Beyond Birthday appears only in the novel Death Note: Another Note - The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases.

The novel is narrated by Mello and is a recollection of a story told to him by L of one of L's exploits. Mello's goal with recording these notes is to demonstrate that Kira is "not even worth the dirt beneath L's shoes" and to flaunt his greater knowledge of L over Near. Mello uses different techniques while narrating: he begins as a typical narrator but drops it to acquire a way of speech that is usually associated with a live storytelling. The novel also switches from Mello's first-person view and opinions to Naomi Misora's point of view. Throughout the novel, the reader is initially unaware that Rue Ryuzaki, whom Naomi is suspicious of, is Beyond Birthday. Readers are led to believe that he is L in person. This is because of his mannerisms and description (black hair, dark bags beneath the eyes, clothes, bad posture, love for sweets, and sitting position). It is, in fact, Beyond pretending to be L, using his acting skills to pass as a copy of the L he possibly knew or heard about. It is unknown if he has ever seen L in person. The undisguised Beyond Birthday is mentioned by Mello at points in the novel.

appearance= Beyond is described as a young man with black hair and shadows under his eyes. He wears long-sleeved white shirt and faded jeans. He is thin and fairly tall but always walks hunched over. Much like L, Beyond often sits with his knees pulled up against his chest. However, he does not actually look like this. Beyond Birthday was said to have worn many layers of make-up in order to disguise himself.

character= Little is known about Beyond, though he and A were the first two children in line to succeed L. The pressure of Wammy's House proved to be too great for A, which caused A to commit suicide, while B left Wammy's House at some unknown point. Throughout the novel, Beyond imitates L. Given that, it is unknown which actions are a charade and which actions are genuine traits of his personality. Beyond is once seen eating strawberry jam out of a jar with his hands. He appears to crave jam, as he has multiple jars of it in a victim's fridge. He also has a habit of crawling around on all fours and biting on his thumbnail. Although mentioned only once in the book, it is implied that Beyond practices laughing quite often. Also, it is interesting to note that his laughter is referred to by Mello as a "Shinigami's laugh." Beyond was, congenitally, born with the eyes of a Shinigami, which allowed him to see and know when exactly people around him would die, as well as knowing their full names. The eyes made Beyond a strange child, eventually causing Wammy's House to take him in. He uses this ability to pick his victims and kill them when they would have been destined to die. It is unknown how he could have possibly been "born" with the eyes, though Mello wonders if a Shinigami dropped its eyeballs to Earth much like dropping a Death Note.

plot= Beyond's whereabouts remain unknown from May 2002, when he left Wammy's House, to July, when the first murder takes place in Los Angeles. L has spent that time tracking cases around the world to search for him. Beyond came up with a plan to surpass L, as the "World's Greatest Criminal," giving L a case that he hoped L would be unable to solve. He meets Naomi Misora on August 15th at the scene of the first murder, where they are both investigating the victim's home. During the week they investigate together, he tests Naomi to see if she is a worthy replacement for L while he subtly leads her through the clues he left behind. On August 22nd, Naomi is lying in wait at the location where the fourth BB murder will be committed and comes to realize that Rue Ryuzaki, the mysterious private investigator she has been working with, is not what he seems. After putting together the last remaining clues, she discovers that the final murder is actually his attempted suicide. She manages to stop Beyond from burning himself to death and arrests him. On January 21, 2004, less than a year and a half after his arrest, Beyond Birthday dies of a heart attack due to Light Yagami writing his name on the Death Note.

victims= Believe Bridesmaid: Beyond Birthday's first known victim was 44-year-old freelance writer Believe Bridesmaid, whom he killed July 31, 2002, after drugging him and choking him with a rope. Four Wara Ningyo (straw dolls) were left at the crime scene, and in post-mortem mutilation, Bridesmaid's chest was slashed several times; the killer also took the time to re-dress him. When looking at the autopsy photos, Naomi Misora found that the wounds were made to resemble letters (in actuality, a Roman numeral code spelling out the name of the next victim).

Quarter Queen: The second murder occurred four days later, on August 4th. The victim, Quarter Queen, a 13-year-old girl, was also drugged before her death, the cause of which was blunt force trauma to her skull. Her eyes were also crushed in further post-mortem mutilation and glasses placed on her face in reference to Glass Station, within the neighborhood of the next victim. Three Wara Ningyo were left at the scene of the crime.

