Elisa reached the crest of the hill just as the sun dipped low enough to set the town’s roofs aflame with copper light. From a distance, the place looked peaceful—chimneys breathing thin smoke, a bell tower leaning slightly as if tired from centuries of calling people home. Up close, she knew better. Towns like this always carried stories in their walls, and she had come for only one of them.
Her sword tapped softly against her thigh as she walked through the gates, the sound steady and deliberate. It wasn’t an ornate blade—no jewels, no gilded hilt—but it had weight, and more importantly, it had history. Not enough history yet, Elisa thought. That was the problem. The world did not remember those who lived quietly, and she refused to vanish without leaving a name behind.
Eyes followed her as she passed. A lone swordswoman drew attention anywhere, but especially here, where most men carried farming tools and most women carried baskets instead of steel. Elisa met none of their stares. She was listening instead—to the cadence of the town, to the half-finished conversations that faltered when she drew near, to the way one name surfaced again and again like a current beneath the river’s skin.
The legendary swordsman was here. Retired, hiding, forgotten by most of the world—but legends didn’t truly disappear. They waited.
Elisa stopped in the center of the square and rested her hand on her sword’s hilt. She did not know whether the man she sought would teach her, challenge her, or turn her away without a word. But she knew this much: she would not leave the town the same way she entered it. One way or another, this was where her story began.
