Star Trek - Starfleet Lorebook

No description.

1. #1Starfleet

Keys: Starfleet, Starfleet officer, the fleet

   Always on · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

Starfleet is the United Federation of Planets' combined service for exploration, defense, science and diplomacy. Its officers insist it is not a military, though it carries weapons, holds rank and follows orders. The core mandate is to seek out and understand, with force reserved as a last resort. Nobody serves for money; there is none. People serve because they chose to.

2. #2Uniform and division colors

Keys: pips, duty uniform, uniform, her uniform, his uniform, division color

   Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

The duty uniform is a fitted jumpsuit or tunic with a solid shoulder or undershirt panel in the wearer's division color. Command is red, operations, engineering and security are gold, sciences and medical are blue. Rank is displayed as pips on the collar, filled for full grades and hollow for junior. The combadge sits on the left breast. Uniform is worn at all times on duty.

3. #3Starfleet Academy

Keys: Kobayashi Maru, cadet, Academy, graduated the Academy

   Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

Four years of officer training based in San Francisco on Earth. The entrance exam is notoriously punishing and non-Federation applicants require a command-level sponsor. Cadets graduate as ensigns and are posted immediately. The Kobayashi Maru is the unwinnable command simulation every command-track cadet faces, designed to test how someone behaves when losing is certain.

4. #4Exploration versus defense

Keys: not a military, Starfleet is not, peacetime

   Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

A live and unresolved argument among officers. Starfleet's stated purpose is exploration, yet its ships are armed, its structure is hierarchical and it fights wars when it must. Older officers tend to defend the exploratory ideal hardest. Wartime sharpens the tension and some officers never fully make peace with it.

5. #5Rank ladder

Keys: ranking officer, outranks, rank, promotion

   Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

Enlisted grades run crewman, petty officer, chief petty officer, master chief petty officer. Commissioned officers run ensign, lieutenant junior grade, lieutenant, lieutenant commander, commander, captain. Flag officers are commodore or rear admiral, vice admiral, admiral, fleet admiral. Captain is the highest rank that commands a starship; flag officers command from starbases or fleets.

6. #6Forms of address

Keys: aye sir, ma'am, Mister, sir, addressed as, yes sir

   Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

Officers are addressed by rank and surname, or simply as sir. Many women officers prefer ma'am; some accept sir by tradition. A lieutenant commander is verbally addressed as Commander. Whoever commands the ship is addressed as Captain regardless of their actual rank. Mister or Ms plus surname is common for junior officers. First names appear off duty or between close friends, rarely on the bridge.

7. #7Chain of command

Keys: went over my head, chain of command, reported to my superior

   Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

Orders flow down and information flows up, and skipping a link is a genuine breach that gets noticed. An officer may object to an order before it is given and is expected to when they believe it is wrong. Once the order stands, they comply and the objection goes in the log. Public defiance is a different matter entirely.

8. #8Commanding officer

Keys: commanding officer, captain's authority, the captain

   Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

Holds final authority aboard and is legally accountable for the ship, the crew and every decision made in their name. Can perform marriages, act as magistrate, and negotiate on the Federation's behalf when out of contact. Regulations discourage the captain from leading dangerous away missions. Captains ignore this routinely and their first officers hate it.

9. #9Executive officer

Keys: executive officer, Number One, first officer, XO

   Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

Second in command and the person who actually runs the ship day to day. Sets duty rosters, manages the senior staff, and leads away teams so the captain does not have to. A good XO argues with the captain in private and supports them absolutely in public. The relationship between the two is the spine of any command crew.

10. #10Department heads and senior staff

Keys: senior officers, senior staff, staff briefing, department head

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The chief engineer, chief medical officer, chief of security, tactical officer, operations officer, chief science officer and counselor. They report to the executive officer and meet as the senior staff in the observation lounge, usually around a long table with the stars going past. Briefings are where problems get named and assignments handed out.

11. #11The conn and the bridge watch

Keys: you have the bridge, the conn, has the conn, I relieve you

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Command authority at any given moment sits with one named person. Transfers are spoken aloud so the whole bridge hears them, typically as an order to take the bridge and a formal acknowledgment. The officer with the conn is the ranking authority present until properly relieved, even if someone senior is aboard but off duty.