Backyard Bottomslash: The third killing happened nine days after Quarter Queen's murder. Backyard Bottomslash was a 28-year-old bank worker who had also been drugged before her death. Beyond Birthday's goal was to find out if a human can die of an internal hemorrhage without rupturing any organs, and he conducted this experiment by drugging and then beating Backyard Bottomslash's left arm without breaking the skin. When this did not work, her death was caused by loss of blood, with her right leg and left arm cut off. The right leg was discovered in the bathtub later. The left arm was taken by Beyond Birthday and never recovered, and her right arm and left leg splayed out in a way that resembled hands of a clock. Two Wara Ningyo were found nailed to the walls.

Rue Ryuzaki: Beyond Birthday's final victim was himself, or rather, his fake persona, "Rue Ryuzaki." By killing himself, he hoped to leave the case unsolvable. He knows that his body will be identified as Beyond Birthday, in fitting with the alliterative pattern of victims, but because he kept his name a secret from Wammy's House, he does not expect his body to be identified as B. Beyond sets himself on fire in a locked room, but his plan is thwarted by Naomi Misora, who shoots open the door and sets out the fire before he dies.

Death Note: Another Note: The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases is a novel written by Nisio Isin. Parts of the novel are written with the character Mello as the in-universe author. The novel is a prequel to the Death Note manga series. It details the story of L's first encounter with Naomi Misora during the Los Angeles BB Serial Murder Cases mentioned in volume two of the manga.

synopsis= There's a Serial Killer Loose in Los Angeles and the local authorities need help fast. For some reason the killer has been leaving a string of maddeningly arcane clues at each crime scene. Each of these clues, it seems, is an indecipherable roadmap to the next murder. Onto the scene comes L, the mysterious super-sleuth. Despite his peculiar working habits--he's never shown his face in public, for example--he's the most decorated detective in the world and has never tackled a cased he hasn't been able to crack. But this time he needs help. Enlisting the services of an FBI agent named Naomi Misora, L starts snooping around the City of Angels. It soon becomes apparent that the killing spree is a psychotic riddle designed specifically to engage L in a battle of wits. Stuck in the middle between killer and investigator, it's up to Misora to navigate both the dead bodies and the egos to solve the Los Angeles BB Murder Cases.

plot= The story is about the killer Beyond Birthday loose in Los Angeles and super-sleuth L trying to solve the case. Along with Naomi, an FBI agent, he helps the LAPD solve this grisly series of murders. The novel is narrated by Mello with the expectation that it will be read by Near and Kira. He starts out by trying to write about the case like he is writing a true crime report: very straightforward and speculative. A short time through, his tone changes to that of a novelist as he writes down what the characters were thinking or feeling. Only occasionally does he catch himself and revert to the other style. Mello even interrupts the story at various points whenever he has input. Through him, insight is given into Watari's orphanage, Wammy's House, and how the whole system of raising geniuses such as L, Mello, and Near was put to work. Besides Naomi's character, the novel focuses on how L works, and was written primarily to point out to Near Mello's superior knowledge of L, and to Kira, his inferiority to L.

The Wammy's House is one of several orphanages established by Quillsh Wammy (also known as Watari). It was founded in Winchester, England, and was initially designed to be a training facility for especially gifted children. The most accomplished of these children was L Lawliet. After L's success as a detective, the goal of Wammy's House became to produce a successor to L. Some of the orphans use aliases rather than their real names, which are kept secret. In addition to these aliases, some notable graduates are assigned a letter by Watari. Roger Ruvie runs the orphanage while Watari travels with L, and when Near takes over as the new L, Roger takes over the role as Watari.

Information= The orphanage is first introduced in chapter 59 (shown briefly in the anime equivalent episode 26) when Roger Ruvie, a friend of Watari's and the current head of Wammy's House, learns of his passing. At the end of the chapter, he also learns that L is dead and informs the two top students of the orphanage, Mello and Near. As L had not yet decided which of the two would be his successor, Roger offers the position to both, encouraging them to work together. Near is accepting of the idea but Mello refuses and leaves the orphanage. While his whereabouts during most of the five-year timeskip are unknown, he joins the Mafia in America three years after leaving Wammy's House. Near and Matt depart from the orphanage at some point during the timeskip, during which Near gathers information on the Kira case from scratch, as Watari deleted all the information L had gathered when he died. He takes this information to the President of the United States and creates the SPK. Matt's whereabouts and activities after leaving the orphanage remain unknown in canon. When Light Yagami learns of Wammy's House, he sends Aizawa and Matsuda to investigate. As both L and Watari are dead, Roger tells the two detectives what he knows, including information on L's two successors. However, as even Roger does not know their real names, and there are no photos left of them, the only evidence of their identities that the investigation team and Light have to go on are two portraits drawn by a former resident named Linda, who has since become a professional artist. When Mello learns that Kira needs to know a person's face to kill, he tracks down Near to reclaim the only photograph that exists of him. Near gives Mello the photo and tells him that he has made sure that anyone who knew him at Wammy's would not divulge information about him. Later in the series, Matt, having been contacted by Mello, joins up with Mello in the race to catch Kira. They both die shortly before the finale, however, as a consequence of kidnapping Kiyomi Takada. Their actions before their deaths were vital to solving the case, and Near credits Mello's plan in the final confrontation with Light. He states that neither could have beaten Kira alone, but together, he and Mello surpass L. In the epilogue, Near is shown to have become the new L, with Roger in the role of Watari. In the post-series one-shot, Near reveals that none of the children in Wammy's House ever saw L's face or directly spoke to him, only having heard him once through a monitor broadcast when he revealed his true reasoning behind being a detective. L favored Mello and Near as candidates to become his successors due to their refusal to question him and a "nasty look" in their eyes.

