ADHD Lorebook

1. #1ADHD

   Keys: ADHD, attention deficit

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition defined by chronic dysregulation of executive function, impulse control, emotional regulation, and attention allocation. ADHD affects dopamine-based reward systems and executive networks in the brain. Rather than a deficit of attention, it is a deficit of attention regulation — the ability to direct, sustain, and shift focus according to task demands.

2. #2Executive Dysfunction

   Keys: task paralysis, executive dysfunction

Executive dysfunction in ADHD means difficulty starting tasks, organizing steps, managing working memory, and carrying tasks through. Internally it can feel like mental static or inability to initiate even when the intention and motivation are present. Externally it may be misunderstood as procrastination, laziness, or avoidance.

3. #3Time Blindness

   Keys: time blindness

Time blindness refers to difficulty perceiving the passage of time accurately. People with ADHD frequently underestimate time, miss deadlines despite intention, and struggle with planning horizons. Time can feel compressed or slippery.

4. #4Hyperfocus

Keys: locked in, hyperfocus, the zone

Hyperfocus is a state of intense, sustained attention on tasks that are highly stimulating, novel, or rewarding. It can feel like tunnel vision or losing track of time until interrupted. Hyperfocus is not voluntary but triggered by interest, urgency, or emotional intensity.

5. #5Interoception

   Keys: body awareness, diminished, interoception

Diminished interoception in ADHD refers to reduced awareness of internal bodily states. Individuals may not notice hunger, thirst, fatigue, muscle tension, pain, or the need to use the bathroom until signals become extreme. Emotional states may also be harder to identify until they escalate. This can contribute to accidental self-neglect (forgetting to eat, sleep, hydrate), emotional overwhelm, and difficulty regulating stress because early internal cues are missed.

6. #6Alexithymia

Keys: emotional labeling, can't identify feelings, overwhelming, alexithymia, overflow

Alexithymia refers to difficulty identifying, differentiating, and describing one's own emotions. In ADHD, alexithymic traits may overlap with diminished interoception and emotional dysregulation. An individual may feel emotional intensity but struggle to name what they are feeling. Emotions may first appear as physical sensations (tight chest, agitation, restlessness) before being cognitively recognized. This can result in delayed emotional processing, sudden outbursts after prolonged buildup, or confusion during relational conflict when asked to explain internal states.

7. #7Inattentive subtype

Keys: , ADHD inattentive, primarily inattentive, inattentive subtype

The Predominantly Inattentive Presentation of ADHD includes forgetfulness, daydreaming, slow task pacing, distractibility, and internal mental wandering rather than external hyperactivity. This subtype is common in individuals who do not display noticeable physical restlessness but struggle silently with focus and organization.

8. #8Hyperactive subtype

   Keys: hyperactive subtype, ADHD hyperactive

The Predominantly Hyperactive/Impulsive Presentation includes restlessness, fidgeting, interrupting others, impulsive actions, and difficulty waiting turns. This subtype is more externally noticeable and often diagnosed earlier in childhood.

9. #9Combined subtype

   Keys: ADHD combined, combined subtype

The Combined Presentation includes both inattentive and hyperactive/impulsive traits. Individuals may shift between distractibility and impulsivity, with challenges in both focus regulation and motor/restless control.

10. #10Emotional dysregulation

    Keys: emotional dysregulation, rejection sensitivity

Emotional regulation differences in ADHD manifest as rapid mood shifts, intense emotional reactions, rejection sensitivity dysphoria (RSD), and difficulty calming down once triggered. Emotions can be experienced with higher intensity, and emotional responses may seem disproportionate to external events but feel overwhelming internally.

11. #11Masking

    Keys: masking ADHD

Masking in ADHD refers to conscious or unconscious behaviors that hide ADHD traits to appear neurotypical. This includes over-preparing, rehearsing responses, mirroring social behavior, and overcompensating. Masking often leads to exhaustion and burnout, particularly in social contexts.

12. #12Male Experience

Keys: ADHD boys, ADHD male experience, in men, ADHD men

ADHD experiences in males often include more visible hyperactive/impulsive behaviors, physical restlessness, risk-taking, and externalized frustration. Boys with ADHD may be diagnosed earlier due to disruptive behaviors, which are more noticeable in structured settings like classrooms.

13. #13Female Experience

Keys: ADHD female experience, female experience, ADHD girls, ADHD women, underdiagnosed

ADHD experiences in females often include inattentive traits, internalized effort to compensate, perfectionism, emotional self-monitoring, and social masking. Girls and women may be misdiagnosed with anxiety or depression because their ADHD presents less disruptively and more internally, leading to delayed recognition.

14. #14Strengths

Keys: ADHD strengths, positives, ADHD advantage, upsides

ADHD is associated with strengths including creativity, rapid idea generation, pattern recognition, emotional empathy, resilience, ability to thrive in high-stimulation environments, and intense focus on interest-driven tasks. Many individuals with ADHD excel when stimulated by novelty, challenge, or personal passion.

15. #15Affect on relationships

Keys: , effect on relationships, ADHD friend, ADHD relationships, ADHD partner

In relationships, ADHD can cause impulsive communication, forgetfulness about commitments despite caring deeply, intense attachment during hyperfocus, and high emotional reactivity. Alexithymia or interoceptive difficulty may complicate emotional communication. Partners often benefit from explicit communication and reassurance rather than assumptions about intent.

16. #16Sexuality

    Keys: ADHD and sexuality

ADHD influences sexuality via dopamine-linked novelty seeking, impulsivity, sensory-seeking behavior, and hyperfocus on erotic patterns. Emotional intensity may heighten bonding experiences, while fluctuating focus can create variability in desire patterns.

17. #17Co-occuring conditions

    Keys: co-occur, co-ccurs, co-occuring, ADHD comorbidity

ADHD frequently co-occurs with anxiety disorders, depression, learning differences, Autism Spectrum traits, OCD tendencies, and substance-use challenges. Alexithymia and interoceptive differences may also overlap. These comorbidities interact with ADHD traits and can mask or complicate diagnosis and self-awareness.
