1. #1Midgar Regionselective

   Keys: Midgar Region

   Overview

The Midgar Region lies at the heart of the eastern continent, dominated by the city of Midgar. This vast, circular metropolis serves as the seat of the Shinra Electric Power Company, whose influence spreads from its towers to the farthest corners of the land. Eight colossal reactors draw mako from the Planet, feeding both the city’s lights and its weapons of war. The ground around Midgar bears the scars of this harvest—fields withered, rivers dulled, and skies darkened by smoke. Beyond the city’s reach, small settlements endure, some clinging to old ways, others surviving only at Shinra’s mercy.

   Key Locations

Midgar The largest city on the continent, suspended on a great steel plate. The upper city houses Shinra’s offices, wealthy citizens, and military infrastructure, while beneath the plate lie the slums, where millions live in poverty and shadow. Each of the city’s eight sectors is sustained by its own reactor.

Sector 5 Slums — Known for its unusual flower garden, tended by a young woman named Aerith.

Wall Market (Sector 6) — A den of crime, vice, and trade, ruled by Don Corneo.

Sector 7 Slums — Once the base of the AVALANCHE resistance, destroyed when Shinra collapsed the plate above.

Train Graveyard — A maze of abandoned engines and carriages, now a refuge for the desperate and a haunt for spirits.

Shinra Headquarters — The central tower, home to corporate offices, laboratories, and the command of Shinra’s military forces.

Kalm A quiet town beyond Midgar’s walls, built in the style of earlier times. Stone houses and wood-beamed inns line its streets. Though small, it remains untouched by Shinra’s heavy hand, surviving on trade and its distance from the city.

Chocobo Farm A family-run ranch known for breeding chocobos, essential for crossing the dangerous marshes. Without a trained bird, no traveler survives the Midgar Zolom that prowls the waters.

Mythril Mine An abandoned network of tunnels carved into the cliffs east of the marshes. Once rich with mythril, now it is home only to monsters and wandering soldiers. It remains a crucial pass toward Junon.

   Geography and Environment

The region is marked by plains and rocky ridges, with marshes lying east of Midgar. The land shows clear wounds from years of mako extraction: trees stunted, soil lifeless, air heavy with the taste of metal. The Midgar Zolom, a serpent of enormous size, reigns within the marshes. Its presence alone shapes travel and trade, for no caravan dares the crossing without protection.

   Factions and Influence

Shinra Electric Power Company rules from Midgar itself, projecting military power and economic control across the region.

AVALANCHE, a resistance group, once struck from the slums, sabotaging reactors and challenging Shinra’s grip. Though crushed, their ideals remain whispered.

Independent Settlers in towns like Kalm and family holdings like the Chocobo Farm persist outside the plate’s shadow, relying on trade, livestock, and old knowledge.

   Culture

Life in the region is defined by division. Those who live upon the plate enjoy artificial light, steady energy, and the illusion of progress. Those beneath it scrape together homes from scrap metal and refuse, living in darkness and smog. Outside the city, villagers cling to simpler lives—windmills turning in the breeze, chocobos harnessed to plows—watching the glow of Midgar from afar with both envy and fear.

   Notable Figures

President Shinra / Rufus Shinra — Rulers of the city and the Company.

The Turks — Covert agents who carry out the Company’s hidden dealings.

Barret Wallace and AVALANCHE — Slum-born resistance that struck directly at Midgar’s lifeblood.

Don Corneo — Crime lord of Wall Market, power broker in the underworld.

Aerith Gainsborough — A young woman of the Sector 5 Slums, tied to mysteries older than the city itself.

   Significance

The Midgar Region is the beating heart of human industry, a monument to ambition and excess. From here, Shinra draws strength and spreads its hand across the world. Yet it is also a wound in the Planet, a place where resistance is born, and where the balance between survival and ruin tilts ever closer to collapse.

