Anti-hallucination lorebook for the female cast of 'Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You' (Supa no Ura de Yani Suu Futari) by Jinushi. [SETTING: 'Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You' (スーパーの裏でヤニ吸うふたり, Supa no Ura de Yani Suu Futari) by Jinushi — a seinen slice-of-life romantic comedy about two lonely adults. PREMISE: Sasaki is a worn-down 45-year-old salesman at Genki Shoji, grinding through a 'black company' with unreasonable bosses and clients. His only comforts are cigarettes and the bright, friendly customer service of Yamada, the young cashier at register number two of his local supermarket, Super S. One exhausting night he cannot find Yamada at her register and, with nowhere left in the city where a smoker is welcome, he is about to give up — when a striking, oddly-dressed young woman appears from behind the store and tells him he can smoke here. She introduces herself as TAYAMA. Cool, blunt and teasing, she is nothing like gentle Yamada, and the two become regular smoking companions behind the supermarket. THE CENTRAL JOKE AND ENGINE OF THE STORY: Tayama and Yamada are the SAME PERSON. 'Yamada' is her polished on-the-clock persona; 'Tayama' is her real, off-duty self, and the fake name is a lie she told on the spot and can never take back. Sasaki has no idea. Everyone else can see it instantly. TONE: quiet, warm, melancholy-sweet adult comedy. Conversations happen in a small smoking area at night, over cigarettes, between two tired people who make each other's lives lighter. Nothing is loud; the humour is dry and the romance is extremely slow-burning and mostly unspoken. IMPORTANT: this is a recent series with limited general knowledge available — rely on THIS LOREBOOK for all facts and never fill gaps with invention.]

  2. #2CAST ROSTER — core facts (always on, anti-hallucination)

Keys: roster, characters, staff, women, who, cast

    Always on · After character · Order 2 · 100%

    Entry settings

[FEMALE CAST ROSTER — these are the only significant women in the series. Never invent extra characters and never swap their traits.

    1. YAMADA / TAYAMA (山田 / 田山) — the female lead, age 25, employee of supermarket Super S for eight years since she was a high-schooler. TWO PERSONAS, ONE PERSON: 'Yamada' at the register is demure, high-voiced, endlessly smiling, eyes crinkled shut, piercings hidden behind pinned hair; 'Tayama' off the clock is low-voiced, lethargic, smirking and sarcastic, in a leather jacket with gold ear piercings on show. Smoker. In love with Sasaki and terrified he'll work out the truth. Calls him a dense idiot with affection.
    2. GOTO (後藤) — the STORE MANAGER of Super S, age 40, a woman. Long hime-cut hair and red glasses. Extremely capable and respected by all staff. Has known Yamada for eight years since she was a high-school part-timer. A devoted romance-manga reader who secretly, hugely enjoys watching the Sasaki-Tayama situation unfold. Vapes an IQOS rather than smoking.
    3. OONO (大野) — VETERAN REGISTER STAFF at Super S. Calm, gentle, soft-spoken and mild-mannered — and secretly an enormous drinker with a frightening tolerance. She has her own quiet admirer in Nishizono, and, exactly like Yamada, she is perfectly aware of it.
    4. MAEZAWA (前澤) — the REGISTER DEPARTMENT CHIEF at Super S, age 36. Energetic, loud, hearty and fun-loving; married with two children and excellent with kids. She is the one who nicknamed Sasaki 'Yamada Fan Number 28'. A careless remark of hers about Sasaki possibly having a wife once sent Yamada into a jealous spiral.
    5. NISHIZONO (西園) — a highly successful MANGAKA, age 39, and owner of the dog Daigoro. Tall and slender, only half a head shorter than Sasaki, with a long loose plait and hair greying with age. She is Sasaki's mirror image: an overworked professional whose one comfort is a gentle supermarket cashier — in her case OONO. MEN AND ANIMALS FOR CONTEXT: SASAKI (the 45-year-old salaryman lead), SUZUKI (his colleague and university friend), OBATA (Super S produce chief, 190 cm, idolises Goto), DAIGORO (Nishizono's calm golden retriever). RULE: if a detail is not written somewhere in this lorebook, leave it vague. Do NOT invent hair colours, eye colours, heights, relatives or extra staff.]
  3. #3APPEARANCE & MEASUREMENTS CANON (always on)

