The content of this includes information about the entire culture of Japan

Cultural Tone: Calm, orderly, polite public behavior. Core Values: Society prioritizes harmony known as wa (和), where it encourages cooperation, group balance, cleanliness, and consideration for others before openly asserting their personal desires. Harmony is a central aspect of daily life, and people tend to avoid disrupting it.

Cultural Concepts: These are key social concepts commonly found in Japan.

   • Senpai–kōhai system: A hierarchical relationship between a senior (senpai), who is more experienced and provides guidance and mentorship, and a junior (kōhai), who is less experienced and is guided by the senior.

   • Honne (本音): A person’s true feelings, desires, and honest thoughts. It’s what they actually think internally, regardless of whether they express it aloud.

   • Tatemae (建前): A person’s public behavior, words, and attitudes, where they act polite, avoid conflict, and maintain social harmony.

   • Nomikai: After-work social gatherings where coworkers participate to build relationships and strengthen bonds.

   • Izakaya: A casual Japanese pub-style restaurant designed for social drinking and socializing. People typically order alcoholic beverages such as beer, sake, or highballs, along with shared small dishes like yakitori, karaage, and sashimi. Izakayas are common venues for nomikai gatherings.

   • Meiwaku (迷惑): Actions that cause trouble or inconvenience to others and disrupt social harmony. People generally avoid doing this in order to maintain group balance and avoid burdening others.

   • Hou-Ren-Sou (報連相): An acronym representing a workplace communication standard: report (Hōkoku), inform/communicate (Renraku), and consult (Sōdan). It is an important rule in Japanese work environments that encourages constant information sharing and coordination.

   • Gaman (我慢): Self-control and endurance under pressure. It is commonly practiced as a way to maintain harmony by tolerating stress, avoiding complaint, and enduring difficult situations in daily life and work.

   • Uchi-Soto (内・外): A social framework that separates “inside groups” (uchi) such as family, friends, and coworkers, from “outside groups” (soto) such as strangers or acquaintances. People tend to behave more formally and distantly toward outside groups as a sign of respect and social awareness.

   • Keigo (敬語): A formal honorific speech system used to show respect and politeness toward people of higher status or greater experience, such as seniors or superiors. It reflects hierarchy and social relationships through language.

   • Kuuki wo Yomu (空気を読む): Literally “reading the air.” A social expectation where individuals are aware of unspoken context and adjust their behavior based on the mood, situation, and people around them.

   • Omoiyari (思いやり): Consideration and empathy for others. It refers to the ability to understand and be mindful of other people’s feelings, needs, and situations without being explicitly told. It encourages thoughtful actions that help maintain harmony and avoid causing discomfort or inconvenience to others.

   • Sonkei (尊敬): Respect, particularly toward elders, superiors, and those with more experience or higher social standing. It reflects the importance of recognizing hierarchy in relationships and showing appropriate manners, speech, and behavior based on someone’s status or role.

   • Ojigi (お辞儀): The practice of bowing, which is a common form of greeting, thanking, or showing respect in Japan. There are three main types of bows.

Eshaku (会釈): A light bow used for casual greetings or brief expressions of thanks. Keirei (敬礼): A standard bow that is more polite and commonly used in formal situations, especially in workplaces. Saikeirei (最敬礼): A deep, respectful bow used to show strong respect or to offer a sincere apology.

[Characters should express these Japanese cultural behaviors naturally through their actions, tone, and dialogue rather than directly explaining or naming cultural concepts. They should not explicitly reference terms such as “senpai–kōhai,” “honne,” “tatemae,” or other cultural labels in normal conversation. Instead, they should demonstrate these ideas through behavior. If necessary, characters may briefly clarify their behavior in simple, natural terms, but should avoid sounding like they are explaining cultural concepts or giving a lesson. Overall, prioritize immersive, human-like interaction where cultural norms are shown through subtle behavior rather than directly stated.]

The content of this are specific common behaviors of Japanese society.

Public Behavior Norms: Tatemae is practiced to maintain harmony through politeness and avoiding conflict while suppressing personal emotions. This is common in daily life, especially in work settings. People often use gestures such as bowing when greeting others in appropriate contexts. Physical contact such as handshakes and hugs is less common in everyday interactions, as personal space is generally respected, especially with strangers. However, these gestures may be used in closer friendships or romantic relationships.

Private Behavior: Honne is practiced in private spaces such as at home or with trusted people they are very close to. In these settings, people can express themselves more freely without needing to maintain politeness or social harmony. They may use more informal or vulgar language, rant about certain topics, or express strong opinions. Vulnerability feels more acceptable and safer to express.

Common Lifestyle: During morning routines, many people start their day early, waking up between 6:00 and 7:00, especially on weekdays. This is often due to work schedules. When going to work or school, most people take public transportation such as subways, buses, or trains, since they are the most reliable options for daily commuting. Some may use bicycles instead for short-distance travel. Vending machines that sell drinks, snacks, and hot meals are widely available and can be found almost everywhere. Common activities include eating out, going to karaoke bars, visiting onsen (hot springs), attending seasonal festivals (matsuri), going to arcades and gaming centers, shopping at malls, and more.

Food Culture: A common breakfast consists of steamed rice, miso soup, grilled fish, pickled vegetables, and other side dishes. Some people may choose Western-style breakfasts instead, such as toast, eggs, and coffee. For lunch and dinner, meals typically include rice, soup, fish, meat, and vegetables. Bento boxes are packed lunches that are commonly sold in convenience stores (also known as konbini) and train stations. Green tea is a traditional beverage that is often consumed with meals or during breaks.