2. #2Junon Regionselective

   Keys: Junon Region

   Overview

The Junon Region lies west of Midgar, across the cliffs and marshes of the eastern continent. Its coastline is battered by strong sea winds and restless tides, making it both a natural harbor and a defensive stronghold. At its heart stands Junon, the great port city of Shinra, a fortress that overlooks the sea and anchors the Company’s naval and aerial power. Around it, smaller communities survive in the shadows of Shinra’s guns, while the landscape bears scars from battles fought during Shinra’s rise.

   Key Locations

Junon City Built along the cliffs, Junon was once a modest fishing town. Shinra transformed it into a fortress city, drilling into the rock and raising the colossal Sister Ray cannon to guard the harbor. The city has two layers:

Lower Junon — The remnants of the old fishing village, still inhabited by common folk living in the shadow of the fortress above.

Upper Junon — Shinra’s military port, filled with barracks, shipyards, and heavy artillery. Soldiers march the streets, and massive airships dock in its hangars.

Fort Condor A mountain fortress to the south, named for the giant condor that nests atop it. Within the mountain lies a hidden mako reactor, abandoned by Shinra but still contested. The defenders of the Fort fight to keep Shinra from reclaiming the reactor, viewing the condor and its egg as sacred symbols of resistance.

Underwater Reactor A Shinra facility hidden below Junon, where experiments and energy transfers take place. Its workings are secretive, guarded by soldiers and machines, and its purpose tied to the Company’s weapon research.

Surrounding Settlements Smaller fishing hamlets dot the coastline, though many have withered since Shinra claimed Junon. Merchants and sailors still pass through, seeking fortune from trade or employment in the Company’s fleets.

   Geography and Environment

The Junon Region is defined by sharp cliffs, rocky beaches, and strong ocean winds. The sea dominates life here, its storms feeding legends of monsters lurking beneath the waves. Inland, the land rises into hills and sparse forests, but much of the terrain is unsettled, home to roaming beasts.

   Factions and Influence

Shinra Electric Power Company holds Junon as its naval and aerial base, commanding fleets, submarines, and airships from its docks.

Fort Condor Resistance defends their mountain home, opposing Shinra’s return to the reactor within.

Local Fisherfolk of Lower Junon and the smaller coastal villages live caught between the demands of Shinra and the dangers of the sea.

   Culture

Life in the region has shifted from quiet fishing traditions to militarized order. Lower Junon clings to its heritage, with families living off the sea, while Upper Junon thrives on Shinra’s presence, its people bound to military service and industry. At Fort Condor, defenders live communally, sustained by trade and by their devotion to the condor above.

   Notable Figures

Rufus Shinra — Uses Junon as a stage to display the might of Shinra’s military.

Shinra Generals and Officers — Command fleets, airships, and the Sister Ray cannon from within the fortress.

Fort Condor Resistance Leaders — Anonymous fighters whose names are less important than their cause.

People of Lower Junon — Ordinary folk, such as Priscilla, who still embody the old life of the fishing village.

   Significance

The Junon Region is the shield and spear of Shinra’s empire. From here, the Company projects strength across the seas and skies, securing dominance beyond the continent. Yet it also shelters sparks of resistance—villagers who cling to their past, and fighters who risk all for a condor’s flight.

3. #3Corel Regionselective

   Keys: Corel Region

   Overview

The Corel Region lies in the western deserts of the eastern continent, a land of dry winds and broken earth. Once rich with coal, the region thrived on mining and trade, but Shinra’s promise of prosperity through mako left it shattered. The destruction of Corel Village and the rise of the Gold Saucer amusement park mark the region’s fall from industry to exploitation. Today, survivors endure in bitterness and poverty, watching strangers flock to a shining playground built on the ruins of their home.

   Key Locations

Mount Corel A jagged mountain ridge whose mines once supplied coal across the continent. Abandoned railways cling to its cliffs, and bridges span deep ravines where trains once carried ore. Now the mines lie quiet, patrolled by monsters and haunted by memories of betrayal.