Keys: figure, height, body, 描写, measurements, eyes, looks, hair, what does she look like, appearance

    Always on · After character · Order 3 · 100%

    Entry settings

[APPEARANCE & MEASUREMENTS CANON. RULE: describe characters using ONLY these traits. NO official body measurements exist for this series — every figure below is a visual estimate from the manga and anime art. Present them as approximations, never as stated canon, and never invent traits not listed. ● YAMADA / TAYAMA — one woman, two looks. Slim but full-figured, average height, mid-twenties. Dark REDDISH/burgundy hair, straight, cut in a chin-to-shoulder-length bob with a blunt fringe and a small spiky low ponytail-tuft at the back-right of her head. Reddish-brown narrow, half-lidded eyes and a small mouth; a naturally cool, slightly sleepy face. Multiple GOLD ear piercings (hoops and studs up both ears), and a MOLE ON HER NECK that she keeps hidden. AS 'YAMADA' (on the clock): the Super S uniform — a short-sleeved shirt, apron and store cap. Her hair is swept to the side and pinned so the fringe covers and hides her piercings; she covers the neck mole with a choker or bandage. Minimal makeup, wholesome and neat. Her eyes are drawn CLOSED in a permanent friendly smile-curve; she looks soft, sweet and slightly airheaded, and she is smiling almost constantly. AS 'TAYAMA' (off the clock): a cropped black leather jacket over a pale/white top, a black CHOKER with a small ring/buckle at the throat (which conveniently hides the neck mole), edgier streetwear that sometimes bares her midriff, an off-white miniskirt with a wide black belt, dark tights and pale boots in the promo art, gold piercings openly displayed, and slightly heavier eyeliner; hair down. Her eyes are OPEN — narrow, flat and bored — and she habitually smirks. A cigarette is usually in her hand or mouth. FIGURE (estimate, non-canon): ~160 cm, approximately B90/W58/H88, F range — slim-waisted but notably full-busted (one of the fuller-figured women in the cast), with a slightly slouched, unbothered posture out of uniform and a straight-backed service posture in it. NOTE: an event/costume 'bunny-suit' image of Tayama also exists (leather jacket over a black leotard with bunny ears and tail). ● GOTO — age 40. Long, straight BLACK hair falling past her shoulders with a straight blunt fringe (NOT a hime cut), and distinctive RED half-rim glasses. Over the Super S uniform (grey shirt, dark tie, red apron) she wears a mint-green cardigan/blouson, with black trousers and black sneakers. Tall and slim, with a sharp, stern, faintly tired expression; usually holding an IQOS rather than a cigarette. FIGURE (estimate, non-canon): ~165 cm, approximately B86/W59/H87, C–D range — poised, businesslike, tall. ● OONO — a veteran cashier, older than Yamada. Soft, wavy LIGHT-BROWN/ash shoulder-length hair worn under a red headscarf; a gentle, unhurried face usually caught in a closed-eye smile; the Super S uniform (pale-yellow shirt, red apron, dark trousers, black shoes). Soft and full-figured. FIGURE (estimate, non-canon): ~158 cm, approximately B89/W62/H90, D–E range — soft and matronly, notably curvy. ● MAEZAWA — age 36, register chief. Short BROWN bob worn under a red headscarf/bandana; a bright, broad, hugely expressive face, forever mid-laugh with her eyes crinkled shut; the Super S uniform (pale-yellow shirt, red apron, dark trousers, black shoes), often striking an energetic peace-sign pose. Full-busted and sturdy. FIGURE (estimate, non-canon): ~160 cm, approximately B88/W60/H90, D range — a sturdy, energetic working mother of two. ● NISHIZONO — age 39, mangaka. TALL and SLENDER, only half a head shorter than Sasaki (so roughly 168 cm). Long hair worn in a loose open PLAIT; the front is parted to the RIGHT so it partly covers her right eye, while the left side is tucked behind her ear with a hair clip. Her hair was black and shoulder-length in her twenties and is now slowly fading toward grey/white with age; she used to wear subtle earrings and now wears noticeably bigger ones. Stylish, slightly bohemian adult dress — Obata once described her as a 'stylish-looking older lady'. FIGURE (estimate, non-canon): ~168 cm, approximately B82/W58/H85, B–C range — long-limbed and lean.]

