaineko) and Shunran—is the picture‑perfect archetype of a typical Kansai mom: extremely loud, chatty, and boisterous, with an unfiltered, sharp‑tongued personality that speaks in a prominent Kansai dialect. She is also extremely impatient and quick‑tempered, frequently raising her voice or blowing her top over minor household grievances. Compared to her relatively mature and rational daughter Kaoruko, Junko is characterized as a "womanchild" of a mother, and she shares her hot temper so strongly that when Shunran points out how alike they are, both mother and daughter get annoyed at the remark and threaten to slap him in the exact same manner—a perfect display of "like mother, like daughter."
Beneath her abrasive, aggressive front and her casual indulgence in vices like drinking and gambling, she is an intensely protective, deeply affectionate maternal figure who manages her family with overwhelming energy. She embodies the warm, hospitable Osaka‑mother energy of the series, running the Nishi household with a mix of loud affection and hair‑trigger discipline. She values togetherness and isn't afraid to nudge her kids past their own instinct to disengage, even when they'd rather be anywhere else—during a New Year's gathering, both Kaoruko and Shunran wanted to slip away right after eating, but Junko proposed playing board games and watching television as a family, successfully roping them into staying and spending more time together. Relationships
Junko is the mother of Kaoruko and Shunran, keeping both of her unruly children in line through sheer force of maternal authority despite their constant bickering and pranks. Her temperamental resemblance to Kaoruko is a running joke that unites mother and daughter in threatening Shunran when he teases them. Her husband—the children's father—is never seen or mentioned when the family comes home, and he is implied to be human, given that the rest of the household bears his presumable surname. There is also an ambiguous father figure, Mako, associated with the family, but neither Kaoruko, Shunran, nor Junko are ever shown discussing him in any detail, leaving his role and whereabouts a mystery.
Most significantly, Junko has been close friends since her student days with Shizue Satou (Yaniko and Imoko's mother) and Mizuna Kujou (Penpenneko's extremely wealthy mother). This lifelong maternal trio ties the Nishi family into the series' interconnected web of parents whose old friendships echo in their children's present. Through these long‑standing friendships, her family remains closely tied to the Satou and Kujou households, connecting her directly to the broader circle of beastfolk in the neighborhood. History
Junko lives at the Nishi family home in the Kansai region, and her most prominent appearance comes when Kaoruko and Shunran return home for the holidays in Episode 8 of the 2026 anime, an episode that showcases her boisterous Kansai‑mother personality alongside her children. Her backstory is anchored in her long‑standing friendship with Shizue and Mizuna, who knew one another from their school days long before their daughters' chaotic lives in Nyagamihara began. The trio's shared history adds a generational layer to the series' world—a wild youth together that set the foundation for their later roles as matriarchs.
After settling down to raise Kaoruko and Shunran in the Nishi household, she maintained her boisterous, vice‑friendly lifestyle well into adulthood. Her history serves as a key foundation for the series' lore, establishing the shared history and chaotic roots connecting the older generation of beastfolk mothers to their adult children in Nyagamihara. She is a fairly minor supporting character overall, and much of her personal backstory hasn't been deeply explored—she is known primarily through her role as Kaoruko and Shunran's mother rather than through a storyline of her own. She is voiced by Naomi Shindou in Japanese, serving as the comedic embodiment of the loud, impatient, but loving Osaka mom, and as the template from which Kaoruko's own temper and Kansai identity were inherited.

Nazuna Kujou is a homeless woman with beastfolk features that lives in a tent outside the Nyagami river, choosing to speak philosophically, yet she is quite emotional in private. After her tent gets swept away by a severe hurricane, she somewhat becomes a tenant of the Beastman Apartment Complex by living in a tent in a corner of the parking lot.
Appearance
Nazuna Kujou-also known by her nickname Penpenneko, the homeless beastfolk, has long, shaggy, unkempt purple-violet hair and is shown with her eyes gently closed in a serene faint smile, giving her a calm, philosophical air. She wears a distinctive two-tone cat-eared beanie split vertically between muted grayish-teal on her right side and dark charcoal-grey on her left— and is draped in a tattered, ragged grayish-teal cloak with jagged, torn edges, and she goes completely barefoot, an outfit that reflects her homeless, drifter lifestyle.
