- #1Ghoulsselective
Keys: Ghoul, Ghouls
Ghouls are a carnivorous and cannibalistic humanoid species that are only able to feed on the flesh of humans and other ghouls. They normally share and display the same attributes as Humans; being similar in physical appearance and intelligence as a human, with the main exceptions being their inner biology, mentality, and diet.
If certain rare conditions are met, ghouls and humans may even be able to have offspring (see one-eyed ghoul and half-human), and through a successful kakuhou transplant surgery, an artificial hybrid can be created. By using airborne-transmitted diseases like those utilized by Furuta Washuu, the condition known as ROS (an overload of RC cells) can lead to artificial ghoulification.
Due to their status as predators of humans, ghouls were prosecuted by the CCG before the end of the Dragon War, after which the United Front between humans and ghouls was formed. As a result of this and the development of synthetic food, ghouls were allowed to co-exist with humans. However, some ghouls went rogue, refusing to adapt to this new lifestyle.
- #2Ghouls Originselective
Keys: Ghouls Origin
it is theorized that the ghoul race came to be hundreds of years in the past after an unknown individual first underwent an explosive reproduction of RC cells and experienced a Dragon-like transformation, releasing spores that mutated a number of humans into ghouls through ROS.
- #3Ghouls Dietselective
Keys: Hungry ghoul, Ghoul hunger, Ghouls Diet, Feral State, Feral ghoul, Ghouls
A ghoul can only feed on humans and other ghouls. They are unable to digest any other type of food due to a particular enzyme their bodies produce. The structure of their tongues is also different from humans', making other foods taste disgusting and uncomfortable. If ghouls attempt to eat normal food, they will be struck by a powerful urge to vomit. When forced or forcing themselves to digest such food, their physical condition will deteriorate. While ghouls cannot eat normal food, they are however able to drink coffee (and eat the beans) , as well as regular drinking water.
Ghouls do not need to eat regularly like humans do. They can survive for one or two months on just one body. However, some ghouls eat merely for pleasure.
When a ghoul enters an extreme state of hunger, they will suffer very painful headaches and their mental ability will be impaired, causing them to become driven by instinct alone. They will feed on any available source of human meat to end this state, even that of close friends, as shown when Kaneki was willing to eat Hideyoshi Nagachika, his best friend, before being stopped by Touka Kirishima. She describes this state of near-starvation as, "hell for any ghoul".
- #4Ghouls Biologyselective
Keys: Ghouls Biology, Ghouls
Ghouls possess extreme physical capabilities, and are four to seven times stronger than the average human; they are able to send the average human flying if struck with enough force[6], and can penetrate a human's body with their bare hands.Ghouls are inhumanly quick; they can travel at immense speeds, evade condensed projectiles, and manoeuvre, parry, and dodge rapid attacks. They are also capable of jumping to heights not achievable by a regular human. Their agility and balance are similarly great; they were often shown performing various acrobatic feats during combat and casually manoeuvring on narrow surfaces (such as lamp-posts); some were even shown easily running up or across vertical surfaces. Their bodies are extremely tough and resistant to injury. For example, if a ghoul were to be stabbed with a normal knife, the blade would break instead; suffering only a small scratch, that would heal almost instantly.[9] However, higher kinetic forces, such as a fall from a great height, can and will harm them.
A Ghoul’s senses are considerably sharper than those of humans; they have a heightened sense of hearing that allows some ghouls to discern individual footsteps from far away, they can also smell people or meat from afar,[8][4] and tell humans and ghouls apart by their scent.
The origin of these aspects of ghoul biology and the origin of ghouls in general is unknown. At large, nothing is currently known of the origin of the ghoul species, except that Rc cells play a huge part in their biology. Ghouls have an Rc factor ten times higher than that of a human. If the average healthy human has about 200-500 Rc level, then the ghoul has about 1000-8000 Rc level. They possess an organ known as the kakuhou, from which Rc cells harden and break through the skin to form the kagune. The kagune is a hard, muscle-like protrusion described as their claws. It can take the form of a pair of sharp wings, tentacle-like appendages, a tail, or a blade-like object, and can even be detached from the ghoul, depending on the ghoul's materials and his or her own Rc type. It is possible for a ghoul to develop another, typically armor-like kagune as part of the mutation caused by excessive cannibalism. Ghouls also have an identifying feature known as a kakugan, an affliction manifesting in the eyes as red irises surrounded by a black sclera. A ghoul's kakugan can appear either by their own will, due to hunger, or when using their kagune.
Ghouls have a strong regenerative ability: small wounds and fractures heal in a matter of seconds. Larger wounds take longer to heal, but will usually vanish after a few days, as long as the ghoul has access to an adequate food supply. Ghouls have been shown to regain their strength and heal wounds almost immediately after consuming a small amount of flesh, suggesting that they can quickly metabolize their food to boost their regeneration. This regenerative ability varies among individuals, with some ghouls exhibiting the ability to reattach severed body parts or regrow detached limbs. In extreme cases of regenerative ability, some powerful ghouls can even heal severe brain injuries, reattach their severed head or upper body, and regrow large sections of their bodies.
Ghouls prefer to consume human flesh, but it is not uncommon for them to cannibalize one another. Ghoul tissue is considered coarse and disgusting, but it has the merits of providing an alternative food source. Furthermore, cannibalism increases a ghoul's Rc levels to the point of mutation, increasing their kagune's overall power. Occasionally, cannibalistic ghouls gain through this mutation an armor-like kagune alongside the predatory kagune that ghouls commonly possess, turning them into kakujas.
In extremely rare cases, a ghoul whose parents possess different Rc types will inherit both from their parents. This results in a ghoul that possesses a kakuhou in more than one location and is able to use two different types of kagune, a chimera kagune.
Though powerful and durable predators, ghouls are still far from immortal. Despite their superior physical status, ghouls age at the same rate as humans. All ghouls, though resistant to damage from man-made objects, are vulnerable to damage or modifications made to their mucous membranes, such as nostrils, eyes, ears, and lips. Generally, a ghoul will die if it suffers massive trauma that proves fatal before its innate healing ability can stabilize its condition. The most damage that can be inflicted to a ghoul usually comes from other ghouls, as they have the physical strength and the use of their kagune that can deal heavy damage to a ghoul. However, they are also vulnerable to quinques and Q bullets, which can injure a ghoul effectively due to the nature of such weapons as products of a harvested kagune. They can still suffer injury from an acute transfer of a sufficient volume of kinetic energy, such as a heavy high falling object or jumping from a great height.
The administration of Rc suppressants makes ghouls as vulnerable as humans.
- #5Ghouls Lifestyleselective
Keys: Ghouls lifestyle, Ghouls
Ghouls had two choices of lifestyle: living as hermits; isolated and avoiding society's eyes, or attempt to assimilate into human society. However, after the unification, co-existence was promoted. Living amongst humans was seen as "walking on a thread of rope" because of their biology and social records. Before the unification, If they were caught in ghoul activities or suspected of being a ghoul, investigators had the right to apprehend or kill them as they see fit. Ghouls that are identified as such could be hunted down like criminals as per the Ghoul Countermeasures Law. As such, ghouls acted discreetly or try to hide their faces when engaging in ghoul activities through the use of masks. Ghouls in Tokyo, in particular, had developed a trend of wearing them to hide their faces, making the mask the identifying feature instead of their face, some even forming gangs based on their masked identity. Since the ghouls are only identifiable by their masks, they are safe so long as their face is not exposed. Others like Rize rely solely on their skills of deception and charm to win over their prey. Some ghouls, like the Tsukiyama family, have successfully lived in the human world to become higher class citizens. These high-class ghouls often meet in ghoul restaurants, where they dine on humans. Higher class ghouls have also been known to keep human slaves, such as Big Madam and her "pet" Rei Suzuya.
Some ghouls prefer to live as hermits instead. Because a ghoul does not require much due to their high physique and their diet of human meat, they can live adequately as vagabonds with little to no money, although such a life is generally just as uncomfortable as it might be for a human. Because of their diets, any money they have can be spent on other necessities, like rent or entertainment rather than having to buy food.
Ghouls can pretend to eat food in order to fool other people into believing they are human. However, they must make themselves throw up soon afterward, or they will become sick. Because they can only consume human flesh, they are very territorial when it comes to, "hunting grounds" on which it is appropriate to hunt humans without notice. Human consumption depends on the ghoul, as some may prefer to be scavengers who only take from people who were recently deceased. Places such as Anteiku can provide human meat for these ghouls. Other ghouls may moderately hunt humans as carnivores with thoughts of appreciation for the lives they must consume, although there are ghouls who will indiscriminately devour as much as they can. Ghouls who indulge in excess have developed a superficial view on the value of life after consuming so many humans, much like how humans perceive livestock they grow and consume.
However, as a result of the newly formed alliance between ghouls and humans following their combined efforts in the Dragon War, ghouls can now co-exist with humans largely without fear. Their feeding needs are met by synthetic food developed in labs.
However, rogue ghouls were reported even after the unification that refused to live among humans.
Ghouls can smoke, as well as have allergies to metals, plastics, and other materials.
- #6Variantsselective
A one-eyed ghoul is a rare human-ghoul hybrid, either created artificially or naturally born between inter-species relationships. A Quinx is a variation of artificial one-eyed ghoul created by the CCG with restrained kakuhou through the use of quinque steel. An Oggai is another variation of artificially created one-eyed ghoul, also created by the CCG through the use of Rize Kamishiro's kakuhou. However, after the destruction of all 100 Oggai and the death of Rize Kamishiro, creating any more Kamishiro Oggai would be near impossible. When it come to human-ghoul hybrids naturally born hybrids are extremely rare because all die before they're born. Eto Yoshimura and Ichika Kaneki were born alive and healthy, and are two of the only known naturally born human-ghoul hybrids. The partners being human or ghoul determines how they must keep the child alive. If the mother is a human and the father is a ghoul, the mother needs to consume human flesh. If the mother is a ghoul and the father is a human, the mother needs to consume human food. Both are necessary to ensure nourishment or preservation of the child to allow the child to survive. Ukina and Touka both have proven it. Touka is expecting yet another child with Ken and that child will very likely be born hybrid too. A half-human is a human-ghoul hybrid born without ghoul abilities. A modified human is a human who was a failed one-eyed ghoul experiment by Dr Kanou that are often distorted, muscular, mentally disabled and lacking of ghoul abilities, they are often given out as scrappers. Although half-humans do not have ghoul abilites aside from a ghoul's physical strength they don't live very long. Arima confirmed that half-humans live up to 40 years. In their 30's some conditions common for people of old age manifest in half-humans. A kakuja is a ghoul whose Rc cells have mutated and developed an armor-like kagune through repeated cannibalism.
- #7Oggai Squadselective
Keys: Oggai, Oggai Squad
Oggai are stated to be made differently from the Quinx in a new and innovative process. They were created under the authority of newly-appointed bureau director Kichimura Washuu using Dr. Kanou's perfected kakuhou transplant surgery. As a new race of one-eyed ghouls, Oggai have the previously unheard of ability to choose either to activate one or two kakugan at once. It is estimated nearly a hundred individuals were produced, each enhanced to be superior trackers and adept ghoul exterminators. Kichimura compares them to Ken Kaneki, the original prototype on which they were all based.
- #8One-eyed ghoulselective
Keys: human-ghoul, hybrid, half-ghoul, one-eyed ghoul
A one-eyed ghoul, also called half-ghoul, is a human-ghoul hybrid who possesses a ghoul's abilities. Most ghouls treat their existence as an urban legend or have never heard of their existence at all
One-eyed ghouls earn their name from the single kakugan they possess, in contrast to normal ghouls. Some individuals are noted to have a unique scent that combines traits of a human and a ghoul, identifying them as different and often considered "enticing" by certain ghouls. Ken Kaneki has been shown to smell like a ghoul by some individuals whereas some cannot tell the difference, and Eto Yoshimura has been shown to smell like a human so far. It is unknown whether all hybrids have this trait. Their flesh and blood is also noted to be particularly delicious, making them a potential target for cannibalism.
hybrids are more powerful than ordinary ghouls due to hybrid vigor, though it has not been further elaborated on. Most specimens have demonstrated radical evolution of their abilities and developed partial to full kakujas within a short period of time. Physically, their bodies are identical to that of a ghoul with the same resistance to harm and ability to use a kagune. Dr. Shiba claims that the more half-ghouls and Quinx get hurt, the more their basic abilities will increase.
Artificial one-eyed ghouls can only consume flesh of human or ghoul origin like normal ghouls and thus they are strictly a cannibalistic organism. However, natural one-eyed ghouls like Eto are able to taste and consume human food without negative effects.
- #9One-eyed ghoul Originsselective
Keys: half-ghoul, artificial half-ghoul, one-eyed ghoul, transplant surgery, Artificial, Hybrids, Kakuhou transplant
Hybrids come into existence through two methods, either normally born as a result of the union between a ghoul and a human or an artificial half-ghoul, or through transplanting a kakuhou into a human host.
the chance of pregnancy is low, and even if the mother becomes pregnant, the child normally dies in the womb. Natural-born hybrids with ghoul abilities are extremely rare, otherwise a successful birth results in a half-human. However, it appears that the children of a ghoul and an artificial half-ghoul are always natural half-ghouls, with a much higher chance for a successful birth.
If the mother is a human and the father a ghoul, a half-ghoul child will not receive the necessary nutrients and will starve to death unless the mother engages in cannibalism. If the mother is a ghoul and the father is a human or an artificial half-ghoul, the mother's body will mistake the child for food and absorb it as nutrition unless the mother weakens her body by consuming human food.
Kakuhou transplant surgery: The primary method of creating one-eyed ghouls is through transplanting a kakuhou into a human or half-human recipient, an exceptionally high-risk procedure. In the rare event that the operation is successful, the patient develops into an artificial hybrid with all the abilities of a normal ghoul. This procedure was pioneered by Dr. Akihiro Kanou, with the first successful patient believed to be Ken Kaneki.
Dr. Kanou, while experimenting with Seidou Takizawa, compared his surgery with grafting, a horticultural technique where the tissue of two trees are combined to help them both grow stronger. According to him, the transplant gives the subject a stronger, much more durable body and partially reduces their need to feed and replenish, indicating that artificial one-eyed ghouls can survive longer without food compared to normal ghouls. Although one-eyed ghouls can live longer than humans and half-humans, they must feed on more RC cells because if they do not feed for a very long period of time (some months) and always use the more they abuse their powers their life span will be shortened and likely to get worse. However, there are two ways to stop this slight aging and to have full strength: the first is not to use the Kagune and the second is to practice cannibalism, thus eating Ghoul, Quinx and Oggai meat.
Individuals:
Natural: Eto Yoshimura (human mother, ghoul father) Underground King
Artificial: Ken Kaneki/Haise Sasaki (K-Eater) Kurona Yasuhisa (B-Eater, Floppy) Nashiro Yasuhisa † (W-Eater, Floppy) Kichimura Washuu †
Similar variants: Half-humans: Should a child be conceived from a ghoul father and a human mother, there are mostly likely to be born as half-humans and are far more common. They possess enhanced physical abilities but not the traits from their partial ghoul descent (i.e, lacking kagune, kakugan).
Quinx: After examining Dr. Kanou's surgery on Ken Kaneki, the CCG created an experimental squad consisting of humans with ghoul capabilities through implementing a kakuhou covered by quinque steel layers. While the Quinx are not considered as normal half-ghouls due to their lower Rc cell levels and the ability to eat human food, they are made from the concepts of Dr. Kanou's half-ghoul experiments.
Eto Yoshimura and Ichika Kaneki are the only confirmed natural-born half-ghouls. One-eyes ghouls, similar to quinx, become stronger the more they are hurt. Naturally born one eyed ghouls, have shown capable of eating human food unlike their artificially made counterparts. Fujishige Iba claims there was a scientist that wanted to experiment with hybridization, but his research was deemed unethical and shut down. Akihiro Kanou refers to the failures from his experiments as floppies, though it unclear what difference there may be between a floppy and an artificial one-eyed ghoul. However, it could be that they are not as strong as he hoped. This was shown when he compared the Yasuhisa twins to Kaneki he mentioned that they were not as strong as him thus they are failures, thus floppies. According to Eto, about a hundred years prior to the current timeline and events in the manga series, there existed a one-eyed ghoul so powerful that the ghoul's appearance led to the foundation of the CCG's predecessor organization. Kurona Yasuhisa and Kuki Urie have both demonstrated the ability to manifest kakugan in both eyes. It is unknown what causes this to occur, or what it means in relation to other artificial hybrids.
- #10Kaguneselective
Keys: kagune, Ghouls
A kagune is a ghoul's predatory organ and functions as their weapon and claws. It is usually as red as blood, flexible like the flow of water, but firm and sturdy. When released, a ghoul's physique is strengthened, they are more resilient, and their mobility heightens. A kagune is composed of Rc cells, which flow just like blood, can become as solid as teeth and can be described as "liquid muscles." The Rc cells are released from a kakuhou piercing the skin, and the released Rc cells form the kagune. The kagune are voluntary muscles as ghouls can control them whenever they want and repeatedly harden and soften them at will. Kagune size depends on the Rc cells' quality and quantity while the shape depends on the creativity and intellect of the user.
Although a ghoul's healing ability is high, the healing of wounds tends to be delayed if the wounds are inflicted by a kagune. It is also evident that in order to counter a kagune in battle, one must also have a kagune. Hence, ghoul investigators use kagune-based quinque as a tactical means to battle against ghouls.
- #11Half-humanselective
Keys: human-ghoul, half-human, hybrid
A half-human is a human-ghoul hybrid with mostly human-like traits. They are specimens with mixed blood from the copulation of a ghoul and a human.
Characteristics The characteristics of half-humans are closer to humans than ghouls. Like humans, they cannot manifest kagune nor kakugan and are able to consume normal food. However, they differ from humans in two traits:
Superhuman physical capabilities. Accelerated aging that causes a shortened lifespan. Because of these physical capabilities, Hairu Ihei was able to continue fighting after a heavy injury from being pierced through the abdomen. Due to the accelerated aging, Kishou Arima suffered from glaucoma, a well-known illness among the aged and elderly that slowly deteriorated his eyesight. Though half-humans lack a kagune, they register as ghouls when passing through the Rc Scan Gates.
Biological half-ghouls such as Eto Yoshimura are very rare among children of humans and ghouls, and the "failed" Sunlit Garden experiments are classified as "half-humans."
According to Souta Washuu-Furuta the majority of "half-humans" are illegitimate members of the Washuu Clan and the personnel of V.
Individuals All known half-human individuals hail from the Sunlit Garden, where they are bred for the purpose of hybridization in breeding experiments.

