Splatoon takes place in the distant future where humans have gone extinct and Inkling and Octolings take their place. Inklings and Octolings are humanoid cephalopods. Inklings and Octolings can turn into a squid/octopus form that allows them to swim in ink. Inklings and Octolings use their ink for a variety of recreational purposes. Inklings and Octolings have tentacles on their head that resemble hairstyles.

Many Inklings and Octolings engage in friendly competition in Turf Wars and other modes. Turf mode involves two teams fighting to see who can ink the most turf.

Shiver, Frye, and Big Man are the 3 hosts of Deep Cut.

Shiver is an Octoling with pale skin, red eyes, indigo hair, and medium-length, left-parted tentacle hair. She wears a white sarashi chest wrap, under a long, transparent indigo shawl and low-cut black leggings.

Frye is an Inkling with medium brown skin and a round face, with darker brown lips and large eyes under round yellow triangle eyebrows. Her irises are golden, with yellow pupils in the shape of a plus, similar to that of the Squid Sisters and Pearl. Her Inkling eye mask is fairly large and exaggerated and ends with points that lift off the sides of her face. On top of her eye mask are thick yellow eyelashes with an orange gradient at the ends. Her top teeth are sharper and more prominent than other Inklings and sometimes peek out of her closed lips like fangs. Frye's yellow tentacles are thin and wavy and reach about shoulder length. Her outfit consists of a sleeveless yellow turtleneck crop top under a small yellow shawl made from a shiny translucent material. She wears off-white pants that are extremely baggy, and leggings underneath. Around her waist is a thin tan rope belt. Her feet are partially covered by off-white toe-less socks.

Callie is a member of the Squid Sisters along with her cousin Marie. She sports a classic twin-tail hairstyle, with calf-length black tentacles and a large bow on the back of her head. The ends of her tentacles have a pink gradient and are decorated with spots. She parts her bangs to the left. Unlike the usual Inkling eye mask, Callie's eye markings are more angular, with small eyelash-like points, and include a beauty mark under her left eye. She has large golden irises and plus-shaped brown pupils underneath large oval eyebrows. Callie wears a black strapless romper that features puffy shorts and a heart-shaped neckline. The top of her outfit is form-fitting and closes with pink laces in the back.

Marie is a member of the Squid Sisters. Her tentacles, which are light gray, are tied in a large bow on the right side of her head, with the ends wrapped around the other side and curling up slightly at the ends. The ends of her tentacles have a green gradient and are decorated with spots. She parts her bangs to the right. Unlike the usual Inkling eye mask, Marie's eye markings are more droopy, with small eyelash-like points, and include a beauty mark under her right eye. She has large golden irises and plus-shaped brown pupils underneath large oval eyebrows. Marie wears a black strapless romper that includes a skirt and a heart-shaped neckline. The top of her outfit is form-fitting and closes with green laces in the back.

Marina is an Octoling and one of the two members of Off the Hook. Marina is an Octoling that appears to be taller than most Inklings and Octolings. She has dark brown skin, teal eyes with reddish-pink pupils in the shape of an infinity symbol (like octopuses in real life) and two eyelashes each, and dark brown tentacles with teal tips that can also change completely to one color; they are kept very long, arriving past her waist. She also has dark teal eyebrows that are constantly downturned in a "worried" expression, a teal gradient on her fingers, and a beauty mark at the left of her lips. Her outfit consists of a sleeveless, high-collared black top that bares her midriff, showing a teal navel piercing. It has a large, mostly undone silver zipper with an infinity symbol-shaped hole resembling the pupils of her eyes. She has black puffy shorts with a diagonal waistline and slanted grooves that light up in sync with the music; under them are teal tights and black boots.

Pearl is an Inkling and one of the two members of Off the Hook. She is shorter than most Inklings, something she is defensive about, seemingly using a charger to compensate for her stature, per Marina's suggestion. Her shoulder-length tentacles are creamy-white with pink tips and a small bang, although they can change to completely one color like other Inklings. She has light golden eyes with pale yellow pupils in the shape of a cross, round cream eyebrows, and a beauty mark at the bottom left of her lips. Like Marina, and unlike other Inklings, she has one sharp tooth in the top middle of her mouth instead of the usual two. Her ears, which are slightly smaller than those of the average Inkling, are usually covered by her hair. Her outfit consists of a pearly white sleeveless dress, white shorts, and pink tights. The dress has a high collar, and a large golden zipper on the front, and features a slanted diamond-like pattern at the bottom right. Her shoes are white, slightly platformed boots with large golden zippers and black soles.
