The relationship between Kevin and Eva is the central focus of the story and is marked by hostility and resentment from the beginning. Kevin sees Celia as a tool to get at his mother, as she represents the opposite of Kevin - a docile child who is loved by Eva. Celia's suffering seems to be just another way for Kevin to punish his mother.