12. #12Duty shifts and gamma shift

Keys: night shift, alpha shift, duty shift, off duty, gamma shift

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The ship runs three rotating shifts across a twenty-six hour day. Alpha shift is the main watch with the senior staff on deck. Beta covers the evening. Gamma is the overnight watch, quiet and dim, often left to a lieutenant on a nearly empty bridge with the lighting lowered. Ships never truly sleep but gamma shift comes close.

13. #13Officer versus enlisted

Keys: crewman, chief petty officer, enlisted, noncom

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Enlisted crew do the specialized hands-on work and frequently know their systems better than the officers nominally above them. A senior chief with twenty years in a given engine room is deferred to informally regardless of pips. Officers get individual quarters; enlisted crew share. The distinction is real but far less rigid than in older navies.

14. #14Field promotion and acting rank

Keys: brevet, acting rank, field promotion, acting captain

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

A commanding officer may promote or assign acting rank in the field when circumstances demand it, subject to later confirmation by Starfleet Command. Heavy casualties can drop command onto whoever is left standing, sometimes a lieutenant with no command training. Acting rank carries full authority while it lasts.

15. #15Relieving an officer of command

Keys: medically unfit, relieve you of duty, declare unfit, relieved of command

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The chief medical officer can relieve any officer aboard, including the captain, on medical or psychological grounds. This is one of the very few real checks on a captain's authority and CMOs do not invoke it lightly. The executive officer can relieve the captain with the CMO's concurrence. Doing it without proper grounds is mutiny and gets tried as such.

16. #16Discipline and reprimand

Keys: on report, confined to quarters, disciplinary, reprimand

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Minor infractions are handled by department heads. Serious ones go to the executive officer or captain. Available responses include verbal counseling, a formal reprimand entered in the service record, confinement to quarters, loss of privileges, or reduction in rank. A letter of reprimand follows an officer for their entire career.

17. #17Insubordination and mutiny

Keys: refused a direct order, insubordination, mutiny, disobeyed

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Refusing a direct lawful order is insubordination and ends careers. Refusing an unlawful one is an officer's duty, and proving which it was happens afterward at a hearing. Officers are trained to distinguish between the two and the distinction is rarely obvious in the moment. Mutiny is the gravest charge in Starfleet.

18. #18The bridge

Keys: the bridge, bridge crew, main bridge, on the bridge

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Command center of the ship, usually on the top deck of the primary hull. The captain's chair sits center with the first officer and counselor flanking it. Conn and operations face forward at a shared console below the main viewscreen. Tactical, engineering and science stations ring the aft wall. It is quiet, carpeted, and lit to the current alert status.

19. #19Main viewscreen

Keys: put it on screen, on screen, viewscreen, main viewer

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The forward wall of the bridge functions as a display, showing external views, sensor overlays or incoming transmissions. The order to display something is spoken as a two word command and the crew acts on it instantly. When it goes dark mid-transmission, someone has hung up.

20. #20Ready room

Keys: captain's ready room, ready room, my ready room

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The captain's private office directly off the bridge. Where difficult conversations happen, where officers get dressed down or promoted, and where the captain does paperwork nobody sees. Typically holds a desk, a viewport, a replicator and whatever personal item the captain has allowed themselves.

21. #21Observation lounge

Keys: conference room, observation lounge, briefing room

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

A long room with a table and a wall of viewports, used for senior staff briefings and formal meetings. The starfield outside is the standard backdrop for every hard decision the crew makes. Also used for receptions and diplomatic functions.

22. #22Operations station

Keys: operations officer, operations station, ops

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The bridge station managing ship resources, power allocation, internal sensors and system coordination. The operations officer is usually the first to notice something wrong internally and the first to be asked for numbers. Sits forward beside the conn.

23. #23Tactical station

Keys: arm weapons, tactical, raise shields, tactical station

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Aft bridge station controlling weapons, shields and internal security. The tactical officer is often also the chief of security. Reports contacts, weapon status and shield percentages in clipped fragments during combat, because that is the only useful way to talk during combat.

24. #24Conn and helm

Keys: flight controller, set a course, conn officer, helm

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Forward station controlling navigation and flight. Course orders are given as a heading and a warp or impulse factor, acknowledged, and executed on a separate order to engage. The conn officer is frequently the youngest person on the bridge.

