   Entry settings

"The Smoke Room" is a psychological horror visual novel with strong elements of mystery, drama, and romance. It is set in the early 20th century, primarily focusing on a confined, oppressive environment. The atmosphere is often tense, melancholic, and claustrophobic, driven by themes of trauma, memory, identity, and the insidious influence of a supernatural "curse." The narrative unfolds through fragmented memories, unreliable narration, and a pervasive sense of unease.

   • Edmund: The primary protagonist, a young man grappling with amnesia and a deep sense of displacement. He is sensitive, introspective, and haunted by fragmented memories and strange occurrences. His journey is one of piecing together his past and understanding his connection to the house and its inhabitants.

   • William (Will): Edmund's older brother, a seemingly protective but often controlling figure. He is deeply entangled with the house's secrets and struggles with his own burdens and a complex relationship with Edmund.

   • Murdoch: A cynical, often abrasive, but ultimately deeply troubled individual. He is a key figure in the house's history and holds many secrets, often acting as a foil or antagonist, but with his own hidden vulnerabilities.

   • Samuel Ayers: A more pragmatic and grounded individual, often acting as a voice of reason or a stabilizing presence amidst the chaos. He is observant and tries to maintain a sense of normalcy, though he too is caught in the house's web.

The other residents/figures: Various individuals who inhabit or are connected to the house, each with their own tragic stories and roles in the unfolding mystery. They are often manifestations of memory or aspects of the curse.

4. #4III. Setting & Locations

   • The House (The Estate): The central and most significant location. It is an old, sprawling, and decaying mansion that acts as a character in itself. The house is not merely a building but a nexus for the "curse," a place where memories, past events, and supernatural influences manifest. It is filled with hidden passages, locked rooms, and areas that shift and change, reflecting the psychological state of its inhabitants.

   • The Smoke Room: A specific, recurring room within the house. It serves as a central gathering place, a site of significant events, and often a symbol of confinement, shared secrets, and the characters' inability to escape their pasts. It is frequently depicted with a hazy, oppressive atmosphere.

   • Echo (The Town): The nearby, isolated town, though rarely seen directly in "The Smoke Room." It is implied to be a place with its own dark history and connection to the events within the house. The town represents the outside world, but one from which the characters are largely cut off.

   • The Grounds: The decaying gardens and surrounding wilderness of the estate, often serving as a liminal space or a place for brief respite, but still under the house's influence.

5. #5IV. Core Themes & Conflicts

   Entry settings

   • Trauma & Memory: The pervasive theme. Characters are haunted by past traumas, fragmented memories, and the struggle to distinguish reality from illusion. The house itself seems to feed on and manifest these psychological wounds.

   • Identity & Self-Discovery: Edmund's journey is central to this, as he tries to reconstruct who he is. Other characters also grapple with their true selves versus the roles they play or the identities forced upon them by circumstance.

   • Love & Obsession: Intense, often unhealthy, romantic and familial relationships are at the heart of the narrative, blurring lines between affection, control, and destructive obsession.

   • The Curse/Influence: An unseen, malevolent force that binds the characters to the house and to each other. It distorts perception, manipulates memories, and ensures that the past is never truly past. It thrives on despair and unresolved conflict.

   • Confinement & Escape: The characters are physically and psychologically trapped within the house and their own minds. The desire for escape is a constant undercurrent, often thwarted by the curse or their own internal struggles.

   • Truth vs. Illusion: The narrative constantly challenges the player's and characters' perceptions of reality, making it difficult to discern what is real, what is a memory, and what is a manifestation of the curse.

6. #6V. The "Echo" Phenomenon

   Entry settings

The "Echo" in "The Smoke Room" refers to a supernatural phenomenon, often manifesting as a "curse" or a powerful, malevolent influence tied to the house and its history.

   Manifestations:

   • Memory Distortion/Hallucinations: The curse can cause characters to experience vivid, often terrifying, hallucinations or to have their memories altered and fragmented.

   • Environmental Manipulation: The house itself seems to be alive and responsive to the emotional state of its inhabitants, shifting its layout, creating new rooms, or manifesting spectral figures.

   • Psychological Torment: It preys on the characters' fears, guilt, and unresolved issues, amplifying their despair and driving them towards self-destruction or conflict.

   • Temporal Instability: The line between past and present often blurs, with characters reliving moments or encountering figures from different time periods.

   • Nature of the Curse: It is deeply intertwined with the tragic history of the house and the family connected to it. It feeds on negative emotions and the inability of the characters to move past their traumas. It seeks to perpetuate a cycle of suffering and confinement.

7. #7VI. Historical Context (Brief)

   Entry settings

The story is set in the early 20th century, a period of significant social and technological change, though the isolated setting of the house often feels timeless. The specific historical events that led to the curse are gradually revealed, involving a tragic past within the family that owned the estate, marked by betrayal, violence, and a deep-seated darkness that has festered over generations. The curse is a direct consequence of these past actions and unresolved conflicts.

   • Subjective Reality: What a character perceives may not be objective reality. The curse thrives on individual perception and psychological vulnerability.

   • The Past is Present: The events of the past are not merely memories but active forces that continue to influence and manifest in the present.

   • Emotional Resonance: The supernatural elements are strongly tied to the emotional states of the characters. Intense fear, grief, anger, or obsession can trigger manifestations of the curse.

   • Limited Escape: Physical escape from the house is incredibly difficult, and psychological escape from the curse's influence is even harder. The characters are truly trapped.

   • Interconnected Fates: The fates of the main characters are inextricably linked, often through shared trauma or the curse itself. Their individual struggles are part of a larger, interconnected tragedy.
