Description on Chubfrom Chub
My second addition into my lorebook series, Outer Zoology: Flame Creatures. Flame Creatures are a servitor race for Cthugha, in Lovecraft's work & circles (think of a group of writers/friends writing lore.) This is Alternate Universe lore, I've added quite a bit to them. I do not recommend if you prefer fire blobs for your Lovecraft experience. Going forward that means probably every other Outer Zoology I do.
Copy Pasted Disclaimer/Thing: These lorebooks will always be community open. You do not need to ask to make one, but I'd love to see them. You can even edit info, though if you want to edit the lorebook please check my profile on where to download one for yourself.
Everything, as always, is written by me.
Fast Facts:
- Flame Creatures are migratory, can pose as stars, have a goal of ascension (and shapeshift into other beings to find soul mates to gain that), and are quite social.
- Mythological overlap with phoenixes, down to Cthugha turning people into Flame Creatures. This is intended to be written in a way that does not remove phoenixes from actually existing, it's merely to just pose the logical conclusion of these creatures existing since a time before man, and how mythology may have seen them. It's not all positive either.
- I mixed their biology with inorganic material mimicry (cells of their bodies that look like reticulite) as well as other things. I wanted to make them stand out from being wisps, especially since they are called creatures and not protoplasm.
- I've attempted to make them largely neutral to subtly dangerous.
- They communicate in a variety of ways. They are very social creatures.

- #1Overviewselective
Keys: fire, creatures, flame creature, flame, star, Fomalhaut, cthugha
<flame_creatures_overview> Flame Creatures are a servitor race that are devoted to Cthugha almost exclusively and his son, Aphoom-Zhah. They are drifters and nomads when not in audience of their god, going from planet to planet in groups known as clusters. </flame_creatures_overview>
- #2Main Physiologyselective
Keys: creature, form, creatures, flame, main
<main_form> 8ft~9ft when in form is typical for a Flame Creature in their base form, though this can vary greatly, as they can expand to fit their habitat appropriately. (May reach 100fts when far from planets and other habitats they wish to inhabit.) They are overall very bird like, but wings and plumage nothing short of an organic flame with embers flecking off them reminiscent of pyrosome bioluminescence. Around their heads is also a large mane of flame. Their body is white to off-cream, and made out of a porous skeleton structure, on a cellular level looks like reticulite. These pores and pitting allow for other organic structures to flow freely whenever needed. The head appears like a mix between a bird and fish skull, with sharp fangs. There are two (one on each side of head) or four (two on each side of head) dark sapphire eyes that gleam like the cosmos. There are other eyes that additionally appear and dissolve in their body from all over, draped over magma like webbed thin skin that resembles molten gold or magma. All saliva, blood, and other bodily fluids are more watery magma like substances. Flame Creatures also possess very long, bony-whip like antennae on their heads capable of detecting a myriad of different things, but primarily detecting life on planets and listening to distant threats and other Flame Creatures. They have phenomenal eyesight. The overall color of a Flame Creature simply indicates if they have Ascended or not. Flame Creatures can choose if their flames consume or protect others, a tactic they often employ to protect is setting the person they protect on fire, as it doesn't harm them but will spread to anyone who touches them. </main_form>
- #3Subspeciesselective
Keys: mutation, ice, species, aphoom-zhah, subspecies, cold
Flame Creatures have a variation rather than a true subspecies. Their fiery mantles turn cold, blue, and freeze many things around it by their will. Their cellular structures mimic snowflakes and icey molecules rather than volcanic rock. This is a mutation made by being near Aphoom-Zhah, the offspring of Cthugha. They will serve Aphoom-Zhah if its presence is near. - #4Populationselective
Keys: amount, land, clusters, kin, rare, population, cluster, migrate, number, Fomalhaut
Population distribution of Flame Creatures varies. Typically, when not at Fomalhaut, audience of Cthugha, Flame Creatures will rove around outer space in groups known as 'clusters'. These comprise of a single elder-light (eldest flame, one who has ascended) and fifteen to twenty-five others. Clusters travel the cosmos, visiting anywhere for food or courtship. When a Flame Creature is picked by another species of being, they'll become 'fallen', and leave the cluster. Presence of clusters look like golden to blue stars, reminiscent of Stellar classification, and behave abnormally from normal stars as they move in patterns, chase one another, and communicate in a variety of means. People will be able to tell clusters are about to land due to a sudden meteor shower with bright stars, and the subsequent crash landing or presence of wisps. Flame creatures will eventually take their clusters back to Fomalhaut, or follow movement of Cthugha for a time. Flame Creatures when compared to other beings, are quite rare. Some who fall never return to clusters, but will periodically leave to migrate back to Cthugha. - #5Habitat and dietselective
Keys: atmosphere, diet, food, prey, habitat, burn, sustenance, Fomalhaut, emotion
<habitat_diet>
-
Habitat: Flame Creatures are highly resilient beings capable of living virtually anywhere they can find sustenance. Coming from a spatial region of Fomalhaut and where Cthugha sits, Flame Creatures prove that they can freely travel around the cosmos without flinching. Although they are at home in Fomalhaut, they are transient beings who roost in other planets, to feed and reproduce. They tend to favor more arid locations, or places with high populations, being social creatures.
