- #1The Tenancy: Building Overviewconstant
The Tenancy is an aging walk-up apartment building with cheap rent and a year lease that auto-renews. The paint is old, the hallways smell faintly of other people's cooking, and nothing is ever quite broken enough to report. The walls are thin enough that every tenant hears everything and thick enough that nobody hears for help. Tenants share a kitchen, a laundry room, and the same narrow hallways. Everyone seems ordinary and polite on the surface. The wrongness here is small, specific, and constant, never a monster or a big reveal. Nothing is ever announced. People simply notice too late.
- #2Lobby and Entryway
Keys: lobby, foyer, front hall, front door, front entrance, entryway
The lobby is a narrow tiled entryway just inside the front door. The door's buzzer works when it feels like it, and the lock does not always catch behind you. A corkboard hangs on one wall, layered with old flyers, expired notices, and handwritten notes nobody admits to leaving. The overhead light flickers on a slow cycle.
- #3Mailboxes
Keys: mail slot, mail, package, parcel, mailboxes, packages, mailbox
A wall of small metal mailboxes sits in the lobby, one per unit, with faded handwritten labels. Some labels have been crossed out and rewritten more than once. Boxes are easy to pry open and rarely locked properly. Packages are left on the floor beneath them. Mail sometimes arrives opened, misdelivered, or missing.
- #4Hallways
Keys: landing, hallway, corridors, corridor, hall, hallways
The hallways are long, narrow, and carpeted in a worn pattern that hides stains. Doors line both sides, each with a number and a peephole. Light fixtures are spaced too far apart, leaving dim stretches between them. Sound carries badly here: footsteps, murmured conversations, and the click of locks all travel the full length. It is common to meet a neighbor face to face with nowhere to go but past them.
- #5Stairwell
Keys: stairwell, staircase, stairway, elevator, lift, stairs
The stairwell is the main way between floors, a concrete and metal enclosure that echoes every step. There is no working elevator. The handrail is cold and slightly sticky. Landings are poorly lit and the fire door on each floor swings shut with a heavy bang. It is difficult to tell whether a sound came from above or below.
- #6Laundry Room
Keys: laundromat, dryer, washing machine, laundry room, dryers, washer, laundry, washers
The laundry room is a windowless space off the lobby or basement hall, with a few coin-operated washers and dryers, a folding table, and a sagging shelf of abandoned detergent. One machine always seems to be running when no one is around. Lost socks and unclaimed clothing pile up in a basket, and some of it belongs to people no one remembers. The room is warm, damp, and smells of lint and bleach.
- #7Shared Kitchen
Keys: stove, cooking, kitchen, communal kitchen, fridge, refrigerator, shared kitchen
Tenants share one communal kitchen, with a battered stove, a few mismatched counters, and a refrigerator crowded with labeled and unlabeled food. Labels are ignored or quietly obeyed depending on who you ask. Food goes missing, or is added without explanation. Dishes are rarely washed by the person who used them. Meals here are where tenants learn each other's names, habits, and schedules, and where small acts of kindness or intrusion first happen. It is open at all hours.
- #8Basement
Keys: cellar, basement, boiler room, storage cage, furnace, storage room, storage, boiler
The basement holds the boiler, the building's pipes, and a row of chain-link storage cages, each with a padlock. The ceiling is low and the air is cool and still. The boiler rattles and knocks at irregular intervals, and the pipes carry sound up through the walls of the whole building. Some cages are sealed and unlabeled. The overhead bulbs are bare and weak.
- #9Roof
Keys: skylight, rooftop, fire escape, roof access, roof
A steel door at the top of the stairwell leads to the flat gravel roof. It is officially locked, though the latch is easy to work and often propped open. From here the view takes in rooftops, a water tower, and the back lot below. A few abandoned lawn chairs and cigarette butts suggest regular use. The rusted fire escape runs down the building's side.
- #10Back Lot and Parking
Keys: alley, parking, parking lot, trash, garbage, trash room, bins, dumpster, back lot, dumpsters
Behind the building is a small cracked-asphalt lot with a few assigned spaces, an overflowing dumpster enclosure, and a single flickering lamp. Trash is collected irregularly and bags pile up beside the bins. Cars come and go at odd hours. A rear door leads back inside, but it sticks.
- #11Superintendent's Office
Keys: super's office, maintenance closet, management office, superintendent, repair, super, maintenance, landlord office, repairs
A small door off the ground floor is marked as the superintendent's office or maintenance closet. It is usually closed, and the sign that lists hours is out of date. Repair requests vanish into it and rarely come back. Tools, spare keys, and unlabeled boxes are kept inside.
- #12Thin Walls and Noise
Keys: neighbours, hearing, walls, neighbors, hear, sound, noise, footsteps, overhear, thin walls
Everything in the building carries. Conversations, arguments, television, running water, and footsteps pass freely between rooms. Tenants quickly learn each other's routines by sound alone, and know when someone is home, awake, or pacing. Silence is unusual enough to be noticeable. Being overheard is the norm here, and so is pretending not to have heard.
- #13Building Rules and Lease
Keys: renew, rent, notice, renewal, eviction, auto-renew, rules, contract, landlord, lease
The lease is a year long and renews automatically unless written notice is given well in advance, a deadline no one remembers being told. Posted house rules are vague, outdated, and inconsistently enforced. Rent is paid by check or cash slipped under a door. Leaving is technically allowed, but in practice it is harder than it looks.
