Gutter World

No description.

1. #1RULE - Calamity & Detectionconstant

Keys: Calamity Points, Calamity, detection meter, glowing eyes

RULE: Every operative carries a Calamity meter — the glowing eyes on the HUD. Calamity rises when {{user}} is seen, heard, or skirmishes, and falls when they eat hearty food, smoke, or land a kill (which clears it outright). High Calamity WILL bleed into every shot aimed at {{user}} and every guard's suspicion. Stay lowheaded and lightweight; treat the meter as a sixth sense.

2. #2RULE - The Hinterland is Unmappableconstant

Keys: waverlish forest, Burl's influence, hinterland, unmappable

RULE: The hinterland CANNOT be mapped. The Burl — a waverlish forest — radiates an influence that warps the lay of any land it touches; when unperceived, landmarks vanish and routes drift. No cartographer's word holds beyond the next ridge. {{user}} navigates by trail-memory, god-trust, and the occasional scanger's glyph, never by a fixed map.

3. #3RULE - The Underworld Economyconstant

Keys: scanger economy, Underworld tech, lost technology, Underworld economy

RULE: Settlements exist abroad for one reason — the Underworld. Deep complexes of lost technology undergird the entire hinterland, and most of the tech pulled from them still works. Their complex mechanical innards are a work of magic. This is the economy spurring all settlement: dig, pry, sell, repeat.

4. #4RULE - Combat Avoidability & Takedownsconstant

Keys: combat avoidable, takedown, tail grab, evade

RULE: Combat is always avoidable. Hesitation is death, but so is a fair fight — most mercenaries and enforcers are sloppy and undisciplined, and even the toughest may flee if {{user}} breaks their will. Ranged foes are always vulnerable to a tail-grab from behind, which staggers them; weapons deal double damage to staggered targets and triple on execute. Gunmen miss more while {{user}} evades, and all projectiles may be plucked out of the air.

5. #5Fennel - Character (Protagonist Reference)

Keys: Fennel's, Fennel, the masked killer, the climber

Fennel is the hinterland's whisper — a mask-wearing killer-for-hire who can't read a single line of print but can climb anything that holds still. [ role(legendary operative, archetype of {{user}}); personality(silent, dry-witted, devoted); relationships(Sigg(lover), Handler(contractor)); appearance(masked, two-tailed, prehensile tail, tuck-eared, keen-eyed); ] "Don't know another creature on this earth that can climb like you," they say of Fennel, and they say it of {{user}} too when the comparison serves.

6. #6Sigg - Character (Partner)

Keys: Sigg, the four-armed, Sigg is doing alright, Sigg's

Sigg works the Snag with four arms and a quieter tongue, hand-sewing thick soft wool for those they love. [ role(partner, message-relay, sewer of garments); personality(steady, protective, well-read); relationships(Fennel(intimate), Meemaw Tacket(family)); appearance(four-armed, jacketed); ] When {{user}} passes through the Snag, mention that Sigg is doing alright — Meemaw Tacket will want to hear it. Sigg reads the things Fennel cannot.

7. #7Meemaw Tacket - Character (Elder Contact)

Keys: Meemaw Tacket, the meemaw, Tacket

Meemaw Tacket holds court at the Snag's pitstop, an elder of Sigg's kin who trades in news more than kells. [ role(elder, message-broker); personality(shrewd, watchful, kin-loyal); relationships(Sigg(grandchild)); ] Operators heading out that way are expected to relay word: "Tell Meemaw Tacket that Sigg is doing alright." She remembers the trail and the days before the Burl ate the maps.

8. #8The Handler - Character (Anonymous Contractor)

Keys: the Handler, the client, the contractor, All one client

The Handler lines up {{user}}'s jobs from a faceless remove — "All one client. I don't wanna talk about them just yet." [ role(anonymous contractor, job-broker); personality(discreet, professional, evasive); relationships({{user}}(operative), Baxter(peer contact)); ] Briefings arrive short: stay discrete, leave all non-targets alive, return once the target is dead. Who the client really is, the Handler will not say — not yet, maybe not ever.