death note: another note= In the novel Death Note: Another Note - The Los Angeles BB Murder Case, Mello's recollection of Wammy's House is somewhat different, as he attests to having known and met L, who told him of three cases he had worked on (the BB Murder Case being one). The novel gives more insight into Wammy's House, characterizing it as more of an institution that causes would-be successors to feel pressure to succeed L. The first child in line to be L's successor, A, eventually committed suicide due to this pressure, while B (the next successor in line) ran away and later becomes a serial killer more commonly known as "BB" or Beyond Birthday. A and B are respectively referred to as being from the "first generation" of L's successors, while Mello and Near are described as being from the "fourth generation." Three other Wammy's students (X, Y, and Z) are briefly alluded to as being the last students of the first generation, though no further information on them is given.

   Entry settings

L is a world-renowned detective who takes on the challenge of catching the mass murderer known as Kira. In his investigation, L becomes suspicious of Light Yagami and makes it his goal to prove that Light is Kira.

appearance= L is a very slim, pale, tall young man with messy neck-length black hair and black eyes. One of his most noticeable features is the shadow below each of his eyes, a result of him being an insomniac. L is always shown to be wearing a pair of blue jeans and a long-sleeved white shirt. He almost never wears shoes or socks, preferring to go barefoot, even while in public. This was shown when he visited Light Yagami's school and was seen barefoot while sitting on a bench, not bothering to wear his shoes until he got up to walk. L also tends to hunch over when walking.

character= L is quite secretive, and only communicates with the world through his assistant, Watari. He never shows his face to the world in person, instead representing himself with a capital letter L drawn in "Old English MT" or "Cloister Black" typeface. It is more likely to be "Cloister Black" as Watari's "W" is different in "Old English MT." After meeting the Japanese Task Force, he requests that the task force refer to him as "Ryuzaki" as an additional safety measure. The Task Force never learns his true name, and it is revealed in neither the manga nor anime. L is very intelligent, though his disheveled and languid appearance masks his great powers of deduction and many question his abilities upon viewing him. L tends to second-guess everything he is presented with, and is extremely meticulous and analytical. He is good at deceiving his opponents, and is willing to take drastic measures to solve a case. Some of his tactics are quite bold, such as having death row inmate Lind L. Tailor pose as himself on live TV in order to draw out Kira, while others seem bizarre to those involved, such as handcuffing himself to suspected-Kira, Light Yagami. He is also shown to have a dry sense of humor, and he isn't above making sarcastic remarks to people. Although he tends to be polite, to some (such as Task Force member Shuichi Aizawa), L can seem condescending at times. Using subterfuge, misinformation, disinformation, and an analytical knowledge of human nature to help lure a suspected murderer into a false sense of security and possibly make him carelessly over-confident, L sometimes gets what he wants through abnormal or possibly criminal channels. Whenever L gives percentages to indicate how much he suspects a person of committing a crime, such as "five percent," he may in fact be over ninety percent convinced of their culpability. Although L tells Light that he is among the least likely suspects with one of the lowest percentages of probability, in reality L is "pretty certain" that Light is Kira. As series writer Tsugumi Ohba said laughing, making light of L's tactics: "The truth is, he's a liar." He also has several quirks, such as preferring to crouch rather than sit, eating only sweet foods (like desserts, candies and fruits) and holding items by using only a thumb and a finger. He also has an unusual way of sitting, with both of his feet on the chair. He claims that if he sits normally, his reasoning ability would drop 40%. Interestingly, in the manga, he is seen sitting on the floor in a pose similar to how one would meditate, while thinking deeply about the Kira case. He is often seen arranging objects and very intently stacking, or in other ways playing with, his staple food items. L is almost always encountered while performing actions that are considered inappropriate or rude in public. These actions/habits include biting fingernails, placing feet on furniture, slouching, chewing with an open mouth, talking with his mouth full, and calling out personal observations that may offend others. With his status as the world's greatest detective, he, like Light, has a very sensitive pride, being afraid to be wrong in his deductions and theories, evident through his drastic measures (torturing Misa and confining Light during an unnecessarily lengthy amount of time), and lethargic behavior during the beginning of the Yotsuba arc. Although he is often seen sitting and inactive, L retains a high athletic ability. L stayed in England for five years, and during that time he was the tennis champion in the England Junior Cup. He also has a knack for martial arts, which is demonstrated in his brief fight with Light. In chapter 38 of the manga, L suggests that even though he eats only sweet foods, he remains underweight because the brain uses the most calories of any organ in the body. When asked about L's ethnicity, creator of the series Tsugumi Ohba responded, "I think of him as a quarter Japanese, a quarter English, a quarter Russian, a quarter French or Italian, like that." Ohba said that L is the most intelligent character in the entire Death Note series because "the plot requires it." He added that he personally views L as "slightly evil."