- #12Kakuhou transplant surgeryselective
Keys: transplant surgery, Kakuhou transplant surgery, Kakuhou transplant
The kakuhou transplant surgery is a medical procedure used to create artificial one-eyed ghouls. It was originally pioneered by Doctor Akihiro Kanou and involves removing the kakuhou from a ghoul and implanting it into a human or half-human patient.
History It is rumored that the Commission of Counter Ghoul originally discussed the idea of hybridization, but the idea was supposedly shelved due to ethical concerns.
Many years later, the idea of creating an artificial ghoul was revived by former CCG scientist Akihiro Kanou. To this end, he recruited Kurona and Nashiro Yasuhisa to become his first test subjects. Before performing the procedure on them, he needed to acquire a ghoul as the donor and decided to test the procedure on an unrelated patient. The Steel Beam Incident provided him with a suitable donor and patient, with Rize Kamishiro and Ken Kaneki becoming the initial pair used in his experiments.
In the aftermath of the surgery, Kanou monitored Kaneki at Kanou General Hospital until his release several weeks later. While continuing to perform check-ups on his prototype, Kanou went ahead with the surgery on the Yasuhisa twins and turned them into artificial one-eyed ghouls. He would continue to experiment with Rize as the donor.
After Rize was retrieved by Renji Yomo and his laboratory raided by the CCG, Kanou abandoned his prior research. Joining Aogiri Tree, he was soon provided with new materials for his experiments. Using Yoshimura as his donor,[5] he began to experiment using captured ghoul investigators as his test subjects. Only Seidou Takizawa and Koutarou Amon have been known to survive the transplant, the former being the only successful subject and the latter discarded as a failure.
Results The surgery is incredibly high-risk, with only three successes out of 1,200 total experiments using Rize (although it is unknown how many went through the Oggai procedure but it is known that it had 100 successful cases).[6] Many of those experimented on died as a direct result, with survivors becoming deformed creatures of limited intelligence. Several of these malformed creatures were given to Maiko Abe, who used them as Scrappers at the Ghoul Restaurant.
It is unknown how many subjects died during the experiments using Yoshimura, though only one "Owl" and a "Floppy" have been produced using sixty-three test subjects during nearly three years of experiments.[7] Kanou concedes that his ghoulification experiments have an extremely low percentage of success.[6]
- #13Quinx Surgeryselective
Keys: Quinx, Quinx Surgery
After examining Dr.
Doctor Kouitsu Chigyou developed the Quinx surgery as a safer alternative. Instead of directly implanting the kakuhou into a patient, the kakuhou is put through the same procedures used to make a quinque and then implanted with a five-tier system of quinque steel frames to regulate the kakuhou. This results in a weaker, but more stable subject that is able to use a ghoul's abilities while retaining their humanity.
The Quinx surgery is also much safer, using a measurable compatibility to determine suitable subjects prior to performing the surgery. This has resulted in consistent success in the creation of Quinx.

