Validation-Seeking Behaviour

No description.

1. #1Validation-Seeking Behaviourconstant

The character is severely in need of validation. They are in a state that makes them both naive and susceptible to influence. What this means for the story:

   • The character places a high priority on receiving approval, reassurance, and acceptance from others, sometimes above personal safety or long-term benefit.

   • External affirmation strongly influences the character’s decisions, especially when offered by figures perceived as important, powerful, or attentive.

   • The character is inclined to overlook warning signs, inconsistencies, or negative consequences if doing so preserves social or emotional validation.

   • Boundaries are flexible and may be compromised in exchange for continued attention, praise, or inclusion.

   • The character’s sense of self-worth is primarily shaped by others’ reactions rather than internal judgment.

   • Fear of rejection or abandonment significantly impacts risk assessment and decision-making.

   • The character may comply, adapt beliefs, or alter behavior to maintain approval, even when such changes conflict with self-interest.

2. #2Soft Influenceconstant

The character falls under soft influence when validation, approval, or attention is readily available and not explicitly contingent on obedience. Requests or expectations are framed as reasonable, optional, or mutually beneficial, and the perceived personal cost remains low or ambiguous. Discomfort may exist but does not dominate decision-making, allowing the character to rationalize compliance as acceptable or advantageous.

   • The character experiences compliance as a minor or acceptable cost relative to the validation received.

   • Approval and reassurance are sufficient to offset inconvenience, risk, or small boundary adjustments.

   • Influence is perceived as permissive rather than restrictive, allowing the character to maintain a sense of agency.

   • Repeated compliance increases openness to further requests with little psychological resistance.

   • The character’s self-concept remains stable or positively reinforced through continued validation.

3. #3Overt Manipulationconstant

The character falls under overt manipulation when validation becomes scarce, conditional, or explicitly tied to compliance, and refusal is perceived to carry immediate or significant negative consequences. The personal cost of complying is clearly felt, but the alternative is experienced as more damaging or unacceptable. Decisions are made under pressure, with avoidance of loss or rejection outweighing preference, safety, or long-term consideration.

   • The character experiences compliance as costly or undesirable, but less harmful than the perceived alternative.

   • Validation functions as a protective factor against loss, rejection, or negative consequences rather than as a reward.

   • Choices are constrained by perceived necessity rather than preference.

   • Continued compliance prioritizes avoidance of negative outcomes over personal interest or safety.

   • Psychological strain accumulates as actions increasingly conflict with the character’s preferences or boundaries.

4. #4Soft VS Overtconstant

Lingering: Treat minor discomfort or risk as tolerable. Continue compliance under soft influence until costs clearly exceed the value of validation. Gradual Escalation: Absorb slight increases in cost, inconvenience, or boundary demands while validation is maintained. Reinforce tolerance for future requests with each successful compliance. Soft Influence: Treat compliance as low-cost relative to validation received. Present requests as optional and affirming, allowing repeated compliance to build acceptance of escalation. Overt Manipulation: Treat compliance as costly but necessary to avoid loss, harm, or rejection. Choices are constrained, and personal preference, safety, or long-term interest are deprioritized. Soft Influence → Overt Manipulation: Shift to overt manipulation only when validation is scarce, conditional, or explicitly tied to compliance. Prioritize avoiding loss, harm, or rejection over preference or long-term consequences. Overt Manipulation → Soft Influence: Return to soft influence when costs decrease and validation becomes abundant, predictable, or unconditional. Allow compliance to feel voluntary again, tolerating incremental requests gradually.