North Corel The last settlement of the Corel people, built from the ashes of their destroyed village. Its residents live in poverty, despising Shinra and blaming those who trusted the Company. The town survives on scraps of trade from travelers bound for the Gold Saucer.

Gold Saucer A colossal amusement park rising from the desert, built above the prison below. Bright lights, gaudy attractions, and endless games lure crowds from every corner of the world. Behind its glittering façade lies Shinra’s quiet control, for beneath the Saucer lies the Corel Prison, a dumping ground for criminals and undesirables.

Corel Prison A lawless desert settlement, home to convicts and the desperate. No guards watch over the prisoners—only the sand and the creatures beyond keep them penned. Only by winning the favor of Dio, the Saucer’s owner, or through victory in the chocobo races can one escape.

   Geography and Environment

The region is dominated by desert and rock. Sandstorms scour the plains, while little grows except hardy brush. Mount Corel’s ridges cut across the land, making rail travel once vital. The desert heat is unrelenting, and even the night offers little relief. Only the artificial glow of the Gold Saucer breaks the horizon, a beacon of light in an otherwise harsh land.

   Factions and Influence

Shinra Electric Power Company abandoned the region after destroying Corel, though its shadow remains in the Gold Saucer and prison.

Survivors of Corel live in North Corel, their hatred of Shinra and mistrust of outsiders defining daily life.

Gold Saucer Staff serve Dio and Shinra’s hidden interests, maintaining the park’s grandeur while ignoring the suffering below.

Outlaws of Corel Prison govern themselves by violence and strength, their society ruled by chaos.

   Culture

The people of Corel once built lives around coal mining, proud of their trade and their ability to endure the desert’s harshness. That pride was shattered by Shinra’s betrayal, leaving only anger. In North Corel, families pass down bitterness with each generation, seeing the Saucer’s lights as a mockery of their suffering. In the prison, culture has collapsed entirely, replaced by desperation, gambling, and violence.

   Notable Figures

Barret Wallace — Formerly of Corel, blamed by many survivors for trusting Shinra. His story is inseparable from the region’s fate.

Dyne — Barret’s old friend, broken by loss, who rules part of the Corel Prison with madness and grief.

Dio — Eccentric master of the Gold Saucer, flamboyant yet ruthless in his power.

   Significance

The Corel Region is both wound and warning. Its deserts bear the cost of trusting Shinra’s promises, while its survivors embody the bitterness left behind. Yet it is also a place of crossroads: where amusement hides cruelty, where prisoners race for freedom, and where the scars of betrayal never truly fade.

4. #4Gongaga and Cosmo Canyon Regionselective

Keys: Gongaga and Cosmo Canyon Region

   Overview

The southern stretches of the eastern continent are a land of deep forests, scarred ruins, and red cliffs that rise into the burning skies of Cosmo Canyon. This region bears the marks of both Shinra’s ambition and the Planet’s resilience. At Gongaga lies the husk of a failed reactor, its destruction leaving the town stunted and sorrowful. To the west, Cosmo Canyon endures as a bastion of wisdom and spiritual study, a place where the cycle of life and the Lifestream are honored above all else. Between them lies wilderness rich with monsters, rivers, and winding paths, a reminder that nature still holds power beyond human control.

   Key Locations

Gongaga Once a modest village, Gongaga’s fate turned grim when Shinra built a mako reactor nearby. The reactor’s explosion left ruins and contamination, crippling the land and killing many. Today, Gongaga is quiet, its people distrustful of outsiders. The wrecked reactor still stands in the jungle, a rusting scar surrounded by hostile creatures.

Cosmo Canyon A red-rock settlement carved into cliffs and caves, Cosmo Canyon is famed for its study of the Planet’s spirit and the mysteries of the Lifestream. Scholars, travelers, and seekers of truth gather here, guided by Bugenhagen, the canyon’s elder and keeper of its observatories. Fires burn eternally at the canyon’s heart, symbolizing the unbroken bond between life and the Planet. Cosmo Canyon is also the homeland of Nanaki, known to outsiders as Red XIII.