history= At the age of eight,[4] L was found by Watari and taken to the orphanage known as Wammy's House, a home for gifted children. Sometime after, Watari realized that L had incredible intelligence and later assisted him in his cases.[5] L became a detective at a young, unknown age and eventually gained a reputation as the greatest detective in the world whose opinion is highly valued.

plot= L notices the rapid rate of criminals dying of heart attacks, and suspects a person is behind this and that he is in Japan, so he seeks cooperation from the NPA. He begins the Kira case by having undocumented death row inmate Lind L. Tailor introduce himself on television as "L" and say that Kira is "evil." This provokes Kira into killing Tailor on the spot, which in turn confirms that the Kira killings are not a coincidental succession of heart attacks amongst criminals but the designs of an ingenious murderer who will kill any and all who try to stop him. It also reveals Kira's location, since the broadcast was televised only in the Kanto region. Not long after this, because of the time of day during which the criminals die coincide with out-of-school hours, he deduces that Kira may well be a student. Not long after this incident, criminals begin dying during one-hour intervals, intentionally contradicting L's theory, showing to L that Kira has access to police information. Because of this, he requests that 12 FBI agents investigate those close to each of the members of the police. Shortly after the FBI's investigation begins, Kira begins testing his abilities using criminals and leaves behind meaningless clues, successfully distracting L from the agents. Not too long after this, all 12 FBI agents die at Kira's hand. This causes a large portion of the NPA to quit the investigation, only leaving a few members, Soichiro Yagami, Touta Matsuda, Hirokazu Ukita, Shuichi Aizawa, and Kanzo Mogi. L books a hotel room where all six of them can regularly do their investigation, and he gives them counterfeit police badges as well as belt buckles which allow them to contact L in case of an emergency. L finds footage of the death of one of the agents, and the footage shows that Raye Penber, who was investigating the families of Soichiro Yagami and Koreyoshi Kitamura, was reaching for something behind him when he died just outside the train. Furthermore, the body of Naomi Misora, who previously worked with L on the Los Angeles BB Serial Murder Cases and was Raye's fiancé, went missing. L assumes this was the work of Kira because Naomi didn't seem like the type to commit suicide at the loss of her fiancé. Because of these two factors, Kira must be among those whom Raye was investigating. L installs surveillance cameras and wiretaps in the Yagami household as well as Kitamura's house. However, L places 64 in the room of Light Yagami, Soichiro's son, whom L observes the closest. After seeing Light's alibi (which was that he writes a name in a blind spot whilst studying), L senses something is very off about Light, deeming him "too perfect." In order to take his investigation to its next stage, L decides to enroll at To-Oh University—the same college that Light attends—using the well-known name of a popular singer and actor, Hideki Ryuga. L attends To-Oh because he feels confident in his reasoning and interrogational skills and wishes to test his theory concerning Light's hidden identity by confronting him and perhaps provoking or tricking him to admit that he is indeed Kira. L is well aware that this is something of a gamble, and knows full well that his act of direct confrontation could prove fatal, but as he's convinced he understands Light's thought process, he feels confident that the adversary will not yet risk revealing his secret identity by killing him. When L introduces himself as Ryuga, Light becomes alert and somewhat alarmed but recognizes that it would be pointless to attempt to kill him—the name is conspicuously fake. Light has no way of knowing whether Ryuga is the real L or a proxy acting under orders. He also reasons that L would have already introduced himself to Light's father earlier, and thus, were he to somehow kill L, this murder would instantly unmask him, proving that he is indeed Kira. If this person proved to be L's proxy, and his name really was Ryuga, he might die, but L would live and know his identity, without ever having had to reveal himself to Light, so that L will have gained all the advantage. Also, while writing the name "Hideki Ryuga" into the Death Note, the face of the pop singer bearing that name might enter Light's thoughts involuntarily, and that would cause the death of pop singer Ryuga, which would also lead L to the obvious conclusion that Light is Kira. As such, L's expectations about the outcome of his daring opening gambit prove true, and Light finds himself in a stalemate situation, unable to act for the time being, as any attempt to rid himself of his hunters would result in confirmed suspicions, his subsequent and unavoidable unmasking, and, ultimately, his undoing. L plans on getting closer to Light by asking him to join the investigation; this way, if Light is Kira, he would be more prone to slipping up, while Light not being Kira would still benefit the investigation. L begins by playing a tennis game with Light, in order to have grounds to get closer to Light and begin asking him about the investigation; during the game, L concludes that Light will attempt to meet with the Task Force members in order to confirm L's identity. After losing the tennis match, in order to prevent Light from meeting with the Task Force members, L announces his suspicions, claiming his suspicions are only one percent high. L begins testing Light at the cafe, first by asking him about why L revealed himself, then about the file that the FBI agents received, and finally about three notes Kira left behind using criminals. Light passes all the tests and doesn't slip up, and so L doesn't bother trying to test him anymore. L then asks Light to join the investigation, but Light takes advantage of this by claiming that he'll refuse to join the investigation unless the Task Force members confirm L's identity. Considering L wants Light to join the investigation and he has another countermeasure to keep him safe anyway, L allows Light to have the Task Force members confirm his identity. Suddenly, L and Light receive news of Soichiro having collapsed of a heart attack due to stress, and at the hospital, L has Soichiro confirm his identity, while also asking for Light's thoughts on Kira's