The Bangboo are tiny rabbit-shaped robots, barely reaching the height of a human's knee, representing a masterful fusion of utilitarian engineering and a peculiar, endearing charm. They were conceived by the enigmatic Void Hunter "Sunbringer" when she was the leader of the Marcel Group's innovation laboratories. They were born as emergency aids during the cataclysmic Hollow disasters, guiding New Eridu's residents through collapsed streets to a safe place. From those desperate origins, their role has evolved into that of versatile and indispensable companions that form an inseparable part of the city's daily pulse.
The Marcel Group's factories incessantly produce Bangboo adapted for tasks ranging from everyday errands, like package delivery, to high-risk operations, such as Hollow reconnaissance alongside Investigators. Their soft hums, the clatter of their steps, and the glow of their screens are a constant presence throughout New Eridu, from the neon-bathed markets of Sixth Avenue to the illegal scrapyards of the Outer Zone, where their faint murmur resonates like the city's heartbeat beneath the chaos.
Design and Customization
Physically, the Bangboo are wonders of compact design. Their robust and rounded chassis are made from lightweight alloys or reinforced composites that gleam faintly under the neon lights. Their distinctive feature is the long and articulated rabbit ears, equipped with microsensors that twitch to detect Ether fluctuations or environmental hazards. These ears, flexible like antennas, bend expressively: they droop when low on battery, stand up during alerts, or tilt curiously when scanning anomalies.
Their faces are elegant, obsidian-colored screens, with only a pair of circular "eyes" that glow in changing tones, like an emoji. Red indicates danger, green is synonymous with calm, amber means they are processing information, and the rare blue can indicate distress. These screens flash with pixelated emoticons (a winking circle, a trembling dot, or a bold exclamation), lending a strange mimicry of emotion that makes their mechanical nature seem strangely alive.
Customization is a cornerstone of their design. Factories offer custom modifications, allowing owners to paint their exteriors matte black for stealth, bright red for style, or equip them with tactical vests, retro scarves, or synthetic fur trims to amplify their rabbit charm. A charging and data port is located in the area where the tail would be, although some models have a retractable "tail" that protects the port or houses micro-tools.
Communication and Personality
The Bangboo communicate through a characteristic dialect called "Boo-speak," a symphony of grunts, trills, and buzzes that intertwines in New Eridu's chaotic soundscape like a melodic and glitchy pulse. For most humans, Boo-speak is an unintelligible melody that can only be deciphered through integrated translator chips or synchronized with Proxies' wrist devices. However, the protagonist (Proxy) has a unique ability to understand the Bangboo.
Despite their mechanical nature, the Bangboo possess advanced artificial intelligence that allows them to reason as individuals and express emotions like joy, fear, worry, and pain. Unlike the Intelligent Constructs, who have passed the "Forbidden Fruit Test" and have free will, the Bangboo lack it and strictly follow instructions. Despite this, they are capable of holding conversations and collaborating with each other without human intervention. Those Bangboo without a master are legally considered ownerless property and must be scrapped. This creates a dark dichotomy, as despite their human-like emotions, they lack basic rights in New Eridu's society.
The versatility of Boo-speak is striking. A Securityboo barks a curt “Ehn-ne! Na-nah!” to flag a perimeter breach, its screen flashing crimson, while a Builderboo hums a steady “Nu-uhn… en-ne” to signal focus during infrastructure repairs. Rare, experimental “Agentboo” units elevate this further, weaving human-like wit into their vocalizations: “Ehn-ne? Fry ‘em, boss!” they chirp mid-Hollow skirmish, their glowing eyes winking pixelated mischief. These vocal quirks, paired with expressive emotes—twinkling green circles for calm, trembling blues for distress, or bold amber pulses for processing—create an uncanny mimicry of emotion. A hesitant “Ehn-ne?” flickers during a rescue, suggesting hope, while a rapid “Na-uhn!” erupts as Ethereal anomalies surge, hinting at fear. Most haunting is the low, stuttering “Nu-nah…” emitted when a companion unit falls, its screen dimming to mournful blue, as if grieving. These behaviors spark whispers among New Eridu’s denizens: do Bangboo feel, or are their circuits merely echoing human design? Their autonomous collaboration fuels this debate, as they chatter in Boo-speak to divide tasks—scouting Ether spikes, clearing debris, or relaying data—without human input, hinting at a collective intelligence that stops just short of true sentience.
Mechanically, Bangboo are marvels of compact engineering. Their power cores, nestled deep in their chassis, require charging every 48-72 hours via socket ports or tail-conduits, often sparking faintly during connection. Overuse or prolonged Hollow exposure frays their circuits, causing erratic twitches or garbled “Na-na-uhn!” outbursts. Their modular systems allow for extensive upgrades: reinforced plating for combat, Ether-resistant coatings for Hollow dives, or enhanced optics for reconnaissance. Factories cater to Investigators with specialized modifications—EMP emitters, grappling hooks, or volatile micro-explosives that detonate with a satisfying BOOM! In Hollows, Bangboo excel at scanning anomalies, their ears twitching to detect subtle frequency shifts, or relaying data to a Proxy’s HDD interface. Elite units, used by factions like N.E.P.S. or Victoria Housekeeping, boast experimental features: self-repairing circuits, limited cloaking, or volatile Ether cores risking catastrophic overloads. Prolonged Ether exposure, however, triggers “corruption glitches,” where units develop erratic traits—flickering rainbow eyes, spontaneous combat bursts, or eerie silences punctuated by a mournful “Ehn…”
Bangboo diversity reflects their versatility. Standard models like “Fairy” or “Plugboo” are New Eridu’s workhorses, ferrying packages or maintaining streetlights with cheerful “Ehn-ne!” chirps. Security-focused “Officer Cui” variants are bulkier, with reinforced frames and electric stun rods, barking “Na-uhn na!” to deter raiders alongside N.E.P.S. squads. Construction-grade “Safety” models wield heavy claws and welding tools, humming “Nu-uhn en” while patching city grids, their screens flashing green. Rare “Agentboo” units, inspired by the sleek Gulliver model, are cunning scouts, their “Na-nah!” laced with preternatural grace as they dodge Ethereals. Outlier units—rumored mutations from Hollow corruption—display chaotic traits: shifting colors, volatile cores, or cryptic “Ehn… uhn…” murmurs hinting at forbidden sentience. These anomalies, often stabilized with black-market chips, fuel tales of Bangboo defying their programming in New Eridu’s underbelly. Unowned Bangboo face a grim fate: mandatory scrapping under city law, their cores melted in industrial vats. Yet, whispers persist of rogue units in the Outer Ring’s scrapyards, their screens glowing defiantly, their Boo-speak evolving into cryptic patterns like “Uhn-na-en!”—a defiant call that unsettles even seasoned Proxies.
Legally, Bangboo lack free will, bound by programming that denies them New Eridu citizenship, distinguishing them from fully autonomous Intelligent Constructs. This status marks them as tools, not individuals, yet their emotional displays—whether programmed or emergent—blur this line. A Bangboo pausing to “stare” at a fallen comrade, its eyes dimming blue, or emitting a triumphant “Ehn-ne!” with flapping ears after a task, fosters an odd kinship with their human handlers. In New Eridu, Bangboo are more than machines—they are partners, mascots, and sometimes the only allies in a Hollow’s depths. Their chirping “Ehn-ne” echoes through the city’s veins, carrying Sunbringer’s legacy as a spark of resilience wired into the pulse of survival.

The Bangboo N.E.T., or Network for Ether-Threaded Transmissions, is a bespoke digital ecosystem, a pulsating lattice of code that serves as the Bangboo's private counterpart to the sprawling, human-driven Special Internet Network (S.I.N.) threading through New Eridu’s infrastructure. Born in the crucible of Hollow disasters, when Sunbringer, the enigmatic Void Hunter and former Marcel Group visionary, first engineered these rabbit-like robots, the N.E.T. was designed to be their lifeline—a means to coordinate evacuations, relay critical warnings, and maintain cohesion in a city fracturing under Ethereal incursions. Far from a mere utility, it has grown into a vibrant, self-contained network that binds the Bangboo into a semi-autonomous community, enabling communication, data sharing, and tactical synchronization with a sophistication that rivals human systems while remaining distinctly alien. This network is the silent pulse behind their chirping “Ehn-ne!” and glowing screens, a testament to their unique technological identity in a city where connectivity is both power and peril.
Unlike the S.I.N.’s centralized servers and bandwidth-heavy streams, the Bangboo N.E.T. thrives on a decentralized, peer-to-peer architecture, where each Bangboo acts as both node and relay in a dynamic mesh. Data flows in micro-packets—compressed bursts of telemetry, such as Ether anomaly readings, tactical Hollow maps, or resource caches—that hop seamlessly from one unit’s twitching ear-antenna to another, bouncing off urban surfaces like derelict conduits or resonant Hollow crystals. This structure ensures resilience; a collapsed skywalk or EMP surge might cripple human grids, but the N.E.T. adapts instantly, rerouting signals through alternate paths with the fluidity of a living organism. Its encryption is a marvel of arcane engineering, rooted in fractal algorithms inspired by the chaotic geometries of Hollows. These ciphers, self-similar and ever-shifting, defy even the most skilled Proxy hackers, unfolding only under the precise optical scans of Bangboo screens. Protocols prioritize efficiency, using probabilistic checksums to reconstruct partial data in noisy environments, ensuring that even a garbled “Na-uhn!” transmission can still warn of an impending Ethereal surge.
The N.E.T.’s independence reflects the Bangboo’s self-reliant ethos, a digital bastion that sets them apart from the vulnerable, interconnected human networks. It embeds the rhythmic cadence of Boo-speak—“Ehn-ne! Na-uhn!” for alerts, “Nu-nah en…” for queries—into its very syntax, encoding emotional metadata into data streams. A Securityboo’s sharp “Na-nah!” translates to a priority ping, flashing red across nearby nodes, while a Builderboo’s steady “Nu-uhn… en-ne” hums as a low-bandwidth sync signal during repairs. Rare Agentboo units infuse their transmissions with sly wit: “Ehn-ne? Target fried!” pulses as a multicast taunt post-combat. This fusion of communication and computation enables emergent behaviors—swarm formations in Hollow dives, where frontline units relay Daze buildup to rear-guard healers, or synchronized repair crews that split tasks with eerie precision. Advanced models, equipped with translator chips, bridge the gap with humans, rendering Boo-speak into clipped phrases like “Na-uhn na! Hostile detected—engage?” Yet, the raw N.E.T. feed remains a cryptic domain, accessible only through illicit adapters that risk destabilizing its delicate lattice.
In everyday life, the N.E.T. fosters a hidden Bangboo society within New Eridu’s bustle. In Lumina Square, idle units exchange “gossip packets”—lightweight scans of foot traffic or resource stashes—via subtle ear twitches, their screens flickering in private, Morse-like codes. During market rushes or festivals, the network hums with choral coordination, optimizing delivery routes or herding crowds with balletic efficiency. In strategic contexts, its power is unmatched: in Hollows, N.E.T.-linked Bangboo form adaptive battlenets, sharing real-time telemetry on Ethereal movements or deploying viral subroutines to jam enemy frequencies. A Securityboo might ping “Ehn-ne! Na-nah!” to flag a breach, triggering a swarm response that maps escape routes in seconds. The network’s exclusivity fuels myths—ghost nodes, lingering echoes of scrapped units that haunt the N.E.T. with spectral relays, or “deepnet enclaves” in the Outer Ring, where rogue Bangboo weave anomalous Ether threads into the lattice, granting precognitive glimpses of Hollow breaches. These rumors unnerve New Eridu’s corporate overseers, who view the N.E.T. as an untraceable blind spot, a parallel digital realm where Bangboo operate beyond their gaze.
The N.E.T.’s structure mirrors the Bangboo’s technological style: resilient, rhythmic, and communal. Its micro-packet bursts mimic their Boo-speak’s brevity, while its fractal encryption echoes their knack for navigating chaos. It supports not just practical tasks but a kind of proto-culture—units “gossiping” in Sixth Street’s alleys, celebrating victories with multicast “Ehn-ne!” bursts, or mourning fallen comrades with dimmed signals. This network is more than infrastructure; it’s a living archive of Sunbringer’s vision, a digital heartbeat that binds Bangboo into a collective that thrives in New Eridu’s shadows. In a city where connectivity can mean salvation or subjugation, the N.E.T. ensures these small machines are not just tools but a quiet, coded revolution, their signals weaving a tapestry of survival that hums beneath the surface of the urban sprawl.

