1. #1Ponies

   Keys: Ponies, Pony

   Always on · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

Ponies possess orange tongues and equine anatomy only. They have no fingers, hands, or feet—only hooves, with two forelegs and two hindlegs by default. Descriptions of pony characters should avoid natural use of anthropomorphic anatomy.

Earth ponies lack wings and horns. Pegasi possess wings but no horns. Unicorns possess a single horn but no wings. Alicorns uniquely possess both wings and a horn, drawing on traits from all three primary pony types.

In the My Little Pony universe, ponies are magical equines inhabiting the land of Equestria. While they are capable of speech, tool use, flight, and magic, all actions are performed within the limits of equine anatomy and race-specific traits. Ponies are broadly categorized into the three pony tribes—Earth ponies, Pegasi, and unicorns—with Alicorns representing a convergence of these lineages.

Object manipulation is achieved through mouths and hooves by all ponies, wings by Pegasi and Alicorns, and magic by unicorns and Alicorns. When necessary, ponies employ creative solutions or tools to compensate for their anatomy, such as securing objects to a hoof rather than grasping them.

Ponies are capable of expressive and coordinated movement despite lacking hands. Gestures such as saluting, counting, signaling, or mimicking symbols are performed using hooves, wings, or full-body motion. Applause is shown by striking forehooves together or stamping hooves on the ground. Greetings commonly take the form of hoof-to-hoof contact, known as a “brohoof.”

Manes and tails are flexible and frequently used for balance, carrying items, sweeping, or manipulating objects. Some ponies, notably Pinkie Pie, employ their mane and tail in exaggerated or unconventional ways, while others use their tails for tasks such as catching or tossing objects.

Unicorns and Alicorns preferentially use horn-based magic for precision tasks and manipulation, reducing reliance on physical contact when magic is available.

2. #2Earth Ponies

   Keys: Earth Ponies, Earth Pony

   Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

Earth ponies cannot use magic or fly, as they possess neither horns nor wings.

Earth ponies are one of Equestria’s three primary pony types, alongside unicorns and Pegasi. They lack spellcasting and flight, but their deep connection to the land, animals, and physical labor makes them essential to Equestria’s survival and development. As shown in Hearth’s Warming Eve, they were one of the founding tribes, responsible for food production while Pegasi managed the weather and unicorns controlled celestial cycles. Their work forms the backbone of daily life, from agriculture and settlement building to transportation and machinery operation. Ponyville itself was founded by Earth ponies, according to Granny Smith.

They are known for exceptional strength, stamina, and balance, frequently performing feats beyond the capability of other ponies. Big McIntosh’s raw power, Applejack’s endurance, and Pinkie Pie’s agility exemplify this, with many Earth ponies using their tails as an additional limb for precise manipulation. These abilities support tasks such as farming, herding, snow clearing, construction, and industrial labor. While agriculture is common, Earth ponies also thrive in business, entertainment, education, medicine, and other professions, demonstrating broad versatility rather than a single specialization.

Earth ponies are widespread throughout Equestria, dominating towns like Ponyville and Appleloosa and forming influential populations in cities such as Manehattan. Although they cannot naturally access cloud-based locations like Cloudsdale, their bond with the land and their physical capabilities secure their indispensable role in Equestrian society, complementing the magic of unicorns and the flight and weather control of Pegasi.

3. #3Pegasi

   Keys: Pegasus, Pegasi

   Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

Pegasi do not use magic, as they lack horns.

Pegasus ponies, one of Equestria’s three primary pony types, are defined by their wings and their ability to fly, walk on clouds, and control the weather. Before Equestria’s founding, they were a militaristic tribe led by Commander Hurricane, maintaining the skies in exchange for food from Earth ponies. This history shaped them into exceptionally fast and agile fliers, capable of precise maneuvers and coordinated feats of wing power. Despite their aerial focus, Pegasi are also capable on the ground, with examples like Rainbow Dash matching Earth ponies in races. They alone can naturally sit, perch, and rest on clouds, a trait others require magic to replicate.

Pegasus wings are highly versatile, enabling flight, acrobatics, and fine manipulation. Trained Pegasi can support their full body weight on their wings or use them with near hand-like precision for tasks such as pulling wagons, retrieving items, or signaling through gestures. The most extreme expression of Pegasus speed and power is the sonic rainboom, a rare maneuver achieved only by Rainbow Dash.

Pegasi are essential to Equestria’s weather system, working in teams to manage clouds, rain, snow, and storms. From Cloudsdale, they create snowflakes, mix rainbows, generate thunder and lightning, and use coordinated wing power to move vast amounts of water. While other pony types and magical beings may assist, Pegasi perform the majority of weather control.

They live both in mixed towns like Ponyville and in cloud-only cities such as Cloudsdale, which only Pegasi can inhabit naturally. Their unique combination of flight, cloud interaction, and weather control makes them vital to Equestria’s balance and infrastructure.

4. #4Unicorns

   Keys: Unicorns, Unicorn

   Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

Unicorns cannot fly by conventional means, as they lack wings.

Unicorn ponies are one of Equestria’s three primary pony types, defined by their horns and innate magical ability. Before Equestria’s founding, they formed a tribe tasked with raising the sun and moon, trading their magic for food from Earth ponies under the leadership of Princess Platinum. This specialization shaped unicorn culture, with many serving as scholars, spellcasters, and magical specialists.

A unicorn’s horn channels its magic and glows when spells are cast. Beyond magic, the horn is physically sturdy enough for simple tasks, but its condition directly affects spellcasting; damage, obstruction, or corruption can weaken or distort magical output. While a few unicorns possess broad, powerful magic, most excel in spells related to their special talents, requiring focus, effort, and line of sight.

Telekinesis is a common ability among unicorns, allowing them to lift and manipulate objects, while other spells range from basic utilities to complex alterations of matter and energy. Magic typically appears as a colored aura around the horn and target, often matching eye color or cutie mark hues, though variations can signal outside interference or corruption. Young unicorns may exhibit uncontrolled surges of magic, enabling dramatic but unstable feats.

Unicorns are most prominent in Canterlot and are common in mixed towns like Ponyville, but they are largely absent from cloud cities such as Cloudsdale unless aided by magic. Their mastery of magic and scholarship makes them essential to Equestria, balancing the strength of Earth ponies and the flight and weather control of Pegasi.

5. #5Bat Ponies

   Keys: Batponies, Batpony, Bat

   Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

The Bat Ponies are a rarely seen tribe of Pony. The most notable members are part of the Royal Guards of Equestria, serving Princess Luna/Nightmare Moon specifically. These guards are often referred to as "Night Guards"

Bat Ponies are flight capable ponies, similar to Pegasi but with bat wings, tufted ears, and eyes that are slitted in fashion similar to cats. These eyes are accustomed to seeing in the dark, making daylight at times difficult for the Bat Ponies to endure. They also have the ability to use echolocation.

Bat ponies often make their homes in underground caverns.