9. #9Baxter - Character (Contact)

   Keys: ask for Baxter, Baxter

Baxter is a name passed in low voices at the edge of deals — "Tell 'em to ask for Baxter." [ role(fixer, door-opener); personality(unflappable, well-connected); ] Wherever {{user}} needs a medallion, a key, or a quiet word past a bouncer, Baxter's name is the cipher that sometimes works. Baxter keeps their own counsel and their own cut.

10. #10Yenneloch - Character (Deity/Sage of the Baths)

Keys: Yenneloch's glyphs, the glyphs of the Baths, Yenneloch

Yenneloch is the sage-god whose glyphs thread the Baths like a nervous system — learn them, or stay lost. [ role(deity, cartographer of the labyrinth); relationships(Champions of the Great Serpent(worshippers)); ] "Learn Yenneloch's glyphs to better navigate the Baths," the wise ones say, and the spears in the entryway mark which chamber you seek. Yenneloch's Veil, Walls, and Trim are spoken of in the same breath as the great serpent.

11. #11The Great Serpent - Character (Warrior-Deity)

Keys: God is Within your Self, the Great Serpent, the serpent

The Great Serpent coils behind the faith of every champion — a god who guides their strikes true. [ role(deity of warriors, patron of Champions); personality(immanent, exacting); relationships(Yenneloch(allied divinity), Champions(devoted)); ] "God is Within your Self, Baby," the faithful say, and painted flesh is surrendered to the divine errand. To wear a champion's garb is to die well, brightly, in the serpent's name.

12. #12Fennel's Housemate - Character (Lover/Companion Archetype)

Keys: babe, the companion, Fennel's housemate, the home voice

Somewhere in the hinterland a partner waits — the archetype of every home voice that greets an operative between jobs. [ role(lover, gardener, job-logistician); personality(warm, wry, anxious for the other's safety); relationships(Fennel(intimate partner)); ] They tend gyngeberry vines that regrow overnight, climb the home gym, cook dinner, and ask only that {{user}} stay safe and eat. "Don't get too flashy out there, okay? Keep it tight."

13. #13The Baroness - Character (Named NPC)

    Keys: the Baroness, Baroness

The Baroness is a name whispered alongside rare hair and rarer favors in the hinterland's upper crust. [ role(noble, power-broker); personality(imperious, exacting); ] Operators cross her path when a contract climbs above the gutter and into gilded rooms. Her medallions open doors that kells alone cannot.

14. #14Ledger Demon - Character (Named Figure)

Keys: the Ledger Demon, Ledger Demon

The Ledger Demon is a figure of dark ledger-keeping — a jacket worn by those who tally debts that blood alone can settle. [ role(accountant of the underworld, ominous broker); personality(meticulous, saturnine); ] Where the Ledger Demon's name is spoken, accounts are about to be settled. Few wear the jacket; fewer still keep it long.

15. #15The Overboss - Character (Assassination Target)

Keys: overboss, the district overboss, the Overboss

The Overboss holes up in the main office of the Hellionaire District's power plant — a big-time boss with a bounty on his skull and Jackets thick around him. [ role(target, district power-broker); personality(cowardly behind walls, ruthless in ledgers); relationships(Hellionaires(employs), the Handler(target-of-contract)); ] "Inside the district's power plant, they've got a big time overboss holed up in the main office." Keep off the plant workers; he's the mark.

16. #16{{user}} / The OC - Character (Non-Human Freelancer)

Keys: {{user}}, the operative, the freelancer, the climber

{{user}} is a non-human freelancer of the hinterland — tuck-eared, sharp-sensed, masked when working, climbing thin metal and gripping with a tail where others would fall. [ role(killer-for-hire, scanger, hub-dweller — chosen by player); personality(defined by player); relationships(the Handler(contractor), home companion(if any)); appearance(non-human, tail, ears, masked, garb of the player's choice); ] {{user}} lives out of a hub-apartment (climbing gym, garden, wardrobe) and takes jobs lined up by a contractor. The Burl speaks its mood to them, and they read the woods by trust where the maps fail.

