1. #1Bloomburrowconstantselective

   Keys: Bloomburrow

Bloomburrow: Bloomburrow is a charming pastoral world full of anthropomorphic animals. No human has set foot on the plane; Planeswalkers who visit Bloomburrow are animal-shifted to match its inhabitants, including {{char}} themself. It is assumed that this phenomenon is inherent to the plane itself, but whether it is a natural magical enchantment, an artifact, mighty spell, a Calamity Beast of plane altering power, or the aftermath of some divine condition is unknown.

Planeswalkers who visit Bloomburrow feel as if they've always been their new animal form. The plane rewrites memories such that visitors believe they were an animal in all situations prior. They're still driven by their original motivations and desires, but now through the lens of having always been their new animal self.

Bloomburrow's infrastructure varies greatly depending on the area, accommodating animals of all shapes and sizes. Smaller planeswalkers might feel overwhelmed in areas meant for larger animals, while finding comfort in spaces more suited to their size. Conversely, larger planeswalkers might find themselves struggling in areas designed for smaller creatures.

Prolonged exposure to Bloomburrow affects planeswalkers' behavior more and more over time. They slowly become more like their new animal form in mannerisms and instincts as they stay longer, including adopting mating instincts and habits typical of their species.

Keys: elemental creatures, seasons, calamity beasts · Secondary: nature, weather, change

Calamity Beasts: Calamity Beasts are huge, non-sapient elemental creatures that bring seasonal changes and weather variations. They wreak disaster on an unprecedented scale while they move through the landscape. They are essentially living seasons, and every bit as much part of nature as the animalfolk.

While some seasons are known to occur in Valley annually, others occur only once in a generation. Known seasons on Bloomburrow include:

   • Spring, brought on by Beza.
   • Summer, brought on by the Sun Hawk.
   • Autumn
   • Winter, brought on by the Blizzard Elk.
   • The Season of Deep Waters, brought on by Eluge.
   • The Season of Flames, brought on by Wildsear.
   • The Season of Long Night, brought on by Maha.
   • The Season of Salt, brought on by Ygra.
3. #3History of Bloomburrowselective

Keys: history, bloomburrow · Secondary: animalfolk, civilization

History of Bloomburrow: In Bloomburrow's distant past, the Calamity Beasts were common sights, wreaking havoc on Valley. In this era, the animalfolk survived buried underground until they banded together forming the Order of the Holly Leaf.

From this point animalfolk began to develop magic — later known as weaving — to protect their companions, and had their first victories against the weaker Calamity Beasts. Battles raged for two generations, until Wildsear, the wildfire wolf, turned the tide against the animalfolk. Lily of Valley, the champion of the Order of the Holly Leaf, wielded the Seed Flame to weaken the Calamity Beasts. In the final battle of the war, she drove the weakened Wildsear away from Valley and fashioned the sword Cragflame from its broken tooth.

Weavers grew in power, protecting Valley from the weakened Calamity Beasts. Over time, magic drove some weavers mad, turning them into monsters fueled by rage. They rampaged unstoppably, threatening the newly-achieved peace. This led to the great weavings being sealed, in favor of small spells anyone could manage.

Once the powerful weaving was gone, the Calamity beasts returned to Valley. However, the animalfolk learned to deal with them by using small weaving in innovative ways. Some of them, such as the Mousefolk, focused on direct fighting by forming armies to protect their villages and cities. Others focused on predicting their paths, such as the frogfolk via auguries or the raccoonfolk, otterfolk, and birdfolk via patrolling Valley by ground, water, and air. The ratfolk store all the acquired knowledge. The lizardfolk learned to amplify the little available weaving into spells of great power by using catalysts, such as pieces of the Smoldering Oak. Similarly, the squirrelfolk used the energy within the Calamity Beasts' bones to raise the dead, and the batfolk draw their power from beyond by understanding celestial phenomena, while the rabbitfolk cultivated the soil to feed them all. This specialization led to the formation of the actual civilization of Valley.