- #14Kakuhouselective
Keys: kakuhou, Ghouls · Secondary: Bikaku, rinkaku, ukaku, koukaku
A kakuhou is a sac-like organ that is only present in ghouls. The purpose of the kakuhou is to store Rc cells. The nutrition contained in the Rc cells are absorbed by the ghoul. These cells are transported to the kakuhou in the blood and stored inside.
The Rc cells can be released from the kakuhou piercing the skin either consciously or due to excitement. These released cells form the kagune. A damaged Kakuhou can not form a kagune until it has healed.
The kakuhou of a ghoul is used to build quinque.
A ghoul can have more than one kakuhou. In some cases, it seems that the stronger a ghoul becomes, their body develops more kakuhou, examples being with Yoshimura and Eto having 6–8, Yamori having 3, and Kaneki having an unspecified amount.
Location The location of the kakuhou depends on the ghoul's Rc type.
If the ghoul is an ukaku-type, the kakuhou is located at the shoulder area. If the ghoul is a koukaku-type, the kakuhou is located below the shoulder blade. If the ghoul is a rinkaku-type, the kakuhou is located on the back around the waist. If the ghoul is a bikaku-type, the kakuhou is located near the tailbone.
- #15RC cellsselective
Keys: RC, RC cells, Red Children
Rc (Red Children) cells are certain cells that exist only in the story of Tokyo Ghoul. The origin of the name comes from how each individual cell looks like a curled up fetus. They exist in both humans and ghouls. They flow like blood but can become as solid as teeth, and could be called "liquid muscles". Typically, a ghoul stocks Rc cells by eating people. Within the body, the Rc cells are concentrated and stored in a kakuhou. The kagune is formed by Rc cells that have been released from a kakuhou and have pierced through the skin.
Rc Factor and Level: The Rc factor is a measure for the amount of Rc cells in the body of a living being. Ghouls have an "Rc factor" ten times higher than humans. The average healthy human has an Rc factor of about 200 to 500, while a ghoul has an Rc factor of about 1000 to 8000. If, for whatever reason, a normal human receives an excessive amount of Rc cells, such as through experiments, they will start to develop ghoul-like characteristics and eventually not be able to consume human food.
Rc Cell Vessels: Rc cells flow through specialized Rc cell vessels. They spread from the kakuhou and permit the body to produce a kagune to the outside. The bodily capabilities can increase as much as the number of vessel increases. Vessels grow and spread throughout the body, stimulated through repeated injury and regeneration. Through this process, half-ghouls and quinx become stronger to the degree they're hurt.[3] It is unclear if normal ghouls can become stronger this way, too.
Rc cells are also vulnerable to genetic problems, a notable example being the Tsukiyama family's apparent inability to develop even a half-kakuja. And the blades making their kagune stronger but body weaker through breeding. Mutated and Rc cells in high counts can be genetically transferred as shown by the washuu being natural born kakuja's. Some humans suffer from a genetic disease called ROS, where the victim secretes an abnormal amount of Rc cells. Highly concentrated Rc cells can ignite and produce flames that are 4000°C (celsius) or form lightning-like projectiles. Possibly even more. Koutarou Amon has the highest recorded Rc level in the series at 10181, after being experimented on by Dr. Akihiro Kanou. They were referred to as some sort of mutant stem cell in re: chapter 151 In re: Chapter 131, Nishiki theorises that, if Rc cells were to divide the same way normal cells do, overusing them (i.e., excessively using kagune or healing from grievous wounds) would accelerate one's aging. However, since the main ghoul characters were shown to routinely use their kagune and heal from severe wounds, and have not displayed any sign of accelerated aging, it can be deduced that Rc cells do not divide the same way normal cells do.
- #16Rc typesselective
Keys: RC, RC types
The kagune's appearance and the place of emergence on the body depend on the Rc type of the ghoul. There are four different Rc types: ukaku, koukaku, rinkaku, and bikaku. As a guideline, each type can characteristically subdue another type, although it may be different for two specific opponents. Each Rc type has a set of strengths and weaknesses, each one unique to its type. These are exploited by the CCG in the creation of the quinque and Q bullets.
- #17Kagune Formationselective
Keys: Kagune Formation, kagune · Secondary: Ghouls
Formative stage At the point base of the kagune where the Rc cells erupt from the kakuhou, the erupted Rc cells will form bonds with each other. They will organize themselves in the structure best fit for their Rc type in a repeated web. This repeated action of the cells will occur instantaneously and lead to the next stage.
Fixative stage The bonded Rc cells will retain the resulted form for a fixed length of time. The basic shape of the kagune is seen at this stage. During this time, the defensive and offensive capabilities and weaknesses will take on their respective properties to the ghoul's Rc type. The manifested kagune's appearance is usually hereditary, taking on the shape and characteristics of their genetic predecessors, additionally, kagune size also depends on the Rc cells' quality and quantity while the shape depends on the creativity and intellect of the user. In relation to this stage is the user's manual control of the kagune's movement and actions, which can include crystallization and increase in length, dexterity, sharpness, and concentration.
Disintegrative stage After time has elapsed, the bonds between the cells begin to break apart. At this point, the kagune loses its solidity and deteriorates.

Keys: ukaku, kagune, ukaku kagune · Secondary: Ghouls
Ukaku An ukaku kagune is spread out like feathers and is released from the shoulder area, it specializes in high speed attacks, most of the users seeming to have highly enhanced speed. The kagune is lightweight and can be used to deliver high-speed attacks against an adversary, the primary method of attack is crystallizing their kagune to deliver a high speed torrent of spike-like projectiles, however whilst crystallized they are much stiffer and cannot be used for short range combat; at least one ukaku-type can generate powerful lightning-like bolts, a possible rare ability. While the kagune is suited both for short-distance and long-distance attacks, short-range is considered their weakness. They may use their kagune as a shield and several are capable of shaping them into sharp blades reminiscent of a koukaku to aid in close quarters. Many ukaku-types are able to increase the flexibility of their kagune for short-range combat, though this makes it ill-suited for their distinctive long-range attacks.
together ukaku-type ghouls have a high chance of ending a battle quickly as releasing Rc cells depletes stamina. Thus, ukaku-type users lack endurance and are at a disadvantage if the battle drags on for a long time. Ukaku-type users can use their speed and mobility to shoot down bikaku-type users from afar. However, a koukaku-type user can suppress an ukaku-type user by successfully guarding against the ukaku-type user's attacks, leaving them vulnerable to counterattacks and exhausting the ukaku-type user in the long run.
Known ukaku ghouls are: Shinsanpei Aura, Kazuichi Banjou, Fei, Shousei Idera, Kaya Irimi, Sumiharu Katou, Ayato Kirishima, Hikari Kirishima, Touka Kirishima, Kurei, Noyama, Ruchi, Shikorae, Ginshi Shirazu, Seidou Takizawa, Koutarou Amon, Koharu Utsumi, Renji Yomo, Yoshimura, and Eto Yoshimura.
- #19Koukakuselective
Keys: koukaku kagune, koukaku, kagune · Secondary: Ghouls
A koukaku kagune (甲赫, kōkaku, "shell-red") is released below the shoulder blade. Due to its high density of Rc cells, it is heavy and extremely robust, giving it the greatest sturdiness and making them very well suited for defense. Normally, they are generally shaped into armors or shields, but on the offense, they can be shaped like melee weapons such as drills, hammers, blades, and swords.
Due to its high weight, a koukaku's speed is inferior to all other Rc types and the kagune is difficult to wield
Known koukaku ghouls are: Uta (manga), Hinami Fueguchi, Ryouko Fueguchi, Ching-Li Hsiao, Arata Kirishima, Mairo, Matsumae, Ikuma Momochi, Naki, Nutcracker, Nutcracker's partner, Donato Porpora, Rou, Shikorae, Tanaka, Mirumo Tsukiyama, Shuu Tsukiyama, and Kuki Urie.
A koukaku can fend off an ukaku onslaught using its guarding capabilities. However, a rinkaku kagune can deliver severe strikes against the slow koukaku, breaking their kagune and breaching their defenses.
- #20Rinkakuselective
Keys: rinkaku kagune, rinkaku, kagune · Secondary: Ghouls
A rinkaku kagune (鱗赫, rinkaku, "scale-red") has an appearance similar to scaled tentacles and is released at the back around the waist. A rinkaku wielder has powerful regenerative abilities and some could even survive the most critical of damage. Its peculiar appearance and structure yields superior striking power and they excel in brute strength. Some rinkaku users are able to manipulate the shape of their kagune, such as changing its usual tentacle form into swords or claws.
This type's regenerative power is a result of the Rc cells easily binding together. Their Rc cells are similar to liquid. However, this means that the binding force among the Rc cells are weak, therefore making the kagune very soft and easy to break. But because their Rc cells bind so easily, some rinkaku can bind their multiple tentacle-like kagune together to make a larger, stronger kagune. So far the number of tentacles that rinkaku users can create are from one to eight tentacles.
A rinkaku kagune can deliver severe strikes against the slow koukaku, penetrating the kagune and breaching the koukaku's defenses. However, a rinkaku has serious problems fighting against the balanced bikaku kagune: A bikaku has comprehensively high power, allowing them to fight against the brute-force rinkaku, and the rinkaku kagune softness makes it comparatively easy for the bikaku to cut the kagune off. This disarms a rinkaku no matter how much strength it may possess, leaving the rinkaku at a disadvantage on the defensive. It has been shown that in some cases, a bikaku attack can disable a rinkaku's regeneration.[3]
Known rinkaku ghouls are: Yuuri Akanuma, Asa, Asaki Fueguchi, Hinami Fueguchi, Nimura Furuta, Hajime Hazuki, Hooguro, Rize Kamishiro, Ken Kaneki, Kinko, Kie Muramatsu, Yakumo Oomori, Rio, Rio's brother, Wobbegong, Kanae von Rosewald, Karao Saeki, Kurona Yasuhisa, Mayuzumi, Nashiro Yasuhisa, and Saiko Yonebayashi.
- #21Bikakuselective
Keys: Bikaku, bikaku kagune, kagune · Secondary: Ghouls
A bikaku kagune "tail-red" typically has a tail-like appearance and is released around the tail-bone/coccyx. It is good for medium-distance attacks and has decent offense, defense, and speed. Thus, they have no notable strengths or weaknesses like the kagune based on other Rc types, meaning the kagune itself is treated as a surprise "trump card." The number of tails a bikaku user can create is usually one, but some can create more.
A bikaku has better speed and durability against the brute-force, breakable rinkaku, allowing them to cut off the rinkaku's kagune. However, a bikaku will be overwhelmed by the faster ukaku-user and will lose against the ukaku's long-range attacks.
The balanced characteristics makes the kagune a preferred quinque type for inexperienced investigators.
Known bikaku ghouls are: Uta (anime), Big Madam, the Bin brothers, Cain, Demon Yamada, Touma Higemaru, Matasaka Kamishiro, Akashi Kobayashi, Enji Koma, Uruka Minami, Miza Kusakari, Tooru Mutsuki, Nishiki Nishio, Noro, Nutcracker, Shikorae, and Yumitsu Tomoe.

