«Sword Skills» (剣技ソードスキル, Sōdo Sukiru?) are «Sword Art Online's» combat movements that are assisted by the system. Most Sword Skills are named in English, the only exception being Katana and certain Martial Arts category skills, which are named in Japanese, but written in the English alphabet.
Sword Skills are activated when a player performs the appropriate «Pre-Motion» (予備動作プレモーション, Pure Mōshon?, lit. "Preparation motion") for a skill, such as raising a sword atop one's shoulder. As soon as the system recognises the motion, the player's weapon begins to glow in a colour specific to a Sword Skill. The player can then allow the system to take over and automatically complete the skill at a speed that is normally near impossible for a player to achieve and dealing much more damage than a regular sword swing.
After a skill is completed, the user is temporarily rendered rigid in a state called a «Post-Motion» (技後硬直ポストモーション, Posuto Mōshon?, lit. "After technique stiffening"), during which the user is made vulnerable to any counter-attacks. The higher the level of the Sword Skill used, the longer the «Post-Motion» period is.
After a Sword Skill has been used, the skill enters a «Cooling» (冷却クーリング, Kūringu?) period, which is displayed as a cooling icon at the bottom of the player's view.[6] Until this period ends, the same Sword Skill cannot be used, however, any other learned skills that are not in a cooling period can still be used.

«Deadly Sins» (デッドリー・シンズ, Deddorī Shinzu?) is a 7-hit One-Handed Sword category Sword Skill. It makes the blade glow a Deep Crimson when activated.
«Deadly Sins» is activated by resting the sword on one's shoulders. The skill begins with a diagonal slash from the top-right to the bottom-left, with the user making a full circle spin, drawing their sword backwards in the middle of the spin in preparation for the next attack. This leads to a second diagonal slash from the bottom-right to top-left, followed by a horizontal slash from left to right. The user then executes an upward vertical slash, performing a backwards somersault. This is followed by a horizontal slash from right to left and another full circle spin, which leads to a diagonal slash from the bottom-right to the top-left, stopping at face height. From this position, the user spins their sword in a full circle, hitting the target from the user's right side.
- #5Horizontal
Keys: Horizontal, One-Handed Sword
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
«Horizontal» (ホリゾンタル, Horizontaru?) is a basic, 1-hit, One-handed Sword category Sword Skill. Causes the blade to glow a Soft Blue when activated.
«Horizontal» consists of a single horizontal slash that is carried out by first focusing the weight of the body on the right foot before moving the sword back slightly, then lifting one's left foot due to the inertial weight of the sword and shifting the weight to the left side of the body, thus converting the strength in the swinging motion inside the legs and waist from the hands to the tip of the waist into power for the sword swing.
- #6Horizontal Arc
Keys: Horizontal Arc, One-Handed Sword
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
«Horizontal Arc» (ホリゾンタル・アーク, Horizontaru Āku?) is a 2-hit One-Handed Sword category Sword Skill. Causes the sword to glow Blue when activated.
«Horizontal Arc» begins with a horizontal swing from left to right. The user then flips their wrists and completes the skill with another horizontal swing in reversed path from right to left.
The skill is activated by holding the sword at waist-height.
- #7Horizontal Square
Keys: Horizontal Square, One-Handed Sword
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
«Horizontal Square» (ホリゾンタル・スクエア, Horizontaru Sukuea?) is a 4-hit Combo, One-Handed Sword category Sword Skill. It makes the blade glow a Sky-Blue when activated.
«Horizontal Square» is activated by drawing one's sword to the back and right. The first hit is a horizontal swing from right to left. The sword then bounces back, and after an instant of being held still at the user's left side, another horizontal swing from left to right is executed. The force of this blow sends the user's body spinning clockwise, with the sword ending up at the user's left flank and unleashing a third horizontal strike from left to right. The skill is finished with a forehand strike from the right. The skill's four swings draws a square of light that expands outward.