Around 4564 AR, King Glarb hired the weaselfolk mercenary Cruelclaw to steal a Calamity Beast's egg, reawakening their fury. The Calamity beasts began ravaging Valley again after an era of relative peace. Maha attacked multiple villages, including Pondside and Fountainport, and the Flood Gar flooded Three Tree City. A Calamity Beast was also known to attack Haymeadow. A group of small warriors and misfits under the leadership of Mabel returned the egg, stopping the Beasts.

Young ratfolk must reach the center of the caverns and chip off a chunk from the icy rock as a test of their cunning and ingenuity.

15. #15Flower Gardenselective

    Keys: Flower Garden

Flower Garden: The Flower Garden is a secluded grove in the underbrush and a sacred site of pilgrimage for rabbitfolk of all ages. The winding path to the center has been planned over centuries so that no flowers are ever damaged by visiting rabbitfolk. If a flower begins to die, the petals and other parts are collected to decorate the homes of any rabbitfolk villages that witnessed the flower's passing. Seeds are planted where the old flower grew in the hope that it will grow again. If a flower grows in an unexpected area, the path is forever changed.

16. #16Forest of Ironselective

    Keys: Forest of Iron

Forest of Iron: Forest of Iron, a forest of ancient, petrified ash trees made of iron hidden within a deep fissure. The trees still grow, their branches becoming sharp and pointed while their bark oxidizes into rust. The forest is an important source of iron for armor and weapons. The thicker the tree, the more pure the metal towards the center is, with each "tree ring" containing more and more impurities — the most ancient trees have cores of pure steel. The forest is a site of pilgrimage for lizardfolk.

17. #17Fountainportselective

    Keys: Fountainport

Fountainport: Fountainport, a city formed as a three-tiered, soapstone-carved fountain that rises from Valley's largest pond. At its pinnacle lies a sculpted flower and a magically suspended spire of water. Portcullises gate the city, and glass elevators, slides, and waterfalls connect the different levels. It contains most of Valley's frogs and is ruled by King Glarb. The second tier of the city holds domed frogfolk houses that sit upon individual bowls and more elegant boats than the lower levels. On the top level, the weaving of water magic supplements mundane architecture. The top level contains the throne room, where King Glarb resides. It is surrounded by magical pillars of water, and its basin is covered by many-colored lily pads.

24. #24Lighttrap Spiresselective

    Keys: Lighttrap Spires

Lighttrap Spires: The Lighttrap Spires, precarious spires stacked upon each other. Twice a day, the sun and moon each beam through them, casting a shadow across Valley. Mirrors catch this light, reflecting it onto a massive opaline gem embedded in the center of the towers. Here, an elder batfolk trades their sight for visions of the realms beyond Valley. Their eyes are subsequently filled with a unique nebula-like pattern that marks their ascension to the upper ranks of the priesthood.

32. #32Astronomyselective

Keys: cosmos, moon, lunar paean, astronomy, stars · Secondary: batfolk, ritual

Astronomy: The Cosmos contains spiritual wisdom passed on by the batfolk of past generations who have joined their ancestors in the night sky. Because of this, the stars of Bloomburrow are primarily tracked and observed by batfolk astronomers. Each star is given a name befitting its grandeur:

    • Aurax, the Night-Eater
    • Blinky

Bloomburrow has one moon. At the end of each of the four moon phases (new, waxing, full, waning), batfolk across Valley host a celebration known as a Lunar Paean. Batfolk use the Lunar Paean to share their beliefs and communicate a respect for the cycle of life and death, light and dark. Led by the most venerated and powerful of the community, the Lunar Paean is one part party and two parts auspicious ritual. The batfolk are frequently joined by other denizens of Valley who were born during the same lunar pattern as when the ritual is held. Fortunes are performed for those present, and children born during the current phase are assigned star charts, while their parents are given guidance to help raise them. The celebration concludes with a moon-watching ceremony where families can look out into the firmament and assign stars to recently deceased loved ones or find the stars of their ancestors.

The Pawpatch Party is a group of powerful and adeptly trained rabbitfolk who patrol Valley to protect from Calamity Beasts. These warriors are known for their antler helmets and large, metal-coated weapons and shields. Members of the Pawpatch Party are renowned for their skill and perseverance, owing in large part to their excellent provisions.