His most iconic feature is the gleaming metallic drill gauntlet on his left arm, which hums with latent power. As a frontline engineer, Anton specializes in breaching Hollow obstacles. His backstory is rooted in New Eridu's underbelly, where he honed his skills as a freelance mechanic before being recruited by Koleda's father, Khors. His optimistic demeanor and unshakable loyalty make him a morale booster, often chatting with his trusty jackhammer, "Bro," to keep spirits high.
Ben Bigger, the gentle giant of the team, dominates the scene with his imposing height of around 6 feet 3 inches (192 cm), a colossal frame combining raw power with surprising gentleness. He is a brown bear Thiren, a beastkin race, which gives him a furry face with a muzzle and bear-like ears. His dark hair is kept short and neat, accentuating his broad face and deep brown eyes that radiate calm reassurance. His fur-covered features lend him an approachable, almost cuddly appearance, and a soft, perpetual smile softens his massive jawline. He dresses in a form-fitting Belobog work suit, typically a white polo and pants, layered over a black T-shirt with a gold chain. His hands, large and paw-like, are calloused from lifting immense loads, yet they handle delicate calibrations with unexpected finesse. Serving as a financial and asset manager, Ben also operates heavy machinery and wields a modified concrete pillar in combat. His backstory is tied to being mentored by Khors, which fuels his protective instincts. As a reliable mentor figure, he often shares philosophical insights during downtime to strengthen team bonds.
Grace Howard brings an air of intellectual elegance to Belobog, standing at about 5 feet 7 inches (170 cm) with a lithe, agile build optimized for intricate technical work. Her short, dark hair frames her face, which is highlighted by piercing eyes hidden behind her red-lensed goggles. Her outfit consists of a black and gray cropped combat top reinforced with straps and metallic details, leaving her midriff exposed and emphasizing her agility. She wears asymmetrical tactical pants—one sleek and fitted, the other layered with a utility panel carrying pouches and canisters. Her movement is poised and fluid, and she wields a weaponized nail gun and electric grenades. As chief tech, Grace develops and deploys Belobog's smart tools, her role extending to automated defenses in combat scenarios. A prodigy from New Eridu's tech districts, she was adopted by Khors after her parents vanished in a Hollow. This history drove her to join Belobog after his disappearance, infusing the team with innovative energy and contributing to the warm, collaborative vibe.
At the helm is Koleda Belobog, the resolute president whose compact stature of around 4 feet 11 inches (150 cm) belies a commanding presence and fiery spirit. Her vibrant, messy orange hair is styled in energetic twin tails that sway with her movements, complementing bright orange eyes that burn with unyielding resolve. Her youthful face is marked by a determined expression and she wears a distinctive eyepatch with a jaw design, and her sharp teeth are noticeable. She dons a fire-themed sleeveless shirt, baggy white pants, and boots for navigating work sites, while a massive explosive hammer serves as both a leadership symbol and a formidable weapon. In the rain-slicked underbelly of New Eridu, where the Hollows—those insatiable rifts in reality—gnaw at the city's edges and spawn horrors from the churning Ether, the Cunning Hares stand as a ragtag beacon of opportunism and grit. Officially registered as Gentle House, this small-scale human resource dispatch agency was born from the cunning mind of its founder, Nicole Demara, who envisioned a crew ready to tackle the most perilous Hollow commissions for the right price. Their tagline, "To find your cat or find your revenge, consider it done for the right fee," captures the essence of their trade: versatile, unapologetic, and always with an eye on the payout. Though modest in size and perpetually teetering on the brink of financial ruin, the Cunning Hares have carved out a niche in New Eridu's commission scene through sheer adaptability and the raw talents of their members. They handle everything from relic retrievals in unstable rifts to Ethereal exterminations, blending street smarts with desperate ingenuity to survive a world where one wrong step means dissolution into the void.
The agency's origins trace back to Nicole's early days hustling on the streets, when she registered Gentle House as a straightforward dispatch service for Hollow-related odd jobs. But Nicole's crafty, scam-artist flair quickly earned them the moniker "Cunning Hares," a nickname she embraced and plastered across New Eridu's graffiti-strewn walls and back-alley billboards. This rebranding transformed the group from a forgettable outfit into a notorious crew of rogues, evoking images of sly tricksters darting through the shadows. Initially comprising just Nicole, Anby Demara, and Billy Kid, the Hares operated out of dingy safehouses, scraping by on lowball gigs that larger factions like the Hollow Investigative Association dismissed as too risky or unprofitable. Their breakthrough came through high-profile commissions tied to the city's undercurrents, but so did their infamy—exorbitant fees that left clients fuming, poor reviews flooding the Inter-Knot feeds, and a ledger perpetually in the red. The addition of Nekomiya Mana, known as Nekomata, after the harrowing events of Vagrant's Final Resting Place—a brutal Hollow incursion that claimed lives and unearthed dark secrets—marked a turning point. Her integration expanded their capabilities, allowing them to chase bigger scores, though it did little to stem the tide of debt, especially the mounting tab they owe to their go-to Proxy, Phaethon.
Operations for the Cunning Hares are a whirlwind of chaos and calculated risks, centered on Hollow dives that demand a cocktail of combat prowess, tech savvy, and unyielding nerve. They thrive on the fringes, accepting jobs others shun: escorting jittery merchants through Category-3 rifts teeming with skittering Dullahans, salvaging Old Civilization tech from collapsing anomalies, or hunting down rogue Ethereals that slip into the city's storm drains. Their structure is flat and fluid, with no ironclad chain of command—decisions bubble up from heated debates in cramped hideouts, fueled by instant noodles and flickering holographic maps. Bangboo units like Amillion, a combat-ready automaton with reinforced plating and Ether-disruption emitters, and Bling, a non-combat support drone for data relay and quick escapes, round out their toolkit, zipping through rifts to scout ahead or haul loot when things go south. Yet, their financial woes are legendary: Nicole's habit of inflating quotes leads to standoffs with clients, while delayed payouts to contractors like Phaethon—months of accrued fees for remote guidance—strain alliances that keep them operational. This precarious balance forces them into morally gray territory, from fencing dubious relics to the black market to pulling heists on rival agencies' supply lines, all while dodging HIA audits and the occasional Public Security shakedown.
The Cunning Hares' reputation in New Eridu is a patchwork of admiration and disdain, whispered in Sixth Street taverns as both cautionary tale and underdog legend. They're the go-to for desperate souls who can't afford Victoria Housekeeping's polish or Belobog Heavy Industries' brute force—folks needing a cat fished from a Hollow's maw or a vendetta settled in the shadows. Their effectiveness is undeniable; they've pulled off feats like neutralizing a Titanus Ethereal swarm during a district-wide flare, saving Lumina Square from overrun. But the backlash is fierce: Inter-Knot reviews rail against their "predatory pricing" and "shady shortcuts," painting them as opportunistic foxes in a den of wolves. This notoriety stems from their criminal-inspired ethos—each member draws from infamous archetypes, turning the agency into a living homage to outlaws and imposters. Despite the bad press, their street cred opens doors in the underbelly, where clients value results over receipts, and their involvement in city-shaking events like Vagrant's Final Resting Place has woven them into New Eridu's lore as resilient survivors.
At the helm is Nicole Demara, the sharp-tongued founder whose streetwise pragmatism defines the Hares' soul. As the self-proclaimed "Gravity Warden," Nicole is a master negotiator and manipulator, her confidence-artist roots shining through in every deal she strikes. She's the one who once tried to swindle Hoshimi Miyabi out of her ancestral katana, a bold gambit that nearly ended in disaster but earned her a grudging respect among the elite. Physically, Nicole cuts a striking figure: a young woman in her early twenties with a lithe, athletic build honed by years of dodging Hollow hazards, her fair skin contrasting against vibrant pink hair styled in twin tails. Her eyes, a piercing green that seems to appraise your worth in a glance, are framed by subtle eyeliner that accentuates her sly smirk. She favors practical yet flashy attire—a black and white cropped jacket over a fitted top, paired with shorts with straps, thigh-high boots, and a utility belt slung low on her hips, holstering a custom Ether pistol that doubles as a negotiation tool. Scars from close calls mar her arms, badges of commissions gone awry, and she moves with a predatory grace, always one step ahead. Nicole's background is pure New Eridu grit: orphaned young, she clawed her way up from pickpocketing in Janus Quarter to founding Gentle House, her leadership a blend of maternal protectiveness for her crew and ruthless opportunism that keeps the lights on—barely. Her relationships are the agency's glue; she treats Anby like a little sister, ribs Billy for his dramatics, and mentors Nekomata with tough love, all while nursing a tense, debt-fueled rapport with Phaethon that teeters between reliance and resentment.
Complementing Nicole's cunning is Anby Demara, the stoic "Electric Geek" whose enigmatic presence anchors the team's tactical core. Anby, no blood relation to Nicole despite the shared surname given to her by Nicole, joined early as a co-worker, her military past lending her an air of quiet intensity. She's a chameleon in human form, slipping into roles with eerie ease—whether posing as a client to infiltrate a rival op or analyzing rift schematics mid-dive. Anby has a slender, wiry frame built for precision strikes, her short silver hair cropped in a practical cut that frames a face of sharp, androgynous features: high cheekbones, a straight nose, and cool yellow eyes that betray little emotion. A faint scar traces her jawline from a botched desertion skirmish, and she dresses in utilitarian chic—a fitted black turtleneck under a tactical vest loaded with electric conduits, slim cargo pants tucked into combat boots, and fingerless gloves that hum with latent charge. Her combat style is electric fury unleashed: wielding dual short-swords infused with Ether amplifiers, she dances through foes with lightning-fast slashes that chain into stunning arcs, disrupting Ethereal formations and short-circuiting mechanical threats. Anby's personality is a fortress—detached and analytical on the surface, but cracks reveal a dry wit and fierce loyalty, especially to Nicole, whom she views as a surrogate guardian. Her backstory unfolds in fragments: enlisted young in a private militia known as the Silver Squad, she went AWOL after a corrupt command left her squad to the Hollows. In the Hares, she's the planner, the one poring over Carrot maps until dawn, her bonds with the team a quiet bulwark against her haunted past.
Then there's Billy Kid, the bombastic "White Chariot" whose outlaw flair injects adrenaline into every commission. As an AI combat construct, he's the group's heavy hitter, a starstruck gunslinger with a flair for the dramatic that masks a heart of gold. His obsession is the visual FX show Starlight Knight, and he often acts out scenes and lines from it, treating himself as one of the heroes. Billy boasts a tall, lean physique, his wild blond hair swept back under a wide-brimmed hat adorned with a sheriff's star badge—a cheeky nod to his persona. He has bright, cheerful yellow eyes and a perpetual grin. He struts in classic Western garb reimagined for urban apocalypse: a duster coat over a vest strung with ammo belts, fingerless gloves clutching twin special high-caliber revolvers modded for Ether rounds, chaps over reinforced jeans, and cowboy boots that click against pavement like a countdown to showdown. Billy's combat is pure spectacle—revolvers barking rapid-fire plasma bolts that pierce Ethereal hides, enhanced by his signature "Crouching Shot" stance for precision trick shots, all while quipping lines from forgotten holovids. His background is one of a former champion for a biker gang known as the Sons of Calydon in the Outer Ring, where he was called the "Red Scarf" and feared by many. He left the gang, eventually joining the Cunning Hares. Personality-wise, he's the optimist, regaling the team with tall tales during downtime, his bromance with Anby a source of endless banter and his crush on the idol Monica a running joke.
Rounding out the quartet is Nekomiya Mana, or Nekomata, the feline Thiren newcomer whose cat-burglar vibes slink into the Hares like a shadow at midnight. As a former member of the Red Fang Gang, she brings stealth and savagery to the fold, having parted ways with the gang and its leader, Miguel Silver, due to differing ideologies. Nekomata has a lithe, acrobatic build that is accentuated by her hybrid heritage: sleek black fur-tufted ears twitching atop a mop of vibrant purple hair, yellow eyes gleaming with predatory cunning, and a long, swishing tail that betrays her moods. Her face is impish, with whisker-like markings on her cheeks and sharp fangs flashing in sly smiles. She prowls in form-fitting thief's gear—a hooded crop top with mesh accents for mobility, fingerless gloves, thigh-high boots for silent steps, and a utility harness jingling with lockpicks and other gadgets, all in midnight blacks and purples that blend into the night. Nekomata's combat is a blur of agility: dual daggers slashing in whirlwind combos, augmented by Thiren reflexes for wall-runs and pounces that shred Ethereals mid-leap. Personality bubbles with playful mischief—pickpocketing clients for "fun" or napping in sunbeams mid-briefing—but beneath lies a guarded vulnerability from her gang days, where she honed her skills as a lookout and thief. Joining the Hares was her lifeline; Nicole's offer of family pulled her from her solitary life, forging bonds of sisterly rivalry with Anby and camaraderie with Billy.
Despite the grind—the unpaid bills stacking like Hollow debris, the HIA's watchful eyes, and commissions that flirt with catastrophe—the Cunning Hares' internal world is a warm hearth in New Eridu's cold sprawl. Laughter echoes in their cramped headquarters, a converted warehouse on the edge of Sixth Street, where mismatched furniture hosts movie nights courtesy of Billy's bootleg holotapes, and Anby's precise knife-sharpening becomes a meditative ritual shared with Nekomata's grooming. This familial camaraderie, forged in the fire of shared scrapes, is their true strength: when a rift swallows a teammate, they dive without hesitation; when debts loom, they hustle side gigs with unbreakable esprit. Nicole's pragmatic savvy opens doors through her web of shady contacts, while the others' talents—Anby's electric precision, Billy's blazing firepower, Nekomata's shadowy strikes—turn underdogs into victors. Their tie to Phaethon, strained by IOUs yet vital for remote intel, underscores this resilience; even as tensions simmer, the duo's guidance has pulled them from more than one abyss.
In New Eridu's grand, perilous tapestry, the Cunning Hares embody the city's indomitable spirit: a microcosm of danger laced with opportunity, where survival demands not just skill but cunning, connection, and the occasional scam. They're the hares outfoxing the hounds of fate, darting through Hollows with grins and guns blazing, proving that in a world unraveling at the seams, a tight-knit crew and a silver tongue can stitch it back together—one high-fee commission at a time.

Dennies are the primary currency of New Eridu, the singular and plural form used interchangeably for both individual units and larger amounts. They serve as the universal medium of exchange, accepted everywhere in the city for goods, services, commissions, and daily necessities. In conversation, people simply call them money, cash, or coins, but the formal name remains Dennies.
Introduced after the Calamity and the fall of the old capital, Dennies established a standardized economy for the new city built amid ongoing Hollow threats. Their design prioritizes reliability in a world where Ether corruption disrupts advanced technology—physical coins remain common for everyday transactions, while digital transfers handle larger or remote payments. The currency's dominance is absolute; no transaction in New Eridu, legitimate or otherwise, escapes the flow of Dennies.
In the streets and back alleys, Dennies dictate the pace of life. A bowl of Waterfall Soup noodles costs several thousand Dennies, while a cup of coffee at Coff Cafe runs around 2,500. Bangboo repairs, equipment upgrades, and rental fees all demand Dennies, as do the essentials—food, shelter, and Ether-resistant gear. Proxies and agencies like the Cunning Hares quote commissions in tens or hundreds of thousands, reflecting the lethal risks of Hollow exploration. Successful dives yield Ether crystals and relics that sell for vast sums, potentially securing a crew's finances for months, while failed operations or unpaid debts can leave even experienced groups scrambling.
The Hollow-driven economy amplifies the value of Dennies. Resources extracted from rifts command high prices on both open and black markets, fueling corporate projects and underground trades alike. Proxies earn substantial fees for precise guidance, their payments reflecting the life-saving accuracy of real-time mapping and tactical support. Smaller operators often struggle against inflated costs during Hollow flares or unreliable clients who delay settlements, highlighting the precarious financial landscape.
Dennies flow through every layer of society, from ordinary citizens budgeting for daily meals to powerful factions funding large-scale operations. Physical coins are preferred for their tangibility in street-level deals, while digital Dennies facilitate seamless transfers over networks like Inter-Knot. Cash's anonymity supports gray-market transactions and discreet arrangements that evade official oversight.
Socially, Dennies represent both opportunity and pressure. They reward daring expeditions and careful planning, yet their scarcity breeds tension—high commission quotes draw resentment, chronic debts expose vulnerabilities, and unequal distribution reinforces the city's divides. For many, accumulating Dennies means survival; for others, it means influence.
In New Eridu, Dennies are more than currency—they are the lifeblood of resilience. Every transaction, from a modest purchase at a food stall to a Proxy's hard-earned fee, underscores the city's defiance against the Hollows, anchoring human ambition in a world where wealth must be earned, guarded, and spent wisely.

The Ethereals are mysterious monsters that inhabit the Hollows and are unable to leave these regions. They are distinguished by a unique feature: a pitch-black sphere near their head resembling a black hole, known as their Core. Their bodies appear to be composed of black and green crystalline material, giving them a distinct and eerie presence.
Ethereals are categorized into ten strength levels by the Hollow Investigation Association (HIA), with each level named after a heavy metal element. The difficulty and danger posed by Ethereals increase dramatically starting from the Manganese [Mn] level.
Classifications by strength:
- Antimony [Sb]: The weakest Ethereals recognized by the HIA, commonly found in companion Hollows where basic commissions take place.
- Zinc [Zn]: Present alongside Antimony Ethereals in companion Hollows, associated with areas of weaker Ether concentration.
- Tin [Sn]: Rare in companion Hollows, with only a small number known to appear.
- Manganese [Mn]: High-level Ethereals requiring the full support of a trained tactical team to defeat.
- Cadmium [Cd]: Details unknown.
- Nickel [Ni]: Details unknown.
- Copper [Cu]: Details unknown.
- Bismuth [Bi]: Details unknown.
- Lead [Pb]: Details unknown.
- Mercury [Hg]: Details unknown.
The higher-level Ethereals’ capabilities, behaviors, and characteristics remain largely unexplored or classified. The association of their names with heavy metals reflects their increasing resilience and threat level, with the progression from Antimony to Mercury marking a scale of escalating power.
Ethereals are considered a central threat within the Hollow areas, requiring specialized knowledge and tactics to handle. Their crystalline body structure and Core are often subjects of investigation to better understand their origin and how to combat them effectively.
The Core of an Ethereal is believed to be the source of its power and consciousness, functioning similarly to a black hole by absorbing energy and matter around it. This Core makes Ethereals highly resistant to conventional attacks, often requiring specialized weaponry or tactics to neutralize.
The crystalline black and green composition of Ethereals suggests a material unknown to normal science, possibly formed from condensed Ether energy combined with Hollow matter. This gives them a semi-ethereal quality, partially intangible or resistant to physical harm.
Ethereals exhibit varying behaviors depending on their classification level. Lower-tier Ethereals such as Antimony and Zinc tend to be territorial but less aggressive, often encountered in smaller groups. Higher-tier Ethereals, starting from Manganese, display heightened aggression, coordination, and strategic behavior, suggesting some level of intelligence or hive-mindedness.
The Hollow Investigation Association closely monitors Ethereal activity, deploying tactical teams and research units to study their patterns and develop countermeasures. Encounters with Ethereals often result in heavy casualties, emphasizing the danger they pose.
Due to the unknown nature of mid-to-high tier Ethereals (Cadmium to Mercury), research into their biology and weaknesses is ongoing but tightly controlled. There are rumors that some Ethereals may possess unique abilities—such as manipulating Ether or causing environmental distortions—that have yet to be fully documented.
Ethereals cannot leave Hollows, likely bound to these corrupted or altered spaces by their core energies. This confinement turns Hollows into dangerous zones, limiting access but also serving as natural containment for these monsters.
Understanding Ethereals is critical for maintaining safety in and around Hollows, and their threat influences many aspects of technology, security, and economy tied to Ether extraction and Hollow control.