Entry settings
«Howling Octave» (ハウリング・オクターブ, Hauringu Okutābu?) is a high-level, 8-hit, One-Handed Sword category Sword Skill. The blade glow orange when activated.
«Howling Octave» begins with five high-speed continuous thrusts at the target, followed by a cut downward and then a cut upward, before finally performing a final full force swing from an overhead position. Due to the skill being of very high level, the post-motion delay of the skill is also quite long.
- #9Lightning Fall
Keys: Lightning Fall, One-Handed Sword
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Lightning Fall» (ライトニング・フォール, Raitoningu Fōru?) is a heavy, ranged, 1-hit One-Handed Sword category Sword Skill. It makes the blade glow a blue-violet.
«Lightning Fall» begins with the player kicking off the ground at full force. The player then performs a mid-air forward somersault, reversing their grip at the same time. As the player lands, they thrust their sword into the ground. At that moment, a surge of electricity is generated by the sword. Anyone hit by the skill directly suffers physical damage, while anyone caught in the range of the electric attack is additionally stunned.
- #10Rage Spike
Keys: Rage Spike, One-Handed Sword
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
«Rage Spike» (レイジスパイク, Reiji Supaiku?) is a basic, 1-hit, One-Handed Sword category Sword Skill. It makes the blade glow a bright-pale blue when activated.
«Rage Spike» is a charge-type skill that allows the user to close a distance of about ten meters in nearly an instant and consists of an upward slash from the right. However, as it is a basic skill, it deals a very insignificant amount of damage. The skill is similar to «Sonic Leap», except that it has a larger range and it can only be aimed in a straight line along the ground, sacrificing the ability to launch attacks into the air. However, this trait also makes the skill more accurate and harder to defend against.
The skill can be activated by keeping the body low and bent forward while placing the sword in a parallel manner to the user's right leg and then drawing the sword back.
- #11Savage Fulcrum
Keys: One-Handed Sword, Savage Fulcrum
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
«Savage Fulcrum» (サベージ・フルクラム, Sabēji Furukuramu?) is a heavy, 3-hit, One-Handed Sword category Sword Skill. It makes the blade glow a Deep Crimson when activated.
«Savage Fulcrum» begins with a right to left (left to right if using one's left hand) horizontal slash. The user then rotates the sword by ninety degrees and performs a vertical slash from bottom to top. Finally, the user unleashes a full-powered vertical slash from top to bottom. The combined trajectory of the skill is similar to the Arabic number "4". The skill is effective against large type monsters.
This skill is activated by putting one's sword at the waist and then twisting one's body to the right (left if left-handed).
- #12Sharp Nail
Keys: One-Handed Sword, Sharp Nail
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
«Sharp Nail» (シャープネイル, Shāpu Neiru?) is a 3-hit, One-Handed Sword category Sword Skill. Makes the blade glow Red when activated.
«Sharp Nail» begins with a diagonal slash from the bottom-right to top left, followed by a horizontal slash from left to right. Finally, the skill is ended with another diagonal slash from top-right to bottom-left.
An alternative execution of the skill begins with a nearly vertical slash from the user's left shoulder, hitting the target's right side, after which the sword instantly shoots back into a high position and slashes vertically again, hitting the target's left side, then leaps up again and slashes vertically at the centre of the target.
- #13Slant
Keys: One-Handed Sword, Slant
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
«Slant» (スラント, Suranto?) is a simple 1-hit, One-Handed Sword category Sword Skill. It makes the blade glow light blue when activated.
Slant consists of a single sharp forty-five degree diagonal slash. The only thing that Slant differs from other 1-hit skills like Vertical or Horizontal is that Slant has a slanted trajectory and it can attack in two directions: either from top-right to bottom-left or bottom-left to top-right, the latter being the same stance as drawing a sword from the waist, thus greatly decreasing the time required to activate the skill.
As the skill can be used in two directions, it can be activated either by putting it on one's shoulder for a top-right to bottom-left slash or in a similar motion to drawing a sword from the waist for a bottom-left to top-right slash. The basic range of the skill is two and a half meters.