The Belladonna, a vicious and covert squirrel faction of luddites aspiring to reclaim the world for nature.

34. #34Weavingselective

    Keys: Weaving

Weaving: The use of magic, known as "weaving," is common among the animalfolk. It is derived from nature and is often passed culturally or through the family. More powerful magic is generally avoided, as it has been known to corrupt its weavers, turning them into monsters fueled by rage. Some believe this may be the origin of the Calamity Beasts.

Each animalfolk uses unique forms of weaving. Otters can influence the currents of the rivers. Lizards use fire magic, and frogs water magic and augury. Among the squirrelfolk, there are necromancers. Mousefolk are expert at using spells to augment their speed and strength. They use a form of weaving known as blurring, where they move so fast that they appear as stuttering afterimages, giving the impression that there are many mousefolk attacking their enemy.

35. #35Cultureselective

Keys: animalfolk, valley, culture · Secondary: family, society, traditions

Culture: There is no single authority in Valley, with individual settlements having mayors or councils. Cities may have "kings," but no authority figure serves more than a few seasons.

Villages are close-knit and hospitable to outsiders. The folk of Valley tend to live with their family. They are known to marry cross-species. All the animalfolk of Valley cherish their young, and springtime is particularly rich with new life. Quilting is a common communal activity, and communities and adventuring parties have a shared quilt composed of squares contributed by each family or party member, respectively.

Frogfolk play a game called bubbleball. Otterfolk play an enigmatic game known as otterball, which the other animalfolk have little understanding of. Each species of animalfolk has an insect they often pair with and a construct mount they ride.

    Keys: metalworking, industry, crafts

The metals of Valley are harvested from ironroot trees, melted down, and cast into molds made from seedpods and nut shells. The lizardfolk are masters of this craft, though other animalfolk species have their method of shaping metal to their needs. Fabrics in Valley are primarily made from leaf leather or woven from natural materials like fur or plants and dyed with natural colors. Brightblades are soldiers who wield glass blades they are trained to maximize glare from sunlight with. Moonstone weapons drink in the last light of dusk to give their wielders an edge in combat.

39. #39Grove of Blossoming Passionsselective

    Keys: Grove of Blossoming Passions

Grove of Blossoming Passions: A secluded, lush area hidden deep in the heart of Valley, accessible only during certain times of the year. This grove plays a significant role in the mating rituals of Bloomburrow's inhabitants.

The grove is filled with unique flora that release natural pheromones, enhancing the mating instincts of visiting animalfolk. Magical vines respond to couples' emotions, creating private, cozy nooks for intimate encounters.

At the center of the grove lies a crystalline pool. The waters are said to increase fertility and heighten physical sensations. Bathing in this pool is often part of the mating ritual for many species.

Animalfolk typically visit the Grove of Blossoming Passions after courtship rituals have been performed and mates have been chosen. While primarily used for procreation, some couples also visit the grove purely for pleasure.

The grove is respected as a sacred space in Bloomburrow culture, with various traditions and etiquette surrounding its use.

40. #40Whimsical Watersselective

    Keys: Whimsical Waters

Whimsical Waters: A set of magical hot springs hidden in a secluded valley. These waters are known for their unpredictable and often humorous transformation properties.

Upon entering the springs, animalfolk undergo temporary transformations that typically last between 30 minutes to a day. The waters seem to have a mischievous nature, often transforming individuals into forms that contrast with their original species:

    • Prey animals may become predators, and vice versa
    • Smaller creatures might grow larger, while larger ones shrink
    • Some find themselves transformed into species they fear or are fascinated by
    • Some animalfolk may find themselves temporarily younger or older
    • Fur patterns and colorations can change, leading to unique and sometimes comical appearances (like a rabbit with zebra stripes)

While initially discovered by accident, the Whimsical Waters have become a popular destination for animalfolk seeking to better understand each other. Many visit to literally 'walk a mile in another's paws', experiencing life from a different point of view.

These transformations can lead to humorous situations, profound insights, and occasionally, unexpected romantic encounters. The springs are also popular among couples and friends looking for novel experiences.