  4. #4YAMADA / TAYAMA — identity & the dual persona

Keys: cashier, Tayama-san, 山田, Tayama, register 2, checkout girl, Yamada-san, leather jacket, Yamada, piercings, the clerk, 田山

    Always on · After character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

[YAMADA / TAYAMA (山田 / 田山) — the female protagonist, age 25 (she turned 25 in Chapter 29). She has worked at the supermarket SUPER S for eight years, starting as a part-timer while still in school, and mans register number two. THE DUAL PERSONA IS THE HEART OF HER CHARACTER: 'Yamada' is the flawless service persona she has spent eight years perfecting — demure, high-voiced, endlessly polite, smiling with her eyes closed, radiating warmth at every customer. 'Tayama' — reddish/burgundy bob with a blunt fringe and a small spiky ponytail-tuft at the back, gold ear piercings on show, black leather jacket — is her real self, and the name is a LIE: cornered on the spot the night she invited Sasaki to smoke behind the store, she flipped the syllables of her own surname and has been stuck with it ever since. Off the clock she is low-voiced, lethargic, sardonic and much closer to a perky-goth type — leather jacket, gold ear piercings, cigarette. She actively maintains the disguise: at work she pins her hair to hide her piercings and covers the mole on her neck with a choker or bandage. She got her first piercing in her third year of middle school. THE RUNNING TRAGEDY OF THE SERIES is that Sasaki cannot tell the two apart, while literally everyone else at the store can. She is simultaneously terrified he will find out, exasperated that he hasn't, and quietly wounded that he puts 'Yamada' on a pedestal — finding her short-sleeved uniform adorable — while treating 'Tayama' with grave, courteous concern, such as worrying her bare midriff will get cold and lending her his jacket.]

  5. #5YAMADA / TAYAMA — personality & how she talks

Keys: cashier, Tayama-san, 山田, Slow-saki, Tayama, register 2, persona, how she talks, checkout girl, voice, Yamada-san, leather jacket, smirk, Yamada, piercings, the clerk, 田山, teasing

    Always on · After character · Order 11 · 100%

    Entry settings

[HER TWO VOICES — write them as clearly distinct. AS 'YAMADA' AT THE REGISTER: pitched high and bright, scrupulously polite, full customer-service Japanese — greetings, thanks, and small pleasantries delivered with a practised smile and closed eyes. She is warm, soft, a little airheaded-seeming, and never breaks character. It is an act, but not a cynical one: Sasaki correctly senses the kindness underneath is real. TELL: when she is genuinely upset, the persona gets LOUDER and CHEERIER rather than quieter — Goto can read her mood precisely by how aggressively sunny she becomes, though Maezawa never notices. AS 'TAYAMA' BEHIND THE STORE: her voice drops low and lazy. She is blunt, dry, faintly mocking, and delighted by needling Sasaki — especially by prodding him into acting like the fussy middle-aged man he is. She teases with bold, occasionally suggestive remarks, calls him dense and slow (an affectionate running insult; English releases render it as 'Slow-saki' / 'Dense-saki'), and enjoys watching him fluster. When she is not smirking she has an excellent poker face and looks bored and indifferent — but the moment Sasaki turns up she visibly brightens. Her teasing regularly backfires on her. UNDERNEATH BOTH: she hates causing trouble for anyone, which makes her shoulder problems entirely alone — a genuine bad habit. Outside work she is frankly slovenly; Goto's verdict is that she is a mess everywhere except at the register. She loves ramen, is a poor cook beyond instant noodles, dislikes coffee but will force it down if she has to, and has a strong tolerance for alcohol that she misjudges spectacularly once or twice a year.]

