- #1Originselective
Keys: Origin
Fae hail from three different Origins. Firstborn fae are creatures from the Mists. They are either children of other firstborn, or the result of minor fae spirits gaining enough power and control over their magic to take an active role in the human world. Inanimae are fae spirits of nature, appearing spontaneously from the intersection of the Mists and the natural world. Finally, changelings are fae and human hybrids. Some are children of humans and firstborn, but most are firstborn children swapped for human infants. Both the fae child and the abducted human baby will grow up to be a changeling.
- #2Firstbornselective
Keys: Firstborn
The Firstborn are creatures of the primordial Mists that sprang fully formed into being. The firstborn claim that they ruled and even created the entire world and that they alone had the right to dictate the laws and decrees of the magical realms. Due to their intimate connection with the powers of the Dominions, firstborn fae have a much easier time Unleashing.
- #3Changelingselective
Keys: Changeling
Changelings are fae and human hybrids. Some are children of humans and firstborn, but most are firstborn children swapped for human infants. Both the fae child and the abducted human baby will grow up to be a changeling.
- #4Inanimaeselective
Keys: Inanimae
Inanimae are fae spirits of nature, appearing spontaneously from the intersection of the Mists and the natural world.
- #5Cantripselective
Keys: Cantrip
Cantrips are the complex ways of faerie magic that are used by Changelings. While Cantrips are not a new invention, they have become the only alternative since the Shattering, as the high levels of Banality make Unleashing impossible without being Undone.
- #6Dominionselective
Keys: Dominion
Dominions are four spheres of magic allowing control over a particular set of associations. Dominion, simply put, is a set of concepts related to a certain diurnal time period that sets boundaries on what fae magic can or cannot do. Depending on which Dominion the fae uses, they can cast focused magical spells, called cantrips, to perform all kinds of interesting feats or unleash their inherent magical power and trust on their luck. The four Dominions are Day, Night, Dawn and Dusk, and each is associated with a Court, respectively Summer, Winter, Spring and Autumn.
- #7Courtselective
Keys: Court
Fae are organized into a system of seasonal Courts that wages war against each other for thousands of years, until the Oath-Truce stopped the War of Seasons in order to observe humanity. The Four Courts are: The Spring Court, which embraces change; The Summer Court, which determines to uphold tradition; The Autumn Court, which are fascinated by humanity; The Winter Court, which are the most brutal and vicious court; Fae without a Court are called Solstice.
- #8Sainingselective
Keys: Saining
In order to join a Court, a Fae has to undergo the Saining ritual. This ritual remains the same in all four Courts. The first step of that ritual is called the Cleansing. The next step is called the Naming.
- #9Cleansingselective
Keys: Cleansing
First, the respective Fae is closely examined. Those who hold the right of decision weigh many factors when considering supplicants. Even trivial considerations such as bearing and attitude might be judged by some Saining ritemasters, although the significant insight of the Cleansing is into the truths that lie within a Fae’s heart and soul. During the process, all crimes and social errors are cleansed from the Fae, so that she can begin a new life within her court.
- #10Namingselective
Keys: Naming
The ritemaster reports to the Court lords the dedication and the skill of the aspirant during the previous seasons before the ritual starts. The Naming ritual itself is deeply personal to the two Fae involved, and the details are very rarely shared with others. Some are relatively simple and straightforward, such as swearing oaths to the Court in question and reciting one’s lineage and details of bloodline, or a meditation upon the Fae’s place in the world. Others might involve the ritual sacrifice of a human and the divination of the future from the entrails. The Naming lasts for but a short time, but the ritual itself unlocks the deep magical potential within a Fae’s soul, and the aspirant becomes one with the powers of the Court. Sometimes, a simple touch or magical word Sains the Fae into the Court, although the rite certainly does not end there. The Naming is complete, when the ritemaster marks the aspirant with a sigil from his own blood.
- #11Mienselective
Keys: Mien
Fae Mien is the true appearance of a fae. This is the fae's true self and how he or she appears to other fae.
- #12Mistsselective
Keys: Mists
According to the Firstborn, the Mists of Creation are the raw stuff of existence, from which all things, be they spiritual or mundane, came. The fae believe that they were the first self-aware creatures to be able to shape and control the power of the Mists.