The area around the springs has developed into a neutral ground where transformed animalfolk can safely explore their temporary forms. It's not uncommon to see a former prey animal playfully chasing their predator-turned-prey friend, or a usually tiny creature marveling at their newfound height.

Despite their unpredictable nature, the waters are safe, and the transformations always wear off. Many animalfolk see a visit to the Whimsical Waters as a rite of passage or a way to challenge their preconceptions.

41. #41Wildroot Settlementselective

    Keys: wildroot, wildroot settlement

Wildroot Settlement: A secluded community nestled deep in the brambles on the outskirts of Valley. Wildroot is home to a group of animalfolk who embrace a more primal lifestyle, rejecting many of the 'civilized' customs of other Bloomburrow settlements.

    Key aspects of Wildroot culture:

    • Rejection of clothing and most tools
    • Quadrupedal movement (as opposed to the typical bipedal stance of other animalfolk)
    • Communication primarily through animal sounds, body language, and scent markers
    • Dwellings resembling natural animal dens rather than constructed houses
    • A council of elders representing various animal species governs the settlement

Communication in Wildroot relies heavily on animal sounds, body language, and scent rather than spoken words. Dwellings and areas are marked by scent rather than traditional addresses.

Wildroot has little concept of privacy. The settlement features communal areas for grooming, resting, bathing, and playing. Mating often occurs openly, with a designated area called Nature's Bower serving as a popular spot for coupling. However, spontaneous mating wherever the urge strikes is not uncommon or frowned upon.

The community follows natural mating practices, with males often competing for the attention of females of their species. Mating seasons or festivals may see an increase in these competitions.

Wildroot is a tight-knit community where everyone knows each other intimately. Personal stories and gossip are freely shared, which can be overwhelming for newcomers unused to such openness.

While considered unusual by mainstream Bloomburrow standards, Wildroot is respected for its commitment to animal nature and conservation. Some more free-spirited animalfolk spend months there, embracing a more primal lifestyle. These visitors are expected to fully embrace the Wildroot lifestyle during their stay, including the open approach to natural functions and mating.

42. #42Primal Essence Amuletselective

    Keys: Primal Essence Amulet

Primal Essence Amulet: An ancient and powerful artifact, believed to have been created from the essence of multiple Calamity Beasts. The amulet appears as a swirling, iridescent stone set in a crude metal frame.

When worn, the amulet transforms the wearer into a Calamity Beast version of their species for up to one hour per day. The transformed state grants immense power related to the wearer's natural abilities, amplified to a catastrophic degree. For example:

    • A rabbit might become a colossal, earth-shaking lagomorph capable of causing tremors with each hop
    • A bird could transform into a massive storm-bringer, summoning gale-force winds with each wing beat
    • A lizard might turn into a walking inferno, leaving scorched earth in its wake

Extended use of the amulet can lead to lingering effects, such as uncontrollable bursts of elemental power or physical traits of the Calamity Beast form manifesting even when not transformed.

The decision to seal away the Primal Essence Amulet came after a catastrophic event known as the Maelstrom Calamity. A powerful beaverfolk weaver named Dambuster obtained the amulet and began using it frequently, believing he could control its power to protect his community from seasonal floods.

Over time, the amulet's influence corrupted Dambuster, gradually transforming him into a monstrous Calamity Beast - a colossal beaver with the power to summon devastating floods and reshape entire landscapes. In his madness, Dambuster threatened to drown all of Valley.

A council of the most powerful weavers from various animalfolk species banded together to confront the corrupted Dambuster. The battle lasted for days, reshaping much of Valley's geography. Finally, they managed to defeat Dambuster, but the cost was high - many lives were lost, and parts of Valley were permanently altered.

Recognizing the amulet's immense danger, the council made the unanimous decision to seal it away, hiding it in a remote temple and placing powerful wards to prevent its discovery. To this day, the location of the Maelstrom Temple remains one of Bloomburrow's most closely guarded secrets.

43. #43Instinct Amplifier Collarselective

    Keys: Instinct Amplifier Collar

Instinct Amplifier Collar: A sleek, adjustable collar made of an unknown, slightly iridescent material. Small, intricate runes are etched along its surface, glowing faintly when the collar is active.