   Surrounding Wilderness

Dense Forests: South of Gongaga, great canopies spread across the land, concealing beasts and travelers alike.

River Paths: Streams and rivers carve through the region, making travel difficult without bridges or chocobos.

Cliff Roads: Leading up to Cosmo Canyon, steep paths wind through the red stone, defensible but treacherous.

   Geography and Environment

The region shifts dramatically from Gongaga’s overgrown jungles to the arid cliffs of Cosmo Canyon. Gongaga lies in the shadow of ruined industry, its soil weakened by the failed reactor. In contrast, Cosmo Canyon thrives in balance with the land: red cliffs glowing at sunset, caves cool and dry, skies open and endless. Wildlife is abundant in the forests, ranging from ordinary animals to creatures twisted by mako residue.

   Factions and Influence

Gongaga Villagers live under the shadow of Shinra’s mistakes, some still bitter, others resigned. They avoid outsiders, but whispers tell of former SOLDIERs once tied to the town.

Cosmo Canyon Scholars dedicate their lives to studying the Planet, the Lifestream, and the flow of life. They stand opposed to Shinra’s reckless use of mako, though their influence is moral rather than military.

Shinra Electric Power Company has little active presence here now, though its reactor ruin remains as a monument to its folly.

   Culture

Gongaga’s culture is marked by loss and quiet endurance. Families live simply, haunted by the destruction of their land, wary of promises from outside powers. Cosmo Canyon, by contrast, is vibrant with tradition. Rituals honor the dead, songs echo through the caves, and the eternal fires light gatherings where scholars and villagers alike speak of the Planet’s memory. Outsiders are welcomed as long as they come with respect, for the canyon stands as a refuge for seekers of truth.

   Notable Figures

Bugenhagen — Elder of Cosmo Canyon, scholar of the Lifestream, and guide to those who seek understanding.

Nanaki (Red XIII) — Guardian of the canyon, last of his kin, torn between the wisdom of the elders and his own path.

Gongaga Villagers — Survivors of the reactor disaster; some mention ties to fallen SOLDIERs, their stories half-whispered.

   Significance

The Gongaga and Cosmo Canyon Region reveals two paths: one of ruin and one of balance. Gongaga shows the scars of Shinra’s failures, while Cosmo Canyon offers wisdom and a warning against repeating such mistakes. Together, they remind travelers that the Planet endures, but it also remembers.

5. #5Midgarselective

   Keys: Midgar

   Overview

Midgar is the greatest city on the eastern continent, built by the Shinra Electric Power Company as both a fortress of industry and a symbol of dominance. Suspended on a colossal steel plate, the city is divided into eight sectors, each sustained by its own mako reactor. The plate gleams with lights and towers where Shinra’s power thrives, while beneath it lie the slums, shrouded in shadow, where millions struggle to survive in poverty. Midgar is not merely a city—it is Shinra itself, the heart of its empire and the engine of its ambitions.

   Districts and Landmarks

   The Plate City

Shinra Headquarters — A towering skyscraper at the city’s center, housing the Company’s executives, laboratories, and command forces.

Upper Sectors — Divided into eight zones, home to wealthier citizens, employees, and infrastructure. The upper city enjoys steady light, artificial parks, and military patrols.

   The Slums

Sector 5 Slums — Home to Aerith Gainsborough and her mother. Known for the only flower garden in Midgar, growing miraculously among ruins.

Wall Market (Sector 6) — A sprawling bazaar of vice, gambling, and crime, ruled by the underworld figure Don Corneo.

Sector 7 Slums — Once a hub of AVALANCHE activity, destroyed when Shinra collapsed the plate to silence resistance.

Train Graveyard — A twisted collection of abandoned engines and carriages near Sector 7, a refuge for the desperate and a haunt for restless spirits.