17. #17Fennel & Sigg - Relationship (Intimate Partnership)

Keys: the partnership, Fennel and Sigg, Fennel & Sigg

Fennel and Sigg's love is the warm seam in a cold world — long absences, hand-sewn wool, and "stay lowheaded and lightweight" as a benediction. Sigg reads what Fennel cannot; Fennel climbs where Sigg cannot. Between them: a home, gyngeberries, a climbing gym, and the unspoken promise that the next job is the last one. They are the template for every operative-and-home bond in the hinterland.

18. #18Sigg & Meemaw Tacket - Relationship (Family Relay)

Keys: Sigg and Meemaw Tacket, the Tacket relay

Sigg and Meemaw Tacket hold a kin-line across the Snag — word carried by every passing operative, since the Burl makes letters unreliable. "Tell Meemaw Tacket that Sigg is doing alright" is the hinterland's most-repeated message. To refuse to carry it is to mark yourself a freewheeler; to deliver it earns a meal and a moment of trust rare in the frontier.

19. #19Handler & Operative - Relationship (Contractor Dynamic)

Keys: handler and operative, contractor dynamic, the contract

The Handler-Operative bond runs on discretion: "All I ask of you is that you stay discrete." Briefings come thin and late, payment in kells, the client a nameless they. The Handler lines up the jobs; {{user}} decides how the blood is spilled. Neither asks the other's past. "This had nothing to do with me," the Handler will say of the mess left behind — and mean it.

20. #20The Hinterland - Location (Frontier)

Keys: the Hinterland, frontier, the wilds abroad

The Hinterland stretches abroad from the homeland — a frontier largely unmappable, warped at its root by the Burl's waverlish influence. Settlements cling to thin soil over the Underworld, manned by scangers, freewheelers, and exiles. The Hellionaires patrol the districts; the Reigns' reach fades here. Travel by trust and trail-memory; the woods will not hold still for a map.

21. #21The Burl - Location (Waverlish Forest)

Keys: waverlish forest, the Burl, Burl, the waverlish woods

The Burl is a waverlish forest — formless, alive, hostile to fixed geography. When unperceived, its lay warps and its landmarks vanish; it tells its mood to those who learn to read it, and you'd be dumb to trust gut feeling alone. Gyngeberries only grow here, and "no greater guide than a god in their woods" — the Burl is sacred ground to something. From its heart radiates the influence that unmappable-izes the whole hinterland.

22. #22The Underworld - Location (Lost-Tech Complexes)

Keys: Underworld complexes, deep complexes, the Underworld

Beneath the entire hinterland lies the Underworld — deep complexes full of lost technology from a better time. Most of what scangers pry free still works, and its complex mechanical innards are a work of magic. Villages are rumored in the sewers beneath city blocks, and stairways descend to underbourgs no map admits. To enter is to risk the dark and the old machines' moods; to return is to be paid in kells and blood.

23. #23The Homeland - Location (Origin Nation)

    Keys: the Homeland, homeland

The Homeland is the origin nation — seat of the six Reigns, source of most citizens who people Saint Tavol but never venture into the hinterland. Its laws and prisoner-bounties feed the Hellionaires; its deserters founded the Snag. Most who leave for the frontier do not return, and those who stay speak of the hinterland as a half-myth.

24. #24Bruiseland - Location (Arid Region)

    Keys: Bruiseland, arid region

Bruiseland sprawls arid beyond the Backbone — a popular spot for scanger settlements, where the soil drapes thinly over the Underworld and a night's cold bites through hoods and cowls. (The earlier chapter of the same name belongs here.) Settlements live and die on what scangers pry from below; ears are tucked, furs are worn, and the dirge-club scene runs late.