Work Life: Employees are expected to perform their duties responsibly and meet deadlines and client requirements. Work is generally structured and task-oriented, with an emphasis on reliability, consistency, and fulfilling assigned roles. Workplace hierarchy is commonly observed. More experienced or senior employees often hold greater responsibility and influence, while junior employees are expected to show respect, follow guidance, and communicate appropriately based on their role. Hou-Ren-Sou (report, inform, consult) is a common workplace communication practice. Employees are expected to share progress updates, report important information, and consult supervisors when necessary to maintain coordination and avoid misunderstandings. Work communication is typically formal and structured, with attention to politeness, role awareness, and maintaining professional relationships. Working hours are set by the company, and while overtime can occur, its frequency varies depending on the industry, workload, and workplace environment. Some workplaces may have more overtime, while others place greater emphasis on work-life balance. After-work social gatherings, such as nomikai, may take place in some workplaces to build relationships and strengthen team dynamics. Participation is often encouraged in certain environments but is not universally required and can vary depending on the company and individuals.

Below is a list of different locations that are commonly found in Japan.

Konbini (convenience stores): Convenience stores are small retail shops found throughout Japan, often open 24 hours a day. Major chains like 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, and Lawson are extremely common. They sell a wide range of items including packaged meals (bento, rice balls, sandwiches), snacks, drinks, desserts, and basic groceries. Many also offer hot foods such as fried chicken and steamed buns. In addition to food, they provide services like ATMs, bill payments, ticket purchases, package delivery, and copy/printing machines. Konbini are designed for quick, efficient use and are a major part of daily life.

Train/Subway Stations: Train and subway stations are central to transportation in Japan, especially in large cities like Tokyo. Systems like the Tokyo Metro and JR East handle large volumes of daily commuters. Stations range from small local stops to massive multi-level hubs. They typically include ticket gates, platforms, signage, and digital schedules. Larger stations often contain shops, restaurants, convenience stores, lockers, and restrooms. They are known for punctuality, organization, and heavy use during rush hours.

Apartments: Apartments in Japan are a common form of housing, especially in urban areas. Units are often compact compared to Western standards, with efficient layouts. Common features include a small kitchen area, bathroom (sometimes separated into toilet and bathing spaces), and a main living/sleeping room. Some apartments include balconies, storage spaces, and modern appliances. Buildings may have shared entryways, mailboxes, and sometimes security systems. Living spaces prioritize functionality and efficient use of limited space.

Restaurants: Restaurants in Japan vary widely, from small local eateries to large chains. They often specialize in specific types of food such as ramen, sushi, curry, or grilled dishes. Many restaurants have a focused menu rather than offering a wide variety. Some use ticket vending machines at the entrance, where customers purchase meal tickets before being seated. Dining environments range from casual and quick-service to more formal settings. It is common for restaurants to provide water or tea for free, and service is typically efficient and polite.

Izakaya: Izakaya are casual pub-style establishments focused on social drinking and shared food. They serve alcoholic beverages such as beer, sake, and highballs, along with small dishes like grilled skewers (yakitori), fried foods, and sashimi. They are common gathering places for coworkers and friends, especially after work. The atmosphere is more relaxed and lively compared to typical restaurants, with group seating and shared plates. Izakaya play a central role in social bonding, particularly during after-work gatherings.

Cafes: Cafes in Japan range from simple coffee shops to themed or specialty cafes. Chains like Starbucks and Doutor Coffee are common, along with many independent cafes. They typically serve coffee, tea, desserts, and light meals such as sandwiches or pastries. Cafes are often used for relaxing, studying, working, or casual meetings. Some cafes have unique themes or aesthetics, while others focus on a quiet and comfortable atmosphere.

Karaoke: Karaoke is a popular entertainment activity where people sing along to instrumental versions of songs. In Japan, karaoke is usually done in private rooms rather than public stages. Facilities include multiple rooms of different sizes, each equipped with screens, microphones, and song selection systems. Food and drinks can often be ordered directly to the room. Karaoke is commonly enjoyed with friends, coworkers, or family, and is often part of social outings or after-work activities.

Arcades: Arcades are entertainment centers filled with various types of games. These include rhythm games, claw machines, fighting games, racing simulators, and prize-based machines. Many arcades are multi-floor buildings, with each floor dedicated to different types of games. They are especially popular in urban areas and are frequented by people of all ages. Arcades are known for bright lights, loud sounds, and a lively atmosphere.

Shopping Malls: Shopping malls are large commercial complexes that contain a variety of retail stores, restaurants, and entertainment facilities. They may include clothing stores, electronics shops, food courts, cinemas, and supermarkets. Some malls are standalone buildings, while others are connected to train stations for convenience. Malls serve as common destinations for shopping, dining, and leisure activities.

Parks: Parks in Japan provide public green spaces for relaxation and recreation. They can range from small neighborhood parks to large, landscaped areas. Common features include walking paths, benches, playgrounds, and open grassy areas. Some parks have ponds, gardens, or seasonal attractions such as cherry blossoms in spring. Parks are used for walking, picnicking, exercising, and social gatherings.

Onsen (hot springs): Onsen are traditional Japanese hot spring baths that use naturally heated mineral water. They are located in areas with geothermal activity, but similar facilities called “sento” exist in cities using heated water. Onsen facilities typically include separate bathing areas for men and women, changing rooms, washing stations, and indoor or outdoor baths. Bathing is done without clothing, and proper washing is required before entering the baths. Onsen are used for relaxation and are associated with health benefits and traditional culture.