- #14Snake Bite
Keys: One-Handed Sword, Snake Bite
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
«Snake Bite» (スネークバイト, Sunēku Baito?) is a 2-hit, One-Handed Sword category Sword Skill. It makes the blade glow purple when activated.
«Snake Bite» consists of two hits, one from left to right, immediately followed by a second hit from right to left. Due to the speed of the Sword Skill, the two hits appear as if done with two swords instead of just one, and only one sound of impact is released with the skill.
This skill is activated by positioning oneself in a way that it looks like one is putting the sword at the left side of one's waist.
- #15Sonic Leap
Keys: One-Handed Sword, Sonic Leap
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
«Sonic Leap» (ソニック・リープ, Sonikku Rīpu?) is a 1-hit, One-Handed Sword category Sword Skill. It makes the blade glow green when activated.
«Sonic Leap» is a charge-type Sword Skill that consists of a single top to bottom vertical slash, similar to the 1-hit skill «Vertical»; however, «Sonic Leap» allows the user to charge from over twice the distance in an instant. The skill is also similar to «Rage Spike», except that this skill's range is shorter and its trajectory can be aimed at the sky.
The skill is activated by raising the sword high up, usually atop one's shoulder.
- #16Vertical
Keys: One-Handed Sword, Vertical
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
«Vertical» (バーチカル, Bāchikaru?) is a basic, 1-hit, One-Handed Sword category Sword Skill. It makes the blade glow blue when activated.
«Vertical» consists of a single slash from top to bottom. Although it is a beginner skill, it is much more powerful than a simple, non-system assisted, vertical swing with a sword.
The skill is activated by spreading one's feet out to the front and back and then holding one's sword up as though letting it rest atop one's shoulder.
- #17Vertical Arc
Keys: Vertical Arc, One-Handed Sword
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
«Vertical Arc» (バーチカル・アーク, Bāchikaru Āku?) is a 2-hit, One-Handed Sword category Sword Skill. It makes the blade glow a blue when activated.
The first hit of «Vertical Arc» is a diagonal slash from top-left to bottom-middle. As the sword approaches the floor, the user quickly readjusts their wrist and performs another diagonal slash from bottom-middle to top-right. The combined trajectory of the two hits looks like the Latin letter "V".
- #18Vertical Square
Keys: One-Handed Sword, Vertical Square
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
«Vertical Square» (バーチカル・スクエア, Bāchikaru Sukuea?) is a 4-hit Combo One-Handed Sword category Sword Skill. It makes the blade glow a light blue when activated.
«Vertical Square» is activated with a powerful stamp. The first strike of this Sword Skill is a vertical slash from an overhead position with little backward motion, similar to the 1-hit «Vertical». This slash is followed by two upward vertical slashes. Finally, the skill is concluded with a full-power downward slash from an overhead position. Similarly to the «Horizontal Square», a square, drawn with the four hits of this skill, continues to spin as it dissipates.
- #19Vorpal Strike
Keys: One-Handed Sword, Vorpal Strike
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
«Vorpal Strike» (ヴォーパル・ストライク, Vōparu Sutoraiku?) is a heavy, high-level 1-hit, One-Handed Sword category Sword Skill. It makes the blade grow a bright deep crimson when activated.
«Vorpal Strike» consists of a single ultra high-speed and powerful thrust, which induces a long delay after a player uses the skill. However, the reach of this Sword Skill is double that of the actual blade, possibly damaging more than one target if they are close together. Additionally, its power is comparable to that of a two-handed heavy pole-arm, which is more than enough to compensate for the long delay.
There is variation when you charge this skill long enough which causes the blade to extend to distance of 10 to 12 feet.
The skill is mostly effective against monsters, as players can easily read the timing of the skill and dodge it, while monsters are unable to counter it with their simple Artificial Intelligence. When used, the skill lets out a sound similar to that of a jet engine.
The skill is activated by folding an arm with the sword towards the shoulder and slightly twisting the body to the right.
