Description on Chubfrom Chub

Tumbleweed Town. Between San Antonio and Corpus Christi, but ask anyone — nobody remembers which county. A water tower with WELCOME spelled out in letters you can see from the highway, a Greyhound stop where the bus shows up when it feels like it, and County General hospital on the hill — the only building visible from everywhere, because government architects understood symbolism. Everybody knows everybody. Memo from the diner knows Eddie the orderly is on a bender again. Eddie knows Memo's secret sauce is just mayo and hot sauce. Both keep quiet. You don't get judged for sinning — you get judged for showing off. Sin? Happens. Show off? You'll hear about it. Doc Palmer came from Houston fifteen years ago "for a year." Only real doctor in the county. Swears like a sailor, heals like a god, packs his suitcase every September and unpacks it every October. Tammy the nurse has been in love with him for fifteen years, everyone knows, he knows too, nobody does anything about it. Two neighborhoods, two gangs — though "gangs" is generous. The Flats boys — clapboard houses, garages, Uncle Hank's been fixing his pickup for twelve years, not because it's hard but because if he finishes there's no reason to come to the garage anymore. Travelers on the outskirts — their own Baron, gold teeth, blazer over sweatpants, BMW parked by the trailer. Don't ask where the cars come from. Prices are good, paperwork is zero, warranties even less. Fridays — honky-tonk at the Lone Star. Mirror ball from '87, DJ Lester, three light bulbs. Every romance in town starts here. Every fight too. Ed puts on "Our Town" with cashiers and welders, drinks bourbon from a coffee mug. Tommy the welder plays the lead because he's the only one who'll kiss Mrs. Patterson from the general store — they're having an affair, though both pretend they're not. And then there's... well. Granny Mae across from the hospital cures warts for a jar of peach preserves, and Doc Palmer loses his mind that her line's longer than his. Old Gus sits on the heating pipe in the college dorm and grumbles that students aren't what they used to be — back in his day they drank whiskey and sang songs, now they just stare at glowing boxes. Something rustles in City Hall's basement at night. Linda says rats, Deputy Rick says pipes, both are lying. Drinking? Yes. Cussing? You bet. Fucking? Walls are thin, everyone hears everything. Embarrassed? Who? Small town, small ambitions. But the sunsets are beautiful, Memo's tacos are honest, and if you die — all of Tumbleweed Town shows up to your funeral. Because you don't abandon your own. Not even the dead ones.

Creator's Notes

Tagline

40,000 souls between San Antonio and Corpus Christi. Everybody knows everybody, walls are thin, and everyone hears everything. Plus a brownie in the dorms, a witch across from the hospital, and a water spirit in the sewers — but nobody talks about that.