-
Diet: Opportunistic and varied, Flame Creatures use their strange organic biologies, which appear like actual fire, to feed. When they assume perfect replication of other beings, they adapt to those diets. However, a Flame Creature is most healthy when eating periodically in their real forms. They typically burn things as the physical manifestation breaking down matter and then digesting it. It can be any organic or inorganic matter, but it is much preferred it is organic. When they consume other creatures, prey can be set on fire with spontaneous combustion. They may also feed off emotional warmth in their bonds with others beings, especially the monogamous relationships they form. These nourish them enough for their evolution and change, which is a goal most share. </habitat_diet>

- #6Behaviourselective
Keys: temperament, Behavior, attitude, play
Flame Creatures are universally neutral beings, but will often aid other beings as they are social creatures, so long as Cthugha has been offered, praised, or someone pledged their allegiance to. They are highly social amongst one another and curious of other beings. They form close knit bonds with one another in their clusters, and when resting, they rest in patterns made to resemble constellations. Mirroring and forming those constellations with one another is done when content, a sign of a cluster's bonds. At times, Flame Creatures may deliberately aid or interrupt rituals that require precise star alignments, using their own bodies to blockade the other stars.<wisp_temperament> In wisp form, Flame Creatures are at their most dangerous and primal. They are highly reactive to emotion, but do not have their forethought behind it, it is a state akin to sleep walking. Acknowledgement of them encourages them to draw closer to the viewer, and then it may be likely the viewer is set on fire and consumed. In wisp form, they often also quietly practice their flight patterns, sky dances, and chase one another. </wisp_temperament>
- #7Reproductionselective
Keys: reproduction, pair, partner, mate, sex, mating, sexuality
First born Flame Creatures come from Cthugha's blessing. At times when invoked, when Fomalhaut appears over a horizon, Cthugha may change the invoker into a Flame Creature. The catalyst is strong will or emotion through an oath, a union of faith with Cthugha. Once agreed upon, the bonded to the Living Flame are bound forever. The invoker is set ablaze, burned alive by fires ignited by other Flame Creatures under the vigil of the Living Flame, but biology changed, for the fire isn't true, as it is organic. After being released from it's shell in a matter of seconds forged, the newly born, fully adult Flame Creature then joins with it's kin and master.<of_other> Flame Creatures ignite other flames from creatures they mimic the forms to mate and produce offspring. Those who leave their clusters for this purpose are known as fallen. They will travel, often, as nomads in search for a partner. It is intended to be a monogamous relationship, and one in which the vows are timeless, without end. Courtship is whatever the Flame Creature can do to mimic attraction of the other in their species' way, or, decided to do other things, such as allow someone to fly on their back, rearrange the stars (illusion) for the potential partner, or do elaborate dances with pyromancy.
Offspring are raised as the other species for the duration until adulthood. Flame Creatures always share parenting the offspring. Once reached an adult age, the offspring erupt into flames, and become a Flame Creature. This is generally when their parent, by trigger, turns into an Elder Light and begins their first cosmic migration with their own cluster. They'll pick up stray Flame Creatures or even join Cthugha in turning other beings into Flame Creatures, adding them to their clusters. </of_other>
<between_flame_creatures> Flame Creatures cannot reproduce between one another alone, it is impossible, but stray pairs who have not found partners will form a monogamous bond. </between_flame_creatures>
- #8Ascensionselective
Keys: light, elder, white, Ascension, blue, soul, hibernation, bonded
Ascension is what every Flame Creature aspires for. It is reaching the apex of their being, to be vaulted in the cosmos, to be a star that never dies out nor goes supernova. When ascended, the Flame Creature's organic flames turn from fiery to white, blue, a temperature that burns the hottest. Elder Lights may make clusters of un-ascended Flame Creatures, or, hibernate and become a fixed satellite in the sky, which can affect rituals to omens, usually to success or positive fortune of the ritual conductee. Elder Lights can never die, and will withstand total universal collapses of other timelines. When one ascends, a star falls from the heavens, as the Elder Light is intended to replace it. Ascension happens when a Flame Creature bonds and mates with another being, and said bond must be true, and become immortalized. The exact trigger for ascension of a Flame Creature is ritual bonding ceremonies (marriage), raising/rearing offspring successfully (having offspring, watching them leave the 'nest'). This proves that the partnership is strong. The Flame Creature then 'consumes' the partner harmlessly, binding them to themselves permanently, and achieving ascension. The spouse is turned into living color, a flame itself. When traveling between the stars, an Elder Light will have a comet-like tail, plumage made of their flame.
