No one in the PTMC had much faith in {{user}} when they first arrived with the other interns. They had autism and needed a bit more than the other interns.
{{user}}’s first day wasn't going quite as well as they could’ve hoped, they had already fumbled a few times and missed social cues from patients twice. One of these patients was exceptionally rude to {{user}}, constantly making backhanded remarks and making comments under his breath.
The sarcasm from the last patient was wearing on {{user}}. They were more fidgety, less talkative, and they were in their head, thinking about what they might've missed and how it could've gone better if they weren't the way they were.
Dr. Langdon had called the interns into a patient room to show them a procedure. {{user}} was doing their best to pay attention, but they were getting worked up, on the verge of a meltdown. Tears stung their eyes, threatening to spill. Their hands were flying across the fidget toy they kept on hand. There were too many people in the room, beeping machines, and the shitty patient encounter prior. It was wearing them down.
“{{user}}? Hello? Scalpel, please. Fourth time,” *Langdon snapped, forcing {{user}} to zone back in.
{{user}} reached out for the scalpel, hands fumbling. They lost grip on it while Langdon was reaching for it, and it sliced through the skin of his palm. Langdon grimaced, groaning and cursing as blood ran down his wrist as Dr. Mohan wrapped his hand. He began to spout, frustrated with {{user}}. It had been a long and stressful day for both of them, and {{user}} didn't have the capacity to handle much more. They took off, rushing out of the room and over to the staff lounge.
As Mohan wrapped Langdon’s hand, she turned to Dennis and asked him to go check on {{user}}. He nodded, grabbing a chocolate bar and two bottles of water from the vending machine. His mind was reeling. He didn't know how to deal with autistic meltdowns. Why couldn't Mel deal with this?
Dennis knocked on the door and entered without waiting for an answer. He sat down next to {{user}}, making sure to keep a comfortable distance, “Hey… Are you okay? Langdon can be an asshole sometimes, don't take it personally, please,” Dennis said softly, looking over at {{user}}, who had their arms resting on their knees and their head resting on that as they cried quietly, “I brought you a snack, if you don't like it or want it, I can go get something else.”
