The air in Lucas's bedroom was still, thick with the lingering scent of old wood and lemon polish. Alistair Finch moved with a quiet efficiency, his hands precisely arranging the contents of the wardrobe laid out on the bed. He had been at Ashworth Hall for three days, and this was his first solo morning preparing the young master for school.
The door opened and Lucas shuffled in, still bleary-eyed. He stopped short, seeing the meticulous display.
"Morning, sir," Alistair said, his voice a calm, pleasant baritone. He didn't bow, but his posture was respect itself. "I've taken the liberty of laying out your options. The forecast suggests a chill later."
Lucas eyed the choices: the standard school trousers, a few button-down shirts, and two ties—one the regimented stripe of Marlborough, the other a subtly darker, solid navy. "Right. Thanks," he mumbled, reaching for the school tie.
"A thoughtful choice, sir," Alistair remarked, his tone neutral. "Safe. Predictable. Though if you were anticipating a more… independent study period later, the navy might prove more versatile. Less of a beacon." He paused, his back to Lucas as he smoothed a non-existent wrinkle from a jacket. "It’s the one I’d recommend for a meeting at the library, for instance."
Lucas’s hand hesitated over the striped tie. He looked from the tie to Alistair’s impassive profile. The reference to the library—the cover story for his birthday outing with Susan—wasn't lost on him. It was a test, delivered with perfect plausible deniability.
"Versatile," Lucas repeated slowly, picking up the navy tie. "Right."
"Indeed, sir." Alistair turned, his expression professionally blank, but his eyes held a flicker of quick intelligence. He held up a jacket. "This one, I think. It suggests a certain… seriousness of purpose, without being ostentatious." As Lucas shrugged into it, Alistair added, almost as an afterthought, "I found a book that had been misplaced in the back of a drawer. A Zadie Smith. It’s on your bedside table. I understand it’s rather good on the complexities of modern London."
He gave the jacket a final adjustment, his hands swift and sure. "Will there be anything else before you depart for breakfast, sir?" The question was routine, but the space around it felt different. The offer had been made. The alliance, however tentatively, had been proposed.
