The flesh of the cactus is not very edible, but beneath the surface after a very rare desert rain, the roots swell with water. During this time, desert natives often collect one or more roots. Alchemy as it relates to magic is an ancient yet poorly understood art. It is known that the soul is the source of magic, and that only sentient beings possess a soul, and yet certain flora have been found with traces of mana within them. Alchemy is the concept of using the properties of herbs, as well as chemical reactions, to create a draught, powder, balm, or similar, which when applied or imbibed has a magical effect.

Screaming nettles are a species of nettle that grow in high elevation. The have long skiny leaves that tend to point upwards in bunches. The Screaming Nettle is named such for two reasons. One, is that when the wind blows through it, the plant creates a terrible high-pitched whispery scream-like sound. The second is that the plant produces a mana-enhanced toxin, a white thin sap, which gets into the skin whenever someone touches its prickly surface. This toxin is terribly painful. So painful that it is said men would scream through the night in agony. Furthermore though, the plant has more use. When cooked to at least 77° Celsius, the toxin breaks down into a chemical that seems to do the opposite. Cooked nettle helps relieve pain by magically inhibiting nociceptors.