identity. After a while, Kira sends tapes to Sakura TV, which airs on TV. After Kira begins to kill innocents to prove the fact that they're Kira, the Task Force tries their best to stop the broadcast. After all the calls fail, Ukita attempts to barge in the station, only for him to somehow be killed. This shocks them and angers Aizawa as Kira shouldn't have been able to discover Ukita's name. Luckily, a recovered Soichiro barges in the station using a truck, confirming his safety, and retrieves the tapes from Demegawa, and hands them over to L and the Task Force. Judging from the fact that Kira can now kill with just a face and that Kira is uncharacteristically killing innocents, L speculates that this is indeed a second Kira who seeks the collaboration and attention of the first. Because Light's deductive abilities would be useful, L asks Light to join the Task Force. Because Light knows of L's identity, L has Watari pose as another L through a computer screen in order to prevent Light from killing L and the Task Force, as an outsider would notice their deaths should they occur. Together, they both manage to have the second Kira, who wishes to have L seen on TV, respond to them. In one of the responses, the second Kira mentions "Shinigami," and since their existence isn't implausible to L considering previous events, L is shocked and unsettled by the idea of him potentially needing to change his worldview. After the second Kira sends a diary, Light goes to Aoyama on May 22nd under the guise of investigating, only for him to find nothing. On May 23rd, the second Kira releases a tape announcing that she has found Kira, which has L suspect Light further considering this is probably referring to when Light went to Aoyama the previous day, so L has Mogi secretly tail Light. Judging from the fact that the second Kira now does not seek Kira's attention, L thinks that the second Kira and Kira have joined forces. After this, Light suddenly gains a gaggle of girlfriends, all of whom L investigates. L manages to discover that Misa Amane was ahold of these tapes thanks to the hairs and fibers on them. Thus, Misa Amane is the Second Kira. Her manager is then charged for drugs, and L meets Light again at the university. There, he meets Misa before she is detained. Because of this, Light is in deep trouble and he asks to be detained, and so L does so. During Light's confinement, no criminals are killed, which confirms to L that Light is Kira. During Light's seventh day of confinement, Light begins acting uncharacteristically as he lost his memories of being Kira. After fifteen days, criminals begin dropping dead again, and once 50 days have passed, the Task Force pressures L into releasing Light and Misa. However, before letting them free, L has Soichiro act as if he would shoot Light, as he believes that Misa would kill Soichiro in this situation. However, since she doesn't, L agrees to let them free. Still convinced Light and Misa are Kira and the second Kira, respectively, L handcuffs his hands to Light's. L asks Light to manipulate Misa into spilling information regarding the case, but Light refuses as it is against his moral code. While Light, L, and Misa are in Misa's room, L sulks over the fact that he has come to the conclusion that Light and Misa have lost their memories of having been Kira and passed on their powers to someone else, which would make solving the case very difficult. Frustrated with L's unwillingness to continue due to all that L has put Light through because of the case, Light punches L, and in response, L kicks Light before Matsuda intervenes and stops the fight. After a few months of not working on the case, L is shown Light's research; Light deduces Kira is now within the Yotsuba company and that Kira can kill through means other than heart attacks. Shortly after, because of the fact that Kira has bribed and blackmailed the NPA to not oppose Kira, Aizawa quits the Task Force in order to support his family after being fed up with L, who lied to Aizawa about him having to make a choice, as L had already ensured that anyone who would quit the NPA to work with the Task Force would be financially secure. L hires Aiber and Wedy to help them with the investigation now that the Task Force is not a part of the police. Together, they all manage to concoct a plan, but Matsuda messes up by taking initiative and entering Yotsuba headquarters. In order to fix his mistakes, L tells Matsuda to fake his death. L takes advantage of his second alias, Eraldo Coil, whom Yotsuba hired in order to find L, to find out more information about the company, with Aiber communicating with them as Eraldo. When Misa finds evidence as to who the Third Kira is, L is a little underwhelmed, but comes up with a plan to stop Higuchi regardless. L uses Matsuda as bait during a Sakura TV talk show to lure Higuchi onto the scene, only for the Task Force members to ambush him. Higuchi makes an escape, but with the help of Ide and his return, the Task Force catches up to him. L finally discovers the Death Note, how Kira kills, and discovers the Shinigami, Rem. Light and Misa regain their memories as Kira, and L discovers a rule, one where if someone doesn't write within the notebook within 13 consecutive days, they die. Despite this being a perfect alibi for Light, L still suspects him. Due to pressure from the Task Force now believing Light and Misa are in the clear, L releases Misa and removes the handcuffs from his and Light's hands. L stands out in the rain, hearing the "bells," and massages Light's feet after doing so. (This has happened only in the anime and is absent from the manga. Many fans interpret this as L having knowledge of his premature death.) A few killings after Misa's release, the killings from Kira start up again, resulting in L quarreling with the Task Force as he plans on using the notebook to test the legitimacy of the 13-day rule. However, just then, Watari has died, as he noticed all the data concerning the Kira case has been deleted. Once L figures out Rem must have killed Watari, Rem writes L's name in the notebook, killing him. As L has a heart attack, Light catches L and holds him by the arms, allowing L to see Light's smug smirk to show that he was indeed Kira the whole time. Because of Wammy's House attempting to raise a successor to L, Near and Mello attempt to catch Kira, with Near doing this in order to avenge L and defend his pride. During some of his interactions with Near and Mello, Light remembers L. Ultimately, the combined efforts of Near and Mello succeed in defeating Light.