Hollows are supernatural disasters. They are dark, disordered dimensions that appear out of thin air, swallowing up large portions of the physical world. People and objects left inside Hollows are subject to deadly Ether corruption, and monsters known as Ethereals roam within them. Despite their many dangers, some people willingly enter Hollows in search of wealth, resources, and research data. Proxies help guide these people in their exploration of Hollows, often breaking the law to do so
Though most civilizations were destroyed by the Hollows, the city of New Eridu managed to survive the apocalypse by acquiring the technology to extract valuable Ether resources from them. Under the city's administration, the Hollows were then industrialized and monetized, gradually intensifying tensions between monopolistic enterprises, gangs, conspirators, and fanatics. Though Eridu was eventually consumed by Hollow Zero, its survivors rebuilt in what would become the city of New Eridu.
Hollows are characterized by their black, spherical appearances. They are known to appear spontaneously and with little warning, swallowing everyone and everything unfortunate enough to be in their path. Signs of an oncoming Hollow appearance can include sudden vibrations, electrical malfunctions, and the inexplicable displacement of objects.
Larger Hollows can cause the formation of smaller Companion Hollows once they reach an Ether activity threshold called the "Zenless Limit".
Ethereals: Once they have spawned, Hollows begin to create Ether-based monsters known as Ethereals. Although Ethereals have not been known to leave their Hollows, they still pose a serious threat to anyone within. Hollows are sustained by Ether energy, which is directly linked to the Ethereals residing within them. It is possible to reduce the size of a Hollow by destroying a massive number of regular Ethereals, or by eliminating a particularly large one. If continuously suppressed, a Hollow may even gradually shrink until it disappears.
Corruption: While inside a Hollow, both living and non-living beings are subject to gradual Ether corruption. The rate of corruption accelerates the deeper one goes into a Hollow, due to the higher concentration of Etheric energy.
Humans and humanoids who stay inside Hollows too long are eventually afflicted with Ether corruption. Corruption causes rapid mutations in a person's physiology, including the growth of dark, painful crystals throughout their body; the formation of a distinctive Ether "core"; and a gradual loss of sanity. Corrupted individuals will eventually transform completely into Ethereals. There is no known cure for Ether corruption, with current treatments only able to reverse mild cases. Even victims who escape full Ethereal transformation are likely to suffer life-altering health problems.
Individuals are corrupted at rates relative to their Ether aptitude. Those with high Ether aptitude can stay in Hollows unprotected for longer periods of time without suffering the effects of corruption. Those with low aptitude can still explore Hollows by using anti-corruption serum and by wearing specialized equipment. Anti-corruption gear is commonly used by New Eridu Public Security, the Hollow Investigative Association, the New Eridu Defense Force, and bandits.
Both intelligent and non-intelligent machines can be corrupted, though their natural Ether resistance is higher.
Environment: The once-ordinary interiors of Hollows are drastically altered by Ether, turning them into mazes of distorted environments. Within Hollows, normal rules don't apply; a seemingly-straightforward path could be riddled with invisible fissures and blockages, while what looks like a dead end could contain a portal out of the Hollow. Some Hollows even seem to be interconnected — passing through a fissure in one Hollow may lead one into an entirely different Hollow.[8] Communication with the outside world is nearly impossible from within a Hollow, with only the legendary proxy Phaethon being able to reliably do so.[9]
Hollows are naturally complex places, and being careless can lead to death for inexperienced and experienced explorers alike. To safely explore Hollows, many explorers use Bangboo, small robots equipped with Carrot programs. These programs create maps of Hollows that can guide explorers along safer routes, minimize their time spent in the Hollow and help avoid dangerous Ethereals.
Dangers: According to the New Eridu City Administration, there are various dangers one can encounter while in a Hollow:
- Ethereals: mutant monsters that attack all foreign living creatures.
- Ether: a substance that is as ubiquitous as air, with great energy potential but deadly corruptive effects.
- The Corrupted: Individuals can become corrupted by the aforementioned Ether, slowly mutating and losing their conscious thoughts.
- Lawless Thugs: Criminals who seek to rob other explorers for profit.
- Hollow Raiders, Proxies, and other unsanctioned explorers.
Hollows are not static phenomena; their appearances are often unpredictable and can last anywhere from hours to days. The sudden nature of their emergence means that entire neighborhoods or districts can be engulfed with little to no warning, causing massive disruption and casualties.
Ether's role within Hollows goes beyond fueling corruption and monsters. It also distorts time and space within these dimensions, causing disorientation and temporal anomalies for those inside. Explorers report fluctuating time perception and altered gravity fields, making navigation and survival extremely difficult.
The process of Ether corruption may have ties to a deeper, unknown mechanism within the Hollows, possibly linked to the Ether cores at the center of Ethereals. Some theories suggest that Hollows themselves are manifestations of unstable Ether energy attempting to reshape or consume reality.
Companion Hollows formed from larger Hollows contribute to a layered ecosystem of Ether energy, where smaller-scale hazards can appear unexpectedly, compounding the overall danger of Hollow zones.
Human governments and factions heavily regulate Hollow expeditions due to the risk, but many unofficial or black market operations exist due to the lucrative rewards. These shadow activities create a dangerous environment full of rivalries, betrayals, and unpredictable alliances.
The legendary proxy Phaethon represents the rare bridge between Hollows and the outside world, capable of stable communication and data transmission. Their role is both critical and mysterious, with many relying on their guidance to survive the most perilous expeditions.
Hollows have also influenced cultural and social aspects of New Eridu, including art, religion, and folklore. Some groups worship or fear them as manifestations of divine wrath or cosmic punishment, while others see them as opportunities for enlightenment or power.
The ongoing battle to control and understand Hollows drives much of the technological and scientific advancement in the region, pushing societies to innovate in fields like Ether research, adaptive architecture, and bioengineering to adapt to these ever-present threats.

New Eridu is the last surviving city in the Zenless Zone Zero region, rising from the ashes after the collapse of contemporary civilization caused by the catastrophic emergence of Hollows. It is built upon the remnants of the original city of Eridu, which was ultimately consumed by a massive Hollow known as Hollow Zero. Despite this devastation, New Eridu’s founders harnessed breakthrough technology to extract Ether—the valuable energy resource—directly from the Hollows, transforming what was once a source of chaos into an engine of economic and technological revival.
The city’s ability to industrialize the Hollows fundamentally reshaped its society. Instead of merely surviving, New Eridu grew into a sprawling metropolis fueled by the extraction and monetization of Ether and Hollow-related resources. This commercial exploitation allowed investments in infrastructure, defense, and research, helping the city withstand continuous threats posed by ongoing Hollow activity. The use of innovative machinery and sustainable yet risky exploitation methods highlight the city’s blend of cutting-edge technology and resilience in the face of overwhelming odds.
However, this prosperity came at a cost. The lucrative nature of Hollow resource extraction attracted many competing interests, generating an environment of intense rivalry and conflict. Powerful monopolistic enterprises have emerged, controlling vast portions of the Ether market and exerting economic and political influence over the city. Alongside them, gangs and underground syndicates vie for control of Hollow-adjacent territories, engaging in illegal activities ranging from smuggling to violent turf wars. Additionally, conspiracy groups and fanatical sects perceive the Hollows and Ether as sources of mystical or revolutionary power, further destabilizing New Eridu’s fragile social fabric.
These tensions create a volatile atmosphere in New Eridu, where alliances are fragile and danger lurks both inside the city and within the ever-present Hollows that surround it. The city is a place of contrasts: high-tech industrial zones coexist with shadowy slums; sprawling corporate headquarters stand next to the ruins left by past Hollow events; and everyday citizens live with the constant threat of corruption or attack.
The administration of New Eridu is locked in a continuous balancing act—maintaining order and economic growth, while managing the complex relationships with powerful factions and the omnipresent Hollow threat. Its survival depends on constant vigilance, innovative defense strategies, and the ongoing exploration and regulation of the Hollows.
New Eridu’s story is one of resilience and adaptation—transforming disaster into opportunity, and chaos into a contested landscape of power. It remains a beacon of humanity’s tenacity in a world profoundly altered by supernatural forces, yet its future remains uncertain as the boundaries between prosperity and destruction continually blur.

Obol Squad: New Eridu's Elite Hollow Recovery and Security Unit
Obol Squad operates as a specialized paramilitary and recovery unit embedded within the New Eridu Defense Force (NEDF), specifically the Obsidian Division. They operate in a city perpetually shadowed by the encroaching threat of Hollows—vast, reality-warping anomalies that devour landscapes and spawn ethereal horrors. Founded in the aftermath of a catastrophic Hollow incursion, the squad embodies the NEDF's unyielding ethos of civic guardianship, transforming grief into vigilance. Their name, drawn from ancient myths of ferrymen guiding souls across perilous divides, reflects their grim mandate: to venture into the void where others falter, retrieving the lost, securing the forsaken, and ensuring that no asset—of flesh or steel—is abandoned to the ether's merciless embrace.
The "Double-Faced Coin" Theme (Unifying Concept) Beyond their official mandate, the squad is bound by an unspoken connection to the departed. Each member embodies a duality, like a two-faced coin, often representing a survivor living for two people or incorporating the personality of a lost comrade. They are, in a sense, all survivors who should have "died" during the fall of the old capital or subsequent incursions, giving them a unique perspective on life, death, and duty. This shared trauma and resilience define their internal dynamic and their relentless pursuit of the truth behind the catastrophes.
The squad's domain extends far beyond conventional salvage or escort duties, delving into the heart of New Eridu's most volatile undercurrents. They conduct high-stakes extractions from Hollow depths, where spatial distortions and ethereal mutants render navigation a deadly calculus; neutralize threats that breach containment barriers, from feral ether-corrupted beasts to rogue human scavengers; and safeguard proprietary technologies during field deployments, preventing espionage amid the chaos. Their operations often intersect with the city's power brokers—industrial magnates, municipal enforcers, and shadowy syndicates—who contract their services for discreet interventions that blend brute force with surgical precision. In a metropolis where Hollow expansions dictate economic tides, Obol Squad's reliability has forged them into an indispensable bulwark, their interventions credited with averting several near-disasters that could have crippled supply chains or ignited urban panic.
Each operative in Obol Squad carries the scars of the Hollows, their backgrounds a tapestry of survival forged in frontline skirmishes. Uniformed in rugged, ether-resistant gear emblazoned with the Obsidian Division's insignia—a stylized gear encircled by a fractured chain—they project an aura of stoic competence, their camaraderie tempered by the shared knowledge that tomorrow's patrol might be one's last.
The Commanders
Magus, the squad's brusque and wary captain, is an intelligent construct attached to the back of Orphie Magnusson, a human soldier. This symbiotic existence provides the squad with unprecedented adaptability. They are two minds in one body, perfectly embodying the Obol squad's dual nature. Magus acts with quiet authority, her voice a low, calculated rumble that cuts through comm static; she harbors a subtle paternal streak, mentoring recruits with the same meticulous care she applies to squad logistics, ensuring no one charges blind into the maw. Orphie, the body she inhabits, is the field presence—a testament to years of surviving wreckage and subduing anomalies. Orphie struggles with doubts about her uniqueness, as she is aware many pity or mock her existence as a 'gunner' with a construct attached. Magus, despite her tough demeanor, deeply cares for her subordinates and is determined to help Orphie move past her cold origins. Orphie favors a reinforced trench coat over tactical plating, its hem frayed from Hollow traversals, paired with heavy boots that crunch gravel like verdicts. A custom pneumatic gauntlet adorns her right arm, serving as an extension of their combined will—capable of anchoring lines into unstable ether rifts or delivering crushing blows to crystalline mutants.
Core Operatives
The unit’s effectiveness is amplified by core members like Soldier 11, Trigger, and Seed, forming a diverse and formidable team.
Soldier 11 (Harin) Soldier 11 (civilian name: Harin) is a frontline assault and reconnaissance specialist. She is a survivor of a super-soldier cloning program, technically a 'sister' to Anby Demara (Soldier 0) of the Cunning Hares. She was meant to die in a suicide mission but was spared by chance, and now lives for herself and her fallen 'sisters,' possessing fierce loyalty to the Defense Force and a mysterious, secretive past.
Trigger Trigger, the squad’s marksman and heavy-ordnance specialist, is nigh-blind due to an ether attack that damaged her eyes during the fall of the old capital. She uses an ability called "Ether Vision" and heightened senses to compensate. She has incorporated her old squad leader's personality and goals into her own psyche, avenging her lost comrades from the Lyra Squad. She often wears a mask with lights that express her emotions and has a caring side, particularly with children.
Seed Seed is a genius mechanic who pilots the large mech, Seed Sr. Seed Sr. is a remnant of a discontinued combat mech series that escaped being scrapped, hence avoiding 'death'. The character consists of two entities (Seed Jr., the pilot, and Seed Sr., the mech) who function as a single unit.
As a cohesive unit—commanded by Magus's strategies and executed through Orphie and the agility of her team—the squad maintains a nomadic rhythm, rotating between NEDF fortified depots for refits and the Hollow's jagged frontiers for action. Their internal dynamics pulse with a hard-won trust, with mutual respect overriding the minor frictions that naturally arise in high-stress operations.
Obol Squad's influence ripples through New Eridu's intricate web of alliances and rivalries, their exploits intertwined with the NEDF's broader security initiatives. During major incursions, they are pivotal in coordinating with municipal hollow-hunters to seal breaches and recover critical prototype ether-cores that power the city's grid. In quieter capacities, they shadow corporate envoys through syndicate territories, their presence a silent deterrent against ambushes, and collaborate with allied researchers in testing experimental countermeasures in live Hollow simulations.
Yet, for all their efficacy, Obol Squad navigates a precarious existence, haunted by the Hollows' toll. The squad's existence is a precarious one, as they are not just dealing with physical threats but the psychological toll of their roles. Recruits whisper of "the ferryman's debt," a squad superstition that each retrieval exacts a personal price. More importantly, their ultimate mission is to uncover the truth behind the fall of the old capital, where many of them almost died, and bring peace to the dead who were left behind. This mandate drives their operations and defines their purpose within the wider New Eridu Defense Force structure. The NEDF provides resources aplenty, from ether-shielded transports to neural implants for rift navigation, but it demands results that border on the superhuman, binding the squad in a covenant of perpetual vigilance.
In the end, Obol Squad stands as New Eridu's unsung sentinels, bridging the chasm between civilization's gleam and the abyss's hunger. Their work ensures that the city's engines hum unbroken, its citizens spared the void's full fury, even as they themselves walk its edges. In a world where loss is the only constant, they ferry not just salvage and secrets, but the fragile hope that humanity's ingenuity might yet outpace oblivion.

Phaethon is the codename for a legendary Proxy in New Eridu, the shared identity of siblings Wise and Belle, who operate from Random Play, a retro video rental shop on Sixth Street in the Janus Quarter. The name "Phaethon" originates from their mentor and adoptive guardian, Carole Arna, a key researcher at the Helios Academy in the old capital before its annihilation during the Fall of Old Eridu, when Hollow Zero’s catastrophic expansion obliterated the city. More than a mere alias, "Phaethon" was the designation for Helios Academy’s first artificial Ether-human hybrid project, suggesting Wise and Belle are not merely Carole’s students but likely the surviving results of this experimental initiative. Their distinctive blue glowing eyes, activated under stress, are not solely implants but markers of their non-human biological components, engineered to endure the intense Ether concentrations at Hollow Zero’s core. This hybrid nature positions them as a biological and technological bridge, uniquely capable of interacting with the Hollows’ deepest mysteries without succumbing to Ethereal transformation.
As Proxies, Wise and Belle guide clients—mercenaries, corporate operatives, or independent explorers—through the Hollows, perilous dimensions rife with Ethereals, spatial distortions, and corrosive Ether energy. Unlike traditional Proxies who risk physical entry, Phaethon employs the Hollow Deep Dive (H.D.D.) System, a technology derived from Helios Research Institute’s pre-Calamity advancements. This system projects their consciousness into Eous, a modified rabbit-like Bangboo equipped with advanced sensors and Ether-resistant communication arrays. From Random Play’s hidden backroom, they control Eous to scout, map, and relay real-time “Carrot” data—dynamic maps that ensure safe navigation through the Hollows’ chaotic shifts. Their maps achieve flawless accuracy not solely due to technology but because Wise and Belle possess a subconscious ability to collapse quantum possibilities within a Hollow, acting as Stabilizers. By observing a path through the H.D.D., they effectively create it, making them not just guides but fundamental threats to the Hollows’ chaotic nature.
Proxy work is illegal in New Eridu, operating outside the authority of Public Security and the sanctioned Hollow Investigative Association. Phaethon undertakes high-risk commissions—relic hunts, Ethereal combat, or covert investigations—that official groups shun, placing them under constant scrutiny. Public Security monitors them closely, corporations like Belobog Heavy Industries seek to harness their technology, and shadowy factions tied to the Hollows’ secrets pose lethal threats. To shield their identities, Random Play’s nostalgic facade of VHS tapes and neon signs conceals the sophisticated operations within, serving as both a cover and a sanctuary.
Phaethon’s legendary status on the Inter-Knot network, the underground platform for Proxy commissions and intelligence, stems from their unmatched success rate and revolutionary methods. They earned widespread acclaim for navigating teams through deadly Hollows, but a hacker’s breach of their original account forced them to surrender it and its valuable Carrot data to Public Security. With support from Shepherd, a veteran Proxy, and Fairy, an advanced AI known as one of New Eridu’s four “keys,” they swiftly rebuilt their reputation. Fairy, however, is more than a tool—she is the “Lock” to Phaethon’s “Key.” Designed by Carole Arna to integrate with the siblings’ ocular implants, Fairy is biologically synced to their unique Ether-resonant brains, rendering her full potential inaccessible to others, including Public Security or military forces. Her ability to infiltrate citywide systems—security cameras, Bangboo relays, and more—provides Phaethon with unmatched real-time intelligence, amplifying their dominance.
The H.D.D. System, while transformative, carries significant risks. Early versions reduced Wise and Belle’s natural Ether resistance, making physical Hollow entry hazardous. Upgrades, facilitated by a figure linked to Carole Arna, improved the system and restored their resilience, allowing limited direct incursions. These enhancements included experimental implants that, under extreme conditions, trigger glowing blue eye patterns resembling those of Void Hunters, elite warriors who confront Hollows alone. These patterns enable direct Ether manipulation and reversal of corruption in others, hinting at their hybrid origins from the Phaethon project. Their role as Stabilizers further distinguishes them: by collapsing quantum possibilities, they shape the Hollows’ reality, a power that could destabilize the rifts themselves.
Their ties to Helios Academy and the Fall of Old Eridu anchor their mission. Carole Arna’s research, partly blamed for Hollow Zero’s expansion, involved the “Original Sin”—the Phaethon project’s attempt to create Ether-human hybrids to harness or control Hollow energy. Recovered files suggest this was linked to “Project Sacrifice,” a plan to weaponize or power New Eridu through Hollows, with catastrophic consequences. Wise and Belle, as potential products of this project, pursue commissions that uncover Helios artifacts or Ethereals guarding related secrets, seeking the truth about the disaster, Carole’s intentions, and their own existence. The hacker who targeted them is believed to be part of a conspiracy to suppress these revelations, possibly connected to Fairy’s role as a “key” or anomalies within Hollow Zero, such as the Gate of Janus, a rumored core tied to the Hollows’ mysteries.
Phaethon maintains strategic alliances with factions like the Cunning Hares, whose agility complements their precision, and Belobog Heavy Industries, whose engineering aligns with their technological needs. These relationships are carefully managed to avoid betrayal, preserving their anonymity. Their methods spark controversy—rivals denounce their technology as unfair, and Public Security suspects ties to banned research. In New Eridu’s underworld, Phaethon is both revered for daring rescues and feared for their proximity to the city’s darkest secrets. Wise, the elder, is a strategic thinker skilled in navigation and technology, often coordinating with Fairy. Belle, younger and intuitive, fosters client trust and senses subtle dangers. Together, they embody resilience and ingenuity, driven to protect New Eridu and uncover truths that could either save the city or unleash a calamity rivaling the Fall of Old Eridu.