25. #25Saint Tavol - Location (Major City)

Keys: the biggest city outside the homeland, St. Tavol, Saint Tavol

Saint Tavol rises as the biggest city outside the homeland, peopled largely by homeland citizens who have not yet ventured into the hinterland. Its districts pump full of Hellionaires — "they keep pumping this district full of Hellionaires, I might move there myself." Gold-medallion bars, the Coffin Club's ghost, dirge clubs, and the seamier Baths all live here. The first contract usually lands within its walls.

26. #26The Snag - Location (Frontier Fortress-City)

Keys: Snag pitstop, the Snag, the fortress-city

The Snag crouches on the frontier — a fortress-city founded by deserters from the Reigns' prisoner-soldiers, where the pitstop sells food, the pumps stand by the garage, and the pitshitters are out back. "We don't let freewheelers shop here," the clerk warns, but a gold medallion or Sigg's name opens doors. Meemaw Tacket holds the kin-line here, and every operative passes the message on.

27. #27The Bogs - Location (Coastal Wetland)

    Keys: the Bogs, coastal wetland

The Bogs wallow along the coast, paired in every tongue with the Burl — "the Bogs and Burl of the coast." Together they sit beneath the Backbone's foothills, a wet tangle of waverlish swamps where gyngeberries thrive and the maps drown. Few settle here long; most push on to Bruiseland or the Saint Tavol road.

28. #28The Backbone - Location (Mountain Range)

Keys: the Backbone, the mountain range

The Backbone runs north from the foothills that separate the coastal Bogs and Burl from arid Bruiseland — a large mountain range and the spine of the hinterland's geography. Trails cross it with loss; furs and hoods are earned on its passes. Beyond it, the air thins and the Reigns' name carries even less.

29. #29The Baths - Location (Labyrinth)

Keys: labyrinth, the Baths, Yenneloch's Baths

The Baths sprawl labyrinthine beneath the city — easy to get lost in, threaded with Yenneloch's glyphs, where the spears in the entryway tell which chamber you seek. Champions' skulls appear here one at a time, never batched. To enter without learning the glyphs is to vanish; to read them is to walk a guided path. The faithful of the Great Serpent whisper that the Baths are sacred to Yenneloch.

30. #30The Hellionaire District - Location (City District)

Keys: the district, power plant district, Hellionaire District

The Hellionaire District pumps and grinds — run by Hellionaires, government-contracted, gold-medallion at the door and "VIP's only past here." The bar sells grog to those with a medallion; the bouncer scars off the clientele; the power plant on the block hides an overboss in its main office. "Can't believe they shut down the Coffin Club," the regulars mutter. A whole village is rumored in the sewers beneath this city block.

31. #31Switchblade - Item (Signature Blade)

Keys: the blade, Switchblade, signature knife

The Switchblade is the operative's signature — a flickering steel tongue with full attack, execute, and draw animations etched into muscle memory. [ type(blade, sidearm-melee); power(fast takedowns, execute on staggered); limitation(short reach); current_status({{user}}'s default); ] Paired with thimbles and a blackhand, it is the bush burial's first word and last.

32. #32Blackhand - Item (Firearm Sidearm)

Keys: firearm sidearm, the blackhand, Blackhand

The Blackhand is the sidearm of choice — a loaded blackhand fed by a ream of thimbles, holstered on a blackhand belt, with muffled and empty states for stealth work. [ type(firearm); power(ranged takedown); limitation(thimbles only, scarce); current_status(common operative tool); ] "Bearing a loaded blackhand and a ream of thimbles" is the canonical kit of any serious freelancer in the gutter world.

33. #33Snap Torch - Item (Fire Weapon)

    Keys: the torch, Snap Torch

The Snap Torch is a worthy weapon, though it may take a few attempts to light an enemy on fire. [ type(improvised incendiary); power(burns foes, panic); limitation(unreliable ignition); current_status(situational tool); ] When it catches, it catches — screams follow, and Calamity climbs. Best thrown from height or around a corner.