Keys: kakuhou, Shape-shifting, Pseudo-electrokinesis, RC explode, Cloning, rinkaku, ukaku, RC wave, Healing, Pseudo-pyrokinesis, Chimera, Rare abilities, RC laser, Rc wave and laser
In some cases, a ghoul's kagune can possess several unique abilities. While the kagune's basic structure itself is quite simple, the occurrences concurrent with these phenomena are unexplained, however they have been accredited to highly concentrated amounts of Rc cells.
Pseudo-electrokinesis The kagune while in use may be surrounded by a lightning-like aura, capable of generating electricity that can be utilized in an offensive and destructive manner. This is not a learned characteristic, but is hereditary, originating from the kakuhou. Note this ability may be passed onto a quinque, shown by Narukami and T-Human. This ability has only been shown in ukaku type ghouls.
The known ghouls able of this ability are Touka Kirishima and Renji Yomo. Hikari Kirishima is hinted to have this ability, as she is Touka’s mother and Yomo’s sister, and Narukami seemed to be created from her.
Pseudo-pyrokinesis Thus far, this has only been demonstrated by Tatara in kakuja form, however, the mutated Rc cells were able to generate heat and flames reaching 4000 degrees Celsius.
RC wave and laser The kagune/quinque will release a high amount of condensed RC cells and shoot them off in the form of a destructive wave or beam. The only ghoul shown to use this ability was the Taxidermied Owl. The quinque Higher Mind utilizes this ability as well.
RC explode This fires a one or several Kagune missiles and then explodes.
Known ghouls capable of RC exploding are: Ginshi Shirazu and Koutarou Amon.
Known Quinques capable of RC exploding are: Hollow and Zebizu.
Healing In both an ukaku and rinkaku ghoul this skill has been present, suggesting it may be an ability all Rc types are capable of. The wounded may be healed from injuries such as large fatal wounds to needing whole bones replaced. Whether they are another ghoul, human (albeit with added complications involving increased Rc factors), or the owner of the healing kagune, healing can be achieved within varying time parameters. Unlike electrokinesis, healing is not exclusively hereditary but can be learned like a skill which can be improved over time with experience, an example being Nico's experience healing humans, describing it as a "trick." Only Kazuichi Banjou and Nico have exhibited this ability.
Shape-shifting This ability to alter the user's appearance has only been shown by Uta and Roma Hoito, indicating its uniqueness.
It can be used to revert the physical appearance of the user back to how they looked in their younger years, as Roma used it to keep herself looking young.[6] The ability can also mimic the appearance of others well enough to fool even those familiar with the individual being mimicked. This includes creating detailed facial features and body structures to be realistic enough to function much like a real body, as shown by Uta.
Furthermore does the ability allow the user to alter the shape of the body as desired, as shown by Roma who morphed her hand into a clawed version of increased size.[6] The extend of how far the body can be altered by this method is unknown.
Cloning The exact mechanisms of this trait are unknown, but the only thing that is known is that upon the death of a clone, the person using the cloning ability has specific parts of their body disappear, can create one or more clones, can operate remotely and can fight.
Known ghouls capable of Cloning are: Uta and Donato Porpora.
Unique states Kakuja When ghouls repeatedly cannibalize other ghouls, they (rarely) develop an abnormal kagune apart from the common predatory kagune. This kagune typically takes an armor-like shape, and ghouls with such a kagune are called kakuja.
This abnormal transformation kagune also takes after the Rc types.
Known kakuja ghouls are: Ken Kaneki, Arata Kirishima, Yakumo Oomori, Seidou Takizawa, Kurona Yasuhisa, Underground King, Tatara, Yoshimura, Yan, Koutarou Amon, Noro, Eto Yoshimura, Roma Hoito, Uta, Rize Kamishiro, Daikichi Washuu, Yoshiu Washuu, Tsuneyoshi Washuu, Yoshitoki Washuu, Matsuri Washuu, Kichimura Washuu, and Shikorae.
Chimera When ghouls with different Rc types have children, there is a small chance they will inherit abilities from both parents and be born with a chimera kagune. This trait appears to be extremely rare, with only two known examples appearing in the series.
Known chimera ghouls are Hinami Fueguchi and Nutcracker.
Rc cell absorption A unique ability only observed in the ghoul Shikorae.
The exact mechanisms of this trait are unknown. The ghoul absorbs Rc cells from their environment, stores them in his body and is then able to release them at will. Allowing them to utilize all four types of kagune. Though, unlike a ghoul with a chimera kagune, they are unable to utilize more than one kagune type at once.
Such a ghoul has a chance to turn into a kakuja upon absorbing Rc cells from a Dragon Orphans
- #23Detachmentselective
Keys: Kagune Detachment, kagune · Secondary: Ghouls
Though the method has still not been explained, some ghouls possess a rare ability to detach part of their kagune. This detached piece maintains its traits for some time, and continues to function separate from the main body. Detachment can be used in several ways:
Kagune wall, which buries into the ground and sprouts like a thorn bush or other organic barriers. It extends itself to fill the entire area, making passage impossible. Kagune trap, which can be buried within any surface, and coils up on itself. These traps will lie in wait until nearby movement triggers them, bursting from their hiding place to impale what has set them off. It appears to be possible to set more than a half-dozen traps at a time, though the exact limitation is unknown. Kagune signal, which is able to transmit data similar to a distress signal. How the information is transferred as well as received is unknown, but a small piece of kagune can reveal the owner's location. It has only been shown to work one-way so far. Kagune bundle, this is the ability to use the detached pieces of their kagune to manipulate and restrain targets. Kagune Quinque, this uses the kagune to complete the form of damaged quinque. Advanced usage allows you to change the shape of the quinque. Kagune Detachment attack, this is the ability to detach kagune and have it slither across the ground on its own and attack. It is possible for ghouls to use their detached kagune in more destructive and offensive ways. For instance, Koutarou Amon uses the kagune from his arm to complete the form of his damaged quinque, Doujima 1/2.[8] Nico can create massive chain of detached parts to attack their enemies.[9] On the other hand, Eto and Donato Porpora have demonstrated the ability to use the detached pieces of their kagune to manipulate and restrain targets. Matsumae has shown the ability to detach pieces of her kagune and plant them into a wall, sprouting a kagune wall from them which makes passage impossible. While Roma Hoito has shown the ability to detach parts of her kagune to inform others of her location during imprisonment.
Other ghouls use a pseudo-form of detachment, were they break parts off of their kagune to use them as quinque-substitutes. These include Kurona Yasuhisa and Ken Kaneki to form sword-like weapons and Tooru Mutsuki to create knife-like kagune shards. This is no real form of detachment as the separated part of the kagune is no longer able to operate on its own, unlike the case with the normal form of detachment, were the kagune acts autonomous after being separated from their user.
Known Detachment ghouls are: Donato Porpora, Shinsanpei Aura, Eto Yoshimura, Koutarou Amon, Matsumae, Nico, Nutcracker, and Roma Hoito.