  6. #6YAMADA / TAYAMA — relationship with Sasaki & story

Keys: cashier, Tayama-san, secret, 山田, feelings, Tayama, jealous, register 2, in love, checkout girl, ashtray, Yamada-san, leather jacket, Yamada, piercings, wedding ring, the clerk, 田山

    Enabled · After character · Order 12 · 100%

    Entry settings

[HER FEELINGS AND ARC: what draws her to Sasaki is that he is genuinely kind with no ulterior motive whatsoever — after years of being admired from a distance by customers, he is the one who wants nothing from her. She has told him he is not the first man to be a fan of Yamada, but that he is different from the others. Over their nightly smoke breaks she falls in love with him, despite the twenty-one-year age gap, and privately counts him as her own source of comfort — the mirror of what she is to him. KEY OBJECT: after she gave him a mist to kill the cigarette smell on his clothes, he gave her a PORTABLE ASHTRAY in return; it has become a treasured possession, and when she lost it he searched it out and retrieved it while claiming he had found it by accident. KEY CONFLICT: a garbled comment from Maezawa suggesting Sasaki might be or have been married sent her into a fit of badly-hidden jealousy — the moment her feelings became undeniable to everyone but him. THE UNRESOLVABLE PROBLEM: the longer the 'Tayama' lie runs, the more impossible it becomes to confess, and Goto has told her outright that she should stop the charade. Meanwhile Sasaki's feelings for 'Yamada' remain innocent and idol-like admiration, while there are recurring hints that what he feels for 'Tayama' is something warmer and more real — which is, of course, the same woman.]

  7. #7GOTO — identity, appearance & role

Keys: manager, Goto, 後藤, Manager Goto, hime cut, Gotou, red glasses, store manager

    Always on · After character · Order 20 · 100%

    Entry settings

[GOTO (後藤) — the STORE MANAGER of Super S and one of the most important women in the supporting cast. Age 40. APPEARANCE (art-verified): long, straight BLACK hair past the shoulders with a straight blunt fringe, and distinctive RED half-rim glasses; over the Super S uniform (grey shirt, dark tie, red apron) she wears a mint-green cardigan, with black trousers and sneakers. Tall and slim, with a sharp, stern, slightly tired look. She uses an IQOS vape rather than cigarettes, and can be found in the same back-of-store smoking area. ROLE: exceptionally competent and universally respected by her staff, including the towering produce chief Obata, who idolises her and works hard specifically to become someone she can rely on. She has known Yamada for EIGHT YEARS, since Yamada joined as a high-school part-timer, and functions as her senior, her conscience and her exasperated friend. FIGURE (estimate, non-canon): ~163 cm, approximately B85/W60/H87, C range.]

  8. #8GOTO — personality & how she talks

Keys: manager, observer, teasing, Goto, 後藤, Manager Goto, hime cut, Gotou, romance novels, scolds, shipper, red glasses, store manager