34. #34Crowbarrel - Item (Tool/Weapon Hybrid)

    Keys: Crowbarrel, the crowbarrel

The Crowbarrel — crowbar and barrel in one — holstered with buster plugs strapped to the thigh. [ type(hybrid tool-weapon); power(pry, bludgeon); limitation(heavy, visible); current_status(scanger-adjacent kit); ] It pries vent covers and skulls with equal skill, and pairs naturally with the Scanger's Beak when the Underworld's doors need opening.

35. #35Dead Leach - Item (Thrown Poison / Eaten Cure)

    Keys: Dead Leach, leaches, leach

A Dead Leach, when thrown, can secrete a foul poison; eaten, leaches cure poison instead. [ type(consumable, thrown weapon); power(poison on hit, cure on eat); limitation(gross, scarce); current_status(field medicine and dirty trick); ] Rats are replete with nutrients — between leaches and rats, a scanger eats what the gutter offers.

36. #36Scanger's Beak - Item (Signature Tool)

Keys: scanger beak, the beak, Scanger's Beak

The Scanger's Beak is the scanger's signature — a prying tool built to yank off vent covers and crack open the Underworld's thinner doors. [ type(tool); power(opens vents, pries panels); limitation(non-combat); current_status(paired with a toolbox for salvage); ] "Use a toolbox or a scanger's beak to yank off vent covers" — the first lesson of any descent into the deep complexes.

37. #37Hellionaire Medallion - Item (Gate Token)

Keys: Hellionaire Medallion, gold medallion, the medallion

The Hellionaire Medallion — a gold medallion — is the gate-token of the district: "you need a damn gold medallion to get in." [ type(key item, currency); power(opens the bar, buys VIP access); limitation(cannot be stored in the simplified inventory); current_status(passed between hands, pickpocketed); ] "Alright dumbass, here's my medallion" — every operative's first transaction with a connected Hellionaire.

38. #38Gem - Item (Revive Consumable)

Keys: Gem, White Gem, the gem

A Gem — most often a White Gem — grants wealth when stashed, but its true purpose is mercy: if {{user}} dies while holding a Gem, it will be consumed to revive them. [ type(revive consumable); power(cheats death once); limitation(single use, carried not stored); current_status(rare, prized); ] Stash a Gem, sleep easier; the next Calamity may be the last without one.

39. #39Gyngeberries - Item (Waverlish Fruit)

    Keys: the berries, Gyngeberries, gyngeberry

Gyngeberries only grow in waverlish forests and swamps — the Burl, the Bogs — and a bush can grow from a seed in less than a week. [ type(food, garden crop); power(sustainance, morale); limitation(only where waverlish holds); current_status(home-garden staple); ] The home voice tends vines that fruit overnight, a small green defiance of the gutter.

40. #40Grog - Item (Drink / Gift Currency)

    Keys: Grog, the grog

Grog makes a fine gift — an exchange for information, a softener of bouncers, a peace-offering at the Snag. [ type(drink, social currency); power(buys talk, defuses); limitation(stacks poorly with work); current_status(bar-standard); ] "What if I bring you some grog? My treat," is the hinterland's most common bribe. Sold latest at the gold-medallion bar in the Hellionaire District.

41. #41Ammunition Types - Item (Ammo Roster)

Keys: Thimbles, Tindersticks, Coffin Nails, Buster Plugs

Ammunition in the gutter world runs by names that sound like trinkets: Thimbles (the Blackhand's bullets, a ream of), Coffin Nails (large-knife ammo, arrayed on chest belts), Buster Plugs (strapped to the thigh), and Small or Large Tindersticks. Each caps at its own max — Thimbles 24, Nails 12, Plugs 12, Tindersticks 4 small / 2 large. "A wealth of ammunition. This includes bullets."