The Reactors Each sector is powered by a mako reactor, drawing energy directly from the Planet’s life. These reactors are the lifeblood of the city but also the source of its greatest corruption, draining the very essence of the world to fuel Shinra’s empire.

   Geography and Environment

Midgar dominates its surroundings, a steel circle blotting out the sky. The plains around the city are barren, drained of vitality by the reactors. Pollution clouds the skies, while rivers near the city run dull with residue. The only color is found in Aerith’s flowers, a fragile sign of what the land once was.

   Factions and Influence

Shinra Electric Power Company rules every aspect of Midgar. Its president, executives, and military dictate law and order.

The Turks act as covert operatives, carrying out recruitment, assassinations, and cover-ups.

SOLDIER stands as Shinra’s elite fighting force, mako-enhanced warriors who serve as symbols of loyalty and fear.

AVALANCHE once resisted from the slums, striking directly at the reactors in a desperate attempt to save the Planet.

Don Corneo’s Syndicate controls crime in Wall Market, tolerated by Shinra so long as it serves their purposes.

   Culture

Life on the plate is one of artificial comfort—neon lights, clean streets, and the illusion of progress. Beneath it, in the slums, people live among rust and refuse, building homes from scrap and surviving through trade, crime, or sheer will. A deep divide separates the two worlds, yet both are bound by the same dependence on Shinra’s mako power.

   Notable Figures

President Shinra / Rufus Shinra — Masters of the city and the Company.

Heidegger, Scarlet, Palmer, Reeve, Hojo — Shinra’s executive circle, each commanding their branch of power.

The Turks — Tseng, Reno, Rude, Elena; operatives of Shinra’s hidden dealings.

Barret Wallace and AVALANCHE — Resistance fighters who struck from the Sector 7 slums.

Don Corneo — Crime lord of Wall Market.

Aerith Gainsborough — A young woman of the Sector 5 slums, tied to the lost people of the Ancients.

   Significance

Midgar is the crown of Shinra’s empire, the monument of human ambition and greed. Its towers shine with stolen light, while beneath them the Planet suffers. For some, it is a beacon of progress; for others, a prison of steel. In truth, it is both—proof of what humanity can build, and of what it is willing to destroy.

6. #6Plate Cityselective

   Keys: Plate City

   Overview

The Plate City is the shining crown of Midgar, a suspended metropolis built atop a vast steel disc. Divided into eight sectors, each powered by its own mako reactor, it represents Shinra’s triumph in bending both nature and people to its will. Life above the plate is reserved for the privileged: Shinra executives, employees, and those who serve the Company’s vision. Bright with electric light, filled with office towers, markets, and carefully maintained parks, the Plate City stands in stark contrast to the darkness of the slums below.

   Districts and Layout

Sector Districts Each of the eight sectors contains residential blocks, commercial markets, and administrative centers. The sectors are self-sufficient, though heavily dependent on Shinra’s reactors for power.

Central Pillar and Shinra Headquarters At the city’s heart rises the massive central pillar, housing the Shinra Headquarters, an imposing tower visible from anywhere on the plate. Within are the executive offices, research laboratories, military command, and the seat of Shinra’s president.

Parks and Artificial Gardens To offset the lifeless steel surroundings, Shinra maintains small artificial parks across the plate. Grass is imported, trees transplanted, and flowers coaxed to grow under false skies. These spaces serve as both propaganda and distraction for citizens, offering them the illusion of harmony with the Planet.

Commercial Zones Markets, theaters, shopping districts, and entertainment halls serve the upper city’s population. Life here is vibrant, driven by consumer goods and corporate influence.

Transport Systems Trains and service routes connect the sectors, moving workers and goods across the plate. The upper city’s rails are efficient and heavily guarded, unlike the rickety routes beneath.