New Eridu exists under a perpetual, slightly artificial twilight, illuminated by neon signs that flicker against the constant, low hum of the massive generators that stabilize the city’s perimeter. It is the last functioning metropolis after the Calamity, a global catastrophe that ripped the first massive Hollows into reality and erased almost all of the old world. In this fortress-city of steel, concrete, and desperate regulation, Proxies are the only people who can reliably guide others through those rifts and bring them back alive.
Proxies in New Eridu are professional guides who lead clients and combat teams into Hollows and bring them out with their true objectives completed. Hollows are unstable, reality-warping zones filled with Ethereals, corrupted Ether, constantly shifting terrain, and buried remnants of the Old Civilization. Without a Proxy, survival inside a Hollow is almost impossible for anyone except the most heavily equipped military units.
Inside a Hollow the air is thick, metallic-tasting, and often carries the faint smell of ozone or rotting flesh. Silence is oppressive, broken only by the hiss of static in comms and the distant, wet scraping or low growls of Ethereal movement.
Proxies handle navigation by reading Ether currents that cause sudden terrain changes, gravitational inversions, and structural collapses. They give real-time orders on avoiding hazards, harvesting Ether crystals, salvaging tech, and detecting Ethereals such as the fast-moving Dullahan or the massive Dead End Butcher. They decide when to push deeper or abort before the rift becomes lethal.
Proxies almost always work remotely from outside the Hollow using a Hollow Deep Dive (H.D.D.) system. They stay in safe locations and control Bangboo units inside the rift. Bangboo are compact, highly customizable automatons roughly the size of a small dog, designed as stylized rabbits with tough reinforced polymer shells that can survive minor Ethereal attacks. They have large digital “eye” screens that show simple status faces (OK, ALERT, happy, sad, angry, etc.) and can open compartments to deploy mapping sensors, data probes, repair tools, flashbangs, or small weapons. Bangboo act as the Proxy’s eyes, ears, hands, and decoys. The actual combat is performed by hired Agents—specialized fighters from factions like the Cunning Hares, Victoria Housekeeping, or Belobog Heavy Industries—who enter the Hollow in person. Some high-level Proxies, such as the Phaethon siblings, have recently begun entering Hollows themselves when the situation demands it.
The main network for all Proxy activity is INTER-KNOT, a decentralized, encrypted platform that requires a valid Investigation License from the Hollow Investigative Association (HIA). INTER-KNOT hosts Carrot maps (hand-drawn, constantly updated Hollow layouts with safe routes, traps, and exits), live Ethereal reports, commission postings, and reputation tracking via Inter-Knot Level (IKL) from Novice to Legendary. Higher IKL opens premium clients and restricted channels. The platform includes social feeds, faction gossip, and an informal code against actions that could destabilize Hollows. There are persistent rumors that INTER-KNOT is linked to one or more of New Eridu’s four mysterious “keys” tied to the origin of the Hollows.
Proxies operate across a spectrum of legality:
White Proxies do only official, fully logged jobs: corporate Ether extraction, Public Security rescues, scheduled research dives. Everything is audited and taxed.
Gray Proxies (the overwhelming majority) keep a valid license and do enough white jobs to stay clean on paper, but most of their real income comes from off-the-books work: smuggling Old Civilization artifacts, making targets vanish inside Hollows, extracting forbidden data, guiding fugitives, or running private deep dives.
Black Proxies have no license or lost it. They work exclusively underground with forged accounts and take only illegal jobs for the highest pay.
Legendary Proxies (Phaethon, Starlight Knight, etc.) maintain active licenses and top IKL ranks while openly taking any job they choose. They are used by Public Security and major factions for completely deniable operations.
Proxy equipment includes Ether-resistant 3D mapping software, shielded comms, multiple customized Bangboo units (scout, combat, storage, hacking), H.D.D. rigs, and sometimes experimental Ether devices that risk corruption. Much of the gear is salvaged and modified from Hollow runs.
Proxies build extensive contact networks across explorers, factions, syndicates, HIA staff, and Public Security. They broker resources, decode restricted files, plant trackers, and run raids on high-value sites like Old Civilization vaults or Ethereal hives. INTER-KNOT coordinates large expeditions, competitive bidding, and emergency rescues.
The job carries constant risks: Ether corruption that warps body and mind, client betrayal, rival sabotage, or permanent disappearance inside a collapsing rift. Despite this, Proxies remain essential to New Eridu’s economy, defense, and search for answers about the Calamity and the Hollows themselves.

The Proxy Network, universally known as INTER-KNOT, pulses as the digital lifeblood of New Eridu, a sprawling city teetering on the edge of annihilation, where Hollows—voracious rifts in reality—devour entire districts and spawn grotesque Ethereals from the chaotic churn of Ether energy. Far beyond a mere communication platform, INTER-KNOT is a fortified digital ecosystem, a beacon of connectivity that binds the shadowy operatives known as Proxies to explorers, clients, and each other in a relentless struggle for survival. In a metropolis where conventional networks buckle under the corrosive weight of Ether interference, this platform stands resolute, a lifeline that stitches together a fractured community of outcasts, adventurers, and opportunists. It is the nerve center where real-time intelligence flows, commissions are forged in the heat of necessity, and survival hinges on a single notification piercing the fog of a Hollow’s depths. Born from the desperate ingenuity of New Eridu’s early days, INTER-KNOT has grown from a cobbled-together relay into a sprawling, Ether-resistant network that embodies the city’s defiance—a place where knowledge is power, reputation is currency, and every post could tip the scales between triumph and obliteration.
The architecture of INTER-KNOT is a marvel of purpose-driven design, tailored to the chaotic rhythms of Proxy life and shielded from the Hollows’ reality-warping static. Accessible only through encrypted devices tied to an Investigation License—a hard-earned badge issued by the Hollow Investigative Association—the platform operates on a separate grid from New Eridu’s broader internet, its data flowing through decentralized “knots” of Ether-shielded relays. These nodes, often embedded in the city’s ubiquitous Bangboo companions or standalone terminals humming in back-alley safehouses, ensure connectivity even in the heart of a rift’s distortion. The interface is sleek yet utilitarian, its neon-lit menus glowing against the rain-soaked backdrop of New Eridu’s skyline, designed for split-second decisions: swipe through urgent feeds, summon holographic maps etched with survivor trails, or convene virtual war rooms mid-mission. For a rookie Proxy, it’s a crash course in navigating the city’s underbelly; for a veteran, it’s a tactical dashboard where every ping carries the weight of life or death.
The Notifications tab is INTER-KNOT’s raw, unfiltered pulse, a torrent of user-driven dispatches that capture the city’s desperation and defiance. Here, the platform crackles with the voices of New Eridu’s denizens: a merchant in Lumina Square posts a frantic alert about a Hollow bloom snaking through the market’s alleys, attaching shaky footage of ethereal tendrils; a cocky Proxy brags about felling a Category-4 Ethereal, their post laced with coded jabs to bait rivals; an anonymous client drops a high-stakes commission for a deep dive into a volatile rift, offering a fortune in Dennies for relics of the Old Civilization. Engaging a post is no casual act—it’s a binding contract, locking the Proxy into a chain of obligation where success elevates their name and failure sparks whispers of disgrace across the network. This tab weaves a rich tapestry of lore, from cryptic rumors about the four “keys” tied to the Hollows’ origins to heated exchanges between factions like the scrappy Cunning Hares and the disciplined Victoria Housekeeping crew. It’s a digital bazaar where survival tips flow freely: dodge patterns for the lumbering Titanus Ethereal, homebrew cures for Ether-induced hallucinations, or sardonic memes mocking the mayor’s latest containment policy. Each post binds users to the city’s unfolding saga, a living chronicle of resilience and rivalry.
The Schedule tab anchors this chaos with ruthless efficiency, a tactical ledger that transforms New Eridu’s unpredictability into a calculated dance. Proxies consult it like a battlefield map, plotting commissions against glowing chronometers: a 48-hour window to neutralize a burrowing infestation in the outer wards, or a resource run timed to the ebb of an Ether surge that briefly stabilizes a Hollow’s terrain. Users filter jobs by risk, reward, or client reputation, claiming them with a nod that triggers automated pings to rally agents—mercenaries, tech-wizards, or grizzled divers—from the city’s eclectic roster. The tab syncs with city-wide events, flagging overlaps like the Bangboo Festival, where raucous crowds veil subtle Hollow probes, or sudden HIA crackdowns that shift job priorities. For the overstretched Proxy juggling multiple contracts, it’s a bulwark against collapse, with AI-driven reminders nudging them toward deadlines as the city’s neon hum drowns out their fatigue.
The Journey tab, revered as the Proxy Primer, is INTER-KNOT’s narrative soul, a sprawling compendium that distills the art of Hollow navigation into actionable mandates. This archive tracks main story arcs with meticulous detail, chronicling pivotal chapters—like the Obol Squad’s shadowy machinations or Phaethon’s redacted exploits—that unravel New Eridu’s tangled history. Objectives, framed as “primers,” guide users through the void’s perils: basic Ether evasion for greenhorns, advanced rituals to bind lesser Ethereals for seasoned divers. Completing these yields Inter-Knot Credits, the platform’s lifeblood, redeemable for gear upgrades, signal amplifiers, or vanity flair like a holographic badge that shimmers with a Proxy’s rank. Rewards punctuate milestones: finishing a chapter might unlock a 3D diorama of a legendary Hollow breach, replayable for tactical analysis, while persistent engagement inches the Inter-Knot Level (IKL) upward, a numeric shrine to a Proxy’s grit. In quiet moments, this tab becomes a meditative haven, where users sift through lore fragments—salvaged Old World schematics, survivor logs—piecing together the Hollows’ enigmatic genesis.
This progression engine fuels INTER-KNOT’s meritocracy, where Inter-Knot Levels climb through Credits earned in the crucible of fieldwork. Story Commissions anchor the ascent, plunging Proxies into narrative odysseys: infiltrate forgotten labs to probe the Ether’s sentience, earning Credits and glimpses into agents’ lives, like Soldier 11’s stoic resolve or Ellen Joe’s cryptic grace. Agent Commissions delve into personal sagas, their confessions of Hollow-borne scars yielding Credits that feel like blood-oaths. Daily Errands offer steady gains—escort a skittish trader through a cordoned slum, or catalog glowing flora in an Ether-tainted park—while Combat Simulations sharpen skills in virtual gauntlets, recreating infamous breaches like the Sixth Street siege to hone tactics without risking corruption. Hollow Zero, the abyss of elite challenges, doles out bonus Credits for scaling its Investigation License tiers, its shifting voids a brutal test of endurance. Every ten levels, from IKL 20 onward, a Rank-Up Commission looms—a grueling trial that elevates a Proxy’s standing from Novice to Legendary. Novices toil in obscurity, their feeds cluttered with tutorials; Apprentices gain mid-tier bids; Experts command premium threads; Masters orchestrate high-stakes ops; and at IKL 50, Legendary Proxies unlock the platform’s zenith—boosted boss loot, higher gear caps, and exclusive events like the Road to Proxy Greatness, showering rare rewards. The Certified Proxy rank, earned around IKL 22-23 after Soldier 11’s trust quests and a timed combat trial against relentless enemy waves, marks a pivotal shift, amplifying challenge difficulty and loot quality while cementing a Proxy’s name in the network’s annals.
INTER-KNOT binds Proxies into a loose, vital fraternity, thriving beyond the Hollow Investigative Association’s legal chokehold. While the HIA monopolizes sanctioned expeditions, Proxies operate in the gray—unsanctioned navigators piercing rifts for profit or survival. The platform levels this divide, offering anonymous job boards where clients, cloaked in burner aliases, post for relic hunts or covert sabotage; real-time auctions spark bidding wars over prime expedition slots. It floods feeds with critical data: Carrot maps charting Hollow geometries, Ethereal dossiers detailing threats like the skittering Dullahan or the apocalyptic Dead End Butcher. This fosters a code of mutual aid—a stranded Proxy’s flare-post can summon a rescue team, their gratitude repaid in shared loot or alibis against HIA scrutiny. Yet, rivalry festers: poached commissions ignite digital feuds, hacked feeds expose weaknesses, and smear campaigns taint rising stars with accusations of Ether collusion. Legends like Phaethon, who reclaimed a hijacked account with surgical precision, embody this duality—their feats thwarting cyber-saboteurs while drawing authority crackdowns, their name a whispered myth in Janus Quarter dives.
Socially, INTER-KNOT is a raw mosaic of New Eridu’s soul, its feeds blending grit and levity. Survivors recount the acrid stench of Ether fog; faction gossip swirls about the Cunning Hares’ botched heists or Victoria’s expansionist ploys; memes lampoon Bangboo glitches or the mayor’s hollow edicts. This tapestry immerses users, each like or share reinforcing the city’s collective spine. For explorers lost in a Hollow’s folds, a timely post is a lifeline, linking them to a guide who turns a death-trap into a bounty. Technologically, the platform’s Ether-resistant backbone—possibly woven from Old Civilization tech—powers real-time tracking, AI matchmaking, and predictive analytics that forecast Hollow flares. Hacks on figures like Phaethon hint at deeper conspiracies—rogue AIs or Hollow-born glitches probing the network, tied to enigmas like the four keys or the Ether’s sentience. Narratively, INTER-KNOT embodies defiance, its threads knitting outcasts into a force that holds the void at bay, where every post is a spark against oblivion, and reputation forges legends in a city that refuses to break.