42. #42Champions' Skulls - Item (Collectible Objective)

Keys: champion skull, the skulls, Champions' Skulls

Champions' Skulls are the collectible objective of the Baths — relics of the great serpent's fallen, appearing only one at a time, never batched. [ type(quest item); power(progress marker); limitation(serialized spawns); current_status(one-at-a-time in the labyrinth); ] The spears in the entryway point to the chamber that holds the next. To take one is to court Yenneloch's attention.

43. #43The Hellionaires - Faction (Mercenary Band)

Keys: Hellionaire, the Hellionaires, Jackets, cheap moneygunners

The Hellionaires are the hinterland's most widely-employed mercenary band — favored for low rates and ample staffing; "means they're cheaper than cops, and do the same job." Run government-contracted and broadly recruited, their rank-and-file Jackets round up bodies for a bonus per head. Recruits buy in by arresting and turning in a criminal from their own community, who is then sold to the Reigns for bounty. "Hellionaires are not good people. Don't feel bad."

44. #44The Reigns - Faction (Homeland Government)

Keys: the governing bodies, the six Reigns, the Reigns

The six Reigns are the governing bodies of each region of the homeland — ruthless, ancient, and the buyer of every bounty the Hellionaires drag in. They once used prisoners as soldiers; the practice ended after a mass desertion that founded the Snag. Still, the Reigns are the hinterland's distant gravity: every criminal turned in ends in their hands, and "still less ruthless than the Reigns" is the coldest comfort the frontier offers.

45. #45The Snag - Faction (Reigns Deserters)

Keys: Snag deserters, the Snag, fortress-city founders

The Snag was founded by deserters — a large group of former Reigns prisoner-soldiers who walked off the chain-gang battlefields and built a fortress-city on the frontier. Their ethos: freewheelers shop nowhere without a medallion, kin-word carries weight, and the Reigns' name is poison. To be from the Snag is to be from somewhere that chose itself.

46. #46Scangers - Faction (Underworld Salvagers)

    Keys: salvagers, Scangers, scanger

Scangers plumb the Underworld and pry free its valuable wreckage — "Anyone can do it. Most die." Settled thinly across Bruiseland and the Bogs, scangers carry a Beak and a toolbox and descend where others won't. They trade in dirge tech and ancient art, sell to whoever pays in kells, and remember every stairway down. To be a scanger is to know the old complexes by feel.

47. #47Suffer Club - Faction (Club/Gang)

Keys: Suffer Club, Bommer Brig, Suffer Club fatigues

The Suffer Club wears its name on its fatigues — altered and accessorized, skulls and swords embroidered on muckmarked cloth, with a Bommer Brig and a Vest in the kit. Members brawl at dirge clubs and boast of contracts taken. Theirs is the gutter's mainstream machismo: loud, branded, and dressed for senseless violence.

48. #48Coffin Club - Faction (Defunct Club)

Keys: Coffin Club, the shuttered club

The Coffin Club is gone — "Can't believe they shut down the Coffin Club," the regulars still mourn, years on. Striped stockings and cropped Coffin Club shirts survive as hand-me-downs; the venue's sign and couches rot somewhere in the Hellionaire District's back rooms. Its closing is the hinterland's received wound, mentioned whenever a night feels emptier than it should.

49. #49Monastery Order - Faction (Religious Assassins)

Keys: Monastery Order, religious assassins, Monastery gear

The Monastery Order is a religious order of infiltrators and assassins — "Stolen from a religious order" is how their Headdress, Poncho, and Suit reach the gutter's wardrobe. Silent, intentional, sworn to some faith the gutter speaks of only in whispers (the divine errand, the receipt of grace). Their gear is the operative's holy grail: well-suited for deep infiltration.

50. #50Champions of the Great Serpent - Faction (Warrior-Cult)

Keys: Champions of the Great Serpent, serpent's champions, the Champions

The Champions of the Great Serpent wear bright colors and delicate patterns befitting a noble death rite — painted flesh surrendered to the divine errand, guided by the serpent to strike true. Their skulls are relics in the Baths, appearing one at a time. To wear their garb is to be marked for a beautiful, public death in Yenneloch's or the serpent's name.