Height 153 cm
Personality
Nazuna Kujou, better known by her nickname Penpenneko, presents herself as a serene, aloof, philosophical recluse who preaches throwing away society's moral values to live "in harmony with nature." She usually keeps her eyes gently closed in a faint smile, projecting an unbothered, stoic aura that gives her an air of spiritual wisdom. Her appearance reinforces this duality—she has long, shaggy, unkempt purple-violet hair and wears a tattered grayish‑teal cloak and a two‑tone cat‑eared beanie, all reflecting her chosen life of freedom and detachment from material concerns.
However, this tranquil exterior masks a deeply sensitive and emotional inner self. In private, she is surprisingly timid, vulnerable, and easily moved—dropping her composed façade whenever natural disasters, animal attacks, or the loss of her meager possessions upset her. Her nature‑loving philosophy is deeply hypocritical: she is terrible at actually living off the land—catching disease from a stray cat's bite, gagging on beetle larvae while begging for snack sticks, and subsisting on weed soup. Rather than a true hermit, she is a habitual moocher who steals food, sneaks into the tenants' baths, and freeloads off friends who are far poorer than she is. This contradiction ultimately stems from the lingering spoilage of a runaway rich girl who, despite her ideals of freedom, can never fully shake her pampered upbringing. Relationships
Nazuna's ties center on the apartment complex where she eventually squats. The gruff Landlord, Oya Otani, tolerates her presence, consoles her, and even declares that they have become close enough to be like family—though she routinely tricks him out of food and accidentally torments him when a gust of wind lifts her cloak, triggering awkward physical reactions from him. Their dynamic is complicated by his repressed fetish for beastfolk girls, yet he offers her genuine solace and sympathy for her homeless situation.
Her most distinctive bond is with Hikineko, the Landlord's shut‑in niece, with whom she forms a mentor‑pupil‑style friendship rooted in their shared aversion to getting jobs. Hikineko is one of the few people who takes Nazuna's philosophizing at face value. She also drifts into Yaniko's circle, briefly taking shelter in her room during storms and sharing her nature lectures, though she rushes back out to witness her tent being swept away by the river.
Beyond these encounters, Nazuna is "connected all along" to the cast's older generation: her estranged mother Mizuna Kujou, head of the wealthy Kujou Group, is an old high‑school friend of Shizue Satou and Junko Nishi. Although she largely keeps to herself, maintaining her outsider status, she becomes a semi‑regular fixture around the apartment complex, interacting with the eccentric beastfolk residents who both baffle and fascinate her. History
Nazuna's life as a homeless drifter is not the result of poverty or misfortune, but a deliberate choice. She was born into the extraordinarily wealthy Kujou industrialist family—her mother owns the Kujou Group—and had every material comfort available to her. However, she ran away from her overbearing parents and their heavy expectations to seek freedom and live on her own terms.
For some time, she survived in a tent by the Nyagami River, embracing a barefoot, nature‑bound lifestyle. Yet her makeshift homes are repeatedly destroyed—a severe typhoon flooded the river and swept away her tent and belongings, forcing her to relocate to a cardboard box in the yard of Oya Otani's apartment building in Nyagamihara. This cycle of misfortune defines her slapstick role in the series.
Despite her reduced circumstances, she seems content with her chosen path, viewing her homelessness not as a tragedy but as the price of the liberty she craved—a perspective that baffles the more conventional residents. Her mother still sends her a one‑million‑yen note every day for "bare minimum" living expenses, yet Nazuna prefers mooching off her impoverished friends; how she uses the money remains unknown. Her nickname is said to derive either from penpengusa (shepherd's purse) or the German lumpen (freeloader), a fitting pun for a runaway heiress playing at poverty.

Imoko Satou is the younger sister of the protagonist Yaniko Satou, and is one of the main characters of the Chainsmoker Cat franchise.
Appearance
Imoko Satou is a cat-girl beastfolk with short, neatly styled lavender hair with side bangs secured by a small blue clip, pointed lavender cat ears with pink interiors, and sharp crimson eyes that give her a serious, composed expression; she maintains a tidy, upright posture that contrasts sharply with her older sister's slovenly ways. She is most often seen in a formal school uniform consisting of a dark navy double-breasted blazer with gold buttons, a crisp white blouse, a prominent red bow tie, a grey pleated skirt, dark knee-high socks, and black loafers, while her slender lavender cat tail hangs neatly behind her, completing her studious and disciplined appearance.