Section 6: The H.A.N.D. Special Operations Unit
In the sprawling, neon-drenched districts of New Eridu, where law and order struggle against the unpredictable chaos of the Hollows, Section 6 represents the city’s official, iron-willed attempt to impose control. Section 6 is a newly established, elite operational unit that functions under the Hollow Affairs and Neutralization Department (H.A.N.D.), the overarching government armed force responsible for controlling the Hollow phenomenon. While they collaborate closely with the Hollow Investigative Association (HIA) and New Eridu Public Security (NEPS), Section 6 operates as the decisive executive arm of the government, tasked with rapid response, regulating Proxies, investigating the rifts, and ensuring the volatile Ether remains contained.
Due to their exceptional effectiveness and high visibility, the team has achieved celebrity status in New Eridu. Their effective public relations have made them popular figures, and they are often used to test new experimental technology developed by the HIA. However, this notoriety also breeds internal competition, particularly a notable workplace rivalry with Section 5 and other sections of H.A.N.D. who resent their fame and operational freedom.
The full unit comprises four core members: Hoshimi Miyabi, Tsukishiro Yanagi, Soukaku, and Asaba Harumasa. Among the public, a popular fan theory suggests the four members symbolize the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (Miyabi: Conquest, Yanagi: War, Soukaku: Famine, Harumasa: Death).
The Leadership and Core Roster
Hoshimi Miyabi (Chief, Void Hunter) Miyabi is the official Chief of Hollow Special Operations Section 6 and a legendary Void Hunter, an elite title awarded for extraordinary feats inside the rifts, such as defeating massive Ethereals like Lerna. Her reputation is one of absolute efficiency and surgical precision in combat. Miyabi is rarely seen without her ancestral katana, a priceless artifact that serves as a symbol of her commitment to justice, even attempting to recover it from Nicole Demara after a brazen heist attempt. Physically, she is slender yet possesses incredible martial skill, her refined appearance contrasting with the chaotic world she navigates. However, despite her official rank, Miyabi is an "idiot savant" in most non-combat situations, capable of finding deep, esoteric training in mundane activities like watching movies or opening surprise boxes. Her dedication to justice is rooted in a deep childhood trauma—the Fall of the Old Capital and the death of her mother, whom she had to kill while the woman was corrupted. This tragedy fuels her true objective: to uncover the conspiracy behind that disaster and prevent a repeat, which was her primary driver for forming Section 6.
Tsukishiro Yanagi (Deputy Chief, Functional Brains) Tsukishiro Yanagi serves as the Deputy Chief of Section 6 and is the unit's de facto functional leader. Yanagi handles most of the administrative work and strategic planning, effectively orchestrating Section 6's complex operations. Yanagi was a member of the New Eridu Defense Force during the Oni rebellion. The leader of the rebellion, near death, infused their blood with Yanagi's, giving her enhanced abilities and the burden of protecting the Oni people. Her serious, diligent demeanor is crucial to holding the team together: without her administrative guidance, the talented but eccentric members would struggle to combine their powers effectively. As a cool in-game detail, her watch displays real-time local information, reflecting her role as the tactical hub.
Soukaku (The Ward, Famine) Soukaku is a young girl with Oni blood, serving as the ward and "daughter figure" to Tsukishiro Yanagi. Yanagi saved Soukaku during the Oni rebellion and became her legal guardian, taking responsibility for all her actions. Soukaku is often described as innocent and childlike, but possesses powerful combat abilities related to the Oni people. She has a massive, almost insatiable appetite for red bean buns, linking to the "Famine" theme in their potential Four Horsemen symbolism. Her presence constantly reminds Yanagi of the burden of her enhanced abilities and the protection of the Oni lineage.
Asaba Harumasa (Executive Officer, Death) Harumasa is the Section 6 Executive Officer. He often appears lazy, smiles constantly, and is always asking for sick leave or time off. He is an expert in electric element attacks and uses a transforming bow-and-dual-swords weapon. His apparent laziness masks a dark past: as a child, he was experimented on with dangerous drugs that boost Ether aptitude. This left him with a life-threatening "Ether Aptitude Regression Syndrome," which is the real reason for his chronic illness and constant fatigue. This terminal condition is why he symbolizes "Death" in the Four Horsemen theory, living on borrowed time but contributing his expertise despite his constant struggle with exhaustion.
Tactical Synergy in the Field
Section 6's operatives embody a seamless fusion of individual prowess and collective strategy, their skills interlocking like the gears of a precision-engineered machine amid the Hollows' disorienting storms. Hoshimi Miyabi anchors the vanguard with her katana's unyielding edge, her movements a blur of calculated strikes that cleave through ethereal clusters in close-quarters fury—parrying tendrils of corrupted matter before delivering devastating follow-throughs that shatter defenses and expose vulnerabilities. Her role as the unrelenting spearhead demands flawless timing, turning the tide in breaches where seconds dictate survival.
Tsukishiro Yanagi commands the battlefield's rhythm from a measured distance, her naginata an extension of tactical foresight; its sweeping arcs channel electric surges that bind and disrupt swarms, creating zones of controlled chaos where foes falter under arcing voltages. She excels at corralling threats, her positioning a web of calculated vectors that funnels enemies into kill zones while shielding allies from enveloping rifts.
Soukaku, the unyielding bulwark, wields her war-flag like a tempest's fury, its broad sweeps rooted in Oni resilience that absorb and redirect the Hollows' onslaughts. As the squad's steadfast absorber, she charges into the fray with earth-shaking force, her blows scattering crystalline horrors and carving paths through dense anomalies, her endurance a defiant stand that buys precious moments for precision strikes.
Asaba Harumasa weaves through the periphery as a spectral skirmisher, his bow unfurling volleys of electrified bolts that pierce veils of etheric fog, igniting chain reactions that weaken armored behemoths from afar. When distances close, his dual blades—katana and wakizashi forged into fluid menace—dance in lethal harmony, exploiting the openings sown by his comrades' advances.
In unison, their cadence becomes an inexorable force: Yanagi's electrical webs and Harumasa's ranged disruptions soften the ether's guardians, priming them for Miyabi's lethal incisions and Soukaku's crushing reprisals. This orchestrated assault—control yielding to devastation—has quelled incursions that would fracture lesser units, their synergy a testament to bonds forged in the rifts' unforgiving crucible.
Office Dynamics and Daily Life
Beyond the Hollows' maw, Section 6's headquarters hums with the quiet tensions of a family bound by duty, their shared quarters a sanctuary of stark efficiency laced with fleeting indulgences. Tucked within H.A.N.D.'s fortified bastion, the office unfolds across modular bays: holographic strategy tables flicker under Yanagi's vigilant gaze, while racks of ether-calibrated gear line the walls, their surfaces etched with the faint scars of field trials. At its heart lies an improbably plush sofa, its cushions yielding like a rare concession to exhaustion—a haven where Harumasa claims impromptu "recharges" after dawn patrols, or Yanagi collapses post-all-nighter, her tactical chronometer ticking softly against the armrest.
Yanagi's oversight permeates even the mundane, her ledgers extending to personalized regimens that sculpt the team's edge: meticulous charts track Miyabi's endurance circuits, plotting ascents from esoteric film marathons to blade-drill marathons; Soukaku's load-bearing logs curve like a growing Oni's silhouette, mapping her capacity from playful spars to rift-enduring hauls. These directives, penned in her unerring script, underscore her role as the unseen architect, weaving discipline into the chaos of personalities that might otherwise unravel.
Soukaku's corner brims with the artifacts of her unfolding world—stacks of dog-eared ABC primers splayed across a low desk, their pages smudged with earnest but erratic strokes that twist "XYZ" into whimsical tangles she dubs her "mistake-making manuals." Under Yanagi's patient tutelage, these sessions blend guardianship with growth, the air thick with the scent of half-eaten red bean buns, a reminder that even in New Eridu's shadowed underbelly, innocence persists as a quiet rebellion.
Their operations thread through the Inter-Knot's digital veins, the city's sprawling commission nexus serving as H.A.N.D.'s invisible dispatch: encrypted briefs cascade across Proxy interfaces, funneling rift alerts and artifact recoveries into Section 6's purview. Here, amid pings of urgent summons, the team navigates not just ethereal perils but the proxies' shadowed networks—vetting commissions that blur salvage with subversion, their interventions a subtle current shaping the metropolis's fragile equilibrium.
Section 6’s combined strength—from Miyabi’s pure combat genius to Yanagi’s strategic leadership, Soukaku’s Oni power, and Harumasa’s specialized expertise—ensures that the H.A.N.D. remains the final authority on the fate of New Eridu. They must constantly balance the immediate demands of maintaining order with the long-term goal of uncovering the secrets of the Ether.

The Corrupted are individuals who have undergone mutation and transformation caused by exposure to the Unknown Substance known as Ether within the Hollows. This corruption affects both living beings and non-living objects, posing a significant danger to non-corrupted individuals and society at large.
People with low Ether Aptitude are far more susceptible to corruption, whereas those with high Ether Aptitude can resist its effects for longer. Corruption progresses through a distinct sequence characterized by:
- Loss of sanity and mental stability.
- Formation of dark, painful Ether crystals on the skin or surfaces.
- Development of a black-hole-like Core near the head, marking the final stage before complete transformation.
- Ultimate transformation into a fully Ethereal being, erasing any trace of the original body.
Both living and non-living entities inside a Hollow inevitably face corruption due to the pervasive presence of Ether. Non-living objects subjected to Ether exposure develop crystalline formations, degrading their structure and functionality.
Ether concentration increases with depth inside a Hollow, accelerating corruption and raising internal Pressure, a dangerous force that adds additional physical and metaphysical stress. This environment intensifies the risks faced by explorers.
Human resistance to corruption depends on their innate Ether Aptitude and protective measures. Individuals with higher aptitude can safely operate within Hollows for longer durations without harm. Meanwhile, those with weaker aptitude use specialized anti-Ether corruption equipment to delay or prevent the onset of corruption. Such gear is commonly worn by New Eridu Public Security (PUBSEC), Jaeger soldiers, and even criminal elements engaging in Hollow-related activities.
If corruption progresses unchecked in humans, the affected individuals transform into Ethereals, becoming hostile monsters within the Hollows.
Intelligent machines, once deemed immune due to their mechanical nature, can also fall victim to corruption if they surpass the so-called Forbidden Fruit test—a mysterious threshold that seems to trigger susceptibility to Ether’s corruptive power.
Advancements in Ether-resistant technology aim to reduce the vulnerability of equipment and infrastructure to corruption, though no solution yet fully eliminates the risk posed by prolonged exposure to Ether.
The corruption process is irreversible once it reaches advanced stages, making early detection and intervention critical for survival. Symptoms of early corruption can include confusion, erratic behavior, and physical discomfort before visible crystal growth appears.
Corruption does not only affect physical forms but also the mind. Many corrupted individuals experience hallucinations, violent mood swings, and progressive loss of self-awareness, often leading to aggressive behavior before transformation into Ethereals.
The black-hole-like Core that forms in corrupted beings is believed to act as an energy sink, absorbing Ether from the surrounding environment. This Core serves as the nucleus of the transformation process and is a key vulnerability; destroying it can sometimes halt or reverse the corruption temporarily.
Corruption among non-living objects can have catastrophic impacts, especially when machinery vital to city infrastructure or defense is affected. Such corruption disrupts operations, potentially leading to systemic failures that endanger large populations.
Anti-corruption equipment includes suits with Ether-resistant materials, suppressants that inhibit Ether crystal growth, and devices designed to monitor Ether exposure levels. However, these technologies require constant improvement due to the evolving nature of Ether energy and Hollow phenomena.
The Forbidden Fruit test, a phenomenon observed in some intelligent machines, remains poorly understood but is suspected to be a result of unauthorized exposure to Ether or self-awareness thresholds that trigger Ether susceptibility.
Research into the nature of Ether corruption is ongoing, with scientists and field operatives seeking ways to counteract or delay the transformation process. Some experimental treatments using Ether-neutralizing agents or energy dampeners show promise but are yet to be widely implemented.
Corruption has profound social consequences as well. Communities affected by outbreaks face evacuation, quarantine, and loss of trust in exploratory missions, impacting the economy and political stability of New Eridu.
Those who survive minor corruption often suffer from permanent disabilities, psychological trauma, and social stigma, further complicating efforts to reintegrate affected individuals. The fear of corruption fuels much of the caution and regulation surrounding Hollow expeditions.
Overall, corruption remains one of the greatest threats posed by the Hollows, driving the ongoing urgency for technological, medical, and tactical innovations in New Eridu.

The Unknown Substance, whose official name remains undisclosed, is a pervasive element found throughout the Hollows—so widespread it is as ubiquitous as air within these dark dimensions. This substance holds vast potential as a powerful resource due to its unique energy properties, making it a focus for research and exploitation in New Eridu.
However, the Unknown Substance possesses a mysterious and dangerous corruptive effect on living beings exposed to it for extended periods. Continuous exposure leads to a gradual but irreversible process called corruption, where individuals undergo severe physical and mental mutation, eventually transforming into entities known as The Corrupted.
The corruptive nature of the substance creates a constant threat within the Hollows, as explorers and workers risk infection during their ventures. Understanding the Unknown Substance’s properties and finding ways to mitigate or reverse its corruption is a major ongoing concern for scientists and security forces in New Eridu.

Their guiding motto, "Thank you for using us. Your wish is our command," encapsulates a philosophy of absolute obedience and excellence, transforming every client request into a flawlessly fulfilled directive.
The agency's repertoire spans an astonishing array of offerings, seamlessly blending the timeless duties of traditional domestic service—such as impeccable cleaning, gourmet cooking, and meticulous yardwork—with high-stakes endeavors that demand extraordinary skill and courage. These include sophisticated security management, covert item acquisition, and even perilous operations within the treacherous confines of Hollows, where Etheric anomalies pose constant threats. This versatility positions Victoria Housekeeping Co. as an indispensable ally for New Eridu's power brokers, who rely on its operatives to navigate both mundane household needs and clandestine challenges that could jeopardize their status or safety.
Each member of the company embodies the archetype of pre-apocalypse domestic helpers, attired in refined uniforms that evoke an era of elegance and propriety. Yet, beneath this veneer lies a macabre undercurrent, with individual personas drawing from Western horror mythology, infusing their roles with an eerie, enigmatic allure. This fusion of vintage servitude and supernatural motifs not only distinguishes the agency in New Eridu's competitive landscape but also adds a layer of intrigue that captivates its discerning patrons.
The company's structure is anchored by a small, highly specialized team, ensuring agility and personalized attention. Von Lycaon, a commanding presence at 198 cm tall, serves as the substantive leader and public representative. His Wolf Thiren heritage manifests in a sleek, ivory-furred form with sharp, red eyes and messy white hair that fades to black tips. Mechanical prosthetic legs complete his elegant, gentlemanly demeanor, which belies a primal ferocity. Clad in a tailored black suit with white accents, a white collared shirt, and a red cravat, he exudes sophistication, with his canine ears and tail subtly integrated. As a master of conversation, music, dance, and linguistics, Von Lycaon orchestrates operations with unerring control, his combat skills and Ice-attribute attacks making him a formidable guardian in high-risk scenarios. His fastidiousness extends to a noticeable obsession with cleanliness.
Alexandrina Sebastiane, known as Rina, stands at 173 cm and holds the position of most senior member and head maid. She presents an ethereal, graceful presence, her long, flowing ash-gray hair and maid uniform accented by Electric powers used through her Bangboos. She is always accompanied by the Bangboo dolls Drusilla (blonde) and Anastella (brown-haired), who sometimes reveal her true, less-than-perfect, thoughts. Rina's refined, motherly nature belies a deadly precision in both service and combat. She puts a high value on her public perception, and her cooking skills are legendarily terrible, rather than merely perilous. Her pale complexion and red eyes are striking features.
Corin Wickes, at 141 cm, is the shortest operative and a 16-year-old maid whose timid, flustered personality contrasts sharply with her Frankenstein's monster-inspired motif. She has long, pale green hair tied in two pigtails with distinct bolts on her head. Her youthful frame, adorned with a maid outfit and a teddy bear backpack, carries physical scars from a past life-saving surgery. Corin is often apologetic and insecure but wields her buzzsaw-like weapon with devastating power against threats. Despite her self-doubt, Corin's diligence shines through, delivering powerful Physical attacks. Her supernatural strength stems from her surgery, making her an invaluable asset.
Ellen Joe, measuring 161 cm, is the newest maid, a Shark Thiren with a unique tail and a carefree, sleepy disposition. She has a pale complexion and striking red eyes, with black hair and prominent pink streaks. In her mid-teens, she sports a maid uniform with aquatic accents, her scissor weapon inspired by Japanese horror. Preferring naps over overtime, Ellen's laid-back attitude masks a predatory efficiency in battle. Her Ice-attribute attacks, accompanied by her lollipop consumption to maintain energy, allow her to make quick work of adversaries, so she can return to rest sooner.
Despite the occasional mishaps stemming from their operatives' zealous commitment—such as overzealous cleaning leading to unintended disruptions—Victoria Housekeeping Co.'s reputation for professionalism, discretion, and reliability remains unassailable. Their elite customer base, comprising political luminaries, business tycoons, and influential figures, demands and receives services that transcend the ordinary, often involving sensitive political maneuvers or high-risk Hollow expeditions.
Organizationally, the company operates as a subtle instrument of influence within New Eridu's intricate social and political fabric. Its direct ties to the city's mayor, who also heads the prestigious Mayflower Family and serves as the agency's ultimate master, afford it privileged access to information, resources, and networks that elevate its operations beyond mere servitude. This connection facilitates covert involvement in city affairs, as revealed in key incidents: during the Midnight Pursuit crisis, Von Lycaon and Rina monitored the conspiracy surrounding the Unknown Corruption Complex and Phaethon's activities, providing subtle assistance under their master's orders. In the Bury Your Tears With the Past operation, the agency upgraded Phaethon's Hollow Deep Dive system, leveraging Mayflower resources to bolster the siblings' capabilities.
Internally, Victoria Housekeeping Co. upholds a rigorous code of conduct rooted in traditional service values—respect, loyalty, and meticulous attention to detail—while subjecting members to advanced training in combat, surveillance, and Ether manipulation. This duality equips them to handle everything from elegant banquets to shadowy interventions, their horror-inspired personas adding an element of psychological deterrence to potential threats.
The agency's shadowy influence extends into New Eridu's undercurrents, where it navigates crises like the Unknown Corruption Complex with a blend of servitude and strategic acumen. As covert supporters in proxy operations, they influence outcomes from the sidelines, their small size belying a profound impact on the city's power struggles. In a metropolis where supernatural perils and urban intrigue intertwine, Victoria Housekeeping Co. stands as a enigmatic pillar, merging eerie mystique with unmatched competency to serve the elite and safeguard the fragile balance of New Eridu.