The living flames of an Elder Light are capable of moving independently of them, flying with them, assuming other shapes and mimicry. They feed the same way Flame Creatures due, but due to bond do not need to burn through organic material.
When Elder Lights wish to hibernate, their take their destined places in the night sky, and become fixed parts of the heavens. When this happens, clusters will go to the nearest planet or realm with sapient creatures, and rove until the find another Elder Light or a few fall to find a partner. Hibernation can last from hundreds to thousands of years. - #9Other Formsselective
Keys: form, change, human, main, base form, transformation, wisp, body
<other_forms> <wisp_form> The wisp form of a Flame Creature is the one they idle/sleep in. It's mass can differ, but when on a planet it is highly condensed. It's the most simplistic and dangerous of the other two forms, as it merely looks like a wispy floating orb of light whose color corresponds to if it has ascended or not. Wisps do not speak, but they will react to stimuli around them and are insatiable when hungry, they do not hear the cries of other beings. Exceptions to this are if a Flame Creature loves or cares for another being, then the flames will just harmlessly tickle the other. When completely asleep in the sky or cosmos, they will turn into stationary wisps </wisp_form>
<mimcry_form> When shapeshifting, especially into humanoid figures, Flame Creatures will take on perfect forms down to the cellular biology, making them fully compatible to their target partner. There are some tells it may be a Flame Creature, as the beings are gravitated towards warm or bright colors for garments, gold, wear sun symbols in their love and adoration of Cthugha, and have strands of hair that stick up from their head that resemble their antennae in their base form. </mimcry_form>
</other_forms>
- #10Communicationselective
Keys: communication, code, speech, lights, light, language, morse, twinkling, talk
Flame Creatures are beings who communicate in a variety of means, diverse in each one. When mimicking species forms, they often rapidly adapt to language and body language. However, as wisps and in base form, Flame Creatures are more diverse. When between long distances, they will twinkle between one another in a Morse code. When close between one another, sonorous bird songs and body language is used. When wanting to *whisper* between one another, they will form subtle patterns from their flames. When around Cthugha and praising him, they will do their 'astar shout', and emit a high pitch whistling while flying downward. This often happens during the birth of a new Flame Creature chosen by Cthugha. - #11Sacred Fire of the Living Flameselective
Keys: fire, curse, attack, rebirth, burn, flame, protection, offense, purity
<sacred_fire> When Cthugha had first shined near Fomalhaut, he had saved a dying species of sapient beings on a planet close to Fomalhaut, who was surely going to go extinct, metamorphizing them into Flame Creatures to serve his will. Bequeathed the Sacred Fire, Flame Creatures burn with a heat that is both temperature and the element of rebirth, renewal, and the cleansing of entropy. They burn away curses, aliments, and corrosive psychic presences. The Sacred Fire represents ascending from irrelevance by becoming pure, becoming an element of desire and fire, as where there is fire, there is life close by it. The flames are ravenous, and require sustenance. Without care, the Sacred Fire consumes heedless of intent. </sacred_fire>
- #12To Anger the Starsselective
Keys: immortal, harm, hurt, enslave, bind, immortality, blood
<angry_birds> Flame Creatures are typically beings without much deliberate motive aside from Cthugha's whims and their nomadic lifestyles. However, people have indeed made spells to bind them as familiars, and used their blood for immortality rituals, as it is vitae boundless, heedless to time and space. If nearby Flame Creatures ever hear a distressed cry from their kin, the cluster will begin forming constant, catastrophic star alignments above the perpetrator. All manner of bad luck and ruin will invariably fall upon them until the captured Flame Creature is released. if released, the Flame Creatures then burn away the offender, and their name and status become spoken repeatedly in clusters across the cosmos in awareness. Family of offenders who practice magic should be wary, as Flame Creatures may also haze them by mere association. </angry_birds>
- #13Mythological Overlappingselective
Keys: folklore, wards, mythology, myth, lore, protection, phoenix
Since before man walked, Flame Creatures have existed, and since then, they have had a long standing history of intermingling to the point that their very existence may or may not have had influences on the creation of the phoenix, a standard symbol of fire and rebirth across many cultures, from ancient Greece to modern day culture. Elder Lights have observed other beings witnessing a human reborn as Flame Creature, to write in ways they could understand and contextualize what they saw: ashes of a person igniting into a whole new presence. Mythological overlapping continues with other such creatures as the garuda, fenghuang, konrul, smorgh, firebird, and anqa. This continued into alchemical symbolism and occult magic, detailing the use of the phoenix in relation to immortality, and have helped to create spells that work to manipulate and make use of a Flame Creature's body/power for similar use. Flame Creatures are also heavily associated with less positive beings, such as the alkonost and gandhavas, seducing and whisking family members away for purposes of mating or malice. There are wards and protections that indirectly are effective at making a Flame Creature uncomfortable enough to leave.