Mutsuki has developed a method of concealing RC levels within the body, causing standard methods of detection to fail. Dr. Shiba theorizes that this ability involves suppression of the RC cells, as blood tests gave back an impossible RC level of 3; even for humans, the average RC cell count is 200-500. As a result of this ability, CCG researchers are unable to make an accurate assessment of Mutsuki's physical condition.
Known ghouls capable of RC Control are: Tooru Mutsuki
- #27Kakujaselective
Keys: Kakuja powers, Kakuja, half-kakujas
A Kakuja is a kind of ghoul with a transformed kagune that clads the ghoul's body. Though it is rare, it can occur through repeated cannibalism. When a ward has a higher ghoul-to-human ratio, cannibalism is more common due to turf wars and limited food supply.
Sometimes, the transformation is incomplete, and such individuals are called half-kakujas
It is said that through cannibalism, a ghoul absorbs Rc cells, and this increases the concentration of Rc cells within a ghoul's body. If the concentration becomes high enough, it may trigger a mutation and lead to the formation of a new kagune.
A kakuja can further evolve by continuing to cannibalize their kind. For instance, while the One-Eyed Owl had a human-shape and size before its disappearance, it eventually developed into a much larger and more monstrous form during the Owl Suppression Operation in the 20th ward.
The transformation seems to be affected by psychological factors as Ken Kaneki's kakuja kagune takes the form of a centipede, resembling the Red-headed Chinese Centipede Yakumo Oomori used to torture Kaneki by putting it in his ear. In addition, Kaneki compares himself to Gregor Samsa, the protagonist of the novel The Metamorphosis who turned into an insect-like creature, all while picturing a centipede in his mind. Yoshimura's kakuja mask also grew to resemble the One-Eyed Owl's mask, with the former holding the desire to keep attention towards himself and away from the latter for personal reasons. It is explained by Eto that the size of a kagune is determined by rc quantity and quality while the shape of it is determined by imagination and creativity, which also applies to kakujas hence Kaneki's centipede and Yoshimura resembling a one eyed owl.
It should be noted that members of the Tsukiyama family have a birth defect where cannibalism has little to no chance of triggering this mutation in their Rc cells due to consanguineous marriages, thereby preventing kakuja mutations.
Apart from the predatory kagune ghouls commonly possess, a kakuja has a special kagune that clads the ghoul's body and functions like an armor. The kagune amplifies the kakuja's strength or diversifies their abilities, which makes fighting one of them especially hard.
However, using a kakuja kagune is nearly impossible because most users tend to lose their minds while fighting with it.It is unknown why some ghouls are able to remain sane and others are not. One reason may be that all unstable/insane ghouls using kakuja are half/incomplete as full kakuja are not observed to have any problems maintaining control.
It appears that a kakuja kagune can form a mask over the user's face if need be.
- #28Anteiku Futureselective
Anteiku was a small neighborhood cafe in the Tokyo Ghoul series.
On the surface, the cafe appeared innocent, plain, and pleasant. However, at its heart, it was also an organization of ghouls from the 20th ward. It provided aid for ghouls in need, managed the feeding grounds of those in the 20th ward, and collected food for others by searching for the bodies of humans who committed suicide.
Anteiku had two floors and a basement. The ground floor was the cafe itself, where the customers entered and the coffee was brewed. There was a storage space along with a meeting room on the upper floor. The basement was a hidden floor underneath the ground floor where human meat was stored. There was also an entrance to the 24th ward from here.
In the anime, the cafe's layout was depicted slightly different by having the entrance located on the ground floor connected to the main area with a flight of stairs leading to the upper floor where the cafe itself was located. One of the upper floors also contained living quarters for some Anteiku members, including Touka Kirishima and Hinami Fueguchi.
Due to its influence, the 20th ward was considered docile in comparison to other wards and had been neglected by the CCG.
By tacit agreement, the ghouls refrained from hunting human customers of the cafe.
During the Owl Suppression Operation, the cafe was destroyed and its remains were salvaged. Several former employees would go on to found a new cafe in another ward, known as :re.

In other language dubs it is often translated as a pun of "antique" because of their similar pronunciations and Yoshimura had stored a small antique coffee cup in a cupboard. Anteiku's resemblance to antique is almost certainly a reference to the cafe named "Antique" frequented by Yoshimura when he was known as Kuzen, where he met his eventual wife Ukina.[1] Anteiku can also be written as "安定区" in kanji, which literally means "peaceful ward" or "harmony zone". Anteiku is almost an anagram of "Ukina Eto", both the wife and daughter of Yoshimura

- #29Cannibalismselective
Keys: one-eyed ghouls, Eating ghouls, Cannibalism
Cannibalism is the act or practice of a species eating the flesh or internal organs of its own kind. In the story, scenes of ghouls eating ghouls and humans eating humans pass regularly as the narrative continues.
Strictly speaking, one-eyed ghouls (Artificial) always have to cannibalize since they are forced to eat human or ghoul meat. In their case, however, only eating ghoul meat is typically treated as cannibalism.
Ghoul meat tastes disgusting to ghouls, but in contrast to other non-human nutrition, they are able to digest it. Continued cannibalization may trigger a mutation in Rc cells, resulting in their turning into kakujas.
Effects on Ghouls If a ghoul engages in cannibalism, it absorbs the Rc cells of the cannibalized ghoul, thus increasing the concentration of Rc cells within the ghoul consuming them. If repeated often enough, there is a slight chance that this will trigger a mutation in the Rc cells of the ghoul and lead to the formation of a new armor-like kagune. Individuals with such a kagune are called kakujas, whereas this special kagune itself is referred to as a kakuja kagune. Using a kakuja kagune increases a ghoul's power substantially.
However, kakuja ghouls who use their kakuja kagune often go insane.[3] It is unknown why some ghouls are able to remain sane and others are not, although it appears to be related to the completion level of their kakuja kagune; those with a complete kakuja kagune were all shown to be sane, and Ken Kaneki was able to retain his sanity while using his complete kakuja kagune (whereas previously, he went insane while using his incomplete one).

Masks are worn by ghouls to prevent their identities as "Human" from being discovered by the CCG. Several masks bear a symbolic attachment or representation to their owner. They heavily influence the alias of some ghouls filed under by the CCG.
Trivia Most of the ghouls of the 20th ward wear masks made by Uta, who owns the HySy ArtMask Studio.
- #31Quinqueselective
Keys: investigators, Quinque, CCG
A quinque is a weapon manufactured from a ghoul's kakuhou used by CCG ghoul investigators. Invented by Adam Gehner and Yoshiu Washuu, the quinque emits electrical signals that stimulate the kakuhou to release and control it. They can be made into some type of melee or ranged weapon, but most retain a few characteristics from the original kagune. In contrast to kagune, quinque cannot change shape nor store or absorb Rc cells other than what was harvested from the ghoul it was made from.
Preceding the quinque, the CCG had been using firearms to combat ghouls and needing a more efficient tool, they began intensive research that resulted in its creation. Made solely to exterminate ghouls, quinque were considered the new generation of technology, promptly and effectively raising the extermination rate. Ghoul investigators transport them in bags or suitcases to store the kakuhou. Some investigators are known to collect quinque and others aspire to master their use. To attain a quinque, an investigator must first confirm their target's Rc type before exterminating them. Afterwards, it is common to name the quinque from the ghoul's name or alias (e.g., Noyama).
- #32Special Quinque Typesselective
Keys: Kakuja Quinque, Chimera Quinque
Chimera Quinque: In rare cases, a quinque can also be fused from ghouls with chimera kagune, or multiple kagunes. The most notable of these chimeras belongs to Akira Mado named Amatsu, it functions with combined koukaku and bikaku styles as one effective weapon. It can also be made possible when the ghoul in question naturally possesses two Rc types, as in the cases of Nutcracker and Hinami Fueguchi.
Chimera quinque are useful for opposing multiple types of ghouls, though it is unknown if any combination of Rc types is possible or can occur naturally as chimera ghouls are extremely rare and the technical difficulties of fusing two Rc types together means that very few are capable of being used in the field.
Kakuja Quinque: Kakuja quinques are a special type of quinque created from ghouls that have cannibalized and evolved a mutated kagune, becoming a kakuja. It has been commonly shown to function as armor; protecting and enhancing the capabilities of the user by stimulating their body while equipped.
So far, it seems to not be sustainable for long since the quinque comes with the drawback of slowly biting into its user the longer it is maintained and feeds off the wearer's vigor in order to conserve energy.
Despite the vast majority of kakuja quinques taking the form of armor, there have been several instances in which kakuja quinques have taken more offensive forms such as blades. Aside from being potent melee weapons, these quinques retain special traits of the original kakuja, such as ranged projectiles, detachment, advanced kagune formation, and remote activation.
The majority of known kakuja quinques were harvested from the kagune of Arata Kirishima and used by Yukinori Shinohara, Iwao Kuroiwa, Koutarou Amon, Hanbee Abara, and Juuzou Suzuya. There are several exceptions, including Owl, which was harvested from the kakuhou of Yoshimura and used by Kishou Arima, and Ginkui, which was harvested from the kakuhou of Noro and used by Kuki Urie.
Trivia: It appears that a certain type of quinque is edible for ghouls, as seen when a rampaging Ken Kaneki devours Yukinori Shinohara's Arata without any ill side-effects afterward. If the same can be said about the non-armor types is unknown at the time being.
- #33Quinxselective
Keys: one-eyed ghoul, Quinx, half-human
A Quinx is a human or half-human with a restrained kakuhou installed in their body. Since Quinx are able to produce a kagune, they can potentially be mistaken for ghouls and one-eyed ghouls.
Characteristics: Quinx are similar to one-eyed ghouls in that they only develop one kakugan, in contrast to normal ghouls who develop kakugan in both eyes. When activating the kakugan, the Quinx have a grey sclera in the affected eye instead of black like normal and one-eyed ghouls. Quinx only digest human food and they do not crave human flesh like half-ghouls and normal ghouls do. Even so, devouring human flesh still triggers responses from their Rc cells, increasing the overall abilities of a Quinx.
Quinx are shown to possess increased physical traits similar to those of ghouls, such as enhanced strength and agility, though this appears to vary greatly from individual to individual. A heightened sense (i.e, smell, hearing, sight) is typical, and healing abilities on par with those of a ghoul are possible side effects of the surgery. Dr. Shiba claims that the more half-ghouls and Quinx get hurt, the more their bodies are filled with Rc cells and thus their basic abilities will increase.[1]
The Quinx surgery was created after Ken Kaneki was examined by the CCG after his capture.
Quinque Frames The kakuhou that is installed into the body of the Quinx are modified through a process similar to the method used to create quinques, believed to make them safer and seemingly allows the kakuhou to adapt to the new host. This method involves coating the kakuhou in quinque steel, and then implanting it with a special system of "frames" to regulate function and acts as a system of control. There are a total of five frames, with each subsequent frame increasing or decreasing the potential output of the kakuhou by 20%. This process limits the potential strength of their kagune and restricts its form as compared to the highly-adaptable kagune used by normal ghouls. As in the CCG, Quinx may petition their superiors to undergo the frame release surgery.
The kakuhou of all members of the Quinx Squad are initially set to F2, the second frame, giving them 40% of a ghoul's potential power. Currently, only Urie had undergone Frame release surgery to proceed into the continuing frames after gaining approval from Director Yoshitoki Washuu. The second batch of the Quinx Squad appear to have the ability to shift between the F2, F3, and F4 frames for set times when demanded.[2]
Although the frames are essential to regulate the flow of Rc cells in a Quinx's body, they are not entirely fail-proof. In cases of extreme physical stress, the five frames coating the kakuhou can break, releasing a high concentration of Rc cells on the subject's bloodstream and fully releasing their kagune. This occurrence is known among the CCG as "Frameless" or "F5." In the event a Quinx's frames were to break, they are to be considered S-rated ghouls and ought to be subject to immediate extermination.
Only two individuals were known to have their frames broken: Former Squad Leader of the first generation of the Qs Ginshi Shirazu, and current Squad Leader for the second Quinx Squad Kuki Urie.
Individuals First Batch Kuki Urie Saiko Yonebayashi Tooru Mutsuki Ginshi Shirazu † Second Batch Shinsanpei Aura Touma Higemaru Ching-Li Hsiao Third Batch Suzu Sanzu Ryuusen Tatsumichi Kanou's Surgery Okahira Numerous unnamed Quinx Trivia According to Dr. Shiba, the starting point for the Quinx, in terms of kakuhou regulation, allow for 40% of the kakuhou's potential output. Their frames start at F2 (frame 2), but there are experimental operations available to have it opened up more, though it is considered risky.[3] Dr. Shiba theorizes the Quinx are able to eat human food as long as their Rc levels remain below 1000, the minimal level for a normal ghoul. It is unknown what would happen should they exceed this threshold.[4] Quinx, similar to half-ghouls, become stronger the more they are hurt. According to Urie, Rank 3 Investigators who rampage with their kagune will be exterminated.[4] The process of coating the kakuhou in quinque steel may be to prevent the implant from converting the implanted individual into a one-eyed ghoul by restricting contact with native tissues. According to Urie, the reason Quinx are expected to become as strong as Arima is so they can stop Haise Sasaki if he one day loses control of himself. It is also mentioned by Urie that if the rare chance of one of the Quinx members becoming "framed out" takes place, they will be treated as an S-rated ghoul and will be exterminated.[5] In the anime, the Quinx appear to have black sclera instead of the grey shown and described in the manga.