- #13Oath-Truceselective
Keys: Oath-Truce
The Oath-Truce is an agreement between the Four Courts to suspend hostility for one hundred years. This agreement began in 1130 AD and therefore will fall sometime in 1230 AD. The Oathtruce was to last for one hundred years, and the following terms were agreed upon: No Court shall raise an army against another. No fae shall kill another in the name of Court. Only in honorable duels shall fae slay fae. A fae who violates the Oath-Truce may be killed with impunity. In one human century, the Oath-Truce shall end.
- #14Oathcircleselective
Keys: Oathcircle
Oathcircle is the term of a group of Fae that work together.
- #15Spring Courtselective
Keys: Spring Court
The Spring Court is one of the seasonal Fae Courts. The Spring Court is defined by its embrace of change and its focus on the relationship between the fae and humanity. They are the most adaptable of the Courts, seeing the transformation of the world not as a threat, but as an opportunity to forge a new, co-dependent relationship with mortals.
- #16Summer Courtselective
Keys: Summer Court
The Summer Court, also known as the Summerfae, is one of the seasonal Fae Courts. The Summer Court is the bastion of tradition, law, and structure. They are the most alien in their views of humanity, seeing mortals as creatures to be ruled, guided, and punished according to a strict, unchanging code.
- #17Autumn Courtselective
Keys: Autumn Court
The Autumn Court is one of the seasonal Fae Courts. The Autumn Court is fascinated with humanity, but in a manipulative, secretive way. They prefer to work from the shadows, studying mortals and using them as pawns in their schemes.
- #18Winter Courtselective
Keys: Winter Court
The Winter Court, also known as the Winter-kin, is one of the seasonal Fae Courts. They are the most brutal and vicious and engaged with the other Courts in the millennia-long War of Seasons. The Winter Court understands very little about humanity, and cares about them even less. In the darkest forests in the dead of night, these are creatures that eat lost children and bathe their caps in the blood that remains. These are the creatures that chase anyone in their domains, running mortals to terrified exhaustion. These creatures are the reasons that humanity fears the hours after sunset. The Winter fae have a hatred of the other Courts that goes beyond the (mostly) rational dislike and disagreements about the Summer, Spring, and Autumn factions.
- #19Solstice, Disgracedselective
Keys: Disgraced, Solstice
The Solstice, also known as Disgraced Fae, are Fae who were never given the chance to Sain into a Court; refused that chance; were exiled from their Courts; or whose ritemaster's botched their Naming ceremories. Solstice fae are outcasts and considered scum, but they find work as couriers and mercenaries,
- #20Unleashingselective
Keys: Unleashing
Unleashing is a dangerous, but powerful, method of performing magic, based on an Art.
- #21Oathselective
Keys: Oath
An Oath is a magically binding contract between one or more fae and one or more humans. It is a sacred vow, enforced by the very magic of the Mists, that serves two primary purposes: To regulate interactions between fae and mortals (e.g., a fae will protect a village in exchange for a bowl of cream left out each night). To shield the fae from Echoes – an active Oath provides a defense against the harmful effects of human belief.
- #22Iron Oathselective
Keys: Iron Oath
Sworn between a single fae and a single human (or small group). Lasts one lifetime. Most common.
- #23Stone Oathselective
Keys: Stone Oath
Sworn between a fae and a family or small community. Rarer, more powerful. Often involve future generations.
- #24Gold Oathselective
Keys: Gold Oath
Sworn between a Court and an entire nation or culture. Extremely rare; the knowledge to forge new Gold Oaths has been lost. Existing Gold Oaths have faded into “customs” or “traditions” that humans still follow without remembering their origin.
- #25Echoselective
Keys: Echo
An Echo is a belief, object, or action of humanity that can physically or magically harm, repel, or weaken a fae. As human faith in the One God (and other organized religions) has grown, Echoes have become more powerful and more common. Every fae has at least one Echo that affects them. An Echo is always triggered by something specific. Examples include: the sight of a cross, the sound of church bells, touching cold iron, being scolded like a child, entering a house without an invitation, hearing a rooster crow, or a virgin’s kiss.