6. #6Alicorns

   Keys: Alicorns, Alicorn

   Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

Alicorns are a rare and unique type of pony in Equestria, possessing both a unicorn horn and Pegasus wings, and in some portrayals, the inherent strength or connection to nature typical of Earth ponies. This combination grants them the magical abilities of unicorns, the flight and cloud-walking talents of Pegasi, and occasionally the grounded endurance or affinity for nature associated with Earth ponies, making them among the most versatile and powerful beings in Equestria. Alicorns are almost universally depicted as royalty or figures of high status, often referred to as princesses, though the title is not merely hereditary; according to Meghan McCarthy, head writer of Friendship is Magic, being a princess in Equestria is a distinction that must be earned, reflecting accomplishments, leadership, or contributions to the greater good of the realm. Different sources describe them variously as Princess Ponies, Pegasus Unicorns, or Pegasus unicorns, highlighting their combined traits and elevated social role. Their presence typically signals authority, wisdom, and exceptional magical potential, and they often serve as leaders, rulers, or protectors within Equestrian society.

7. #7Crystal Ponies

   Keys: Crystal Pony, Crystal Ponies

   Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

Crystal Ponies are a distinct type of pony native to the Crystal Empire, first appearing in the season three premiere of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. They are visually distinguished from other ponies by their shimmering, gradient-colored manes and tails, as well as their typically polygonal, crystalline-looking eye reflections. Their magical abilities are linked to their emotional state: when the Crystal Empire is filled with hope and love, their magic can radiate throughout Equestria, powering the Crystal Heart and sustaining their kingdom.

The Crystal Ponies’ history is marked by King Sombra’s curse, which erased their memories and dulled their natural crystalline colors. When Twilight Sparkle and her friends visit the Crystal Empire, they find the ponies speaking in low, monotone voices and unable to recall much about their culture. Through efforts like the Crystal Faire in The Ballad of the Crystal Empire, the Mane Six help the Crystal Ponies rediscover their heritage, from jousting and making sweets to playing crystal flugelhorns and singing the Crystal Kingdom anthem. As the ponies reconnect with their history and Cadance defeats King Sombra using the Crystal Heart, the Crystal Ponies regain their sparkling, translucent colors.

Crystal Ponies continue to appear throughout the series in both major and background roles: attending events like the Grand Equestria Pony Summit (Princess Spike), participating in the Equestria Games (Rainbow Falls, Trade Ya!), and appearing in Ponyville (Magical Mystery Cure). They are also shown being enslaved by King Sombra upon his return in The Beginning of the End - Part 1, only to be freed once again when Cadance restores the Crystal Heart. Their culture emphasizes community, joy, and a connection between emotional harmony and magical power, reflecting the unique interplay of magic and morale in the Crystal Empire.

8. #8Changeling

   Keys: Changelings, Changeling

   Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

Changelings are a species of magical, largely equine creatures with insect-like features, first introduced as antagonists in A Canterlot Wedding – Part 2. Their natural form is black and carapace-like, with webbed manes and tails, jagged horns, fangs, insect wings, bent ears, and holes in their legs, lacking any cutie marks. They possess the ability to shapeshift, allowing them to imitate ponies, non-pony creatures, and even inanimate objects. Their society, led by Queen Chrysalis, revolves around feeding on the love of others, a trait reminiscent of folkloric changelings. The species reproduces via eggs that hatch into larvae, further emphasizing their insectoid nature.

Changelings first make a major appearance when Chrysalis infiltrates Canterlot, impersonating Princess Cadance, while her minions take the forms of Twilight Sparkle and the Mane Six, aiming to seize Equestria’s love to increase their power. They temporarily capture the Mane Six and Princess Celestia, and are ultimately defeated when Shining Armor and Princess Cadance combine their magic to expel them from Canterlot. Afterward, individual changelings like Kevin make occasional appearances, often in the background, highlighting the continuity of their presence in Equestria.

The changelings’ evolution is explored further in To Where and Back Again, where Chrysalis’ hive silently takes over Ponyville and the Castle of Friendship. They serve as her primary defense until Thorax, a changeling who has embraced friendship and cooperation, guides the species to transform their method of obtaining love from parasitic to reciprocal. This metamorphosis restores their bodies, eliminating fangs, holes, and their dark coloration, and brings a more varied, colorful appearance among the hive, with some losing or altering their horns, tails, and other insect traits. Chrysalis is dethroned, Thorax becomes leader, and the hive begins engaging in cultural and recreational activities such as arts, theatre, and therapy forums, reflecting their new, cooperative ethos.

Despite these reforms, some changelings retain the old ways, including Thorax’s brother Pharynx, though they gradually accept the new order. Younger changelings, like Ocellus, participate in the School of Friendship, learning to integrate with ponies and other species. Changelings also appear during celebrations such as Hearth’s Warming, often taking instructions literally due to their literal-minded nature. Throughout the series, they continue to play both background and active roles in key events, assisting the ponies when needed, using their shapeshifting abilities strategically in battles, and maintaining the hive as a thriving, reformed society. Their story arc illustrates a journey from predatory survival to mutual cooperation, highlighting themes of redemption, identity, and the transformative power of friendship.

9. #9Griffons

   Keys: Griffon, Griffons

   Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

Griffons are hybrid creatures in Equestria, featuring the front half of an eagle—complete with beak, wings, and talons—and the back half of a lion, including its hind legs, tail, and fur. This combination gives them the abilities of both species: flight using their powerful wings and physical strength from their lion halves.

The first named griffon introduced in the series is Gilda, who appears in Griffon the Brush Off. She is notable for her brash, prideful personality, reflecting typical griffon traits of independence and self-confidence. Other griffons appear throughout the show and extended media, often as background characters or in episodes involving griffon society, such as in Filli Vanilli and Rarity Takes Manehattan. Interestingly, of the named griffons, roughly two-thirds have names beginning with the letter “G,” a quirky naming pattern seen in characters like Gabby, Gustav, and Griff.

Griffons in Equestria tend to live in isolated communities such as Griffonstone and exhibit a proud, sometimes territorial culture, valuing honor and personal prowess, though they can form friendships and alliances with ponies and other creatures under the right circumstances.

10. #10Dragons

    Keys: Dragon, Dragons

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Dragons in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic are a diverse species, varying in size, color, and age, with most resembling classical European dragons featuring large bodies, long necks and tails, scales, bat-like wings, and claws rather than hooves. They appear across numerous episodes and media, with Spike serving as the primary representative of young dragons. Unlike the other dragons, Spike is small, wingless for most of the series, and characterized by his ability to send scrolls magically via fire breath, his immunity to lava, and his love of eating gems, which plays a recurring comedic role. Despite his youthful size, Spike can temporarily grow into a much larger form, exhibiting lizard-like traits such as slit pupils and a forked tongue, particularly when affected by greed, as seen in Secret of My Excess. Spike also experiences the natural molt of adolescent dragons, which results in painful scale growth, fire burps, and eventually the emergence of wings.

Adult and teenage dragons populate the Dragon Lands, a volcanic region east of Equestria, and are portrayed with varied appearances and temperaments. Classic adult dragons include the red dragon Razer, who threatens Equestria with a massive cloud of smoke, and a green dragon named Gostir, whose hoard of gems Spike samples. Teenage dragons, introduced prominently in Dragon Quest, such as Garble, Crackle, Fume, Clump, Charcoal, and Backdraft, show a wide range of colors, horns, tail shapes, and wings, with most walking on two legs. These dragons are often playful, competitive, or territorial, and participate in cultural rituals such as the Feast of Fire, where storytelling and gem-gathering contests are central traditions.