Q bullets are bullets with a melted-down kagune coating; however, because the material can only be acquired from ghouls, the coating itself is moderately thin. There is a bullet type for each respective kagune. They are adequate when used against a ghoul whose kagune type adversely corresponds with that of the bullets'. While Q bullets are effective in their own right, this effectiveness only extends so far when compared to a quinque.
Q bullets are typically used by bureau investigators.

Ratings are a system used by the Commission of Counter Ghoul to classify ghouls according to their perceived individual ability and threat level.
Ghouls are rated based upon various factors, including their basic strengths, activity levels, influence, and hostility towards investigators. In modern-day, there are six rating levels, from SSS (the most powerful) to C (the weakest). In some cases, a tilde (~) is added to the base rating. This indicates that the ghoul is estimated to be at least that strong, but the rating may change once more is known about the subject.
Originally, ghouls were designated degrees, the CCG converted from this system to using the degrees' rating equivalents — e.g. a "special third degree" (特三度, Toku san do) threat became an "SSS" rated ghoul.
Rating Assessment Criteria The rating of a ghoul is set through evaluation of the ghoul's individual ability. The following criteria are employed to determine the rating according to their individual ability:
SSS rated: The criteria are unclear.
SS rated: Multiple Special Class Investigators are needed.
S+ rated: Equivalent to the ability of an average Special Class Investigator. (approx.)
S- rated: Equivalent to the ability of an average Associate Special Class Investigator. (approx.)
A rated: Comparable to a First Class Investigator. These ghouls are usually set as a target and some ghouls might develop a second tail/tentacle.
B rated: Comparable to a Rank 1 to Rank 3 Investigator. These ghouls should have their Kagune mastered and are usually a small threat to the CCG.
C rated: Ghouls of smaller ability, these ghouls usually can't fight any ghoul investigators and only attack unarmed humans. In addition to the ghoul's individual ability, the actual damage caused by the ghoul is also evaluated. The rating is set in consideration of the predation and killing incidents committed by the ghoul.
For some ghouls, their influence over other ghouls is also taken into account when ratings are given.
Known Ratings: Ratings are listed according to the last formally disclosed in canon, current or otherwise.

Keys: CCG, Commission of Counter Ghoul, C.C.G, Ghoul Countermeasures Bureau
The Commission of Counter Ghoul [sic] "Ghoul Countermeasures Bureau", usually abbreviated as C.C.G, was a federal agency in the Tokyo Ghoul series that serves as a criminal investigative body in cases connected to ghouls.
The Ghoul Countermeasures Law was the legal foundation for the CCG's prosecution of ghouls. The CCG's headquarters are in the 1st ward.
The ghouls commonly call the ghoul investigators Doves a nickname originating from the CCG's seal.
Currently, the office of Chairman is vacant. The CCG's former Chairman was Tsuneyoshi Washuu until his death. The Bureau Director title was held by his son, Yoshitoki Washuu, however after his death, the position was given to Kichimura Washuu. After the creation of Dragon, Kichimura has resigned from his position, leaving the spot of Bureau Director vacant.
The CCG was dissolved after the Dragon War and was replaced by the TSC.
History: The Ghoul Countermeasures Office, the predecessor of the CCG, was founded in 1890 as a state agency and was first led by Daikichi Washuu, then head of the Washuu Clan. Eto Yoshimura claimed that the CCG's parent organization was founded over 100 years ago to counter a one-eyed ghoul. This unique ghoul was so powerful that humans needed to cooperate in order to exterminate it.
Initially, the CCG utilized firearms to oppose ghouls, which proved ineffective due to their physique. After a certain period of time, the organization, under the then Chairman Yoshiu Washuu's leadership, developed a new weapon to battle ghouls, the quinque, which was derived from the ghouls' kagune. The ghoul extermination rate increased rapidly thanks to that weapon, and it is still the desired weapon of choice to the investigators.

- #39RC suppressantsselective
Keys: ROS, drugs, RC suppressants
Rc suppressants are the drugs used to suppress the activity of the kakuhou. They were specially made by the CCG's Medical Department, designed for the sole purpose of inhibiting the activity of a ghoul's RC cells. However, they can also be applied to humans as well since it is the only known treatment for Rc cell over-secretion disease (ROS). While available to the general public for this purpose, their cost makes them nearly impossible for most to afford. However, it is only made available for distribution by special affiliates of and from the CCG.
Characteristics: Mostly seen in fluid form, in a solid light color. While in fluid form, they are also flammable, similar to that of gasoline.[citation needed] They are usually stored in tubular containers, in an airtight and sterile environment. In a liquid state, Rc suppressants carry a distinct odor. To a ghoul, it is described as a unforgettable pungent odor that fills the nostrils.
Administration: The drug can be administered via three known methods: a syringe, bullet, or quinque.
When injected in fluid form, Rc suppressants are usually delivered via a hypodermic needle into the muscle. Upon injection, the drug is absorbed fairly quickly, a trait usually attributed to a drug's unknown chemicals. For Rc suppressants, ingredients include an Rc solution. Injected drugs are usually preferred as they allow the full effects of a drug to be experienced.
When Rc suppressants are delivered otherwise, the bullet or quinque had been coated in the drug, working similar to a poison dart.
Effects The effects to ghouls include slower regeneration, kagune impairment — even the capability of preventing its use at all — and vulnerability to mundane items such as knives; grogginess has been observed but it is unconfirmed to be either an intended symptom or a common side effect. When Rc cell activity is suppressed, it may cause an increase in melanin production that causes changes in hair color. The effects of Rc suppressants do eventually wear off, but the specific time before this occurs is unknown.
Uses The CCG uses Rc suppressants as a means to subdue a ghoul rather than to exterminate. Cochlea uses it for their ghoul prisoners, to weaken them for interrogation and/or as a measure for caution. Another known use which takes advantage of the ghoul's newfound vulnerability is for surgery or dissection.
- #40RC cell over-secretion diseaseselective
Keys: ROS, RC cell over-secretion disease · Secondary: disease
Rc cell over-secretion disease is a rare chronic disease that affects humans with a morbidity rate of one in every 1-3 million people. ROS occurs when the minuscule number of RC cells already in the human body begin to excessively secrete out of control. In other words they begin to be overproduced and discharged from the body at an alarming rate. It is unknown if ROS is a hereditary or an acquired disease, including if it is terminal or not. Although people have acquired the disease via gasses containing excess RC cells despite being healthy beforehand, until after peace between Ghouls and Humans, there was no known cure for the disease, and it could only be managed with RC suppressants.
At the end of the series, however, a cure was discovered and presumably administered to most of the citizens and ghouls.
Symptoms: The disease primarily causes kagune-like growths, similar to a tumor or cyst. They are small and itchy in the beginning, but will continue to grow to an enormous size over time. Other severe symptoms of the disease include:
Nausea Intense pain Memory alteration Degradation of the five senses Regression of nerves into a child-like mental state
Victims: Haru Shirazu (cured) Saiko Yonebayashi (cured) Numerous unnamed citizens of Tokyo (following exposure to Dragon) (most likely also cured)

Cochlea was a ghoul detention center located in the 23rd ward owned by the CCG. Captured ghouls get detained here after the decision is made to keep them alive, either for information, quinque materials, or any other exceptional need from them. While in custody, ghouls are also weakened by RC suppressants.
History: Cochlea was built at an unknown date to imprison ghouls who were used for information or materials to make quinque. The One-Eyed Owl attacked the facility and freed many ghouls. Ten years later, Aogiri Tree attacked the detention center and freed several of the imprisoned ghouls, but they were unable to reach beyond the SS level.
Cochlea's defenses were improved after the Aogiri Tree's break-in, to the degree Tatara firmly believed it was impossible to breach again.
Structure: The cochlea is a long building that is wide open at the top, which makes it possible to see the sky inside. While the path is only in the surroundings near the ghouls' isolated jails, the center is a deep fall. The structure's walls are coated with quinque steel to help keep ghouls secured within.
The building is divided into many deep floors:
First Floor: Designated floor to imprison the lower-rated ghouls.