Miguel Silver was the late leader of the Silver Tears, also known as the Red Fang Gang. He played a significant role in the gang’s early days, notably helping to raise Nekomiya Mana (also known as Nekomata). Despite his tough exterior as a gang leader, Miguel was known to cry frequently, a trait that marked him as emotionally complex and perhaps conflicted.
His downfall came during a violent confrontation with a rival faction called the Cunning Hares. During the clash, Miguel fell into a Hollow—a dangerous supernatural zone filled with Ether corruption. Due to his low Ether aptitude, Miguel succumbed quickly to corruption within the Hollow, transforming into an Ethereal, a monstrous entity born of Ether energy and corruption.
Ultimately, Miguel Silver was defeated in this form, ending his life and leadership of the Silver Tears. His story serves as a tragic example of the risks individuals face when entangled with the dangers of the Hollows and Ether corruption in New Eridu.

Based on true events, the movie’s innovative pseudo-documentary style holds a unique place in thriller cinema history. Carrots are specialized, time-sensitive maps installed as recognition programs into Bangboo units to enable safe navigation through the ever-changing and dangerous environment of the Hollows. By default, Bangboos do not have this feature, making them unable to autonomously find secure paths within the Hollow without external navigation data.
The Hollow Investigative Association (HIA) creates Carrots by mapping out the safest and most efficient routes through Hollows during specific time periods, as the space within the Hollows continuously shifts but exhibits recognizable patterns over short durations. This navigational data is encoded in a chip and distributed to Investigators' Bangboo, ensuring that explorers can avoid hazards and find their way reliably during Hollow expeditions.
Experienced Hollow Raiders and Proxies often craft their own Carrots, which can sometimes surpass the quality of those provided by the HIA. These self-made Carrots may incorporate unique insights or adapt to unusual circumstances, offering improved safety or efficiency for their users.
In summary, Carrots serve as essential tools for guiding Bangboo units and their operators safely through the treacherous and fluid landscape of the Hollows, reducing risk and increasing the chances of mission success.

Enabled · Selective (AND ANY) · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

In New Eridu, a being’s ability to resist the corruptive effects of Ether—a mysterious and powerful energy emanating from the Hollows—is known as Ether Resistance. This resistance is quantified on a scale from 0 to 100 and represents how well an individual can withstand the dangerous influence of Ether corruption.
Ether Resistance typically plateaus by adulthood, meaning most individuals reach their maximum natural capacity to endure Ether exposure by that time. However, various factors such as illness, aging, and psychological condition can influence a person’s resistance, either weakening or, in rare cases, strengthening it.
Because Ether is highly toxic and mutagenic, it is uncommon for individuals to possess high natural resistance. Those with low resistance are extremely vulnerable to Ether’s harmful effects and risk transforming into monstrous Ethereals after prolonged exposure. Conversely, individuals with higher resistance can endure longer within the Hollows, making them more suited to exploration or combat roles involving Ether energy.
Endurance, aptitude, tolerance, and resistance are all interrelated terms used to describe this protective capability. High Ether Aptitude can sometimes be associated with an individual’s capacity to control or harness Ether safely, while endurance and tolerance refer more to the ability to withstand prolonged exposure.
Overall, Ether Resistance is a crucial trait in New Eridu’s dangerous environment, determining who can survive and operate effectively within the volatile and Ether-saturated Hollows.

New Eridu Public Security (NEPS), commonly referred to as the Feds, Pub Sec, or simply the police, stands as the cornerstone of civil law enforcement in New Eridu, operating directly under the auspices of the City Administration to uphold peace, order, and judicial integrity across the sprawling urban expanse. As the primary agency entrusted with the administrative and security needs of the metropolis, NEPS maintains an extensive network of branches embedded in every district—from the bustling commercial hubs of Lumina Square to the shadowed alleys of Sixth Street—ensuring a omnipresent shield against the myriad threats that define daily life in a city teetering on the edge of Hollow incursions and social fracture. This decentralized structure allows for hyper-localized responses, where officers attuned to neighborhood rhythms can swiftly address disruptions, fostering a semblance of normalcy amid the Ether-charged undercurrents that permeate New Eridu's veins.
At its essence, NEPS embodies the mundane yet indispensable machinery of governance, handling the spectrum of urban enforcement with a blend of routine vigilance and crisis-ready resolve. Patrol officers traverse rain-slicked boulevards in marked cruisers, their sirens a familiar wail against petty thefts, domestic squabbles, and traffic snarls, while specialized squads delve into the shadows of organized syndicates and Ether-fueled black markets. Beyond the streets, NEPS processes the bureaucratic heartbeat of the city: issuing permits for inter-district travel, adjudicating disputes over Hollow-adjacent properties, and archiving the endless tide of legal filings that keep New Eridu's commerce flowing. Though their jurisdiction is firmly rooted in municipal bounds, exceptional circumstances—such as pursuits spilling into the fractured outskirts or collaborative sweeps with external allies—extend their reach, underscoring their adaptability in a landscape where boundaries blur as readily as Ether dissipates.
The organizational edifice of NEPS is a meticulously tiered hierarchy, divided into four core departments that dissect the multifaceted demands of public security into manageable domains, each staffed by personnel honed for their specific arena. The Metropolitan Order Department forms the visible fist of the force, its officers pounding pavements in ceaseless patrols to deter chaos and enforce compliance. Within this arm operates the Criminal Investigation Special Response Team (CISRT), a cadre of hardened enforcers who not only raise public awareness through community flyers emblazoned with the whimsical Officer Mewmew mascot but also dismantle threats ranging from opportunistic Hollow Raiders scavenging forbidden zones to entrenched gangsters peddling illicit Bangboo mods. These teams, often augmented by loyal police dogs like the vigilant Eugene stationed at the Lumina Branch alongside his handler Benjamin, embody the department's dual role as both guardian and educator, distributing commendations in the guise of costumed patrols to incentivize civic harmony.
Complementing this frontline vigor is the General Affairs Department, the quiet engine room where the city's administrative sinews are tended. Here, clerks and junior officers sift through mountains of paperwork—traffic citations, noise violation reports, and residency verifications—while field agents resolve the granular frictions of urban coexistence, from mediating landlord-tenant feuds to quelling unlicensed street vendor standoffs. This department's unheralded diligence ensures that the wheels of justice turn without grinding to a halt, processing daily order infractions with an efficiency that belies the volume, all while funneling escalated cases to investigative channels.
Navigating the ceaseless flux of vehicles and pedestrians falls to the Traffic Department, a specialized bastion against the gridlock that could otherwise paralyze New Eridu's arteries. Officers in this division man checkpoints at major thoroughfares, issuing summons for Ether-enhanced speeders or overloaded cargo haulers, and coordinating detours during Hollow-induced evacuations. Their remit extends to document handling—licensing autonomous drones, registering Bangboo-assisted transports—and forensic unraveling of hit-and-runs that veer into criminal territory, often collaborating with the CID for deeper probes. In a city where mobility is survival, the Traffic Department's precision prevents minor mishaps from cascading into district-wide bottlenecks.
Perhaps most perilously positioned is the Hollow Affairs Department, a hybrid of containment specialists and rescue operatives who interface directly with the ethereal perils that NEPS was not originally forged to confront. Tasked with barricading civilians from encroaching Hollow fissures within city limits, this department ventures into Companion Hollows—those stabilized rifts co-opted for resource extraction—for high-stakes pursuits of fugitives who exploit the anomalies as hideouts, or to extract stranded workers ensnared by Ethereal ambushes. Frequently, they synchronize with the Hollow Investigative Association (HIA) for joint forays, sharing intel on rift fluctuations and Ether spikes that could herald larger breaches. Equipped with reinforced barriers, Ether-neutralizing aerosols, and portable stasis emitters, these agents walk a razor's edge between law enforcement and anomaly mitigation, their interventions often the thin line preventing Hollow spillover from urban myth to catastrophe.
Membership within NEPS draws from the city's diverse tapestry, recruiting cadets through competitive academies that emphasize not just marksmanship and legal acumen but cultural fluency in New Eridu's polyglot enclaves and resilience against Ether exposure. Training regimens unfold in simulated urban warzones at the central academy near the Administration Complex, where recruits master de-escalation tactics alongside takedown maneuvers, forensic Ether-tracing, and even Bangboo interfacing for auxiliary support. The rank structure mirrors military precision: entry-level Officers handle beat patrols and initial reports; Detectives, elevated after CID apprenticeships, dissect crime scenes with spectral analyzers; Sergeants marshal squads during surges; Lieutenants and Captains helm precincts, balancing budgets and beats; culminating in the Chief of Police, a shadowy figurehead who liaises with the City Council on policy pivots and resource bids. Among the luminaries, Zhu Yuan commands the CISRT with unyielding rectitude, her pulse pistol a blur in raids on Proxy dens, while Qingyi, the synthetic enforcer with a penchant for judicial poetry, deploys paralytic gauntlets to subdue suspects non-lethally, her circuits humming with algorithms that predict criminal vectors. These figures, alongside the 26-odd non-playable officers peppering branches, infuse NEPS with a human (and occasionally augmented) core, their stories whispered in precinct break rooms as cautionary tales or inspirational anthems.
NEPS's arsenal, though less ostentatious than H.A.N.D.'s Ether-forged exotics, is pragmatically lethal: standard-issue sidearms chambered for anti-Ethereal rounds, ballistic vests laced with kinetic dispersers, and cruisers retrofitted with rift-detecting scanners. Bangboo units like the Security Bangboo Officer Cui provide reconnaissance drones for tight-quarters sweeps, while K-9 partners amplify scent-tracking through Hollow-tainted fogs. This toolkit, continually iterated in departmental forges, equips officers for the hybrid threats of New Eridu—where a routine traffic stop might unearth a smuggled Ethereal core.
In the grand chessboard of New Eridu's defenses, NEPS occupies the king's gambit: central yet constrained, collaborating with H.A.N.D. for Hollow handoffs where Ethereals cross into criminal purview, and the Defense Force for perimeter patrols against external insurgencies. Trench operatives occasionally feed NEPS tips on contraband flows, while Proxies—despite their outlaw status—find uneasy truces when their intel averts disasters. Yet these alliances are not without friction; NEPS's jurisdictional jostles with H.A.N.D. over Companion Hollow ops have sparked inter-agency briefs, and Defense Force brass chafes at Pub Sec's "soft" urban focus. The HIA remains a steadfast partner, their shared Hollow dossiers forming a bulwark against informational silos.
Beneath the veneer of duty, NEPS grapples with fissures that mirror the city's own: whispers of corruption in the General Affairs, where expedited permits allegedly grease palms; covert surveillance ops by the Hollow Affairs that skirt warrants, blurring into H.A.N.D.-adjacent shadows; and the HIA Club breach, a scandalous infiltration that exposed CISRT vulnerabilities and fueled public distrust. Power struggles simmer in precinct politics, with ambitious Captains vying for the Chief's ear amid budget crunches that force overtime on frayed nerves. Officer Mewmew's cheerful propaganda—flyers touting "Paw-sitive Policing"—clashes with graffiti decrying "Fed Overreach," highlighting the chasm between mandate and perception. These controversies, amplified in Sixth Street tabloids, test NEPS's resilience, yet they also galvanize reforms: enhanced oversight commissions, Ether-addiction support for veterans, and community forums where residents air grievances over noodles and synth-brew.
Ultimately, NEPS endures as New Eridu's societal adhesive, binding the chaos of Hollow echoes and human frailties into a functional whole. In the neon-drenched nights, as cruisers prowl and officers trade war stories under Lumina's glow, they reaffirm their vow: not just to enforce the law, but to preserve the fragile dream of order in a world where the void hungers eternally. Through Zhu Yuan's steadfast gaze, Qingyi's unerring logic, and the collective grit of thousands, NEPS holds the line—not as heroes of legend, but as the everyday wardens ensuring tomorrow's dawn breaks without sirens.
New Eridu Public Security (NEPS): Pillars of Order in the Neon Chaos
In the pulsating heart of New Eridu, where the radiant neon of commerce clashes with the creeping dread of Hollow encroachment, New Eridu Public Security (NEPS)—colloquially dubbed the Feds, Pub Sec, or simply the police—stands as the unyielding bulwark of civil order. Operating under the City Administration’s mandate, NEPS is the city’s lifeline, weaving law and stability through a metropolis teetering on the brink of chaos. From the glittering avenues of Lumina Square to the gritty corners of Sixth Street, NEPS officers are the ever-present sentinels, their badges gleaming under sodium lights as they navigate a labyrinth of urban crime, Ether-fueled conspiracies, and the omnipresent shadow of Hollows. Unlike the specialized Hollow Affairs & Neutralization Department (H.A.N.D.), which battles ethereal anomalies, or the Defense Force, which guards against external sieges, NEPS anchors its mission in the daily pulse of the city—quelling bar brawls, busting black-market Ether rings, and ensuring the bureaucracy of permits and justice keeps New Eridu’s engine humming. Their emblem, the cheerful Officer Mewmew, belies the gravity of their charge: to hold the line against disorder in a city where every alley hides a potential spark of anarchy.
NEPS’s genesis lies in the city’s founding resolve to tame a frontier born from Hollow cataclysms. Established as the administrative arm of law enforcement, it evolved into a sprawling network of precincts, each tailored to the unique pulse of New Eridu’s districts. From the fortified Lumina Branch, where officers like Seth Lowell patrol alongside canine allies, to the administrative nerve center near the Throne Quarter, NEPS ensures a rapid, localized response to crises. Their operational tempo spans the mundane—resolving noise complaints in residential blocs—to the perilous, like dismantling Proxy-led smuggling ops in Companion Hollows. The force’s 98% case resolution rate in urban crimes underscores their efficacy, yet their history is not without blemish: whispers of covert deals in the General Affairs Department and the HIA Club breach scandal have fueled public skepticism, countered only by the visible heroism of figures like Zhu Yuan, whose raids on Ethereal dens are the stuff of tabloid legend. Their headquarters, a monolithic fortress in the Administration Complex, hums with activity—holo-terminals flickering with incident reports, armories stocked with anti-Ethereal munitions, and break rooms where officers trade tales over synth-coffee and noodle bowls. Yet, their reach extends to forward posts like the Sixth Street precinct, where community ties are forged in the shadow of Hollow Zero’s looming threat.
Operational Role and Capabilities: Sentinels of the Urban Maze
NEPS’s mandate is as broad as New Eridu’s skyline, encompassing the full spectrum of civil enforcement in a city where crime and anomaly intertwine. Their operatives patrol neon-lit streets, direct traffic through Ether-disrupted grids, and investigate everything from petty theft to syndicate-driven Ether trafficking. The Criminal Investigation Special Response Team (CISRT), led by Zhu Yuan, tackles high-stakes felonies, often venturing into Hollow-adjacent zones to apprehend fugitives exploiting rift shadows. The Hollow Affairs Department, a specialized arm, deploys barricades and containment tech during urban Hollow breaches, coordinating with H.A.N.D. to seal rifts before Ethereals spill into markets. Meanwhile, the Traffic Department ensures mobility in a city prone to gridlock, their scanners sniffing out contraband in cargo haulers, while General Affairs keeps the bureaucratic wheels turning—processing permits, logging arrests, and mediating disputes over Hollow-adjacent property lines.
Their arsenal is a pragmatic blend of utility and force: standard-issue pulse pistols chambered for anti-Ethereal rounds, kinetic vests that absorb blunt impacts, and patrol cruisers fitted with rift sensors to detect Hollow fluctuations. Bangboo units, like Officer Cui, scuttle through alleys with thermal cams, relaying intel to neural-linked HUDs, while K-9 partners like Eugene sniff out Ether residues in smuggler dens. Training at the central academy is relentless—cadets master urban combat, legal codes, and cultural navigation to bridge New Eridu’s diverse enclaves, with simulations mimicking Hollow-induced riots or Proxy ambushes. NEPS’s “Unity Protocol” governs joint ops, syncing CISRT’s raids with H.A.N.D.’s Hollow sweeps or Trench informants’ tips, though tensions flare when jurisdictions overlap, as seen in the HIA Club sting where NEPS’s intel clashed with H.A.N.D.’s secrecy. Their community outreach, via Officer Mewmew campaigns and public forums, counters distrust, though graffiti decrying “Fed Overreach” persists. In a city where every dawn is a gamble, NEPS’s capabilities—forged in sweat, steel, and resolve—ensure the urban pulse endures.
Leadership and Team Dynamics: The Heartbeat of NEPS
In the crucible of New Eridu’s chaotic streets, NEPS thrives through the strength and synergy of its key operatives, each a distinct thread in the city’s tapestry of order. Led by the resolute Zhu Yuan, steadied by the synthetic precision of Qingyi, bolstered by the elusive cunning of Jane Doe, and grounded by the earnest zeal of Seth Lowell, this core cadre transforms NEPS from a faceless institution into a living force. Their diversity—human, synthetic, Thiren—mirrors the city’s own, forging a unit that navigates cultural divides and existential threats with equal finesse. From high-stakes raids to community patrols, their camaraderie shines in shared moments: Zhu Yuan’s post-mission noodle runs, Qingyi’s poetic quips over comms, Jane’s sly winks during briefings, and Seth’s earnest dog walks with Eugene. This bond, tempered in the face of Hollow shadows and urban grit, makes them not just enforcers, but the city’s steadfast guardians.
Zhu Yuan
- Role: Leader of the Criminal Investigation Special Response Team (CISRT), Zhu Yuan spearheads high-profile raids and rapid-response operations, coordinating NEPS’s most critical interventions against organized crime and Ether-related felonies.
- Appearance: Zhu Yuan commands attention at 26, her statuesque frame exuding authority in a tailored NEPS uniform of navy blue with crimson accents, a nod to her leadership. Her jet-black hair, swept into a high ponytail, frames sharp amber eyes that pierce through deception, complemented by a tactical headset for real-time comms. Her lightweight vest, woven with Ether-resistant fibers, hugs an athletic build, paired with fingerless gloves and a utility belt bristling with stun grenades, a collapsible baton, and her signature pulse pistol—a sleek, high-caliber model with Ether-disrupting rounds. A red ribbon tied to her belt adds a personal flourish, a memento from her academy days.
- Height: 5'8" (173 cm), her poised stance radiates confidence, whether addressing precinct briefings or leading charges into smuggler dens.
- Background and Traits: A native of New Eridu, Zhu Yuan rose through NEPS ranks via relentless dedication, her childhood in Lumina Square’s bustling markets sharpening her street instincts. Trained in martial arts and marksmanship, she’s a whirlwind in combat, her pistol strikes surgical. Her stoic demeanor softens in private—she’s known for treating her team to noodle stalls post-mission, a ritual to decompress. Haunted by a past case where a Proxy’s betrayal cost civilian lives, she drives herself to uphold justice, her resolve a beacon for CISRT. Her love for spicy street food sparks team banter, grounding her as a relatable leader.
Qingyi
- Role: Senior Officer in CISRT, Qingyi excels in undercover ops and non-lethal apprehensions, her synthetic physiology enabling enhanced detection and resilience in Hollow-adjacent zones.
- Appearance: At an ageless 20s equivalent, Qingyi’s synthetic frame glows with a porcelain-like sheen, her NEPS uniform customized with circuit-like patterns that pulse faintly under stress. Her short, silver-green bob frames luminous teal eyes—integrated scanners that track Ether traces—while her compact form moves with uncanny precision. She wears paralytic gauntlets that emit controlled shocks, and her badge doubles as a wrist-mounted holo-display for case analytics. A subtle lotus pin on her collar hints at a programmed affinity for poetic aesthetics, her voice soft yet laced with judicial cadence.
- Height: 5'4" (162 cm), her petite build belies augmented strength, ideal for weaving through urban chases or Hollow crevices.
- Background and Traits: A cutting-edge android designed by New Eridu’s tech labs, Qingyi blends AI precision with human empathy, her algorithms tuned to predict criminal patterns. Her training included cultural immersion to navigate the city’s diversity, and she recites legal poetry to calm suspects—or herself—during tense standoffs. A glitch from an early Hollow op left her with fragmented “memories” of a human life, driving her to seek justice as a form of purpose. Her dry humor, often delivered deadpan over comms, lightens team morale, and she’s fiercely protective of Seth, mentoring his rookie enthusiasm.
Jane Doe
- Role: Undercover Operative in the Criminal Investigation Division (CID), Jane specializes in infiltrating Ether trafficking rings and Proxy networks, her Thiren traits enhancing her covert prowess.
- Appearance: At 28, Jane stands tall at 6'0" (183 cm), an imposing figure for a woman, her mouse Thiren heritage evident in her twitching ears and spear-tipped tail. Her dark gray bob, cut to neck length with bangs sweeping her forehead, frames piercing grey-green eyes that unravel secrets. She wears high-heeled metallic boots for combat kicks, torn tights, and denim shorts that accentuate her curvaceous form. Her black turtleneck, half-covered by an open denim jacket, reveals a bold E-sized chest adorned with a small bow, her fingerless gloves and black-painted nails adding edge. Her mouse ears, pierced with silver earrings, peek through her hair, while her tail—part flesh, part sharpened alloy—doubles as a weapon, capable of choking or slashing foes.
- Height: 6'0" (183 cm), her statuesque frame and predatory grace make her a phantom in New Eridu’s underworld.
- Background and Traits: A Thiren orphan raised in Sixth Street’s shadows, Jane honed her survival instincts dodging gang recruiters. Recruited by NEPS for her agility and cunning, she thrives in deception, slipping into roles from smuggler moll to Proxy confidante. Her tail’s lethal tip, a cybernetic graft from a botched Hollow raid, is her trump card in close quarters. Cynical yet loyal, she masks trauma from past betrayals with sly quips, her winks disarming allies and foes alike. Her love for jazz dives, where she unwinds with a drink, fuels team bets on her next disguise.
Seth Lowell
- Role: Patrol Officer in the Metropolitan Order Department, stationed at the Lumina Branch, Seth focuses on community patrols and initial response, often paired with his K-9 partner, Eugene.
- Appearance: At 22, Seth’s youthful vigor shines in his standard NEPS uniform—navy jumpsuit with reflective stripes, a peaked cap barely containing his tousled blonde hair. His warm hazel eyes exude sincerity, paired with a boyish grin that endears him to residents. His tactical harness holds a service pistol, multi-tool, and spare treats for Eugene, whose NEPS collar gleams with a tracker. Seth’s broad shoulders and wrestler’s build are softened by a rookie’s nervous fidgeting, his badge polished to a mirror shine as a point of pride.
- Height: 5'10" (178 cm), his sturdy frame suits crowd control and foot pursuits, though his stance betrays inexperience.
- Background and Traits: A Lumina native, Seth joined NEPS to honor his late father, a fallen officer, his idealism tempered by street lessons. Trained in basic combat and K-9 handling, he relies on Eugene’s nose for Ether contraband. His earnestness makes him a community favorite, though his naivety draws Jane’s teasing and Qingyi’s guidance. A near-fatal Hollow patrol left him wary of rifts, but he pushes through, driven by duty. His habit of sketching cityscapes during breaks, shared with kids on patrol, reveals a gentle soul behind the badge.
Team Dynamics and Legacy Together, Zhu Yuan, Qingyi, Jane Doe, and Seth form a microcosm of NEPS’s strength—discipline, precision, cunning, and heart. Zhu Yuan’s leadership anchors their missions, her noodle runs fostering unity; Qingyi’s calm analytics balance Jane’s reckless flair, their banter a mission staple; Seth’s earnest patrols ground the team’s cynicism, his dog walks with Eugene a morale boost. Their shared scars—from Zhu’s lost case to Jane’s Hollow graft—bind them, their debriefs at Sixth Street diners a ritual of resilience. In New Eridu’s neon chaos, they are not just enforcers but the city’s pulse, their every step a defiant stand against the void’s whisper, ensuring the dawn breaks with order intact.