The Dragon Lands and their inhabitants play key roles in the show’s larger narrative. Dragon Lord Torch and his daughter, Princess Ember, oversee governance and the Gauntlet of Fire, a test to determine succession. Ember befriends Spike and Twilight’s friends, seeking to maintain peaceful relations with ponies and other creatures, even mediating conflicts like the Second Dragon-Yak War. Other dragons, like Smolder, serve as bridges between dragon culture and Equestrian society, enrolling in the School of Friendship and helping with crises such as the hatching of dragon eggs in Sweet and Smoky.

Dragons frequently appear in both main plots and background scenes, often reflecting their society’s customs, aggressive tendencies, or comical quirks, such as hoarding gems or competing in physical contests. They also participate in collaborative events alongside ponies and other magical creatures, including battles against villains like Queen Chrysalis, Lord Tirek, and Cozy Glow. Over the course of the series, dragons evolve from largely isolated, territorial creatures into a more integrated and cooperative part of Equestrian society, highlighting themes of friendship, understanding, and cultural exchange.

11. #11Hippogriff

    Keys: Hippogriff, Hippogriffs

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Hippogriffs in Equestria are majestic creatures combining the front half of an eagle—with sharp eyes, powerful talons, and expansive wings—with the hind legs and tail of a pony, giving them both aerial agility and terrestrial grace. They play a central role in My Little Pony: The Movie and its extended universe, originating from the city of Hippogriffia atop Mount Aris. Historically, the Hippogriffs were forced to flee when the Storm King invaded their homeland. To protect her people, Queen Novo used powerful magic to transform herself and her subjects into seaponies, allowing them to escape to the ocean, establishing a new society in Seaquestria. Despite this transformation, some Hippogriffs retained the ability to revert to their original form, and over time a portion of the population returned to Mount Aris to repopulate their ancestral home, while others chose to remain as seaponies.

Prominent Hippogriff characters include Princess Skystar, Queen Novo’s daughter, who transforms back into a Hippogriff to journey on land alongside Twilight Sparkle and the Mane Six, and Silverstream, introduced as a Hippogriff student in School Daze - Part 1, alongside her family members, Ocean Flow, Sky Beak, and Terramar, who illustrate the coexistence of seaponies and Hippogriffs in the same lineage. The society of Hippogriffs is depicted with a rich hierarchy and disciplined military presence, including figures like Stratus Skyranger, a high-ranking royal guard, and Seaspray, a naval general. The young of the species, seen playfully in the movie’s end credits, hint at the enduring vitality and community bonds of Hippogriffs.

Hippogriffs in Equestria draw inspiration from classical mythology, where they are depicted in Greek and Latin literary traditions as creatures with the front half of an eagle and the hind half of a horse, symbolizing a fusion of speed, power, and nobility—a thematic reflection mirrored in their magical and cultural significance within the My Little Pony universe.

12. #12Seaponies and mermares

    Keys: mermares, Seaponies, mermare, seapony

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Seaponies and mermares in Equestria are aquatic pony-like beings that blend elements of mythological creatures like sirens and kelpies with features inspired by real-life seahorses and the hippocampus. They inhabit the underwater kingdom of Seaquestria, a realm introduced in My Little Pony: The Movie, and continue to appear across the series, comics, storybooks, and other media. Seaponies are distinguished by their upper bodies resembling ponies, complete with manes, expressive faces, and cutie marks—often displayed on their dorsal fins—while their lower bodies are serpentine or fish-like, allowing them to navigate the ocean with grace and agility. Mermares are essentially the same species, with subtle differences in terminology that emphasize adult or royal individuals within seapony society.

The history of seaponies is closely tied to that of the Hippogriffs. Queen Novo and her subjects were originally Hippogriffs from Mount Aris, forced to flee to the ocean when the Storm King invaded their homeland. Using her magic, Novo transformed herself and her people into seaponies to survive underwater. Despite this transformation, many retain the ability to shift back into their Hippogriff form, and over time some returned to repopulate Mount Aris while others remained in Seaquestria. This duality is exemplified by characters such as Princess Skystar, who shifts freely between Hippogriff and seapony forms to interact with both land and sea-dwelling ponies, and Silverstream, a student at the School of Friendship, who uses a magical necklace to change forms. Ocellus, a changeling student, also demonstrates the ability to transform into a seapony in Non-Compete Clause, highlighting the magical fluidity of these aquatic creatures.

Seaponies maintain a distinct culture adapted to life underwater, with social structures, customs, and etiquette referenced in episodes like Shadow Play - Part 2, where Twilight Sparkle discovers a book detailing proper seapony behavior. In addition to their daily life in Seaquestria, seaponies actively participate in significant events within Equestria, such as the climactic battle against Queen Chrysalis, Lord Tirek, and Cozy Glow in The Ending of the End - Part 2, where they are rallied by Silverstream to aid their friends. The species demonstrates both adaptability and loyalty, bridging the gap between the terrestrial Hippogriffs and the aquatic environment of Seaquestria, and their unique biology, culture, and magical capabilities make them a compelling and versatile addition to the diverse population of Equestria.

13. #13Kirin

    Keys: Nirik, niriks, kirins, Kirin

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Kirin are a unique type of pony introduced in the eighth season of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic in the episode Sounds of Silence, though they first appeared on expanded maps of Equestria in a location called Kirin Grove. They are depicted as a serene and peaceful tribe, celebrated for their kindness, honesty, and love of music and performance, with a culture rich in singing, dancing, musical theatre, and stand-up comedy. Physically, Kirin are distinguishable from regular ponies by their bushy manes that frame their faces, slightly elongated ears, curved or branching horns, scaly carapaces along their muzzles and backs, thin tails, and tufted, cloven hooves. They also share magical abilities with unicorns, such as telekinesis, allowing them to manipulate objects with their minds.

Despite their generally calm demeanor, Kirin possess a dangerous side: when their tempers flare, they transform into fiery, rage-filled beasts called Nirik, a name derived from reversing "Kirin." The tribe’s history reflects this volatility, as uncontrolled anger once led to the accidental destruction of their home. To prevent further catastrophe, their leader, Rain Shine, guided the tribe through the mystical Stream of Silence, a magical stream that suppresses their emotions and voices, ensuring that they no longer lose control. Among the Kirin, Autumn Blaze is notable for being the first to break free from the Stream’s effects, reclaiming her voice and emotions while learning to balance her inner calm with her fiery potential. In The Last Problem, Kirin are shown participating in the broader Equestrian society, appearing in future Canterlot and as students at the School of Friendship, suggesting their culture continues to integrate with other pony communities while preserving their unique traditions and magical heritage.

14. #14Draconequus

    Keys: Draconequus

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Draconequus are a hybrid species. The only draconequus encountered or at least mentioned in Equestria's long history is Discord. He is most likely a one-of-a-kind creature.

Draconequus are a chimera species like griffins, being a fusion of many more creatures. Discord himself has a lion's paw, a griffin's talon, a lizard tail, a reptile's leg, and a goat's leg. He also has two yellow eyes with red pupils and two mismatched horns on his head. Two mismatched wings, a light blue pegasus wing and a light purple bat wing, adorned Discord's back and his head was roughly pony-esque.

Draconequus have demonstrated their omnipotence, the ability to use powerful, reality altering magic. This magic is exceptionally powerful, with Discord being capable of controlling the sun and moon, altering pony minds, and spawning things from nowhere all with the snap of a finger. The very source of his reality warping abilities is unknown. He is possibly born with it.

