For other uses of the name "Umbrella", see Umbrella (disambiguation). For private military company, see Blue Umbrella. The Umbrella Corporation is a multinational conglomerate with subsidiaries active in a variety of industries from the 1980s to the early 2000s. Umbrella had influence in the production and sale of cosmetics, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, industrial machine production, consumer products, health foods, the transportation industry and tourism. Umbrella's large array of subsidiaries was typical for large-scale corporations, though it was purposely built to cover up illegal activities.

Project W, or the Wesker Plan, was a eugenics project pioneered by Oswell E. Spencer which intended to develop an advanced race of human beings. The project was named after the first director of the project, Dr. Wesker and all successful child candidates are renamed with this surname. This was one of the most significant viral operations centering around the Progenitor virus. This project was also highly classified to the extent that it was not even included among the Umbrella Archives or in the U.M.F.-013 computer core.

Dr. Oswell E. Spencer, Earl Spencer is an aristocratic British billionaire, virologist and eugenicist. One of the founders of Umbrella Pharmaceuticals, Lord Spencer is the CEO and President for its entire existence, which saw its expansion as the Umbrella Corporation over the 1980s.

A cold, ruthless elitist and ambitious individual, Spencer mercilessly eliminated his rivals and gradually increased his power within the company, which he strictly controlled behind a veil of darkness. Spencer has a vision to remake the world and lead it into a new era, seeing the world's current state as self-destructive. He intended to use the research data accumulated from Bio Organic Weapons to carry his vision out and mould a utopia for mankind with himself as its ruler.

Bio Organic Weapons (B.O.W. for short) are genetically-altered organisms created with the intent of either being used as military and paramilitary weapons, or were created to further research into military and paramilitary weapons. This definition is rigid, and so does not include mutants created due to outbreaks, who are termed "Irregular Mutants".

   Keys: Progenitor Virus

   Entry settings

The Progenitor virus is a family of RNA viruses. Progenitor is immensely ancient and is suspected of being hundreds of millions, if not billions of years old. It is considered to have both aided and hindered the evolution of Earth's ecology through the extremities of its resulting mutations.

While otherwise behaving as a typical Group VI virus in the Baltimore classification, Progenitor is distinct from all other viruses by being able to reverse lysis in cells and revive organisms dead for considerable lengths of time. Whereas other retroviruses, such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus, target particular cells of a particular animal's body, Progenitor is capable of infecting the cells of any organism, whether animal, fungal, plant, or bacterial.

Considerable research on Progenitor has been undertaken since its discovery in the late 1960s, and a number of engineered strains have since come into existence primarily for bioweapons research.

The U.M.F.-013 was an Umbrella computer core containing the Umbrella Archives and data on their experiments, in which it also contained the A.I. "Red Queen" and her counterpart "White Queen". Sometime later, Sergei reinstalled this computer system at the Caucasus laboratory.

In 2003, Albert Wesker, after having a battle with a mutated Sergei, downloaded all of the U.M.F.s data and formatted the U.M.F., wiping out the entire data on the computer itself.

   Entry settings

The Special Tactics and Rescue Service is an American elite special forces division under the jurisdiction of the Raccoon Police Department, though privately funded and able to operate independently. It employed ex-military personnel and academic experts for appropriate positions within the police department. The overall idea was to form a team combining tactically-sound soldiers with scientists, allowing the team to operate in both anti-terrorism and increasingly-potent urban crime scenarios, as well as dealing with other emergencies.

   Keys: Prototype Virus

   Enabled · Before character · Order 100 · 100%

   Entry settings

The Prototype strain was developed for use in "Project W," advanced by Umbrella founder Oswell E. Spencer as part of a special screening process for identifying the most genetically gifted of the Wesker children. Only two of the thirteen remaining test subjects survived: Albert Wesker and Alex Wesker. They survived largely due to special genetic markers.

Albert had injected the virus on July 24, 1998, during the Mansion Incident. William Birkin had given him the virus. This allowed him to survive impalement from the T-002 and to escape the Spencer Mansion before the Triggering System had detonated, unbeknownst to Umbrella and the remaining S.T.A.R.S. members. The power gained from the virus allowed Albert to become a global threat.

Alex had injected the virus sometime after contracting an illness. She had survived the infection but lacked certain unique physical benefits that Albert had possessed. Alex had attempted to commit suicide in 2011 during the Sejm Island incident, but had only entered a dormant state due to the virus and awoke in a body mutated by her own T-Phobos Virus.

   Entry settings

Tyrant Virus, also known as the T-Virus, is the general name given to a series of mutant Progenitor virus strains.

Initially developed by Umbrella Pharmaceuticals in the late 1960s, the primary goal of the "t-Virus Project" was to effectively eliminate the need for a large-scale conventional army and generate revenue for their eugenics program, the Wesker Project. This required two things: the virus had to be highly contagious to the point of infecting an entire target population and guarantee a 100% mortality rate.[1][2] However, such a virus was deemed impossible due to the tendency of highly contagious diseases to kill too many people at once and prevent further spread.

By 1978, the development focus shifted from creating a lethal, highly contagious virus to one that would mutate hosts to become physically stronger and remain alive despite organ failures and severe brain damage. The latter led to murderous aggression and an obsessive hunger that drove individuals to cannibalism. Additionally, with the discovery in 1981 that approximately 10% of any population was naturally immune or unmutated asymptomatic carriers, Phase 2 of the research project aimed at finding workarounds. While an improved t-Virus with 0% immunity was being developed, the Arklay Laboratory team, led by Dr. William Birkin, engineered a new species of animal that could hunt down and kill survivors. This effort began with the creation of simple Bio-Organic Weapons such as the Web Spinner and progressed with the development of the genetically chimeric Hunter α.

The Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance (BSAA) is an international counter-terrorism organisation sanctioned by the United Nations. It was formed during the War on Terror as a means of more readily combating the rising use of biological weaponry since the collapse of Umbrella Pharmaceuticals. Originally founded by the Federation of Pharmaceutical Companies as a private paramilitary agency, the UN allowed its continued private funding as late as 2009, understanding that footing the bill on terrorism-affected countries was counterproductive.