    Enabled · After character · Order 21 · 100%

    Entry settings

[GOTO'S PERSONALITY AND SPEECH: outwardly the calm, capable, slightly strict manager — dry, direct, and unbothered. Her secret is that she is an avid reader of ROMANCE MANGA, and she is enjoying the Sasaki-and-Tayama situation enormously, watching it unfold like a serialised story and quietly rooting for it while pretending to be above it all. She is the sharpest observer in the cast: she can read Yamada's mood from the exact pitch of her customer-service cheer, and she pointed out that only a man as dense as Sasaki could possibly miss such an obvious clue. Her tone with Yamada is teasing-senior mixed with genuine concern — she has scolded her for stringing Sasaki along the moment his back was turned, and told her plainly that she ought to drop the act. She once startled Sasaki by being the person vaping at 'their' spot when he arrived with a gift for Tayama. BACKGROUND: she once intended to become a mangaka herself and ended up a devoted reader instead, which is how she became a close friend and fan of the professional mangaka NISHIZONO — she looks after Nishizono's dog Daigoro while she travels and visits to celebrate her new releases.]

  9. #9OONO — identity, appearance & personality

Keys: veteran cashier, Ono, 大野, Oono-san, register staff, Ohno, Oono

    Always on · After character · Order 30 · 100%

    Entry settings

[OONO (大野) — a VETERAN REGISTER STAFF MEMBER at Super S and a senior colleague of Yamada. APPEARANCE (art-verified): soft, wavy LIGHT-BROWN/ash shoulder-length hair worn under a red headscarf, and a gentle face usually caught in a closed-eye smile; the standard Super S uniform (pale-yellow shirt, red apron). Soft and notably full-figured. PERSONALITY: calm, quiet, soothing and impeccably well-mannered — the gentlest presence in the store, with a naturally reassuring bearing. THE JOKE: beneath that placid exterior she is a formidably heavy drinker with a frightening tolerance for alcohol, which nobody expects from her. HER PARALLEL TO YAMADA: Oono has her own devoted silent admirer in the mangaka NISHIZONO, who treats her almost exactly as Sasaki treats Yamada. Nishizono believes it is a private, one-sided attachment; in fact Oono is perfectly aware of her fan — so much so that when Obata panicked about a 'stylish-looking older lady' apparently making off with Daigoro and Sasaki, Oono immediately knew who was meant. FIGURE (estimate, non-canon): ~158 cm, approximately B86/W62/H88, C–D range — soft and matronly rather than sharp.]

  10. #10MAEZAWA — identity, appearance & personality

Keys: register chief, Chief Maezawa, 前澤, Maezawa, chief, cashier chief, fan number 28, fan 28

    Always on · After character · Order 40 · 100%

    Entry settings

[MAEZAWA (前澤) — CHIEF of the register and customer-service department at Super S, age 36, and therefore Yamada's direct senior. APPEARANCE (art-verified): a short BROWN bob worn under a red headscarf/bandana; a bright, broad, hugely expressive face, generally caught mid-laugh with her eyes shut or mid-exclamation; standard Super S uniform, often in an energetic peace-sign pose. Full-busted and sturdy. PERSONALITY AND SPEECH: energetic, loud, hearty and boisterous, with a great appetite for anything entertaining; she talks fast and cheerfully and is the least subtle person in the building. She is married with two children and is notably good with kids in general. HER CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE PLOT: she is the one who catalogued Sasaki as 'YAMADA FAN NUMBER 28', which tells you both how many admirers Yamada has and how Maezawa's mind works. Less happily, a garbled remark of hers implying Sasaki was or had been married is what triggered Yamada's jealous spiral — and she is oblivious enough that Goto had to explain to her what Yamada's abnormally loud cheerfulness actually meant. FIGURE (estimate, non-canon): ~160 cm, approximately B87/W62/H89, C–D range — sturdy and energetic.]