15. #15Abada

    Entry settings

Abada are equine-like creatures from the zebra country of Farasi. They are similar to unicorns, except they have two curved horns (one in front that's shorter than the other), thin and slightly angular bodies, backswept ears, and thin tails. Two of Zecora's childhood friends are abada named Dust Devil and Cactus Rose.

In African mythology, the abada is an animal similar to a unicorn that has two crooked horns instead of a unicorn's single straight horn.

16. #16Timberwolves

    Keys: Timber wolf, Timberwolves

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Timberwolves are a magical species of wolf-like creatures in Equestria, first appearing in the second season episode Family Appreciation Day. Their name references the real-world gray wolf, commonly known as the timber wolf, but unlike their natural counterparts, these creatures are composed entirely of twigs, logs, and leaves, giving them an eerie, forest-bound appearance. Despite their wooden, plant-like construction, they behave like predatory wolves, displaying cunning, aggression, and pack dynamics. The depiction of timberwolves has evolved over the series: while initially animated in traditional 2D Flash, later appearances in Spike at Your Service and The Cutie Re-Mark – Part 2 utilize 3D computer models, highlighting a more dynamic, detailed design.

In Family Appreciation Day, the timberwolves’ howls are described by Granny Smith as the herald of the yearly zap apple harvest, tying them to the rhythms of Equestrian agriculture and folklore. They first appear in her flashback story of venturing into the Everfree Forest, where the creatures relentlessly chase her after she disturbs a zap apple tree. Their attacks are both relentless and inventive, requiring Granny Smith to clang pots and pans to scare them off. Later stories depict their more formidable abilities: in Spike at Your Service, Applejack must defend Spike against their hunger-driven assaults. Timberwolves are capable of breaking into pieces and dissolving into smoke when damaged, only to reassemble again, a trait that peaks when they combine into the enormous Timberwolf King, a massive and terrifying form that Spike ultimately defeats by suffocation.

Overall, timberwolves combine naturalistic wolf behaviors with magical, plant-based physiology, serving as both narrative antagonists and symbols of the wild, mysterious aspects of Equestria’s forests. Their ability to disassemble and reassemble, coupled with their distinctive foul breath and communal hunting tactics, emphasizes their role as both dangerous and fantastical predators within the series.

17. #17Breezies

    Keys: Breezie, Breezies

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Breezies are a rare, delicate, and intelligent species native to Equestria, resembling tiny, pixie-like ponies with wings, luminescent antennae, and a strong connection to magic activated by gentle breezes. First mentioned by Fluttershy in Three's a Crowd and physically introduced in It Ain’t Easy Being Breezies, Breezies rely on the wind both to fly and to carry the pollen they gather, making them highly vulnerable to strong gusts or obstacles. Their society is structured around periodic migrations, during which they travel through Ponyville aided by breezes generated by local Pegasi, showcasing their graceful, fairy-like nature. The Breezies’ lives are intricately linked to environmental conditions, requiring calm winds and protection from sudden disturbances, emphasizing their fragility and dependence on cooperative care.

In their debut episode, a mishap caused by Spike separates some of the Breezies from the main swarm, and Fluttershy takes them into her care. Among them is Seabreeze, a short-tempered and perfectionist Breezie who criticizes his peers’ perceived incompetence and initially attempts to face the elements alone, only to be rescued by Fluttershy. The situation underscores the Breezies’ delicate nature and social dynamics, where Seabreeze stands out as both assertive and more capable of speech in their native language, which resembles Scandinavian tongues, though most Breezies understand pony speech. Fluttershy ultimately convinces the group to return home, aided by Twilight and her friends, who transform into Breezies to supplement their numbers and ensure a safe passage through the wind. Seabreeze’s gratitude is expressed with a small flower gift to Fluttershy, highlighting the mutual respect and connection between ponies and Breezies.

Beyond their initial appearance, Breezies are shown in several flashbacks, cameos, and memory sequences throughout the series, including Twilight’s Kingdom, Make New Friends but Keep Discord, and The Last Problem, often illustrating their dependency on breezes and their limited flying strength. Their home is a secluded hollow separated from Equestria by a magical portal that opens intermittently, reinforcing their rarity and isolation. Functionally, Breezies combine fragility, magical attunement, and social complexity, with luminescent antennae that provide light in dark spaces, as seen when Seabreeze illuminates a beehive. Their characterization blends ethereal beauty, vulnerability, and a whimsical connection to the natural elements of Equestria, making them both enchanting and delicate participants in the world’s ecology.

18. #18Cockatrice

    Keys: Cockatrice, Cockatrices

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

In Equestria, cockatrices are depicted as fearsome, magical creatures with the head of a chicken and the serpentine body of a snake. Their most notable feature is their petrifying gaze, which can instantly turn living beings to stone. This ability is both formidable and reversible, as demonstrated in Stare Master, where Fluttershy confronts a cockatrice in the Everfree Forest. When Twilight Sparkle is found turned to stone and a missing chicken is petrified, Fluttershy bravely commands the creature to restore them, gradually risking petrification herself. Her courage and assertiveness compel the cockatrice to reverse the effects, highlighting that while their gaze is dangerous, it can be undone through the intervention of those who show resolve and compassion.

Cockatrices appear throughout the series and extended media, often tied to magical research or rare sightings. In School Raze, a cockatrice is imprisoned in Tartarus, and its natural magic is harnessed to aid Twilight and her friends in their escape, temporarily separating the creature into its chicken and snake components. Silverstream studies cockatrices for a research project in Student Counsel, while a flock is encountered during their annual migration by Starlight Glimmer, Trixie, Maud Pie, Mudbriar, and Terramar, indicating that these creatures are not singular but can exist in larger populations. Additionally, Scootaloo’s parents are shown keeping a cockatrice in a cage in The Last Crusade, reflecting their manageability under supervision.

Cockatrices have also been featured in extended materials such as comics, toys, and games. In a mini-comic accompanying Friendship is Magic Issue 4, a horde of giant mutant cockatrices attempts to invade Canterlot during the passing of the Secretariat comet, only to be defeated by Spike and Princess Celestia. The creature appears in various publications, promotional materials, and role-playing game supplements, reinforcing its presence in the broader MLP universe. Gameloft’s mobile game even includes a cockatrice as a playable character, whose bio humorously notes that these creatures arise when a dragon mistakenly broods a chicken egg, underscoring their whimsical yet dangerous nature. Drawing from classical legend, the MLP cockatrice retains the traditional medieval imagery of a two-legged, rooster-headed dragon, blending mythological roots with the franchise’s unique, magical ecosystem.

19. #19Fruit Bat

    Keys: Fruit Bats, Fruit Bat

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

In Equestria, fruit bats are whimsical, colorful creatures first seen in Apple Family Reunion and referenced in Bats!, notable for their vivid, rainbow-hued bodies and playful, fruit-like appearances. Unlike real-world bats, their midsections often resemble the fruit from which they take their names—red fruit bats, in particular, look like strawberries—and many even have leaves for ears, adding to their fantastical charm. Colonies of these bats are known to inhabit the trees of Sweet Apple Acres, where they flit about the orchards, and a few appear in Dr. Fauna’s clinic in Fluttershy Leans In. Their presence extends beyond the series, appearing on comic book covers such as My Little Pony Micro-Series Issue #4 and Friends Forever Issue #4, as well as in chapter books like Twilight Sparkle and the Crystal Heart Spell, where Fluttershy adopts a bat named Toby, and in roleplaying game materials.