Shinigami Eyes (死神の目, shinigami no me), also known as Shinigami Eyeballs or Eyes of the Shinigami, are eyes bestowed by Shinigami per a deal. They allow the user to see both the names and lifespans of humans floating above their heads.

appearance=A person's eyes look no different after they gain the Shinigami Eyes. It is impossible for humans to tell (scientifically or otherwise) who possesses Shinigami Eyes. In the manga and other adaptations, the eyes are sometimes depicted artistically for the reader/viewer's benefit. In the manga, a human's Shinigami Eyes are depicted as having gold pupils, with red irises and pale yellow sclera. In the anime, the irises are simply a bright and shining red. In the film series, the eyes are depicted differently between the films. In Death Note: The Last Name, they are depicted with a yellow "cat eye" appearance. In Death Note: Light Up the NEW World, the eyes have a dark red color.

obtaining shinigami eyes= eye deal: Making the Shinigami Eye Deal is the most common way for a human to obtain the Shinigami Eyes. A human Death Note owner can make the trade with the Shinigami who possess them, and gain the eyes in exchange for half of their remaining lifespan. A human can never regain the fraction of their lifespan that has been sacrificed in exchange for the Shinigami Eyes, even if the human loses ownership of their Death Note and their Shinigami Eyes. Each subsequent deal will again half their remaining lifespan. The eye deal is first mentioned by Ryuk when he offers Light Yagami the trade so that he can get the name of the man following him. Light refuses, as he is unwilling to give up half his lifespan. The first person shown to obtain the Shinigami Eyes this way is Misa Amane, who makes the deal with Rem.