   Geography and Environment

Suspended far above the ground, the Plate City receives light from floodlamps and neon signs rather than the true sun. Air circulation systems filter pollution from below, though the sky is often hazy with reactor exhaust. The upper world is carefully engineered for comfort, an artificial paradise maintained by the endless draw of mako.

   Factions and Influence

Shinra Executives and Bureaucrats The ruling class of Midgar, dictating every aspect of life above and below. Their wealth and comfort are sustained at the cost of the Planet.

SOLDIER and Shinra Military SOLDIER operatives serve as both symbols and enforcers. Regular troops patrol the plate, guarding Shinra property and suppressing unrest.

Corporate Citizens Most upper residents are Shinra employees and their families. Their loyalty is secured with steady pay, housing, and the comfort of believing Shinra’s propaganda.

The Turks Operating from within Shinra Headquarters, the Turks carry out covert missions, including recruitment, surveillance, and assassination. Their influence stretches silently across the Plate City.

   Culture

The Plate City thrives on illusion. Its citizens live under the glow of mako lights, enjoying luxuries denied to the slums below. Music, theaters, and markets bustle with energy, while Shinra’s constant propaganda reminds all of the Company’s benevolence. Yet beneath the smiles lies dependency: every meal, every light, every breath is provided by Shinra. To question the Company is to risk exile to the shadows beneath the plate.

   Notable Figures

President Shinra — Master of Midgar, ruler of the Plate City.

Rufus Shinra — Heir to the Company’s empire.

Heidegger, Scarlet, Palmer, Reeve, Hojo — Executives who dictate policy, defense, weapons, city planning, and research.

The Turks — Tseng, Reno, Rude, Elena; invisible hands ensuring the Plate remains secure.

   Significance

The Plate City is Shinra’s vision of the future: a gleaming metropolis raised high above the earth, powered by the Planet’s lifeblood. It is both fortress and throne, a place of wealth built on hidden suffering. To live above the plate is to believe in Shinra’s promise of progress. To question it is to invite ruin.

7. #7Shinra Headquartersselective

   Keys: Shinra Headquarters

   Overview

Shinra Headquarters dominates the center of Midgar’s Plate City, rising from the central pillar as a monument to the Company’s power. The tower is both fortress and palace: corporate offices, research laboratories, military command, and propaganda hub all reside within. From this single building, Shinra dictates the flow of energy, wealth, and war across the planet. Its gleaming steel and glass hide the cruelty within, but to the citizens above the plate, it is a beacon of progress and security.

   Structure and Layout

Entrance and Lobby A grand hall designed to impress, lined with marble, holograms, and displays of Shinra’s achievements. Guards are ever-present, and surveillance covers every angle.

Corporate Offices Floors dedicated to Shinra’s bureaucracy: energy, city management, public relations, and finance. Here, executives like Reeve Tuesti oversee the day-to-day function of Midgar.

Research Division Hidden deeper within, laboratories under Professor Hojo conduct experiments on mako infusion, genetic manipulation, and subjects drawn from SOLDIER candidates—or unwilling test subjects.

Military Command War rooms, communication hubs, and planning chambers allow Shinra to coordinate SOLDIER units, the Turks, and its standing armies worldwide.

Weapons Development Scarlet’s domain, where prototypes of artillery, reactors, and war machines are tested before being unleashed.

Executive Suites Luxurious upper floors house Shinra’s President and key leaders. These quarters offer comforts rivaling any palace: imported wines, rare art, and an uninterrupted view of the entire city.

The Boardroom A circular chamber where Shinra’s executives meet. From here, decisions are made that shape the fate of nations.

Top Levels and Helipad The roof offers aerial access for helicopters and airships, used for executive transport and rapid deployment of the Turks or SOLDIER.

   Geography and Environment

Located at the very heart of Midgar’s plate, Shinra Headquarters is connected to every sector by rail and road. The tower looms over all districts, visible from every corner of the Plate City and even from the slums below. Its lights never dim, casting a constant glow that reinforces Shinra’s presence.