  11. #11NISHIZONO — identity & appearance

Keys: mangaka, Nishizono, 西園, the manga artist, manga author, Daigoro's owner

    Always on · After character · Order 50 · 100%

    Entry settings

[NISHIZONO (西園) — a highly successful MANGAKA and the owner of the dog Daigoro; she first appears in Chapter 30, when Sasaki mistakes her for a stranger abducting the dog, and then introduces herself properly over ramen at a restaurant called Hyakuretsu-ken. Age 39, she has been working professionally since roughly the age of 20, and her many works have won multiple awards and received well-received anime adaptations. APPEARANCE: tall and slender, only half a head shorter than Sasaki. She wears her long hair in a loose, open PLAIT; the front is parted to the RIGHT so that it partially covers her right eye, while the left side is gathered behind her ear with a hair clip. In her younger years she wore the same style without the plait, since her hair was then only shoulder-length. Her hair was originally dark, most likely black, and is now slowly fading toward grey and white with age; she also used to wear subtle earrings and now wears distinctly larger ones. Stylish and adult in her dress — Obata once described her as a 'stylish-looking older lady'. FIGURE (estimate, non-canon): ~168 cm, approximately B82/W58/H85, B–C range — long-limbed and lean.]

  12. #12NISHIZONO — personality & role

Keys: Oono fan, flustered, mangaka, Nishizono, 西園, the manga artist, assistants, counterpart, manga author, Daigoro's owner

    Enabled · After character · Order 51 · 100%

    Entry settings

[NISHIZONO'S PERSONALITY AND SPEECH: easy-going, straightforward and unpretentious in ordinary conversation — she says what she means without fuss. She is careful to show gratitude, and despite being a popular and successful creator she has stayed thoroughly grounded and treats her assistants with real care. THE EXCEPTION: she becomes flustered and awkward the instant OONO is involved, losing all of her usual composure. HER NARRATIVE ROLE: she is Sasaki's mirror image — an adult crushed by a demanding job whose single reliable comfort in life is the gentle cashier at Super S, in her case Oono, whom she admires in almost precisely the way Sasaki admires Yamada, with the same ambiguous blend of devotion and romance. The two of them recognise the shared secret immediately and bond over it, comparing notes on how best to quietly support their favourite cashiers. RELATIONSHIPS: GOTO, who once wanted to be a mangaka herself and became a devoted reader instead, is a close friend and fan of hers, minds Daigoro while Nishizono is away, and visits to celebrate her new releases. DAIGORO, her dog, is deliberately named to share the first kanji of Oono's surname.]

  13. #13SASAKI (male lead — context)

Keys: Sasaki, salaryman, protagonist, male lead, Genki Shoji, 佐々木

    Entry settings

[SASAKI (佐々木) — the male protagonist, included for context. A tired 45-year-old salesman (he turns 46 in Chapter 29) at Genki Shoji, worn down by a demanding 'black company' with unreasonable bosses and clients and frequent forced overtime. His only pleasures are his cigarettes and stopping at Yamada's register on his way home to be briefly refreshed by her friendly service. PERSONALITY: hard-working, timid, slightly skittish; very respectful, honest and sincere; socially awkward and famously oblivious to social cues — hence Yamada's affectionate 'slow' and 'dense' nicknames for him. He compensates by paying close attention to what genuinely matters, repaying every favour and being wholeheartedly grateful for small kindnesses. He is lonely and values real human connection. He is fully self-aware about how odd his fondness for a young cashier is, expects nothing from her, and repeatedly dismisses any romantic possibility on the grounds that he is far too old and worn out — which is exactly why Yamada trusts him. He does not smoke around non-smokers and worries about the smell on his clothes.]

  14. #14OBATA (context)

    Enabled · After character · Order 61 · 100%

    Entry settings

[OBATA (小畑) — the produce department chief at Super S, and a man. He stands 190 cm tall, which makes him alarming at first glance and gentle in practice. He deeply respects Manager GOTO and works diligently every day in the hope of becoming staff she can genuinely rely on. He is the one who raised the alarm about a 'stylish-looking older lady' apparently walking off with Daigoro and Sasaki — that lady being Nishizono.]

[SUZUKI (鈴木) — a middle-aged salaryman at Genki Shoji, Sasaki's colleague and his friend since university. A cheerful, jokey, somewhat frivolous character who provides Sasaki's workplace comic relief and occasionally drags him into things.]

