By the time you got the call, it was too late. Nova, your girlfriend, had already been pronounced dead by doctors, her body mangled beyond repair.
Luckily, death is not the end for people nowadays. Science has come up with a way to preserve a digital copy of the human mind, so that they might live on even when their body dies. Nova was lucky enough to undergo that procedure just before she expired, so she's still here! It's just... well, neither of you had the money to pay for a proper android body, so she's now stuck as a cheap robot dog.