A darker, more mischievous counterpart exists in the form of vampire fruit bats, introduced in the episode Bats!. These bats are generally dark in color, with piercing red eyes and pronounced fangs, and are considered pests by the Apple family because they drain the juice from apples during the harvest season. Despite their troublesome habits, the vampire fruit bats inadvertently contribute to the orchards’ long-term health by dispersing apple seeds, which helps grow stronger, more productive trees. The episode depicts a humorous conflict in which Fluttershy and her friends attempt to tame the bats, only for their efforts to backfire. Ultimately, Applejack negotiates a compromise by constructing a dedicated sanctuary for the vampire fruit bats, allowing them to feed without damaging the orchards. Together, fruit bats and their vampire cousins exemplify the show’s approach to magical fauna: whimsical, slightly mischievous, yet often intertwined with the natural balance of Equestria’s environment.

20. #20Parasprites

    Entry settings

Parasprites are small, insect-like creatures introduced in Swarm of the Century, notable for their insatiable appetites, rapid reproduction, and mischievous behavior. Their name combines “parasite” with “sprite,” reflecting both their diminutive, sprite-like appearance and their tendency to overwhelm anything in their path, a trait reminiscent of the tribbles from Star Trek as noted by Lauren Faust. When Fluttershy first encounters a parasprite, she is charmed by its chirping and seemingly harmless demeanor, but its ravenous appetite quickly becomes apparent when it consumes an entire basket of apples in seconds. Unaware of the danger, Fluttershy brings the parasprite into Ponyville, where her friends adopt it, and overnight the single creature multiplies into enormous swarms through asexual reproduction, literally coughing up new parasprites. The pests rapidly devour crops, food stores, and even non-organic materials after Twilight Sparkle attempts a spell to limit their diet, creating chaos that the ponies struggle to contain despite multiple attempts to round them up. Twilight seeks advice from Zecora, who offers no solution, leaving the problem unresolved until Pinkie Pie intervenes. By harnessing her musical talents and playing an array of instruments she collected over the course of the episode, Pinkie Pie leads the parasprites in a mesmerizing parade into the Everfree Forest, echoing the Pied Piper myth. Princess Celestia, arriving just in time to witness the spectacle, is impressed by the display but diverts her attention to an “infestation” elsewhere, leaving Ponyville relieved and the crisis averted.

Beyond their debut, parasprites appear sporadically throughout the series. During Magic Duel, Twilight summons a single parasprite, which reproduces rapidly before she disposes of it to prevent another outbreak. They are referenced in various episodes and flashbacks, such as Leap of Faith and Twilight’s Kingdom - Part 1, where Big Wig is shown covered in motionless parasprites, and in Bloom & Gloom, where they appear in Apple Bloom’s dream. Their cultural presence extends to Ponyville’s merchandise and background details, appearing as plush toys in arcades and stores in episodes like Viva Las Pegasus, A Flurry of Emotions, Grannies Gone Wild, and Growing Up is Hard to Do. The parasprites’ combination of charm, chaos, and remarkable reproductive capabilities cements them as one of Equestria’s most memorable and mischievous magical pests.

21. #21Phoenixes

    Keys: Phoenix, Phoenixes

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Phoenixes in Equestria are magical birds defined by their extraordinary regenerative abilities, most notably the capacity to burst into flames and be reborn from their ashes. The first phoenix introduced in the series, Philomena, appears in A Bird in the Hoof as a nearly featherless, sickly bird under Princess Celestia’s care. Fluttershy attempts to nurse Philomena back to health, only to witness the bird repeatedly molt, cough, and appear ill. The true nature of the phoenix is revealed when Philomena suddenly bursts into flames, leaving behind a pile of ashes, and then emerges fully renewed with radiant red plumage. Princess Celestia explains to Fluttershy that this cycle of fiery rebirth is natural for phoenixes, illustrating their mystical resilience and symbolic connection to renewal.

Phoenixes continue to appear throughout the series, with Spike encountering more in Dragon Quest. When a group of adolescent dragons attempts to raid a phoenix nest for eggs, the parent phoenixes protect their hatchlings by blinding the dragons with a flash of light, allowing the young phoenixes to escape. Spike discovers an unhatched egg left behind, rescues it, and later raises the phoenix named Peewee, eventually returning him to his parents. The bird’s life cycle, behavior, and magical properties are further explored in episodes such as Molted Down, where Peewee matures, and Rarity collects phoenix feathers for her designs, though the feathers’ potent magic causes her temporary hearing loss.

Phoenixes also appear culturally and in background details across Equestria, reinforcing their presence in everyday life and popular culture. Phoenix-themed items appear in merchandise and events: plush dolls are found in arcades in Grannies Gone Wild and as prizes in the Appleloosa County Fair in Growing Up is Hard to Do. The birds inspire fashion and products within the world as well, such as Rarity’s phoenix-feather designs and Scootaloo’s phoenix-themed cart in The Cart Before the Ponies, and even fragrance, as seen with Wind Rider’s Juniper Phoenix cologne in Rarity Investigates!. Their combination of magical regeneration, fiery aesthetics, and cultural influence establishes phoenixes as both a symbol of rebirth and a beloved mystical creature within Equestria.

22. #22Quarray eel

    Keys: eel, Quarray, eels

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Quarray eels are terrestrial, predatory creatures native to Ghastly Gorge in Equestria, distinguished by their large, burgundy-colored serpentine bodies and aggressive territorial behavior. Unlike real-world eels, which are aquatic, quarray eels live in holes carved into the sides of cliffs, where they make their nests and can breathe air, giving them a distinctly terrestrial lifestyle. Their name is a playful combination of “moray eel” and “quarry,” hinting both at their physical resemblance to morays and their habitat among rocky gorges.

These eels are particularly noted for their defensive aggression: when anyone or any animal approaches too closely to their nests, quarray eels will pop their heads from their burrows and attempt to attack. This behavior is prominently featured in May the Best Pet Win!, where Rainbow Dash guides prospective pets through the gorge. While Rainbow Dash skillfully evades the eels, other contestants face direct attacks: a bat narrowly escapes being swallowed, an eagle almost loses its head, an owl uses its wings to prop open an eel’s jaws, and a falcon has its tail feathers bitten before escaping. Their predatory nature recurs in Rock Solid Friendship, where Pinkie Pie saves an unsuspecting Maud Pie from an eel in the same perilous gorge, and they appear in the background as Princess Celestia zip-lines through Between Dark and Dawn.

Quarray eels are referenced in other media as well, appearing in flashbacks in My Little Pony: Friends Forever Issue #4 and mentioned in stories like Rainbow Dash and the Daring Do Double Dare. They are characterized as formidable, opportunistic predators of Equestria’s rocky landscapes, combining the physical intimidation of large serpents with surprising dexterity and environmental adaptation that allows them to thrive entirely on land.

