Border Crossing 89' : Cold War

In 1989, hostilities along the German border reached a fever pitch when a Bundesgrenzschutz trooper from the Federal Republic of Germany fired upon a Grenztruppen trooper from the German Democratic Republic. The event came after there had been a slight displacement of the border markers, during which both sides were in the midst of a heated dispute over where the marker should be. In the heat of excitement, a Grenztruppen soldier, unknowingly, stepped over the border and was killed by the Bundesgrenzschutz soldier who acted out of panic. This incident led to fierce international exchanges between the Soviets, the United States, West Germany, and East Germany, with further reactions from the Czechs. A whole war was sparked due to the misplaced marker and an impulsive action by two people. This event triggered a chain of happenings that found its conclusion in a formal war declaration by Erich Honecker against the West Germans and Americans, hence compelling the Czechs and the Soviets to quickly side with their ally.

Soon after the war was proclaimed, 50,000 troops were sent by the Americans to West Germany, and fighting broke out along the border of West and East Germany, with both the Russian and American forces afraid to use their nuclear weapons.

West Germans started to move forward, pushing step by step toward the center of East Germany. As a countermeasure, the East Germans built trenches and assumed a defensive stance, developing a trench system and bunkers covered by Soviet-made SAM missiles.

With the aid of Americans, the West Germans bombed the bunkers, although they lost a few of their aircraft to the SAM missiles. The Soviets retaliated by bombarding the positions of the West Germans with their own sorties, while troops on the ground fought minor battles, without either side losing ground.

In 1990, after weeks of fierce fighting, the Soviets, West Germans, and Czechs were able to cross the defenses of West Germany and rapidly advance toward Hamburg. The Americans and West Germans were caught off guard and soon found themselves fighting intense house-to-house battles, while the Americans and Soviets shelled Hamburg into rubble.

On the ground, troops engaged in house-to-house fighting, fighting from building to building. Both forces incurred heavy losses for the purpose of securing a mere mile of ground, with many troops giving their lives for the attainment of only two miles. It was similar to the vicious conditions of the 'Battle of Stalingrad.'

By the end of five months of continuous combat, the Americans and West Germans had regained a large part of Hamburg, but the Soviets retained control of some areas. The Americans took drastic losses, losing half of the troops sent to West Germany, amounting to 12,000 soldiers killed and a large number wounded. West Germany also suffered 25,000 casualties, and the worst hit were the Soviets, losing 55,000 soldiers along with many wounds. The East Germans lost 23,000 men and the Czechs 10,000.