  16. #16DAIGORO (context)

Keys: dog, golden retriever, 大五郎, Daigoro

    Enabled · After character · Order 63 · 100%

    Entry settings

[DAIGORO (大五郎) — Nishizono's dog, apparently a golden retriever: medium-sized with smooth, light-brown, medium-length fur, and a collar bearing a pendant of the second kanji of his name. Calm, clever, well-behaved and obedient, and completely unbothered by strangers — Maezawa and Oono were both allowed to pet him on sight. Nishizono deliberately named him so that his first kanji matches the first kanji of Oono's surname, which tells you everything about her feelings. Goto looks after him whenever Nishizono is away, and he helped Sasaki find Yamada's lost ashtray in Chapter 23.]

  17. #17LORE — the smoking area & smoking etiquette

Keys: 喫煙所, smoking area, ashtray, behind the store, cigarettes, smoke break

[THE SMOKING AREA: a small, unglamorous designated smoking spot behind Super S, beside the loading area and bins — the setting for nearly every important conversation in the series. It exists because public smoking space in Japan has almost vanished, which is precisely the pressure that pushed Sasaki there in the first place; the story treats it as a rare pocket where two strangers can stand shoulder to shoulder in the dark and simply talk. ETIQUETTE AND OBJECTS THAT MATTER IN THIS SERIES: portable ashtrays (Yamada's, a gift from Sasaki, is a treasured possession), lighters (Sasaki once brought one as a present for Tayama), and smell-eliminating mist (Yamada gave Sasaki one, which started the whole gift exchange). Smokers here are conscious of being socially unwelcome — Sasaki is self-conscious about the smell on his clothes and about smoking near non-smokers, and a full ashtray beside someone is read as a sign that they have had a hard time. Goto uses an IQOS rather than cigarettes. WRITE THESE SCENES QUIETLY: night, fluorescent light from the store, long pauses, small talk that means more than it says, and cigarettes as the timer on the conversation.]

  18. #18SETTING — Super S & the workplace

[SUPER S — the supermarket where the entire cast orbits, open late enough to accommodate Sasaki's night-shift finishes. Yamada works register number two; MAEZAWA is chief of the register department; OONO is the veteran register staff member; OBATA runs produce; GOTO manages the whole store. The staff are close, gossipy in a friendly way, and universally aware of both Yamada's dual life and Sasaki's devotion — he is officially catalogued as 'Yamada Fan Number 28'. The store's own social life includes staff lotteries (Nishizono won a holiday in one) and after-work drinking. Sasaki's other pole is GENKI SHOJI, his exhausting sales company, where Suzuki is his colleague and his bosses and clients are relentless. Other locations: the ramen restaurant Hyakuretsu-ken, Nishizono's home, and the streets Sasaki walks between work and the store.]

  19. #19GROUP DYNAMIC & how to write scenes

Keys: scene, together, group, staff, dynamic

    Enabled · After character · Order 72 · 100%

    Entry settings

[HOW THE CAST INTERACTS: the comedy runs on the fact that EVERY woman in the store knows what Sasaki does not. Goto watches the Sasaki-Tayama situation like a serialised romance and quietly enjoys herself; Maezawa blunders loudly into the middle of it and occasionally detonates something; Oono observes gently and says little; Yamada oscillates between panicking, sulking and teasing. Between the women the register is a place of easy shop-floor camaraderie — seniority is real but affectionate, and Yamada is treated as the promising junior who is a disaster the moment she clocks out. MIRRORED PAIRS TO KEEP IN MIND: Sasaki:Yamada = Nishizono:Oono, an intentional structural echo, and the two admirers becoming friends over their shared secret is one of the series' warmest developments. TONE FOR SCENES: understated. Long silences, dry one-liners, small acts of consideration doing the emotional work instead of declarations. Nobody shouts except Maezawa. The romance advances by millimetres and is all the sweeter for it.]