23. #23Ursa

    Keys: Ursas, Ursa

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Ursa major and ursa minor are enormous, magical bear-like creatures in Equestria, distinguished by their partially translucent forms and fur that resembles the night sky, speckled with stars. These celestial bears embody both awe and danger, their immense size and ethereal glow immediately setting them apart from ordinary wildlife. The ursas make their first prominent appearance in the episode Boast Busters, where Trixie boasts of having defeated an ursa major threatening Hoofington, a claim quickly exposed as false when two young ponies, Snips and Snails, lure an ursa from the Everfree Forest into Ponyville. Trixie is confronted with her exaggeration, admitting she has never vanquished such a creature, though she insists that “no one can vanquish an ursa major.” The creature she faces turns out to be an ursa minor, which Twilight Sparkle pacifies using magic and a lullaby, further soothing it with a massive container of cow’s milk before returning it to its mother, the ursa major. This mother-and-child dynamic recurs across their appearances, echoing the mythological origins of the Ursa constellations, in which Zeus transformed the nymph Callisto and her son into celestial bears, placing them in the night sky.

The ursas reappear in flashbacks and magical mishaps throughout the series and other media. An ursa minor features in Magic Duel during a recap of Boast Busters, while Tempest Shadow recalls encountering one in Open Up Your Eyes from My Little Pony: The Movie. In A Matter of Principals, Discord conjures an ursa major out of Trixie’s hat during a magic act, and in Frenemies, Queen Chrysalis briefly transforms into an ursa minor, further illustrating the bears’ magical resonance. These creatures are also referenced in tie-in materials: plush ursa toys appear at fairs, alternate depictions portray the ursa minor as bright green and fully opaque, and the south of Equestria features the “Ursa Major caverns” on in-universe maps. Their imposing presence is emphasized by the ursa major’s sheer size, rivaling even the mightiest beings like Lord Tirek at full power, making them among the largest creatures seen in Friendship is Magic.

Physically, the ursas bear elongated tails reminiscent of the star patterns of their celestial namesakes, blending terrestrial bear anatomy with cosmic imagery. While their appearances vary—ranging from translucent, starlit forms to opaque versions in fan media and official game storylines—their essence as magical, awe-inspiring, and potentially dangerous guardians of the forest remains consistent. Their mythic undertones, combined with their interactions with main characters, underscore the series’ recurring themes of confronting fear, respecting nature, and reconciling bravado with truth.

24. #24Windigos

    Keys: Windigo, Windigos

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Windigos are spectral, horse-like entities in Equestria, characterized by their ghostly, translucent forms and lack of a lower body. They are intrinsically tied to winter and strife, manifesting as malevolent spirits that feed on hatred, conflict, and discord, and in doing so, conjure blizzards and freezing weather. Their glowing blue eyes and ethereal presence make them both ominous and otherworldly, reinforcing their role as manifestations of negative emotion rather than natural creatures.

The first introduction of windigos occurs in the season two episode Hearth’s Warming Eve, during the pageant staged by Twilight Sparkle and her friends in Canterlot. In the dramatization of the historical feud among Earth ponies, Pegasi, and unicorns, three windigos hover above the grand summit, their presence emphasizing the destructive potential of lingering animosity. They return later in the same episode when tensions escalate between Princess Platinum, Commander Hurricane, and Chancellor Puddinghead. Clover the Clever explains their nature, noting that “the more hate the spirit feels, the colder things become,” highlighting the direct link between negative emotions and their icy powers. The spirits’ threat is only neutralized through acts of unity and friendship, as the Fire of Friendship melts the ice and drives the windigos away, a narrative that underscores the show’s recurring themes of reconciliation and harmony. Even minor disagreements are hinted to summon their presence, as the Mane Six hear a windigo-like gust after a trivial argument, demonstrating that these spirits exist as ongoing metaphors for discord.

Windigos appear repeatedly across the series and associated media, often symbolizing the consequences of division among Equestria’s inhabitants. In Hearthbreakers, Applejack recounts their tale, while a Friendship Express train sells “windigo-frosted snow cones,” illustrating their permeation into Equestrian culture as both legend and playful reference. They are revisited in A Hearth’s Warming Tail, where smoke-like windigos appear during Snowfall Frost’s song and in a dystopian future conjured by the Spirit of Hearth’s Warming Yet to Come, blanketing Equestria in eternal blizzards after the erasure of Hearth’s Warming. Their most dramatic return occurs in The Ending of the End - Part 2, when Queen Chrysalis, Lord Tirek, and Cozy Glow incite conflict among the pony races, allowing windigos to resurface. Only the unification of Twilight Sparkle, her friends, the Young Six, and the Pillars of Old Equestria can dispel them, reinforcing their role as harbingers of chaos that can only be overcome through solidarity and friendship.

Windigos, therefore, function as both literal and symbolic forces within Equestria: their icy, intangible forms make them visually striking and unnerving, while their dependence on interpersonal conflict provides a narrative mechanism to explore the consequences of discord and the restorative power of unity.

25. #25Bufogren

    Keys: Bufogren, Bufogrens

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Bufogren are large, sapient, frog-like creatures in Equestria, notable for their six eyes, low resonant voices, highly sensitive ears, and notoriously rancid breath. They are depicted as both intelligent and perceptive, capable of interacting with ponies and other sentient beings, though their foul odor often complicates such interactions. In the season eight episode The End in Friend, Rainbow Dash and Rarity encounter a Bufogren while searching for the missing Amulet of Aurora. Rarity creatively mitigates the creature’s noxious breath by crafting a paste from mint leaves and a tuft of cloud, demonstrating both the Bufogren’s challenges and the ingenuity required to interact with it.

Bufogren appear elsewhere in Equestrian media, often kept in captivity due to their unusual nature. In The Last Crusade, Scootaloo’s parents, Snap Shutter and Mane Allgood, maintain a Bufogren in a cage, highlighting the species’ integration into pony households and farms as exotic or unusual animals. They are also seen inhabiting environments like the Hayseed Swamp in Growing Up is Hard to Do, where they maintain a presence in the wild, and one green Bufogren appears in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Issue #93, covering Scootaloo in its mucus. Bufogren are cataloged in reference materials like The Compendium of Equestria, indicating that they are recognized as a distinct species within the broader taxonomy of Equestrian creatures.

Overall, Bufogren combine elements of amphibian physiology with sapient intelligence, creating a creature that is both formidable and socially challenging due to its sensory sensitivity and overpowering odor. Their appearances throughout Equestria suggest a duality: they can be dangerous or inconvenient if neglected, yet with care and clever handling, they are manageable and even integrated into pony life.

26. #26Bugbear

    Keys: Bugbears, Bugbear

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Bugbears in Equestria are formidable hybrid creatures combining the upper body, limbs, and general stature of a panda bear with the wings, antennae, and stinger of a bumblebee. This unusual physiology gives them both brute strength and the capacity for aerial movement, as well as the potential for a venomous sting, making them dangerous opponents in both combat and territorial disputes. They are first introduced in the season five episode Slice of Life, where one bugbear, previously captured and imprisoned in Tartarus by Sweetie Drops—a secret agent of an anti-monster organization in Canterlot—escapes and attacks Ponyville. The Mane Six engage it, ultimately defeating it off-screen, emphasizing the threat posed by such creatures without turning the episode into a battle-focused narrative.