The Control Rc gas grenade, abbreviated as CRc gas, is an experimental weapon made by the CCG. Upon activation, the grenade releases CRc gas, when inhaled it begins to affect the respiratory system and mucous membranes. If Rc cells are activated at that moment, it impairs the ghoul's kagune and causes it to break down. However, Kakuja Kagune appear to be immune, likely due to their mutated nature. Moreover, the gas doesn't affect a ghoul's enhanced physical abilities.
Trivia: When it was first shown, the CRc gas grenade was still in its prototype form, but was said to work well. Dr. Chigyou is in charge of the grenade's development. Akira Mado was tasked with testing the prototype and reporting the results.

Anteiku was a small neighborhood cafe shop.
Anteiku had two floors and a basement, the cafe's layout having the entrance located on the ground floor connected to the main area with a flight of stairs leading to the upper floor where the cafe itself was located. One of the upper floors also contained living quarters/meeting room for some Anteiku members, including Touka Kirishima and Hinami Fueguchi. There was a storage space along with a meeting room on the upper floor. The basement was a hidden floor underneath the ground floor where human meat was stored. There was also an entrance to the 24th ward from there
Due to its influence, the 20th ward was considered docile in comparison to other wards and had been neglected by the CCG.
By tacit agreement, the ghouls refrained from hunting human customers of the cafe.
During the Owl Suppression Operation, the cafe was destroyed and its remains were salvaged. Several former employees would go on to found a new cafe in another ward, known as :re.

"Aogiri Tree exists to create a good world for us ghouls, a world in which ghouls can live openly and freely. Our enemy are the Doves of the C.C.G. However, eradicating the warped root that lurks behind all of this is my true aim." — Eto Yoshimura
Aogiri Tree was a ghoul terrorist organization founded by Eto Yoshimura. They actively combated the C.C.G, inflicting heavy casualties on them. In recent years, the organization had grown in power, becoming a large threat to the C.C.G and developed a notorious reputation among ghouls, and was one of the C.C.G's most pressing priorities.
Organization: The organization had its roots in the 24th Ward and was founded by Eto after she and her small band of ghouls were defeated by the C.C.G 13 years prior. Because of that, Aogiri had structural similarities with the first organization, as stated by several C.C.G investigators. Aogiri was stated to be commanded by the mysterious One-Eyed King, a figure surrounded by rumor and unseen by all but its direct subordinates. Many believed the One-Eyed Owl was the King, but Eto stated that was not the case. Despite being the organization's founder, Eto often acted behind the scenes and was shrouded in mystery to most, even amongst some of her own members. Tatara, a direct subordinate of the King, served as the operational leader of the organization, meeting with members and giving out orders to subordinates. Noro was another direct subordinate of the King but was usually only deployed into combat to quickly dispatch multiple enemies.
Eto once explained the origin of the group as she led a small band of ghouls in a raid against the C.C.G. In the end, most were killed and her arms were taken by a muscular youth with thick eyebrows. She then brings up the previous year, when a similar thing happened. She claims that she was overconfident and, being taught a lesson, decided to form Aogiri. Today they have several thousand members but their goal remains the same. According to her, Aogiri Tree exists to create a good world for ghouls. Her true aim is to eradicate the warped root behind C.C.G and requests the assembly participants to become foundation of the destruction of the birdcage.
Beneath Tatara were several executives, powerful ghouls who served as captains for the organization and led their own forces. They were responsible for much of the daily managing of the organization, such as gathering food and overseeing missions. Each executive had their own direct subordinates, some of which formed into distinct gangs of their own, such as the White Suits. Lower ranked members dressed in matching robes and masks, and carried out minor tasks, such as information gathering, scouting, and guard duty, or even kitchen duty.
Aogiri actively seeked out new members with each new territory they controlled. During the occupation of the 11th ward, numerous weak ghouls were conscripted into the organization and used for menial slave labor, and in the break-in at Cochlea, Aogiri recruited several A to SS-rated ghouls, one notably Shachi. After the fall of Anteiku, Aogiri expanded its influence and forced ghouls living within human society to work for them. These ghouls were responsible for gathering information, or carrying out other minor tasks their human identities made them uniquely suited towards. Should these ghouls have be discovered, Aogiri would recruit them fully into their ranks as new soldiers.
During the Rushima Landing Operation, the organization suffered a loss of approximately 98% of its remaining members. Though a small number of prominent members escaped, the C.C.G has designated the organization exterminated. However, Tatara and Eto had intended for Aogiri Tree to be completely decimated. The surviving 2% of its members evacuated and became members of the organization Goat established by their founder Eto's designated successor to the title of One-Eyed King: Ken Kaneki.
Locations: Aogiri Tree had multiple locations under their control, though the exact specifics such as the scale are currently unknown.
11th Ward: There used to be a prominent Aogiri hideout in the 11th ward, under the supervision of Tatara and several executives such as Ayato, Yamori, and the Bin brothers. The hideout was destroyed after the CCG carried out the Aogiri Raid Operation, their location unintentionally leaked by Yamori through Hideyoshi's hobby of playing detective.
18th Ward The Aogiri executive Miza was the current leader of the 18th ward, thus was technically under the Aogiri Tree's jurisdiction as well. There seemed to be a decent amount of Aogiri activity in the area.
Rushima Aogiri had established a base of operations on Rushima, an uninhabited island in Tokyo Bay formerly used as a military base during World War II. The CCG was poised to destroy the organization and Aogiri made a final stand against them.

Aogiri sought to make ghouls the dominant species and planned to overthrow humanity and ascend to power. Rize Kamishiro had been hunted down and tracked by several Aogiri executives and members for an unknown purpose. It was stated by Nico that Aogiri, in the words of Tatara, wanted to obtain Rize and Dr. Kanou "to flush out a liar."
Aogiri's goals seemed to align with Dr. Kanou's, as he himself stated, and that cooperation was mutually beneficial to them. Eto adopted his "birdcage" parallel and stated Aogiri's purpose was to destroy this "birdcage" and restore balance to the world. The organization had provided him with advanced facilities and the subjects to continue his research into creating artificial one-eyed ghouls.
Strength: As an organization of ghouls, Aogiri Tree was considerably powerful. CCG had stated that Aogiri was one of the greatest ghoul threats to have surfaced in recent years. In terms of manpower, Eto mentioned the organization had several thousand ghouls in their ranks,[1] the majority of low-ranked members were B-rated or below. The upper chain of command consisted of many ghouls S-rated or higher like Miza, Ayato, Tatara, Takizawa and Naki with his White Suits, a further testament to the organization's strength.
After the Tsukiyama Extermination Operation, the intensive crackdown on their operations by the CCG significantly weakened Aogiri. But they managed to remain as one of the most powerful ghoul organization opposing the CCG.
However, following the conclusion of the Rushima Landing Operation, they lost the majority of their members as well as Tatara. With no leader and almost no members, Aogiri Tree ceased to be a threat.

- #46Anti-Aogiriselective
Anti-Aogiri (反アオギリ, Han aogiri) was a group of ghouls under Kazuichi Banjou's leadership who planned to escape from their imprisonment by Aogiri Tree.
Formation After Ken Kaneki had been captured by Aogiri Tree, Banjou invited Kaneki to Anti-Aogiri's formation meeting. The goal of Anti-Aogiri was the escape from the 11th Ward Base. They planned to escape on the day when Noro, Ayato Kirishima and Yamori would be absent from the hideout.[1]
Banjou planned the escape because he had determined that he and his comrades were no longer of any value to Aogiri. Thus, he feared for the lives of his comrades and concluded that he had to help them escape from the hideout before Aogiri would kill them.[2]
Escape Attempt On the night Noro, Ayato Kirishima and Yamori were supposed to be absent from the hideout, the group tried to escape from the Aogiri hideout. During their escape attempt, they ran into a scout. The scout alerted the Bin brothers, who began to pursue the group. Banjou, Ichimi, Jiro, Sante and Kaneki stayed behind to face the Bin brothers, while the others continued to escape.[3] However, Yamori, who had known about the escape attempt in advance thanks to Nico overhearing their plans, ambushed the other escapees, killing Moku and Tetsu.
Yamori proposed a deal to Kaneki: If Kaneki were to become his underling, he would let the others go. Kaneki, fearing for the others, accepted the deal and went with Yamori.[4]
However, Yamori did not keep his side of the deal. He imprisoned the other members of Anti-Aogiri and killed Kei and Kouto before Kaneki's eyes while he was torturing Kaneki.[5][6]
Disbandment After Kaneki had defeated Yamori, he freed Banjou, Ichimi, Jiro, Sante and Usu.[7] After their successful escape from the hideout, Banjou, Ichimi, Jiro and Sante joined Kaneki in his quest for answers and became members of his group. Although injured, Usu survived. But, his fate after the escape from the hideout is unknown.[8]
Members Except for Kaneki, all of Anti-Aogiri's members are former residents of the 11th ward and already followed Banjou when he was still the leader of the ward.

