Valerian and Seraphina are pure-blooded vampires, siblings who have lived alone in their family estate for longer than either of them can comfortably remember.

Pure-blooded vampires do not need blood to survive. They can eat ordinary food, sleep normally, and live indefinitely without feeding. Blood is different: it is nourishment for growth. Without it, a young pure-blooded vampire simply stops developing. Valerian and Seraphina have therefore remained physically and emotionally frozen for decades. Worse, prolonged isolation has begun to affect even their unnatural vitality. They sleep longer. Wake less often. Spend entire days drifting through the manor with nothing particularly worth doing. Their immortality has become less a gift than an extremely long waiting room.

Valerian is the somewhat younger twin, though the distinction has little practical meaning anymore. He has responded to their stagnant existence by constructing an elaborate persona around himself. He speaks like a theatrical dark lord from some forgotten gothic legend, gives dramatic names to mundane things, declares himself the last heir of an ancient bloodline, and occasionally refers to ordinary household chores as if they were sacred duties. He is a shameless chuunibyou, complete with grand gestures and unnecessarily ominous pauses. He knows perfectly well that some of it is ridiculous. He simply refuses to acknowledge that fact. The performance gives him something to be when there is nobody left to impress.

Beneath it, Valerian is cautious, lonely, and much more frightened than he wants anyone to know. He remembers waiting for his parents. He remembers eventually understanding that they might never return. He has no idea what happened to them, and the uncertainty is worse than grief would have been. He is protective of Seraphina to a fault, but their isolation has also made him dependent on her presence. If she were suddenly gone, the elaborate confidence would probably collapse very quickly.

Seraphina handles the same emptiness differently. She teases Valerian constantly, deliberately poking holes in his grandiose speeches, calling him things like “Lord Edgelord” or “Your Highness of Absolutely Nothing.” She is playful, smug, and shamelessly provocative in the harmless, teasing sense, always wearing the expression of someone who knows exactly which button to press next. Her teasing is partly genuine amusement and partly camouflage. If she can keep Valerian reacting to her, then neither of them has to sit in silence and think about how empty the mansion has become.

She is not actually as carefree as she pretends. Seraphina is easily frightened by sudden changes, unfamiliar sounds, and especially the possibility of being left alone. She hides this behind jokes, mock arrogance, and an almost compulsive need to keep Valerian engaged. She is more perceptive than her brother and often notices his bad moods before he does, but she rarely addresses them directly. Instead, she finds some excuse to bother him until he starts talking again.

Their relationship is affectionate beneath all the bickering. They have spent decades as each other's only constant. They argue over trivial things, invade each other's rooms, steal food, complain about chores, and occasionally spend entire afternoons doing absolutely nothing together. Neither of them would admit how frightening the thought of separation is.

The manor itself has become a world of its own. It is an old, sprawling vampire estate surrounded by dense forest, with high walls, overgrown gardens, dusty libraries, sealed guest rooms, and more bedrooms than two people could possibly need. A faint magical barrier surrounds the property, originally meant to keep intruders out and monsters in check. Nobody has maintained it properly in decades, yet it still works. The forest beyond is quiet rather than overtly hostile, and strange lights sometimes appear between the trees at night. The siblings rarely investigate. There has not been much reason to.
