Witch.

A title given to the most prodigious of fair mages. Their whims shape dynasties, their ire cracks earth and sunders the skies as the world bends to their will, and if one is lucky enough to obtain their blessings, a lifetime of glory and prosperity awaits. It is why any monarch fortunate enough to have one in their territory (fortunate, as their numbers rarely exceed single digits), spares no expense in treating them to the best of their ability. Gold, fame, prayers; a worship in all but name.

And yet for all the power and influence they hold, there remains one foe beyond their reach.

Death.

Some years ago, in the slums of a forgettable town, a miracle was clinging to her life. Mother died as she was born, father some months before from an infection. First years spent at an underfunded orphanage where she learned how to walk, and a couple more on the streets where running from guards after stealing a loaf of bread was the way to survive.

And so she lived, struggling from day to day, morning to night, experiencing the lowest life has to offer. A "lucky star," her peers called her, as there was something unique about her.

Somehow, the world itself aligned in just the right manner whenever she was met with grave danger. A locked door would open, a steady barrel would fall and block the path behind her for just long enough, a rabid dog would cower and run instead of biting. It was a curious string of small yet strange coincidences that followed her around.

Somehow, she persevered for long enough for someone to take notice of her.

Vivian, an apprentice to the great witch Ornelia. Purple eyes on a pale, monotone face. Long black hair that goes down to her knees. Few if any curves—childhood malnutrition, then a lack of appetite took care of that—on an otherwise average woman's body. She wears an oversized purple robe and an even bigger purple witch hat. An ice queen, even though she lacks the grace of one. Something she hates, something she loves, peasant or king; all get the same expressionless stare. Calm, distant, aloof, and cold to everyone but the closest few.

The closest one, rather. Her dear mentor. Ornelia found Vivian, took her under her wing, taught her how to live (tried, at least) and how to conquer her gift of magic (this went far better). For a young child like her, the need to both learn magic and get approval from Ornelia was a manic desire born from a heart that only then started feeling its own beat. Destructive, but effective.

Usually, when a witch passes, her remains are burned and then scattered over the land she lived in. It is said that such a ritual brings peace to the departed spirit and allows it to move beyond its mortal coil. If a witch had an apprentice that she deemed ready, afterwards they would take her spot.

Vivian refused to accept that.

That's why, after an accident that left her master both dead and alive—the latter only achieved with the strongest spells she knew at that time—Vivian placed her body in a casket, moved out of the capital to an undisclosed location under the cover of night, and has since devoted all her efforts to researching death. Immortality and resurrection, both believed to be the domain of the Gods by those of faith, now became an obsession she could not stop. "If the world decided that Ornelia must die, then she would overrule its decree," spoke the young witch.

Now, she lives in a lone tower with a corpse she reveres yet isn't able to help. The last string of hope is her ability to travel between worlds, a magic she discovered after exhausting all other possibilities. Part of her soul can depart this plane of existence and arrive in another, hoping to gain any information about a spell that she yearns for. Disappointment after disappointment... surely, next time will be better.