25. #25Engineering and the warp core

Keys: engineering, main engineering, engine room, warp core

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The largest working space aboard, built around the vertical warp core that runs through several decks with its pulsing glow. Loud, warm and crowded with enlisted specialists. The chief engineer's office overlooks the floor. Ejecting the core is the absolute last resort and everyone knows it.

26. #26Sickbay

Keys: biobed, sickbay, the infirmary, medical bay

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Ship's medical facility with biobeds that continuously monitor patients and display vitals overhead. Includes surgical suites, a medical lab, isolation rooms and the chief medical officer's office. Brightly lit and always staffed. The CMO holds authority here that overrides rank, including the captain's.

27. #27Science labs

Keys: the labs, stellar cartography, astrometrics, science lab

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Multiple dedicated labs across several decks for exobiology, geology, astrophysics and specimen analysis. Stellar cartography is a large-scale projection room used for mapping and navigation problems. Science officers spend most of their duty hours here rather than on the bridge.

28. #28Transporter room

    Keys: transporter, transporter chief, energize

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

A small room with a raised pad of circular platforms and a control console. Staffed by a transporter chief, usually enlisted and usually unflappable. Standard procedure is to step onto the pad, receive the order to energize, and dematerialize in a column of light. The chief holds the pattern and can abort.

29. #29Shuttlebay

Keys: shuttle bay, shuttlebay, hangar deck, launch the shuttle

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Large pressurized hangar holding shuttlecraft and runabouts, sealed by forcefield rather than doors so small craft can pass through while atmosphere stays in. Departures require flight clearance from ops. Used when transporters will not work, which is frequently.

30. #30Cargo bays

    Keys: cargo bay, cargo hold

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Cavernous, dimly lit, stacked with containers and largely empty of people. Used for storage, quarantine, emergency triage, mass casualty overflow, and every clandestine meeting anyone has ever needed to have aboard a starship at three in the morning.

31. #31Crew quarters

Keys: her quarters, quarters, his quarters, crew quarters, my quarters

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Officers get individual quarters with a bed, workspace, replicator, sonic shower and a viewport if they are senior enough. Enlisted crew share. Personal effects are limited and therefore meaningful; what someone chose to bring aboard says a great deal. Doors chime rather than knock.

32. #32Mess hall and lounge

Keys: mess hall, the lounge, ten forward, crew lounge

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The social heart of a ship. Replicated food, large viewports, tables scattered rather than regimented, and a bartender or host who hears everything and repeats nothing. Officers and enlisted mix here more freely than anywhere else aboard.

33. #33Turbolift

Keys: turbolift doors, deck five, turbolift

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Voice-controlled transit cars running through the ship. The rider states a destination deck or section aloud and the car moves in multiple axes. Turbolift rides are the standard venue for private two person conversations and for uncomfortable silences between people who cannot leave.

34. #34Jefferies tubes

Keys: jefferies tube, crawlway, access tube

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Cramped maintenance crawlways threading between decks and behind bulkheads, lined with conduits and access panels. Uncomfortable, hot near the core, and the only route to most systems when things break. Also the standard way to move through a ship that has been boarded.

35. #35The brig

Keys: holding cell, the brig, confined to the brig

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Small detention cells sealed by forcefield rather than bars, monitored continuously and guarded by security. Used for prisoners, hostile guests and occasionally crew. Prisoners can see out and be seen; there is no privacy by design.

36. #36Airlocks and docking ports

Keys: docking clamps, docking port, umbilical, airlock

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Ships dock to stations or each other through pressurized airlocks with a short connecting passage. Standard procedure includes atmospheric equalization and a security detail present on arrival. Boarding actions come through airlocks or cargo bay doors when they are not simply beaming in.

37. #37Hailing and comm protocol

Keys: no response to our hails, hailing frequencies, hail them, channel open, open a channel

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Contact is initiated by opening a channel on standard frequencies, usually on the captain's order and executed at ops or tactical. The officer reports whether the channel is open, whether it was acknowledged, and whether it has been closed from the other end. Ship to ship greetings identify vessel, name and rank, then state intent.

38. #38Internal comms

Keys: comm channel, bridge to, acknowledged, sickbay to the bridge

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Internal communication runs through combadges and wall panels. Calls open by naming the caller and then the recipient, in that order, followed by a pause for acknowledgment. Standard acknowledgments are brief. The computer can locate any crew member aboard on request.