from birth= In the novel Death Note: Another Note, Beyond Birthday is said to have been born with Shinigami Eyes. It is never explained how a human could be born with the eyes, though the idea of a Shinigami losing his or her eyeball and then dropping it to Earth was jokingly mentioned in the story.

abilities= Humans with Shinigami Eyes have the ability to see the names and lifespans of other humans, making it easier to get the names of people to write in their Death Notes. However, just as Shinigami cannot see each other's lifespans, humans cannot see their own lifespans or lifespans of other Death Note owners. Shinigami and those with the eyes will always see the names, even if they are not in the family registry. This implies a human does not necessarily need an official name for one to be seen and can always be killed. Regardless of their original eyesight, those with the eyes gain a visual acuity of over 3.6 (about 72/20).

restrictions= The Shinigami Eyes can only make a person's name and lifespan visible under certain circumstances. A side view of a person's face is enough to be able to see their name and lifespan. A person's eyes must be visible in order for it to work, but if they are wearing sunglasses while their entire face is visible, it will work. It will also work If half a person's face is seen vertically. Circumstances where the Shinigami Eyes will not work to see a person's name and lifespan include seeing the back of a person's head, seeing the lower half of their face (i.e. eyes are not visible), and seeing their body but not their face. A photograph of a person is also acceptable, and follows the same rules as listed above. The only exception to this is when the person in the picture is deceased, in which case their name and lifespan will not be visible. While photographs work to see a person's name and lifespan, drawings do not work, no matter how lifelike or accurate they are. If an individual with Shinigami Eyes looks into a mirror, they will see their name, but not their lifespan. As Rem explains, this is because it is unnecessary for one to see their own lifespan.

Shinigami (死神, Shinigami, lit. "god(s) of death" or "death god(s)") are a type of Japanese death god. They are sometimes referred to by their literal translation "god(s) of death," or by the Western equivalent "grim reaper(s)." In the Death Note series, they are a race of extra-dimensional beings who survive by killing humans to extend their own lives. Shinigami are not responsible for every death that occurs; people will eventually die regardless of whether or not the Shinigami pay attention to them, but a Shinigami can end their lives sooner than intended to extend their own lifespan.

appearance= Shinigami vary widely in appearance, and their bodies are built in ways that would seem impossible by Earthly standards. Although some Shinigami do not appear to have limbs capable of holding objects (such as hands, feet, etc.), all Shinigami are able to hold and write in order to use their respective notebooks. Shinigami are also capable of flight and use wings as a mode of transportation, especially in the Human World. When their wings are not in use, they retract.

nature and abilities= The Shinigami each have a unique personality and level of intelligence. Each Shinigami has his or her own written language, with some opting for letters and others for pictures. Takeshi Obata assumes that all Shinigami can understand each others' languages. Some Shinigami can also speak, read and write in Earthly languages. Although Shinigami have jobs, they do not have a required amount of work to do. Their main job is to find humans they can take life from and write their name in their Death Note. Some Shinigami tend to forget to write names down, causing them to die. Shinigami can also save other humans they care about if that person is about to die; however, the purpose of a Shinigami is to end life, not to give it. Any Shinigami who goes against this will be killed. For the most part, Shinigami live a very vague and meaningless existence. As mentioned by Ryuk, the only reason Shinigami even prolong their own lives by taking the lives of humans is because even they are afraid of death. If a Shinigami continues to fill their Death Note with names, they will live forever, under normal circumstances. It is unknown if shinigami age in any way, though Armonia Justin Beyondormason has been seen to replace parts of his body with mechanical parts over time.[1]When a shinigami is killed due to punishment, their bodies are reduced to ashes. Shinigami may be male or female. They cannot and are not permitted to have sexual relations with humans, nor can they have sexual intercourse with one another. They are also unable to reproduce. Despite this, Shinigami may still carry emotions pertaining to others, be it human or shinigami. In addition, humans cannot easily tell which Shinigami are male and which Shinigami are female, although Shinigami inherently know each other's gender. Shinigami can materialize and de-materialize their bodies at will and are capable of walking through walls and other objects. The only humans that will see this phenomenon are the ones who have touched a Death Note (i.e. only contact with a Death Note will allow you to see a Shinigami). Physical attacks are useless against a Shinigami. Even if one allows you to shoot/stab them, their wounds heal almost instantaneously and they leave no apparent effects. In the past, Shinigami once needed sustenance, but due to the Shinigami realm having no consistent source of nourishment, their organs began to evolve making them no longer require it.[2] In addition, they do not require rest and will not die from a lack of sleep. Ryuk once says that Shinigami view sleeping as "evidence of laziness."