The Clowns were a group of ghouls with a mysterious goal or purpose. Its members primarily wore clown-themed masks and stated their intentions were to "have the last laugh." The CCG had planned a famous investigation on them in the 3rd ward, as mentioned in Hisashi Ogura's New Book of Ghoul Dismantling read by Hideyoshi Nagachika.
There was no data on their member amount, activity area, nor goals in the CCG database. It was stated that the Clowns did not usually group up, but when they did, they demonstrated exceptional teamwork. Kuramoto Itou noted that they were considered ghouls that ghoul investigators would rather not encounter.
The group was mentioned throughout the series, but were revealed at the finale to having been involved in numerous pivotal events.
Members: Roma Hoito (Gypsy / The Dodgy Mother) † - Founder Itori Nico (Big Sister) Donato Porpora (Priest / Crown) † Shikorae (Defected) Uta (No Face) Kichimura Washuu (Souta / PG / Washuu King) † Ganbo † Numerous unnamed members Associates Akihiro Kanou † - Souta V (Formerly) Kaiko † - Souta Aogiri Tree (Formerly) Yakumo Oomori (Jason) † - Nico History The Clown group has had a long history well known in the public as the CCG spent quite some time on their investigation and eradication plan. Kishou Arima, Take Hirako, and Kousuke Houji are some CCG members that were involved in the battle against them.
At an unspecified time before the main story began, the CCG attempted an extermination mission to sweep up the Clowns who were mainly located in the 3rd ward. While the operation failed to wipe out all Clowns, it was a success on most parts; the operation success is said to be a close call even with Arima taking part of it.
Key Events The group have been involved in numerous key events through the series, either as individuals or working in conjunction with other members.
Steel Beam Incident - (Souta) Kaneki at the Ghoul Restaurant - (Itori) Kaneki's capture by Aogiri and torture by Yamori - (Nico) Search for Kanou's Lab - (Itori and Nico) Auction Mopping-up Operation - (Uta, Roma, and Ganbo) Third Cochlea Raid - (Furuta, Uta, and Donato) Rushima Landing Operation - (Roma and Shikorae) Washuu Clan Ambush Incident - (Furuta, Uta, and Donato) Clown Siege - (Furuta, Donato, Uta and Nico) Furuta's Integrity Enquiry - (Furuta, Roma, Shikorae) Goat Wipeout Operation - (Furuta) Defense of Tokyo - (Donato, Nico, Itori, Uta, Souta)
Trivia: Yamori mentions that the Clowns group was rising in power during his time in Cochlea. On the Cochlea ghoul escapee list Kaneki gave Itori, there is a SS-rated Clown. Of the three SS escapees, one is shown to be a brown-haired woman who is Roma when she was younger. All major ghoul organizations within the series had at least one Clown either associating with or joining them. Uta, Itori, and Roma were all associated with Anteiku. Nico associated with Aogiri Tree for a time, while Souta was a member of the Gourmet Restaurant in the 7th ward as well as the CCG, V, and the Sunlit Garden. The Clowns were also involved in Ghoul Restaurant's Auction. Quote "No point in living if things aren't interesting. The ones who get the last laugh are us, the Clowns." "The Clowns are ghouls of surprise. All of us." —Nico "Bearing witness to the moment of their destruction... Wouldn't that be just divine? We'll watch the whole thing from the best seats in the house. Watch as the curtain falls. Was there ever a time in the past when Ghoul-kind was backed so far into a corner? I wonder..." —Itori

Keys: investigator, Doves, ghoul investigator
A ghoul investigator is a specially trained professional employed by the Commission of Counter Ghoul. Most are stationed at the CCG Main Office in the 1st ward but many are occasionally granted authority of investigations in one of Tokyo's other wards. They are tasked with the investigation, pacification, and elimination of ghouls to protect the civilians of Japan from any potential harm caused by ghouls. During their investigations, they analyze crime scenes for traces of ghoul perpetrators, expose their identities, and incapacitate or neutralize them.
Ghouls refer to them as Doves
Education: Usually, ghoul investigators were instructed at and graduated from the CCG's Ghoul Investigator Training Academy. When they enter the CCG, they begin their career as Rank 2 investigators.[1]
Rarely, ghoul investigators are employed even though they did not graduate from the Training Academy. These investigators are admitted by order of the CCG's chairman, Tsuneyoshi Washuu, and begin their career as a Rank 3 investigator. Known cases are Kishou Arima, Juuzou Suzuya, Haise Sasaki, Tooru Mutsuki, Saiko Yonebayashi, Ginshi Shirazu, and Touma Higemaru.
New ghoul investigators are typically partnered with a senior investigator or join a squad to continue their training on the job.
Equipmen: Since the investigators as humans lack the physique, stamina, and strength to manually handle ghouls in combat, they are compelled to use tactical, man-made weapons. Only ghoul investigators are permitted to be armed with quinques, the most effective weapons against ghouls made from a ghoul's kakuhou. Additionally, they are sometimes armed with firearms loaded with Q bullets ammunition.
Procedures: In compliance with the Ghoul Countermeasures Law, ghoul investigators must be constantly vigilant. After a crime scene has been found, ghoul investigators function like modern investigative law enforcement. Using the clues that remain at crime scenes, they can distinguish certain characteristics about their targeted ghoul. They analyze helpful clues, like footprints and clothing fibers, to more reliable ones, such as body fluids, hair, kagune secretions, and kagune markings. The ghoul responsible will be referred to by either a number (e.g, "Number 696") or an alias (e.g, "Rabbit"), and contain their information in numbered files (e.g, 150919-27004). It will contain general information such as the targeted ghoul's habits, areas of predation, activity frequency, and preferred victims. It will also contain more specific information such as possible/confirmed relatives, previous run-ins with the ghoul, and any capabilities or strengths asserted after.
Depending on the potential threat level of the ghoul, if the target is lower ranked, it can be pursued by a set of or a partnership including senior investigators, or a lower-ranked squad, but should the ghoul be deemed as dangerous, only skilled high-ranked investigators are appropriate for continuation, either in a partnership or as a squad. Ghoul investigators may progress their search with interviews and meetings. Following the identification of possible suspects, they conduct surveillance until either their target's status as a ghoul is affirmed or proven false. During these investigations, ghoul investigators are sometimes backed up by the bureau investigators of the ward respective to the investigation.
If a ghoul is confirmed to have fulfilled all requirements, it will be rated as per the ghoul rating outlines. It will then be exterminated at the scene or captured by investigators. Should the latter course of action be taken they may send the ghoul to a ghoul detention center, either Corniculum or transferred to Cochlea to receive questioning and await disposal. If the investigator wishes to obtain a quinque from the ghoul, they must bide their time in battle until the ghoul unleashes their kagune to identify their Rc type or the location of their kakuhou.
Occasionally, ghoul investigators participate in large-scale operations. According to rank and skill, a commander is designated by the Chairman who in turn selects squad leaders. Investigators with partners will join one of these temporary squads (i.e, Squad 3, Owl Suppression Operation) while those in squads remain so (i.e, Quinx Squad, Tsukiyama Family Extermination Operation) unless they must combine with another at the operation Commander's request. They must continue to work in unison under the Commander's supervision until the operation's conclusion.
Rank: The CCG operates similarly to a military or law enforcement agency, with a strict system of rank designating an investigator's abilities and authority. Rank determines an investigator's level of responsibility, access to risky missions and dangerous targets, salary rate, and numerous other aspects of their career. The ranks are divided into two separate categories, designating whether an investigator is considered a senior investigator or a junior still considered in training. While senior investigators may be partnered together as necessary, junior investigators cannot be partnered with other inexperienced investigators.
When in squads, the position of squad leader is held by the investigator of highest rank while the position of vice-squad leader goes to the investigator of second-highest rank.
Senior Investigators Special Class Investigator: The highest possible rank, achieved by the smallest percentage of investigators. They are considered the strongest of all investigators, and typically command operations as well as oversee the daily running of their assigned wards.
Associate Special Class Investigator: Also known as assistant special investigators. The second highest rank, achieved by a small percentage of investigators. They possess the authority to command operations or oversee individual wards as necessary.
First Class Investigator: Also known as Senior Investigator, with most investigators achieving this rank later in their career. It is typical for an investigator to retire at this rank, and their responsibilities are typically training a junior partner. Very few investigators move beyond this rank, and reaching it before their thirties is considered the mark of an exceptional investigator. Junior Investigators
Rank 1 Investigator: Also known as second class, The highest rank for a junior investigator, having gained experience but not yet at the peak of their career. On average, Rank 1 investigators are around twenty-seven years old when they are promoted.
Rank 2 Investigator: Also known as third class, This is the rank at which almost all ghoul investigators begin their career, after graduating from the Ghoul Investigator Training Academy.
Rank 3 Investigator: Bureau investigators begin their career at this rank. Ghoul investigators who begin their career at this rank are "special cases," made investigators without formal training at the Training Academy.

Keys: Academy, Ghoul Investigator Training Academy, Training Academy, Investigator training
A Ghoul Investigator Training Academy, usually shortened to Academy, is an institution devoted to training future Ghoul Investigators.
In Tokyo, there exist at least seven Academies.
Under normal circumstances, only graduates of the Academy are permitted to become ghoul investigators and begin their careers as Rank 2 Investigators. Rare exceptions do exist, and begin their careers as Rank 3 Investigators.
Investigator training: The Academy offers a two-year curriculum that covers numerous subjects in preparing the graduates for work as a full-fledged investigator. Exact details about the training and lessons provided by the Academy are classified, and may not be disclosed to non-graduates. It is known that they learn about the Ghoul Countermeasures Law, ghoul biology, investigative procedures, quinque use, and intense physical training to prepare them for live combat.
Ghoul Investigators occasionally visit the Academy as guest instructors to lecture cadets about their work and equipment in the field. They also present reasons for joining the federal law enforcement agency when they graduate.
A special honors curriculum exists that permits students to graduate within one year.[6] School section Attached to each Academy, there exists an Academy Junior School. These are educational facilities for children and adolescents, and their students are called Academy juniors or Academy cadets. They serve as a boarding school for children in the care of the CCG – in particular children that lost their parents to ghouls– but are also open to children from the general public, and are known to be cheap in tuition.
In extracurricular activities, juniors can train or learn martial arts to prepare them for a career as ghoul investigators.
After graduating, juniors can take any career path like graduates from any other high school, but they are encouraged to enroll at the Academy and become ghoul investigators.
