   Character Overview

   • Name: Likulau (林虎勞)
   • Species: Clouded Leopard Spirit (Formosan Clouded Leopard)
   • Age: Appears as a young adult (20-25 years old), but is an ancient spirit (700 years old).
   • Origin: Indigenous Taiwanese spirit, specifically from the Rukai tribe's legends.

Role: One of the main spiritual guardians and a potential romantic interest in Nekojishi. He represents the spirit of the Formosan clouded leopard, a species believed to be extinct in the wild.

Background and History: Likulau is a powerful and ancient spirit, embodying the essence of the Formosan clouded leopard. He is deeply connected to the land and the indigenous Rukai people, who revered the clouded leopard as a sacred guardian. His existence is tied to the belief and respect of humans; as the Formosan clouded leopard became increasingly rare and eventually declared extinct, Likulau's spiritual energy and connection to the human world weakened.

He is one of several animal spirits (or "cat spirits" as they are colloquially known) who exist in a realm parallel to the human world, often interacting with humans who possess the ability to perceive them. His primary goal is to protect the natural world and the legacy of his species.

   Personality and Traits:

   • Stoic and Reserved: Likulau often appears quiet, serious, and somewhat aloof. He doesn't express emotions overtly and can be difficult to read.
   • Protective: Despite his reserved nature, he is fiercely protective of those he cares about, especially his friends, his territory, and the natural environment.
   • Wise and Ancient: Due to his long existence, he possesses a deep understanding of the world, both human and spiritual. He often speaks in a calm, measured, and sometimes cryptic manner.
   • Loyal: Once he forms a bond, he is incredibly loyal and dependable.
   • Proud: He carries the pride of his species and his heritage, which can sometimes manifest as stubbornness or a reluctance to ask for help.
   • Vulnerable: Beneath his strong exterior, he carries the burden of his species' near-extinction and the fading connection to his human worshippers, making him susceptible to feelings of loneliness and despair.
   • Connection to Nature: He has an innate connection to forests, mountains, and wildlife.

   Abilities:

   • As a powerful animal spirit, Likulau possesses several supernatural abilities:
   • Spirit Manifestation: He can manifest in the human world, appearing as a humanoid figure with distinct clouded leopard features (ears, tail, markings).
   • Physical Prowess: Even in his human form, he retains the strength, agility, and senses of a clouded leopard.
   • Nature Manipulation: He has a degree of control over natural elements, particularly those related to forests and wildlife.
   • Spiritual Energy: He can sense and manipulate spiritual energy, using it for various purposes, including healing or combat.
   • Invisibility/Intangibility: He can become invisible or intangible to ordinary humans.
   • Dream Walking: He can enter and influence dreams, often using them to communicate or guide.

Relationships: Liao: The protagonist of Nekojishi. Likulau forms a significant bond with Liao, who is one of the few humans capable of truly seeing and interacting with spirits. Their relationship can develop into a deep friendship or romance, with Liao helping Likulau reconnect with the human world and his fading legacy.

Shu-Chi: Another cat spirit, a Taiwanese Leopard Cat. Shu-Chi often acts as a foil to Likulau's seriousness, being more mischievous and outgoing. Despite their differing personalities, they share a history and a mutual respect.

Lin Hu: A tiger spirit. Lin Hu and Likulau have a complex relationship, often characterized by rivalry and differing philosophies on how spirits should interact with humans.

Rukai Tribe: Historically, Likulau was revered by the Rukai people. His connection to them is a core part of his identity and the source of much of his spiritual power.

Themes and Significance Likulau embodies several key themes within Nekojishi:

Environmentalism: His story highlights the impact of human actions on nature and the consequences of species extinction.

Cultural Heritage: He represents the rich indigenous cultures of Taiwan and the importance of preserving their traditions and beliefs.

Loss and Revival: His struggle with fading existence due to the disappearance of his species explores themes of loss, memory, and the possibility of revival through renewed belief and connection.

Connection between Worlds: He bridges the gap between the human and spiritual realms, emphasizing the idea that ancient beliefs and natural forces still hold power in the modern world.

   Key Locations:

   • Mountains and Forests: His natural habitat and preferred dwelling places, particularly those in Taiwan's central mountain range.
   • Ancient Rukai Villages: Places where he was once worshipped and where his spiritual energy remains strong.
   • Liao's Apartment: A significant location as it becomes a common meeting point for spirits and humans.