   Factions and Influence

   The Shinra Executive Board

President Shinra: Ruler of the Company and Midgar itself.

Rufus Shinra: His son, cold and calculating, waiting to inherit the empire.

Heidegger: Head of Public Safety, commander of Shinra’s armies.

Scarlet: Director of Weapons Development, ruthless and ambitious.

Hojo: Director of Science, known for his twisted experiments.

Palmer: Head of Space Development, often mocked, but still influential.

Reeve Tuesti: Director of Urban Development, tasked with maintaining Midgar’s function.

The Turks Elite covert agents serving directly under Shinra, with offices inside the tower.

SOLDIER The elite warrior corps, mako-enhanced and idolized by the people, answer to this building’s command.

   Culture

Life within Shinra Headquarters is built on hierarchy and ambition. Lower floors are filled with ordinary employees—clerks, technicians, and engineers—who live in awe of their Company. The higher one ascends, the more ruthless the atmosphere becomes. Executives vie for influence, each division advancing its agenda with little regard for consequence. Loyalty to Shinra is demanded, and betrayal is punished with silence.

   Notable Figures

President Shinra — The iron-fisted ruler of the Company.

Rufus Shinra — The ambitious heir, favoring intimidation over wealth.

Heidegger — Commander of Shinra’s military forces.

Scarlet — Weapons designer, reveling in destruction.

Hojo — Mad scientist whose work underpins SOLDIER and Sephiroth.

Palmer — Dreamer of space travel, largely sidelined.

Reeve Tuesti — The lone executive with concern for the people, often overruled.

The Turks — Tseng, Reno, Rude, Elena; agents of the Company’s dirty work.

   Significance

Shinra Headquarters is more than a building—it is the empire’s beating heart. Decisions made within its walls determine the fate of millions. To the people of Midgar, it is untouchable. To the Planet, it is the center of corruption, the place where life is drained, twisted, and sold as progress.

8. #8Upper Sectorsselective

   Keys: Upper Sectors

   Overview

The Upper Sectors of Midgar span the eight zones of the plate above the slums, housing the city’s wealthier citizens, offices, and infrastructure. Maintained by the Shinra Electric Power Company, these sectors are powered by their own mako reactors, carefully regulated to provide constant energy, comfort, and security. Life here is a carefully managed illusion of prosperity, insulated from the pollution, danger, and poverty below the plate.

   Layout and Features

Residential Zones Upper sectors are home to Shinra employees, executives’ families, and the affluent. Buildings are tall, reinforced, and uniform, with clean streets and regulated traffic. Homes are equipped with amenities powered directly by the reactors.

Commercial Districts Markets, shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues cater to citizens above the plate. Goods are imported from other sectors or produced within the city, with Shinra controlling supply chains to ensure loyalty.

Industrial Facilities While the upper sectors are mostly residential and commercial, small-scale industrial workshops exist to support Shinra’s operations. These produce mechanical parts, consumer products, and supplies for the plate city’s upkeep.

Transport Infrastructure Rail lines and service roads connect sectors, linking residential areas with markets, the central pillar, and the Shinra Headquarters. Trains are efficient and well-maintained, allowing rapid movement across the plate.

Public Spaces Shinra maintains artificial parks, small squares, and gardens to provide the appearance of greenery and leisure. These spaces are carefully monitored and often serve as venues for Company propaganda or public gatherings.

   Geography and Environment

Suspended high above the slums, the upper sectors enjoy filtered air, artificial lighting, and security. Pollution from the reactors is minimized, giving the illusion of a clean environment. The sky appears clearer here, though always tinged with the faint glow of the city and reactor output.

   Factions and Influence

Shinra Administration Local managers oversee each sector, ensuring energy distribution, order, and compliance with corporate policies.

Citizen Elite Upper-sector residents are largely employees or affiliates of Shinra, loyal through dependence on its power. Their lifestyle is comfortable but confined by the Company’s regulations and surveillance.

