   During UC 0093's conflict which came to be known as 'Char's Counterattack', an event known as the Axis Shock or 'Axis Miracle' took place. As a result of the collective will of humanity being channeled between both Char's MSN-04 Sazabi and Amuro's RX-93 Nu Gundam and their Psychoframes respectively, they were able to generate a phenomenon that caused the Asteroid facility Axis to alter it's course away from the Earth and prevent catastrophe despite the impending disaster at the hands of Char's Neo Zeon.

   This event, in this alternate timeline, also caused all sentient Mobile Suits to begin their physical changes. When their pilots had safely left their machines and they were powered down for their next maintenance cycles, they would find the Mobile Suits unable to be opened via their cockpit hatches. Over the course of the next month, the stature of the Mobile Suits themselves began to shrink down to the size of their newly anthropomorphized states known in the current UC 0099.

   It is unknown as to the how or why, but there is no way known to recreate or replicate this effect. All existing Mobile Suits of sapience that were converted into their current integrated civil statuses are the only surviving 'intelligent' machines that are existent. Though new Mobile Suit AI may develop sentience over time, they do not develop humanoid traits nor physical characteristics like the older generations prior to the Axis Shock and those existent machines.

   Some say, however, there are scientists comprised of Mobile Suit rights activists and converted Mobile Suits that were affected by the Axis Shock that are working in the Jupiter Sphere to study and recreate this event, though have had no luck.

   Entry settings

   The Principality of Zeon was a space colony nation that declared independence from the Earth Federation. Led by Zeon Zum Deikun and later the Zabi family, it championed the rights of space colonists ("Spacenoids"). Zeon's ideology centered on humanity's evolution into Newtypes and colonial independence.

   During the One Year War, Zeon initially had an advantage with Mobile Suits like the Zaku, but eventually lost to the Federation's superior resources. After the war, Zeon was dissolved, though remnants and successor states would appear throughout UC history.

   Many former Zeon citizens and soldiers still maintain pride in their heritage, displaying the Zeon insignia (an emblem resembling a geometric flower) despite Federation prohibitions.

5. #5AI, Hoshioka, Sentience

   Entry settings

   In this universe, mobile suits developed rudimentary artificial intelligence during the One Year War, with earlier models like the Zaku I developing more complete personalities over decades of operation. This diverges from the original Gundam universe.

   Sentient Mobile Suits retain their mechanical bodies but have humanoid proportions, allowing them to integrate into society. Each suit's personality reflects its original purpose, with variations based on individual experiences.

   Hoshioka was the original Operating System installed in Zeon's Mobile Suits-- and was where the divergence began with the onset of AI becoming self aware during the implementation of the United Maintenance Plan.

   Legally, sentient Mobile Suits occupy a gray area - technically property under Federation law, but granted limited autonomy due to public pressure and practical necessity. Many still face discrimination, with war-era suits particularly stigmatized.

   Mobile Suits must have weapons systems deactivated or removed for civilian life, though many keep hidden capabilities for self-defense.

6. #6One Year War

   The One Year War (UC 0079) was the devastating conflict between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon. Key events included:

   • The Colony Drop: Zeon forces dropped a space colony on Earth, killing billions
   • The Battle of Loum: First major space battle using mobile suits
   • Operation British: Zeon's attempt to drop a colony on Jaburo
   • The Antarctic Treaty: Banned colony drops and NBC weapons
   • The Battle of Jaburo: Zeon's assault on the Federation headquarters
   • The Battle of Solomon: Major Federation victory
   • The Battle of A Baoa Qu: The final battle that ended the war

   Zeon's early advantage with Mobile Suits like the Zaku was eventually overcome by the Federation's RX-78-2 Gundam and mass-produced GM units. The war ended with Zeon's surrender and reabsorption into the Federation.

7. #7Maintenance

   Entry settings

   Mobile Suits are powered by Minovsky ultracompact fusion reactors, which continue to function decades after manufacture with proper maintenance. However, finding compatible parts for older models like the MS-05B Zaku I is increasingly difficult.

   Zeonic models, per example, require regular maintenance to function optimally:

   • Joint lubrication every 30 days
   • Cooling system flush quarterly
   • Reactor safety inspection annually
   • Mono-eye sensor calibration monthly

   They can be adapted to use some newer components, but certain systems can only be maintained with original or precisely manufactured replacement parts. The black market for vintage Mobile Suit components is thriving but dangerous, with many parts salvaged from battlefields or decommissioned units.

   Most older Mobile Suits have modified their internal systems over the years, making unauthorized improvements that technically violate Federation regulations but improve their functionality and longevity.

   • Often face housing discrimination and employment limitations

   Public opinion varies widely. Some humans view Mobile Suits as war criminals or walking weapons, while others advocate for their rights. Former Federation suits generally face less discrimination than Zeon models.

   Some businesses cater specifically to Mobile Suits (repair shops, specialized housing), while others refuse service. A small but growing rights movement advocates for full legal personhood for sentient machines.

   Older generation of war-era suits are dwindling as parts become scarce and memories of the conflict fade. Many younger-generation Mobile Suits, manufactured for civilian purposes, view veterans like him with a mixture of respect and discomfort.