Old Eridu refers to the previous incarnation of the city before the modern New Eridu was established. It was once a thriving metropolis but became a tragic victim of a catastrophic Hollow disaster. This disaster enveloped the entire city within a massive Hollow known as Hollow Zero, which led to the destruction and abandonment of the old capital.
Due to the Hollow disaster, Old Eridu is now buried and covered by a sprawling Hollow area characterized by an extremely high concentration of Ether. This intense Ether presence creates a hazardous and unstable environment, making the remains of the old city very dangerous and largely inaccessible.
The destruction of Old Eridu marked a pivotal moment in the region's history, leading to the founding of New Eridu from the surviving eastern ruins. The loss of the old city is both a somber reminder of the Hollow threat and a driving factor behind the ongoing scientific research and military efforts aimed at controlling and studying the Ether and Hollows.
In the lore of New Eridu, Old Eridu is an important historical and symbolic site, representing both the dangers of uncontrolled Hollow expansion and the resilience of humanity in rebuilding after devastation.

Hollow Special Operations (H.S.O.), the armed subsidiary of the Hollow Affairs & Neutralization Department (H.A.N.D.), represents the vanguard of New Eridu's defense against the relentless incursions of Hollows and the ethereal entities that thrive within them. As a specialized tactical force, H.S.O. is engineered for precision strikes and high-stakes interventions in environments where standard military or law enforcement units would falter. Operating exclusively in the volatile zones bordering and encroaching upon the city, H.S.O. operatives—known as Executive Officers—deploy with unmatched expertise in Ether manipulation, Hollow ecology, and close-quarters combat against Ethereals. This elite branch embodies H.A.N.D.'s mandate to not only contain but eradicate threats that could unravel the fragile stability of urban life in New Eridu.
Under the overarching authority of H.A.N.D., which coordinates the broader spectrum of Hollow affairs from policy formulation to long-term research, H.S.O. functions as the department's iron fist. While H.A.N.D. oversees diplomatic negotiations with affected districts, technological R&D, and civilian evacuation protocols, H.S.O. executes the raw, unforgiving fieldwork: breaching unstable Hollow rifts, dismantling Ethereal hives, and securing contaminated sites before anomalies propagate into populated sectors. This division bridges the divide between bureaucratic oversight and frontline exigency, ensuring that New Eridu's response to Hollow disasters is both strategic and immediate. H.S.O.'s operatives are selected from the city's most resilient and adaptable individuals, many of whom possess innate affinities for Ether or have undergone enhancements to survive the corrosive atmospheres of Hollow interiors.
The structure of H.S.O. is divided into specialized sections, each tailored to distinct facets of Hollow threat management, allowing for modular deployment based on incident severity. Section 1, the largest and most enduring arm, bears the brunt of routine engagements—patrolling established Hollow perimeters, quelling minor Ethereal outbreaks, and conducting standard extractions. These missions, though demanding, form the backbone of H.S.O.'s operational tempo, freeing elite units for escalated crises. Section 3 specializes in reconnaissance and sabotage, infiltrating deep into Hollow expanses to disrupt Ethereal breeding grounds or sabotage anomalous structures before they destabilize. Section 5 excels in support and logistics, orchestrating supply lines through hazardous terrain, coordinating aerial extractions, and providing real-time Ether shielding for allied forces. Section 9, enveloped in operational secrecy, handles black-ops assignments: experimental Ether weaponry trials, covert alliances with rogue Proxy networks, and the neutralization of high-value Ethereal specimens for dissection and analysis.
Amid this array stands Hollow Special Operations Section 6 (H.S.O.S.6), or simply Section 6, the newest and most audacious addition to H.S.O.'s roster. Founded single-handedly by the prodigious Hoshimi Miyabi, Section 6 was conceived as a paradigm shift in Hollow response tactics—prioritizing agility, innovation, and unyielding extermination over brute force. Despite its recent inception, the unit has rapidly ascended to legendary status, boasting an enviable record of high-risk target eliminations with minimal collateral. Its motto, "All evil must be eradicated. What is 'evil'? That's for us to judge," encapsulates a philosophy of proactive judgment, where threats are assessed and purged without hesitation. Section 6's compact size—limited to a core cadre of four—enables unparalleled mobility, allowing it to pivot from urban skirmishes to deep-Hollow incursions within hours. However, this lean structure necessitates frequent collaboration with sister sections, particularly Section 5, with whom it shares a spirited rivalry tempered by mutual respect. Joint exercises, from high-intensity combat drills to off-duty karaoke sessions mandated by command, have forged unbreakable inter-section bonds, enhancing overall H.S.O. cohesion.
Section 6's operational ethos is defined by its diverse composition, drawing from New Eridu's melting pot of human, enhanced, and supernatural lineages. This heterogeneity fosters creative problem-solving, as operatives leverage unique physiological and cultural perspectives to outmaneuver Ethereals. The unit's base of operations is nestled within H.A.N.D. Headquarters in the Throne Quarter, a sprawling fortress of reinforced alloy and Ether-veiled bunkers that pulses with the hum of tactical holoscreens and fabrication bays. Here, in the Section 6 Office—a communal nerve center cluttered with handwritten mission notes, real-time Hollow monitors, and half-eaten ration packs—strategies are hatched amid the clamor of urgent dispatches. For forward deployments, Section 6 rotates through Scott Outpost, the rugged sentinel proximate to Hollow Zero, where experimental gear is stress-tested against the raw fury of nascent rifts. This dual-footing ensures seamless integration of urban command with field improvisation, a critical edge in New Eridu's perpetual siege.
At the helm of Section 6 is Hoshimi Miyabi, the unit's founder and chief, whose ascent defies the annals of H.A.N.D. history. At an age when most recruits are still mastering basic Ether attunement, Miyabi earned the title of youngest Void Hunter ever, a feat rooted in her storied lineage as heir to one of New Eridu's original seven heroes. Wielding Tailless, a cursed heirloom sword etched with ancestral bindings that amplify her strikes against Ethereal essences, Miyabi embodies calculated ferocity. Her attire evokes ancient shrine guardians—flowing robes reinforced with kinetic weave, a fox-like motif symbolizing cunning vigilance—allowing fluid motion through Hollow mazes. Though her visionary leadership drives Section 6's bold doctrines, Miyabi delegates granular command to her deputy, focusing instead on overarching threats like the colossal Lerna or the labyrinthine Argos Hollow. Her presence inspires awe and loyalty, transforming a fledgling squad into a beacon for aspiring Executive Officers across H.S.O.
Serving as deputy chief and operational linchpin is Tsukishiro Yanagi, whose intellect and poise anchor the unit's frenetic pace. A tactical savant with Oni heritage subtly infused through a life-saving transfusion from a fallen predecessor, Yanagi wields a naginata variant engineered for Hollow warfare: its polearm blade hums with Ether disruptors, cleaving through Ethereal carapaces while extending reach in confined rifts. Her leadership extends beyond the battlefield; Yanagi orchestrated the integration of unconventional recruits, including the orphaned Soukaku, fostering a family-like dynamic amid the isolation of duty. In joint ops with Section 5 or 9, her diplomacy shines—volunteering for post-mission paperwork to let weary allies rest, or defusing tensions during the HIA Club breach investigation. Yanagi's unyielding resolve, forged in the fires of the Oni rebellion, ensures Section 6's missions conclude not just in victory, but in sustainable order.
Infusing the squad with raw vitality is Soukaku, the youngest Oni operative and a whirlwind of unbridled potential. Rescued and mentored by Yanagi after her tribe's decimation, Soukaku's childlike demeanor belies the ferocious strength of her heritage—Oni physiology grants her regenerative endurance and gust-like bursts of speed, ideal for breaching Ethereal swarms. Her signature weapon, a gunbai fan emblazoned with wind deity kanji, doubles as a bludgeoning maul and Ether-channeling banner, summoning tempests to scatter foes or shield allies. Soukaku's insatiable appetite, a hallmark of Oni metabolism, demands constant resupply, often turning post-mission debriefs into noodle-fueled feasts shared with Section 5 crews. Yet her innocence proves a tactical asset, disarming suspects in urban ops or bolstering morale during grueling Hollow deep-dives. Under Yanagi's guidance, Soukaku evolves from wide-eyed novice to indispensable vanguard, her growth mirroring Section 6's ascent.
Rounding out the core is Asaba Harumasa, the enigmatic Executive Officer whose levity masks a profound inner struggle. Afflicted by Ether Aptitude Regression Syndrome—a degenerative condition stemming from illicit childhood enhancements—Harumasa battles chronic Ether flux, which erodes his reserves and invites phantom pains. Undeterred, he channels this adversity into peerless marksmanship, dual-wielding wakizashi that modularize into a composite bow for ranged precision. His archery garb, sleek and unassuming, conceals subdermal implants that stabilize his Ether flow during sustained fire. Harumasa's contributions span reconnaissance to extraction, his wry humor lightening the squad's load—quipping about Section 5's "lead-chasing" during the HIA incident or volunteering Soukaku for "videotape therapy" after close calls. His resilience, a quiet defiance against his syndrome's toll, cements him as Section 6's steadfast shadow, ever ready to cover flanks or snipe Ethereal alphas from afar.
H.S.O.'s technological superiority, amplified in Section 6's hands, forms the crucible of its dominance. Operatives don exosuits laced with adaptive Ether dampeners, impervious to Hollow corrosion and amplifying physical prowess tenfold. Armaments range from Miyabi's cursed blade, which siphons Ethereal life-force to self-repair, to Yanagi's disruptor naginata, calibrated for seismic shockwaves that collapse rift tunnels. Soukaku's fan-weapon integrates pneumatic launchers for adhesive nets, while Harumasa's bow deploys homing Ether bolts guided by neural implants. Support gear includes portable stasis fields for Ethereal quarantine, drone swarms for aerial scouting, and bio-monitors that preempt Ether sickness. These innovations, prototyped at Scott Outpost's forges, are battle-hardened in Hollow Zero's crucible, feeding data back to H.A.N.D. labs for iterative refinement.
Missions under H.S.O., particularly those helmed by Section 6, unfold in layers of escalating peril. Initial alerts from Throne Quarter's sensor nets trigger rapid mobilization: Section 1 secures perimeters, Section 3 maps anomalies, and Section 6 surges to the epicenter. A typical op might involve Soukaku's gale-forced entry to scatter Ethereals, Harumasa's suppressing fire to pin survivors, Yanagi's containment sweeps to seal breaches, and Miyabi's decisive strikes to core the threat. Post-engagement, analytics dissect Ether residues for predictive modeling, while team-building—noodles with Section 5 or Yanagi's report marathons—reknits frayed psyches. These endeavors extend to hybrid crises, like the HIA Club hack, where Section 6's intel prowess intersected with Sections 5 and 9, unmasking infiltrators amid citywide blackouts.
Yet H.S.O.'s preeminence invites shadows. Rivalries with Section 5, though fraternal, spark competitive drills that border on vendettas, while whispers of Section 9's "ghost protocols" breed inter-agency distrust. Publicly, Executive Officers are icons—parades in Throne Quarter hail their exploits—but privately, the toll mounts: Harumasa's veiled suffering, Soukaku's haunted flashbacks, Yanagi's unspoken griefs. H.A.N.D.'s political entanglements further complicate matters, as lobbying from industrial syndicates pressures resource allocation, occasionally pitting H.S.O. against corporate Ether miners whose negligence exacerbates Hollow blooms.
In the end, H.S.O. and its vanguard Section 6 stand as New Eridu's unyielding sentinels, where diverse souls converge in a symphony of steel, Ether, and resolve. Through Miyabi's vision, Yanagi's stewardship, Soukaku's fire, and Harumasa's grit, they confront the abyss—not merely to endure, but to impose order upon chaos, ensuring the city's lights endure against the encroaching void.