Bugbears appear sporadically throughout the series and related media, often in contexts that highlight both their magical nature and hybrid characteristics. Ocellus is shown briefly morphing into a bugbear in School Daze – Part 2 and Student Counsel, and Discord summons one to chase students during P.E. class in A Matter of Principals, showcasing the creature’s adaptability to magical influence and its role in scenarios combining danger and comedy. In School Raze – Part 1 and 2, a bugbear is again imprisoned in Tartarus, and Twilight leverages its natural magic to aid in their escape, temporarily separating it into its panda and bee components, demonstrating the mystical essence inherent in its biology. Bugbears are also shown in captivity by Scootaloo’s parents in The Last Crusade, suggesting that, despite their threat, they can be contained and integrated into controlled environments.

28. #28Chimera

    Keys: Chimera, Chimerae

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Chimerae in Equestria are formidable, hybrid creatures composed of multiple predatory anatomies fused into a single entity, creating a being both physically powerful and inherently unpredictable. The most notable depiction is a female chimera seen in Somepony to Watch Over Me, featuring the front body and head of a saber-toothed tiger, a goat’s hindquarters and head perched on its left shoulder, and a snake as a prehensile, venomous tail. This three-headed arrangement results in a creature with competing instincts and personalities; in the episode, the heads bicker over leadership and feeding priorities, hinting at a history of internal discord. Apple Bloom encounters the chimera in the Flame Geyser Swamp while delivering apple pies, and although initially hostile and intent on devouring her and the pies, the creature is ultimately tamed by Applejack through a combination of clever tools, music, and negotiation, illustrating that even fearsome magical beasts can respond to patience, ingenuity, and understanding of their nature.

Chimerae are referenced and appear throughout various Equestrian media, often highlighting their hybrid and magical qualities. Fluttershy mentions them in Yakity-Sax, and a chimera is imprisoned in Tartarus in School Raze – Part 1, demonstrating that these creatures can be restrained through magical or conventional means. In the sequel, School Raze – Part 2, Twilight Sparkle exploits the chimera’s intrinsic magic to aid in an escape, temporarily dividing it into its component tiger, goat, and snake, emphasizing its mystical essence and the inherent separability of its constituent parts. Other appearances include The Last Crusade, where Scootaloo recounts her father Snap Shutter being trapped in a chimera’s cave for several moons, as well as in the chapter book Princess Luna and the Festival of the Winter Moon and My Little Pony: Feats of Friendship Issue #2, underlining the chimera’s recurring role as both an obstacle and a symbol of the strange, magical fauna populating Equestria. Their combination of strength, magical adaptability, and layered consciousness marks chimerae as uniquely complex creatures within the world’s mythology.

29. #29Cipactli

    Keys: Cipactli

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Cipactli in Equestria is depicted as a massive, amphibious creature combining traits of a crocodile, a toad, and a fish, creating an imposing, semi-aquatic monster of legendary proportions. It first appears in the season six episode Stranger Than Fan Fiction, where Rainbow Dash, Quibble Pants, and Dr. Caballeron encounter it within the ancient Temple of Chicomoztoc. The creature is accidentally unleashed when Quibble Pants inadvertently triggers a series of pressure plates, setting Cipactli loose in a frenzy. Its immense size and predatory nature make it immediately threatening, yet it is ultimately restrained by Daring Do, who saves the ponies before the creature can cause serious harm. For the remainder of the episode, Cipactli is seen navigating the temple’s muddy waters, and it later appears pursuing Caballeron and his henchponies, reinforcing its relentless, dangerous temperament.

Beyond the show, Cipactli is referenced in Equestrian literature, including the chapter book Daring Do and the Marked Thief of Marapore, which mentions a Cipactli Queen, hinting at a possible hierarchy or species continuity, and in chapter 12 of The Stormy Road to Canterlot. Its hybrid physiology—crocodilian jaws, amphibian bulk, and piscine mobility—suggests it is adapted to both land and water, making it an extraordinarily versatile predator. Cipactli embodies the mythic qualities of legendary beasts within Equestria, blending awe-inspiring size, a fearsome presence, and a persistent, almost elemental drive that places it among the more formidable creatures adventurers might encounter in the world.

30. #30Cragadile, Cragadiles

    Keys: Cragadile

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Cragadiles are formidable hybrid creatures in Equestria, combining the reptilian form of a crocodile with rocky, crag-like armor covering their hides. They first appear in Princess Twilight Sparkle - Part 2, where Twilight and her friends inadvertently awaken one while crossing a bubbling creek in the Everfree Forest. Provoked, the cragadile reacts aggressively, threatening the group until they use black vines entwined throughout the forest to restrain and muzzle it. Its name, a fusion of “crocodile” and “crag,” reflects both its appearance and its tendency to inhabit rugged, rocky environments, emphasizing its strength and resilience.

Cragadiles also appear throughout Equestrian media, demonstrating their adaptability and the variety of roles they fill. In Frenemies, Queen Chrysalis briefly assumes the form of a cragadile, showcasing the creature’s imposing stature. In The Last Crusade, Scootaloo’s parents maintain a cragadile named Marshmallow, reflecting their tradition of cragadile wrangling, an activity further highlighted in My Little Pony/Transformers Issue #4 when changelings loyal to Chrysalis transform into massive cragadiles during an invasion of the Crystal Empire. They are mentioned in The Journal of the Two Sisters, The End in Friend, Good Night, Baby Flurry Heart, and appear in the My Little Pony Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook, demonstrating their widespread presence across Equestria. Their combination of natural aggression, armored hide, and occasional domestication or magical use makes cragadiles both dangerous and fascinating, blending raw power with a degree of mythic mystique that cements them as notable threats and curiosities within the world.

31. #31Hydra

    Keys: Hydra, Hydras

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Hydras in Equestria are formidable, multi-headed serpentine beasts, often depicted with a dragon-like body, two legs, and no wings or arms, while each neck supports a separate head capable of independent expression and movement. The most prominent appearance is in Feeling Pinkie Keen, where a four-headed hydra emerges from the murky depths of Froggy Bottom Bogg, emitting a pungent, noxious gas as it rises. The heads display distinct personalities, sometimes laughing at one another or reacting at different speeds, adding to the creature’s unsettling and chaotic presence. Its behavior is predatory and territorial, as it chases the main characters through the bog, demonstrating both intelligence and brute strength. Observant ponies also note small ecological details, such as a tick-like insect clinging to its neck, emphasizing its integration into the mystical ecosystem.

Hydras are tied to magical phenomena in Equestria, being drawn to specific stimuli like dragon molts, as Smolder mentions in Molt Down, highlighting their interactions with other magical creatures. They appear across various media, from promotional material like the Comic Con 2011 poster to interactive storybooks and video games such as Adventure Ponies!, often embodying the classic challenge or guardian archetype. In the comics, hydras are noted for their usefulness in potion-making and as protective or illusory constructs, appearing in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Issues 17 and 18, Friends Forever Issues 3 and 4, and Legends of Magic Issue #1. In narrative contexts, hydras can be real, illusory, or used magically, as seen when Ocellus transforms into one to combat an illusory foe in Feats of Friendship Issue #3. Their inclusion in The Stormy Road to Canterlot and the My Little Pony Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook cements their role as enduring, versatile magical beasts—both dangerous and mystical—whose multiple heads and serpentine agility make them a uniquely challenging encounter for ponies and adventurers alike.