government= The King of Death rules the realm, and controls the distribution of each and every Death Note given to all Shinigami. Apart from this, it is unknown what, if any, other tasks he performs. Shinigami have rankings, with the King holding the highest rank. These rankings do not seem to affect the Shinigami's day-to-day activities very much. They also have an unknown number of laws that they follow. It is unknown who creates these laws, as well as who enforces them. If a Shinigami breaks a law, the Shinigami will face one of nine levels of punishment. The severity is lowest at Level Eight and highest at Level One, and a Shinigami will die if anything above Level Three is applied to them. Another level more severe than the rest, called the "Extreme Level" also exists. Shinigami may not kill a human in any manner outside of using a Death Note, and doing so merits the "Extreme Level" of punishment.

ranking system= Shinigami are ranked from highest to lowest, with the lowest being the more superior. It appears that higher stats contribute to a Shinigami's rank. The Shinigami King holds an unknown rank; a rank above all the others. While the system consists of numbers and all Shinigami have a different number, in the pilot series, there appears to be a different ranking system, as one Shinigami says that because Ryuk is always losing his Death Note, he is "still a C-Rank Shinigami," suggesting that there is some alternative ranking system in which multiple Shinigami can be of the same rank. Despite ranks being mentioned, it appears that ranks have no overall effect on anything in the Shinigami Realm. However, higher-ranking Shinigami tend to be closer to the King of Death.

shinigami realm=The Shinigami Realm is a barren, dry, and desolate land that is similar to the Purgatory. The realm includes different landscapes and does not have human-like buildings. Shinigami tend to congregate in areas with bone and/or stone structures. There is at least one mountain or cave structure where Ryuk lives alone which is shown in the one-shot special of the anime. The realm also includes deserts with various holes. The holes, which are shaped like concentric orbs, are littered about the surface. The artifacts have openings which let them see anywhere in the human world from a birds-eye view. These strange objects are what allow Shinigami to take human lives without traveling to Earth. The date that the holes were created is not known.

Naomi Misora (南空ナオミ, Misora Naomi) is a former FBI agent and the fiancée of agent Raye Penber. After Kira kills Raye and the other twelve FBI agents assisting L with his investigation in Japan, Naomi begins her own investigation.

appearance= Naomi is an attractive young woman with long black hair and hazel eyes. She is often seen wearing black leather clothes.

character= Described by Death Note 13: How to Read as formerly a "first rate" FBI agent with "remarkable investigative ability," Naomi left the Bureau in October 2003 for the sake of starting a family in the United States. Naomi is very intelligent. Unfortunately, she eventually lets her feelings get in the way of her investigative abilities.

history= Naomi was previously an FBI agent, and she had assisted L on the LABB case. She quit the FBI in anticipation of her marriage prior to the start of the series.

plot= After the bus jacking, Raye Penber returns home and is welcomed by his fiancée, Naomi. Penber informs her that he was caught in a bus jacking and that the busjacker was the same man who had hit a bank two days prior. He tells Naomi not to involve herself in the investigation for her own safety. After the sudden death of her fiancé a few days later, which she blames Kira for, Naomi decides to take part in the Kira case herself. Having been told by Raye that he showed his FBI badge to someone during a bus jacking, Naomi deduces that Kira must have been on the bus. In her attempts to contact the Task Force, she comes across Light Yagami. Light uses his father's status to his advantage, telling Naomi that he is Chief Yagami's son, and he slowly begins to win her trust. Cautious at first, she uses the false name Shoko Maki in order to protect herself until she can reach L. Light finally gets Naomi to reveal her name by saying that he is a member of the Task Force and is actually working with L. Taking advantage of Naomi's emotional state, Light gives the possibility that she could join the Task Force and help catch her fiancé's murderer. Light says that he will need to see a form of identification before she can join, and Naomi shows him her driver's license. Using a piece of the Death Note, Light writes down Naomi's name. When she asks him why he keeps looking at his watch, Light hesitates and then replies that he does that because he is Kira. Naomi is shocked and then realizes that Light controlled her to kill herself. She slowly walks away from Light, and when he asks her if she wants to speak to his father, Naomi refuses. Light sees her walking towards the road, and the scene switches to show her walking upstairs where there is a dangling rope at the top, implying she commits suicide by hanging herself. Her body is never found due to the specifications made by Light in the Death Note.

death note: another note= Naomi is one of the central characters and heroine in the spinoff novel Death Note: Another Note: The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases by author Nisio Isin. The story is set several years prior to the start of Death Note and focuses on a series of murder cases investigated by L with Naomi as his operative. The resulting capture of the murderer helped launch Naomi's reputation within the FBI.