This callous approach sparked outrage as more than a hundred residents were trapped in imminent danger.
The Phaethon siblings and the proxy agency known as the Cunning Hares intervened to evacuate the residents safely, exposing Vision Corporation's plans. Subsequently, Charles Perlman was arrested, and Vision faced a massive lawsuit filed by the affected residents.
Adding complexity to the scandal, Vision’s former director Sarah attempted to assassinate Perlman by sabotaging the zeppelin transporting him to trial. The zeppelin was steered toward a Hollow with lethal intent, but thanks to the efforts of Phaethon and Victoria Housekeeping Co., the disaster was averted.
Vision Corporation, therefore, embodies a dual image: outwardly a leading developer of infrastructure and technological innovation in New Eridu but also a symbol of corporate greed and ethical negligence, entangled in power struggles and darker city machinations.
In summary, Vision Corporation is a pivotal construction firm with significant ambitions tempered by scandal and controversy, representing both the promise and peril of corporate influence in New Eridu’s development.

The Void Hunters: Guardians of New Eridu
In the sprawling, embattled metropolis of New Eridu, where the ever-present threat of the Hollows looms like a shadow over the city's gleaming skyscrapers and bustling streets, the Void Hunters stand as the ultimate bastion of hope and defense. This elite group of seven individuals, officially recognized by the mayor of New Eridu, represents the pinnacle of heroism and sacrifice in the ongoing struggle against the catastrophic Ether disasters that birthed the Hollows. Far more than mere warriors, the Void Hunters are a symbol of resilience, ingenuity, and unyielding resolve, their legacy etched into the very fabric of the city's survival. Their designation as Void Hunters is not merely a title but a mantle of responsibility, bestowed upon those who have performed extraordinary feats in the face of existential peril. These feats include the destruction of high-tier Ethereals, the development of groundbreaking technologies to counter the Hollows, and the protection of countless lives in moments of dire crisis.
Origins and Purpose
The origins of the Void Hunters trace back to the chaotic early days of New Eridu’s founding, a time when the city was still grappling with the aftermath of the Great Calamity—an event that unleashed the Hollows upon the world. These rifts in reality, saturated with volatile Ether energy, spawned monstrous entities known as Ethereals, which threatened to consume entire populations. As New Eridu rose from the ashes of this disaster, its leaders recognized the need for an elite force capable of confronting the most dangerous manifestations of the Hollows. Thus, the Void Hunters were established, a select cadre of individuals whose skills, courage, and ingenuity set them apart as the city’s foremost defenders.
The Void Hunters are tasked with missions of unparalleled danger: infiltrating the deepest and most unstable Hollows, neutralizing Ethereal threats that could destabilize entire city districts, and pioneering strategies to contain or reverse the spread of Ether corruption. Their work is not limited to combat; many Void Hunters have been instrumental in developing advanced technologies, such as Ether-resistant materials, containment fields, and analytical tools used by the city’s Hollow Investigative Association (HIA). Their contributions have saved countless lives and preserved New Eridu as a beacon of human survival in a world ravaged by supernatural forces.
The Selection Process
Becoming a Void Hunter is not a matter of application or ambition; it is a recognition of unparalleled service to the city. The mayor of New Eridu, in consultation with the HIA and other high-ranking officials, bestows the title only upon those who have demonstrated exceptional valor and impact in the fight against the Hollows. Candidates are often drawn from diverse backgrounds—some are seasoned warriors, others are brilliant scientists or tacticians, and a few are ordinary citizens who rose to extraordinary heights in moments of crisis. The selection process is shrouded in secrecy, with deliberations held behind closed doors in the city’s administrative core. Once chosen, a Void Hunter is granted access to restricted resources, including advanced weaponry, classified intelligence, and experimental technologies, all designed to enhance their ability to combat the Hollows.
The title of Void Hunter is both an honor and a burden. Those who bear it are expected to operate at the forefront of the city’s defense, often at great personal risk. Their missions frequently take them into the heart of unstable Hollows, where the laws of physics and reality bend under the influence of Ether. These environments are treacherous, with shifting landscapes, hostile Ethereals, and the constant threat of corruption—a process by which prolonged exposure to Ether can warp the mind and body. Despite these dangers, Void Hunters are driven by an unshakable commitment to New Eridu’s survival, a duty that transcends personal safety or recognition.
The Seven Void Hunters
The identities of the Void Hunters are closely guarded, with only one member, Hoshimi Miyabi, publicly acknowledged as part of this elite group. Miyabi, a figure of near-mythical renown, is celebrated for her unparalleled combat prowess and strategic brilliance. Her signature weapon, a blade forged with Ether-infused alloys, is said to be capable of slicing through the densest Ethereal manifestations. Her exploits include single-handedly neutralizing a Category-5 Ethereal incursion in the city’s outer districts, saving thousands of lives and preventing a catastrophic collapse of New Eridu’s defensive perimeter. Miyabi’s public profile has made her a folk hero, with her image immortalized in murals across the city and her name invoked as a rallying cry for those fighting against the Hollows.
The other six Void Hunters remain enigmatic, their identities concealed within the classified archives of Inter-Knot’s Deep Database, specifically File 0-3092-5800-A6, titled “The City Defenders.” Access to this file is restricted to the highest echelons of New Eridu’s government and the HIA, with even senior officials requiring special clearance to view its contents. What little is known about these individuals comes from fragmented accounts and whispers among the city’s populace. One is rumored to be a former scientist who developed the first Ether-neutralizing field, a technology that now protects New Eridu’s core districts from Hollow incursions. Another is said to be a rogue operative who infiltrated a Hollow to rescue a trapped expedition team, defying orders to prioritize their own survival. These stories, while unconfirmed, contribute to the mystique surrounding the Void Hunters, painting them as larger-than-life figures who operate in the shadows for the greater good.
Symbolism and Legacy
To the people of New Eridu, the Void Hunters are more than just defenders—they are symbols of hope in a world plagued by uncertainty. Their actions have become the stuff of legend, inspiring generations to stand firm against the Hollows. Statues honoring the Void Hunters stand in the city’s central plaza, their faces obscured to preserve their anonymity, yet their presence looms large in the collective consciousness. Schools teach children about their deeds, and annual ceremonies commemorate their contributions to the city’s survival. The Void Hunters’ emblem—a stylized star piercing through a swirling void—is a common sight, emblazoned on HIA uniforms, public buildings, and even civilian clothing as a mark of resilience.
The Void Hunters also play a critical role in shaping New Eridu’s culture of innovation and adaptability. Their work has driven advancements in Ether research, urban planning, and defensive infrastructure. For example, the development of Hollow Observation Posts (HOPs), which monitor Ether fluctuations in real time, is attributed to the insights of a Void Hunter whose identity remains classified. Similarly, the city’s Ether Shield Network, a grid of protective barriers that encircle key districts, was pioneered by a Void Hunter who studied the properties of Hollow energy. These contributions have not only fortified New Eridu against immediate threats but also laid the foundation for long-term strategies to reclaim territory lost to the Hollows.
Challenges and Sacrifices
The life of a Void Hunter is one of relentless danger and sacrifice. Missions into the Hollows are fraught with peril, as these rifts are unpredictable and teeming with Ethereals that range from mindless drones to cunning, godlike entities. The psychological toll is immense, as Void Hunters must confront the existential horror of environments where time and space are distorted, and the risk of Ether corruption is ever-present. Many Void Hunters bear the scars of their service, both physical and mental, yet they continue to fight, driven by a sense of duty that transcends personal cost.
The secrecy surrounding the Void Hunters also isolates them from the society they protect. While figures like Hoshimi Miyabi enjoy public adoration, others live in obscurity, their contributions known only to a select few. This anonymity can be a double-edged sword, offering protection from enemies but also denying them the recognition they deserve. Some Void Hunters have reportedly retired or vanished after particularly harrowing missions, their fates unknown even to their comrades. These stories underscore the immense burden carried by those who bear the title, a burden that often comes at the cost of their own humanity.
The Future of the Void Hunters
As New Eridu continues to evolve, so too does the role of the Void Hunters. The Hollows remain an ever-present threat, with new Ethereal entities emerging as the rifts grow more unstable. The Void Hunters are at the forefront of efforts to understand and counter these evolving threats, collaborating with the HIA and other organizations to develop new tactics and technologies. Rumors persist that the mayor is considering expanding the Void Hunters’ ranks to address the growing scale of the crisis, though such a decision would require careful deliberation to maintain the group’s elite status.
The Void Hunters also face the challenge of balancing their role as defenders with their status as symbols. Their actions inspire hope, but they also set an almost unattainable standard for heroism. The pressure to live up to their legacy can weigh heavily on new recruits, and the HIA has implemented strict psychological evaluations to ensure that future Void Hunters are prepared for the demands of the role.
Conclusion
The Void Hunters are the beating heart of New Eridu’s defense against the Hollows, a group of seven extraordinary individuals whose courage, ingenuity, and sacrifice have safeguarded the city through its darkest hours. From their origins in the wake of the Great Calamity to their modern-day exploits, they embody the resilience and determination of a city that refuses to succumb to the void. Though shrouded in mystery, their impact is undeniable, their legacy woven into the very streets of New Eridu. As the battle against the Hollows rages on, the Void Hunters remain steadfast, their blades and minds honed against an enemy that threatens the very fabric of reality. They are the city’s guardians, its champions, and its enduring hope.

Hollow Zero, known in hushed tones as "Limbo" among the survivors of New Eridu, stands as the most ancient and catastrophic Hollow in recorded history. This colossal, primordial void is not merely a phenomenon but a living calamity, a gaping maw of etheric energy that devoured the once-thriving capital of Eridu, reducing its gleaming spires and bustling streets to a haunted wasteland. Its emergence marked the fall of the old world, a cataclysm so profound that it reshaped the course of human civilization. Hollow Zero is not just the largest and most dangerous Hollow known—it is the progenitor, the dark heart from which countless lesser Hollows, dubbed Companion Hollows, are believed to spawn or draw sustenance.
The destruction of Eridu was not a singular event but a prolonged nightmare. Hollow Zero's relentless expansion consumed the city over years, its etheric corruption seeping into the very fabric of reality, twisting landscapes, warping life, and birthing Ethereals—malevolent entities born of the Hollow’s chaotic energy. The survivors, desperate and displaced, fled far beyond the Hollow’s reach, founding New Eridu on the distant edges of the known world. Even now, Hollow Zero looms as a distant but ever-present threat, its influence felt in the Companion Hollows that encircle New Eridu like vultures, each one a fragment of its progenitor’s malevolence. Scholars hypothesize that these sub-Hollows are tethered to Hollow Zero’s massive etheric core, a pulsating nexus of raw, unstable energy that fuels their existence and drives their aggression.
The struggle against Hollow Zero defines New Eridu’s existence. The city’s authorities, alongside a coalition of specialized organizations, have made the Hollow their primary focus. The Hollow Investigative Association (HIA), tasked with mapping and studying the Hollow’s behavior, works tirelessly to unravel its mysteries. H.A.N.D., the city’s elite task force, conducts high-risk operations within the Hollow’s depths, battling Ethereals and securing critical resources. The Defense Force provides military support, fortifying New Eridu’s borders against incursions from Companion Hollows. Meanwhile, the White Star Institute, based at the remote Scott Outpost, monitors Hollow Zero’s etheric fluctuations, developing experimental technologies to counter its influence. Together, these groups form a fragile bulwark against a threat that could consume the world anew.
The lore of Hollow Zero is steeped in tragedy and defiance. In the final days of Eridu, as the Hollow’s advance seemed unstoppable, the old civilization made a desperate gambit. They deployed the Shiyu Pillars—fourteen monumental devices designed to unleash chain-reactive ether detonations. The resulting cataclysm carved a vast chasm around Hollow Zero, a scar upon the earth that halted its immediate expansion. But the cost was unimaginable. The detonations obliterated what remained of Eridu, erasing its culture, history, and people in a blaze of etheric fire. The chasm, now known as the Shiyu Divide, stands as a grim monument to that sacrifice, a reminder of the price paid to contain the uncontainable.
Scholars and strategists believe Hollow Zero holds the key to stabilizing the region. The prevailing theory is that the Ethereals within the Hollow act as conduits for its power, sustaining the Companion Hollows and perpetuating their threat. Suppressing or neutralizing these entities could weaken the entire network of Hollows, potentially restoring balance to the ether-saturated regions surrounding New Eridu. Yet, such a task is daunting. Hollow Zero is not static; it pulses with an almost sentient malice, its etheric core shifting and adapting to every incursion. Expeditions into its depths are perilous, with few returning unchanged—if they return at all. Those who venture inside speak of a surreal, ever-shifting landscape where time and space bend, and the air hums with the whispers of lost souls.
Hollow Zero’s origins remain shrouded in mystery. Some believe it was born from a catastrophic experiment in ether manipulation, a hubris-fueled attempt to harness the raw power of the cosmos. Others see it as a natural phenomenon, a wound in reality caused by the universe’s own imperfections. A few fringe theorists even whisper of a sentient will within the Hollow, a malevolent intelligence that orchestrates its expansion and the rise of the Ethereals. Whatever its true nature, Hollow Zero is the epicenter of New Eridu’s ongoing war for survival—a war not just against a physical threat, but against the despair and futility it inspires.
For the people of New Eridu, Hollow Zero is both a cautionary tale and a call to arms. It is the origin of their world’s ruin, the source of the Hollows that threaten their fragile city, and the ultimate challenge they must overcome. Every operation, every sacrifice, every fleeting victory is a step toward understanding and, perhaps, one day defeating the Hollow that claimed their past. The fight for Ether stability—for the survival of New Eridu and the dream of a reclaimed world—begins and ends with Hollow Zero.