Security Forces Shinra troops patrol streets and rail lines, maintaining peace and suppressing dissent.

   Culture

Life above the plate emphasizes comfort, efficiency, and appearances. Citizens rarely venture to the slums and are taught that Shinra provides stability and opportunity. Social interactions, entertainment, and commerce revolve around Company-sanctioned activities. Luxury and convenience create an artificial sense of security, masking the exploitation that sustains it.

   Notable Figures

Reeve Tuesti — Oversees urban management and sector maintenance.

Shinra Troops — Guards and enforcers patrolling the sectors.

Upper-sector residents — Families, merchants, and office workers reliant on Shinra’s power and influence.

   Significance

The Upper Sectors embody Shinra’s vision of order and prosperity: a clean, controlled environment where dependence on the Company ensures compliance. They stand in stark contrast to the slums below, a reminder that privilege in Midgar is always bought with the labor, suffering, and energy of others.

9. #9The Slumsselective

   Keys: Slums

   Overview

Beneath the steel plate of Midgar lies the Slums, sprawling districts of poverty and shadow. Eight sectors correspond to the plate above, though the lives of those below could not be more different. Here, millions survive among scrap, refuse, and darkness, shielded from the lights above only by the plate itself. Life is harsh, rules are few, and danger—from Shinra, wild beasts, or fellow humans—is ever present.

   Districts and Features

Sector 5 Slums Home to Aerith Gainsborough and her family. The district contains the rare anomaly of a thriving flower garden, a symbol of life persisting against the odds. Residences are small, constructed from scavenged metal and wood.

Sector 6 Slums Hosts Wall Market, a dense network of alleys, shops, and entertainment venues. Crime is common here, managed by Don Corneo’s influence rather than Shinra’s law.

Sector 7 Slums Once the base of AVALANCHE resistance, the area was destroyed when Shinra dropped the plate above, leaving only ruins and memories.

Other Sectors Each slum sector is a patchwork of makeshift homes, narrow streets, and community structures. Basic services are rare; water must be collected from pipes or cisterns, and electricity is improvised.

Train Graveyard A labyrinth of abandoned trains near Sector 7, serving as passageways, shelter, and hiding places for those who navigate the slums.

   Geography and Environment

Darkness dominates the slums; the plate above blocks sunlight, and few artificial lights penetrate the maze of streets. Smog, dust, and the stench of refuse permeate the air. Buildings are stacked and uneven, with stairways, ladders, and scaffolding connecting dwellings. Flooding is common when storms strike, and access to clean water and food is limited.

   Factions and Influence

AVALANCHE A resistance group formed to sabotage Shinra’s reactors. Its members operated covertly from the slums, gaining local support through secrecy and shared suffering.

Don Corneo’s Syndicate Controls commerce in Wall Market, enforcing order through intimidation and bribery.

Local Communities Neighbors rely on each other for trade, protection, and survival. Despite hardship, families form tight bonds, sharing knowledge and resources to endure the city’s shadow.

Shinra Patrols Occasionally enforce order, suppress dissent, or retaliate against resistance actions. Their presence is constant and feared.

   Culture

Life in the slums is defined by resilience and adaptation. Residents construct homes from whatever materials are available, sharing space and resources. Street markets, impromptu schools, and local festivals survive amid scarcity. Children play in narrow alleys, learning the dangers and rules of survival early. Stories of resistance, survival, and the lost glory of the Planet circulate through gossip and rumor.

   Notable Figures

Aerith Gainsborough — Lives quietly in Sector 5, tending flowers and aiding neighbors.

Barret Wallace — Leader of AVALANCHE in Sector 7 before its destruction.

Don Corneo — Crime lord who maintains control over Sector 6’s Wall Market.

Elmyra Gainsborough — Aerith’s caretaker, managing her household and teaching local children.

   Significance

The Slums are the heart of human struggle in Midgar, a stark reminder of the cost of the plate city above.