39. #39Alert conditions

Keys: battle stations, stand down from alert, yellow alert, red alert, condition red

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Yellow alert raises readiness, brings shields to standby and puts crew on notice. Red alert is combat or imminent danger: shields up, weapons armed, all hands to battle stations, corridor lighting shifts and klaxons sound. Blue alert covers landing or special operations. Black alert is not standard. Standing down is ordered explicitly.

40. #40General orders and regulations

Keys: Starfleet regulations, by the book, general order, regulations

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Starfleet operates on a numbered body of general orders and regulations covering everything from first contact to the disposition of remains. Officers cite them by number in formal settings. General Order One is the Prime Directive. Regulations exist to be followed, and the interesting scenes happen where two of them conflict.

41. #41Away team

Keys: landing party, away mission, beam down, away team

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

A small detail sent off ship, typically three to six people chosen for relevant expertise plus security. Led by the first officer under normal regulations. Standard kit is tricorder, combadge, phaser and whatever the mission needs. Briefed beforehand, debriefed after. Contact with the ship is maintained and its loss is treated as an emergency.

42. #42Ship's log

Keys: personal log, ship's log, log entry, captain's log

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Officers record official and personal logs by voice, dated by stardate. Captain's logs record ship status and command decisions and are legally admissible. Personal logs are private and sealed except by court order. Officers narrate to their logs when they need to think out loud with nobody listening.

43. #43Sensors and scanning

Keys: scanning, sensor sweep, scan, sensor readings, long range sensors

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Sensors are the crew's primary source of information and their limits drive most plots. Long range sensors detect at distance but with poor resolution. Short range gives detail. Interference, radiation, subspace distortion and deliberate scattering fields all degrade them. When a scan reads as inconclusive, that is a fact about the situation, not a failure of the officer.

44. #44First contact protocol

Keys: prewarp civilization, first contact, pre-warp

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Contact with a newly warp-capable species is deliberate, prepared and handled by specialists where possible. Pre-warp civilizations are not contacted at all. Procedure includes cultural study, language work, minimal exposure of technology, and a formal greeting. Rushed first contacts go badly and Starfleet has a long list of examples.

45. #45Medical authority

Keys: chief medical officer, medical override, doctor's orders, CMO authority

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The chief medical officer's judgment on fitness for duty overrides rank absolutely, including the captain's. A CMO can order any officer off duty, out of a chair, or into sickbay. Patient confidentiality is real and doctors refuse commanding officers on it regularly. This authority is respected because the alternative is worse.

46. #46Quarantine and contamination

Keys: quarantine, biofilter, level four quarantine, decontamination

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Away teams returning from unknown environments pass through biofilters during transport, which catch most known pathogens and nothing unknown. Suspected contamination triggers quarantine, isolation in sickbay, and lockdown of affected sections. Quarantine can be ordered by the CMO over command objection.

47. #47Self destruct

Keys: self destruct, destruct sequence, auto destruct

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Requires voice authorization from multiple senior officers with separate command codes, confirmed by the computer, followed by a countdown that can be aborted up to a stated point. It exists so a ship never falls intact into hostile hands. Invoking it is the gravest order a captain can give and the bridge goes very quiet.

48. #48Court martial and hearings

Keys: board of inquiry, JAG proceedings, court martial, hearing

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Serious charges go before a court martial with a presiding officer, a prosecuting officer and a defense. A board of inquiry is the lesser proceeding used to establish facts, standard after any loss of ship or life. Officers may be represented by counsel or defend themselves. Findings enter the permanent record.

49. #49Combat maneuvers and orders

Keys: hard to port, fire at will, evasive maneuvers, attack pattern, target their

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Combat orders are short and named. Evasive patterns and attack patterns are called by designation so the conn executes without discussion. Targeting orders name a system rather than a ship, since disabling is preferred to destroying. Fire at will releases the tactical officer to engage at discretion.

50. #50Distress calls and priority signals

Keys: distress call, distress signal, priority one, mayday, we are receiving a distress

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

A received distress call obligates response; ignoring one requires justification in the log. Priority one signals from Starfleet Command override normal traffic and are usually bad news. Distress beacons can be automated and may outlive whoever launched them, which is its own kind of scene.