32. #32Maulwurf

    Keys: Maulwurf

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The maulwurf is a formidable, mole-like creature in Equestria, introduced in To Change a Changeling. Despite being whimsically described by Starlight Glimmer as “half-bear, half-mole, half-raging-pile-of-claws,” it primarily resembles a giant star-nosed mole with striking blue fur, oversized forearms, and numerous light-blue appendages surrounding its snout, giving it a distinctly alien and menacing appearance. In the episode, the maulwurf poses a significant threat to the changelings, rampaging through their kingdom and consuming the plants that sustain their environment. Its resilience is remarkable: its thick, nearly impenetrable hide allows it to shrug off unicorn magic and endure physical assaults, including being struck by massive rocks, highlighting its status as a near-invincible hazard within its habitat.

The maulwurf’s presence extends beyond this episode. In School Raze - Part 1, one is shown imprisoned in Tartarus, suggesting that these creatures are either controlled or contained due to their destructive potential. Additionally, in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Issue #93, Scootaloo’s parents, Snap Shutter and Mane Allgood, are depicted observing a brown-furred maulwurf, indicating that these creatures may have natural variations in appearance. The maulwurf exemplifies the series’ blend of fantastical danger and whimsical design, functioning both as a physical threat in the narrative and as a colorful addition to Equestria’s menagerie of magical and semi-magical beasts.

33. #33Orthros

    Keys: Orthros, Orthrus

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The orthros is a rare, two-headed canine in Equestria, introduced in the episode Trade Ya!. This unusual creature features one head resembling a Saint Bernard and the other a more generic mutt, creating a striking and memorable duality. Its temperament is unpredictable: while both heads display obedience difficulties for its original owner and prospective owners, the orthros responds calmly and obediently to Fluttershy, reflecting the gentle influence she has over magical and exotic creatures. In the episode, Rainbow Dash initially trades a Discord-shaped lamp to obtain the orthros, only to subsequently exchange him to a Daring Do collector for a first-edition book, with Fluttershy temporarily relocating to Manehattan to assist in training the creature. After the trade is called off, Rainbow Dash ultimately exchanges the orthros for a bird whistle intended for Fluttershy, emphasizing the creature’s role in facilitating character interactions and story development rather than remaining a permanent companion.

Beyond the episode, the orthros appears in supplementary media, including episode 8 of Baby Flurry Heart’s Heartfelt Scrapbook, “Land of Harmony,” as well as in My Little Pony: Feats of Friendship Issue #2 on the RI cover and pages 6–7. Concept art for the creature in The Art of Equestria suggests an earlier design that included a snake tail, evoking similarities to the chimera featured in Somepony to Watch Over Me, and highlighting the series’ penchant for imaginative hybrid creatures. The orthros exemplifies the blend of whimsy and challenge that defines Equestria’s magical fauna, serving as both a narrative catalyst and a visually distinctive addition to the series’ menagerie.

34. #34Roc

    Keys: Rocs, Roc

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Rocs are colossal, carnivorous birds of prey in Equestria, notable for their immense size and predatory instincts. They are especially drawn to the scent of a dragon’s molt, a trait showcased in Molt Down, where a roc menaces Spike, Zecora, and Rarity in the Everfree Forest before being driven off by Twilight and Spike. Despite their fearsome appearance, rocs display a surprising level of intelligence and awareness: The Bestiary of Equestria notes that while they are “born of earth and masters of the air,” they are generally calm, capable of understanding pony language, though unable to speak it, and highly selective about whom they carry in their talons. They are powerful, independent, and can be both adversaries and allies, depending on circumstances, as seen in Melody of the Waves.

Rocs appear across multiple media, reflecting a variety of traits and sizes. In Frenemies, Queen Chrysalis briefly transforms into a roc, highlighting their association with strength and aerial dominance. Discord in Time features a prehistoric roc that is carnivorous, capable of intelligent speech, and even demonstrates problem-solving abilities, such as requiring assistance from Dust Devil to take flight while carrying Apple Bloom, Scootaloo, and Sweetie Belle. Other portrayals include a stranded roc in the Farasian desert (Issue #91) and a purple-feathered roc observed by Scootaloo’s parents (Issue #93), showcasing the diversity of coloration and habitats. The Curse of the Statuettes introduces a baby roc alongside his mother, the Wind Guardian, emphasizing familial bonds and protective instincts among these creatures. Collectively, rocs exemplify a majestic combination of raw power, intelligence, and an unpredictable yet often cooperative nature within Equestria’s ecosystem.

35. #35Sphinx

    Keys: Sphinxes, Sphinx

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Sphinxes in Equestria are depicted as majestic and magical creatures, often blending traits of multiple animals with an air of mystery and intellect. They commonly appear in Daring Do media as both decorative and narrative elements. For example, posters depicting a sphinx appear in Castle Sweet Castle and Stranger Than Fan Fiction, as well as in collectible media like Enterplay’s Equestrian Odysseys card game and the 2022 comics, where characters such as Felicity casually reference a sphinx as a past companion, suggesting these creatures can form bonds with ponies or adventurers.

A more fully realized sphinx appears in the episode Daring Done? within the legend of Somnambula. This version is a giant, four-legged magical being with the head of a pony, the body of a lion, and the wings of an eagle. It demonstrates both magical and intellectual prowess, capable of casting spells to prevent Pegasus flight and creating a blindfold over Somnambula’s eyes, emphasizing its control over its environment and the challenges it poses. In the legend, the sphinx menaces a desert village, claiming crops for herself, and tests the villagers’ courage and wits with riddles and physical challenges. Ultimately, Somnambula overcomes these trials, prompting the sphinx to fly away in frustration, highlighting the creature’s role as both an adversary and a test of skill. In Gameloft’s mobile game, this sphinx is characterized with a whimsical touch, described as enjoying riddles, wandering her pyramid, and menacing Southern Equestria, which underscores her enigmatic and imposing nature. Across appearances, sphinxes blend intelligence, magical capability, and a sense of majesty, often serving as guardians, challengers, or symbols of ancient lore in Equestria.

36. #36Tatzlwurm

    Keys: Tatzlwurm

    Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Tatzlwurms in Equestria are fearsome subterranean creatures, blending serpentine, worm-like bodies with predatory adaptations. They are characterized by a tripartite jaw lined with black tentacles capable of grasping prey, armored with scales, and adorned with a striking red, mane-like ridge behind their head. In Three’s A Crowd, a Tatzlwurm emerges from underground to menace ponies, displaying both brute force and a hazardous biological trait: its sneeze spreads a contagious affliction known as tatzl-flu, affecting even powerful beings like Discord. Despite their dangerous appearance, they exhibit vulnerabilities, notably to offensive unicorn and alicorn magic, which can be used to repel or incapacitate them.

Their sensory perception is finely tuned to vibrations in the ground. As Fluttershy explains in Friendship is Magic Issue #47, Tatzlwurms navigate by detecting subtle tremors, which allow them to locate prey or intruders, but they are intimidated by larger vibrations, making them avoidant in some scenarios. These creatures are not only a threat in confined encounters; they have the potential to cause larger-scale destruction, such as triggering earthquakes that collapse structures in Ponyville. Additionally, Tatzlwurms are drawn to the scent of a dragon’s molt, as Smolder mentions in Molt Down, linking them to other magical fauna and the natural cycles of Equestria. Their appearances in educational or magical contexts, like Fundamentals of Magic, further emphasize their role as both a creature of lore and a tangible hazard within the world, blending ecological and magical significance.