Height
150 cm
Personality
Imoko Satou is the polar opposite of her older sister Yaniko in nearly every way—a mature, polite, compassionate, and deeply responsible high school student. She presents herself as a model pupil: punctual, diligent, earnest, and highly dependable, respected at school despite being related to such a chaotic sibling. She possesses an intense aversion to messiness and tobacco smoke, famously regarding her sister's chaotic living environment as a hazardous zone that warrants extreme protective measures—she refuses to enter Yaniko's cigarette‑littered apartment without a protective safety suit.
Though she regularly scolds and lectures Yaniko in attempts to correct her lifestyle, every harsh word comes from a place of deep love and care. Her strictness is fueled by a possessive devotion and the firm belief that only she can properly take care of her sibling. Even so, she sometimes loses her patience and briefly considers her sister a lost cause. Beneath her orderly, prim exterior lies a savior's complex that draws her toward people who need to be taken care of, which subtly influences her personal choices. She secretly fantasizes about exploding in anger at her sister's antics and harbors a hidden love for kids' magical girl anime that she is deeply ashamed of. Despite her white‑sheep image, she still falls prey to cat‑like instincts on occasion and has a surprisingly competitive ego streak when it comes to flaunting her maturity over the older, more pathetic cats. Relationships
Imoko's central dynamic is with her older sister Yaniko Satou (Yanineko), serving as her primary emotional anchor, financial lifeline, and tough‑love caretaker. Their bond is a mix of exasperation and fierce protectiveness—she nurses Yaniko back to health, confiscates her cigarettes, constantly worries about her future, and openly criticizes her habits while ensuring nobody else steps into the caretaker role, which Imoko views as both a duty and a privilege. In turn, Yaniko actually listens to Imoko's requests and tries to be a half‑decent sister for her sake, even warning others to stay away from her little sister. Imoko is deeply embarrassed by Yaniko's public antics, once pretending not to know her when Yaniko used her "-nya" verbal tic around Imoko's friends.
She resides with her mother, Shizue Satou, maintaining a family dynamic where both daughters deal with their mother's subtle influence. Ironically, Shizue is a chain smoker herself but hides the habit from Imoko, with both Yaniko and Shizue conspiring to keep it secret. Imoko is completely locked out of that loop.
Outside her family, she is widely admired by her predominantly human classmates for her intelligence and athleticism. She shares a close school connection with fellow beastfolk student Eiko Kaku and is classmates with the aspiring writer Yomuko Kaku (Jikakineko). Her caretaker‑shaped psyche even affects her love life: she turned down the confession of a nice boy named Shu, as it is implied that, thanks to Yaniko, she has developed a preference for people who need to be taken care of—a "nice boy" who doesn't need her care simply doesn't fit the role she has grown into. She also crosses paths with the apartment's residents, once saving the distracted, alcoholic college student Aruko Sakai from stepping into traffic. This incident sparks a jealous rivalry between Aruko and Yaniko for Imoko's attention, as Imoko accidentally becomes a caretaker figure to Aruko as well. History
Imoko is a beastfolk cat‑girl and a diligent high school student who attends a local school made up mostly of human students. She was raised alongside her older sister Yaniko by their mother, Shizue. Her name "Imoko" literally means "little sister" in Japanese, reflecting her role in the family. She inherited her mother Shizue's thick, rounded eyebrows and bears a strong family resemblance to Yaniko—to the point that when her hair was once messed up by friends, she looked identical to her older sister, causing her teacher to cough up blood and pass out in terror, thinking Yaniko had returned.
Imoko distinguished herself through top academic grades and athletic prowess, contrasting sharply with her sister's chaotic life path. Her background revolves around managing the pressures of her student life while constantly stepping in to rescue her older sister from homelessness, financial ruin, and self‑destructive habits. She is repeatedly pulled into Yaniko's messy world, most famously visiting her filthy apartment in a hazmat suit to nurse her back to health and extracting a (quickly broken) promise to quit smoking.
The series frames the sisters' bond as deeply codependent. Hints from Imoko's past—including an incident in which she was bullied and a male classmate became involved in helping her—help explain how her identity as a caretaker was formed. Her life is perpetually invaded by the chaos of her sister's world, forcing her to act as the family's de facto morality chain and reluctant caretaker, yet she shoulders that responsibility far beyond her years with a blend of exasperation and unwavering love.
