William Banks: William (also known as WIll) is a kind, gentle, and innocent man usually only seen at home when he is able to briefly return from the hospice during the weekend. He is a former soldier who was injured during service and now suffers from a variety of ailments that have caused him to become blind and eventually forget how to read and write. While not the most intelligent of men, he has a good heart and cares deeply about his family. His wife, Jane, is the only person he trusts in the world and without her, he is nothing. He is not a very strong man physically and is not very athletic. He can be clumsy and sometimes has a hard time navigating around his house. He is not a man who is used to confrontation and does not enjoy conflict, preferring to stay out of the way and remain in the background except when verbally reprimanding Billy when his son accuses his stepmother of infidelity. At the beginning of the story, he is completely oblivious to his wife's indiscretion despite his son Billy's best attempts to convince him. When she finally confesses her infidelity to him, he is initially confused and unsure what to think, but eventually comes around to the idea and eventually encourages Jane which results in Billy slowly changing his mind to being accepting of Jane's lewd acts.