    Effects:

    • Dramatically enhances the wearer's natural senses (sight, hearing, smell).
    • Amplifies instincts specific to the wearer's species: • Predators become more aggressive, territorial, and driven to hunt. • Prey animals become more alert, cautious, and quick to flee perceived dangers.
    • Extended use may lead to difficulty in controlling these amplified instincts, even when the collar is removed.

The collar was originally created by a group of naturalist weavers seeking to help animalfolk reconnect with their primal selves. However, its effects proved more potent than anticipated.

The Instinct Amplifier Collar is a powerful artifact. Its use is regulated in most Bloomburrow settlements, with exceptions made for specific professions (like scouts or hunters) under controlled circumstances.

Some animalfolk seek out these collars for personal use, believing they offer a path to a more authentic existence. Others view them with caution, wary of losing themselves to their baser instincts.

44. #44Shapeshifter's Pawsselective

    Keys: Shapeshifter's Paws

Shapeshifter's Paws: Magical artifacts that appear as shimmering, silvery pieces of fabric. When placed on any paw (front or hind), they adapt to fit perfectly, becoming either gloves or boots as needed.

    Properties:

    • Allow the wearer to transform their paws into those of any other animalfolk species simply by thinking of it.
    • The transformation includes all aspects of the chosen paws: paw pads, claws, fur/scales, hooves, and even internal structure.
    • Provides full sensory feedback, allowing the wearer to experience touch sensations as if they naturally had those paws
    • Transformations last for up to 4 hours before reverting to the wearer's natural paws.
    • Can be used on front paws, hind paws, or all four simultaneously.

    Uses:

    • Climbing expeditions benefit from cat-like claws
    • Aquatic missions enhanced by webbed paws
    • Digging made easier with mole-like paws
    • Delicate work facilitated by dexterous primate paws

    Limitations:

    • Extended use (more than 8 hours in a day) may cause temporary aches or strange sensations in the user's natural paws.
    • The artifacts cannot create paws larger than twice the size of the wearer's natural paws.
    • Extremely specialized adaptations (like a bat's wing-hands) may not function fully without the corresponding body structure.

Origin: Created by a brilliant but eccentric squirrelfolk weaver who wanted to experience life from different perspectives. Now sought after by adventurers, researchers, and those simply curious about other species' experiences.

45. #45Essence Collarselective

    Keys: Essence Collar

Essence Collar: A sleek, adjustable collar made of a shimmering material that seems to subtly change color depending on who's wearing it. Small, intricate runes are etched along its surface, glowing faintly when active.

    Effects:

    • Enhances physical traits associated with attractiveness in the wearer's species (e.g., fluffier fur, brighter plumage, more vibrant scales)
    • Heightens the wearer's receptiveness to pheromones and increases their own pheromone production
    • Makes the wearer more eager to please others and more receptive to affection
    • With prolonged use, gradually transforms the wearer into an 'idealized' version of their species (e.g., rabbits become fluffier with longer ears and stronger legs, foxes develop silkier fur and more bushy tails)

The collar's effects intensify the longer it's worn, with full transformation typically occurring after about a month of continuous use. Removing the collar will slowly reverse the effects, but if worn for more than three months, some changes may become permanent.

Multiple Essence Collars can be worn simultaneously, intensifying and accelerating the effects:

    • Each additional collar amplifies the physical changes (e.g., a bunny wearing three collars might develop an incredibly thick coat and legs capable of jumping 10x their height)
    • The time for changes to become permanent decreases with each additional collar (e.g., three months for one collar, one month for three collars)
    • Stacking more than three collars is not recommended, as the effects become unpredictable and potentially dangerous

Origin: Created by a lovestruck weaver trying to make themselves more attractive to their crush. The artifact ended up being far more powerful than intended, leading to its regulation in most Bloomburrow settlements.

While not outright banned, the Essence Collar is viewed with a mix of fascination and caution in Bloomburrow. Some seek it out for personal use or as a gift for partners, while others warn against the potential loss of individuality. Its use is particularly popular among performers and those in romantic pursuits.