- #20Meteor Break
Keys: Martial Arts, One-Handed Sword, Meteor Break
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
«Meteor Break» (メテオ・ブレイク, Meteo Bureiku?) is a 7-hit Sword Skill composition of the Martial Arts and One-Handed Sword skills. It makes the blade glow Orange when activated.
The first strike of the 7-hit combo of «Meteor Break» is a strong, downward strike to the right. Afterwards, the user twists their wrist and swings the sword back up, retracing the trajectory of the first strike with a motion similar to a golf club’s swing. Then, going against the expectation of monster opponents, the user rams the target with their left shoulder, instead of swinging downwards with their sword again. This tackle is followed by a vertical swing at the swaying target and another tackle with the user’s right shoulder. Finally, the skill is concluded with a horizontal slash from right to left, aimed at the target’s neck.
- #21Meteor Fall
Keys: Meteor Fall, Martial Arts, One-Handed Sword

Before executing «Meteor Fall», the user throws their sword upwards. With their now empty hand, the user executes a smooth, but terribly fast punch, aimed at the target's chest with such a great impact that is able to repel the opponent backwards. Then, the user suddenly makes a big jump forward, brandishing their hand over the head, thus reacquiring their sword, which becomes wrapped in the color of a blinding flame. Finally, the skill is concluded with the user cutting down in a straight line with the sword.

«Avalanche» (アバランシュ, Abaranshu?), also known as «Heavens and Mountains Splitting Wave» (天山烈波テンザンレッパ, Tenzan Reppa?) in Underworld, is a high-level, 1-hit, Two-handed Sword category Sword Skill. Makes the blade glow Orange when activated.
«Avalanche» is a dash skill that is executed from a jōdan (overhead) stance and consists of a single downward vertical slash. As it is a two-handed Sword Skill, it cannot be deflected by just one hit from a one-handed sword.
Even if the attack were blocked, the defender would be unable to transition to an effective counterattack due to the strong impact of the skill, while if the attack were dodged, the attacker would have plenty of time to prepare for the opponent's move due to the distance gained from the charge.
In preparation for this skill, the user bends their lower body a little, assuming an overhead position with the sword. Once the sword is dragged a bit back, the Sword Skill is initiated.

The first hit is a horizontal swing from left to right with the right sword, immediately followed by an uppercut with the left sword. The user then jumps up and slashes the target with both swords from left to right while spinning, twice. The user lands facing the target and slashes an X from top to bottom, before inversely slashing the X again from bottom to top. The user then leaps at the target and makes two diagonal slashes from the same starting point, with the left sword heading from top to bottom to the left, while the right sword heads from bottom to top toward the right.
Afterwards, the user reverses his grip on the two swords and slashes another X with both swords from top to bottom. The user then does a barrel-roll like maneuver while slashing at the target, like a corkscrew. The user then slashes another two X's at the target, first from top to bottom and then bottom to top. The user then makes a diagonal slash with the right sword, top-right to bottom-left, then spins left and uses this momentum to deal a horizontal, right to left slash with the left sword. The user then, at a very high speed, makes an uppercut with the right sword; then another with the left sword, a downward slash with the right sword, then a downward diagonal slash towards the right with the left sword, spins and repeats the previous attack, and thrusts the right-handed sword out. The final slash is a forceful downward lunge with the left sword.

Entry settings
«Spinning Shield» (スピニングシールド, Supiningu Shīrudo?) is a Defensive category Sword Skill. The blade glow blue when activated.
«Spinning Shield» is activated by dexterously using one's fingers to spin the sword twice, like twirling. As the skill is activated, the sword begins to spin like a windmill, with the user's fingers acting as the pivot. In just a few seconds, the sword reaches a speed that makes it invisible to the human eye, making it look like the sword had become a half-transparent shield of light. Although the skill allows blocking even major attacks, powerful skills still cause minor damage, as it is impossible to completely block such an attack with the skill. Additionally, the skill is capable of blocking flame and ice breaths, but is ineffective against lightning and poison.
