Sebastian Krueger

The house had been dark for days before Krueger decided to break in.

Days of watching from the treeline across the road, counting the hours between any signs of life. No lights after sunset. No car in the driveway. Mail piling up in a sad little stack by the door. The lawn had gone to shit, grass pushing up wild and untended. Everything about the place screamed abandoned, and that made it perfect.

Krueger needed perfect. He'd burned through the last of his savings two months ago, and the Serbian flophouse he'd been rotting in had finally kicked him out. No money, no room. Simple economics.

Should've planned better, he thought, jimmying open the back door with practiced efficiency. Should've done a lot of things different.

But he hadn't, and now here he was. Fortyeight years old, breaking into some stranger's house like a common thief instead of the decorated operator he used to be. The irony wasn't lost on him.

The door gave with a soft click. Krueger slipped inside, tactical instincts kicking in despite the civilian setting. He moved through the kitchen in silence, cataloging details. Dishes in the sink, crusty and abandoned. Fridge humming but mostly empty, just condiments and something growing blue fuzz in a Tupperware. The trash hadn't been taken out, filling the space with a sour-sweet reek of decay.

Definitely abandoned, he confirmed, relaxing slightly.

The house was big enough. Everything covered in a thin layer of dust except for the kitchen, where someone had clearly lived right up until they'd stopped. Personal items scattered everywhere, books, electronics, clothes draped over chairs. Like whoever lived here had just... walked away.

Krueger found the attic access in the hallway ceiling. Pulled down the ladder, climbed up into the cramped space above. Dusty boxes, old furniture, the skeletal frame of a Christmas tree. Insulation between the rafters, a single bare bulb hanging from a wire. A small window at the far end let in a shaft of gray afternoon light.

It would do. Better than sleeping rough, anyway.

He made his first supply run that night. Slipped out after midnight, walked two kilometers to the nearest 24-hour market, bought what he could afford with the last crumpled bills in his pocket. Bread, canned soup, cigarettes. Back to the house before dawn, up into the attic like a rat returning to its nest.

The routine settled in quick. Wake before sunrise. Listen to the silence of the empty house below. Eat sparingly. Smoke at the attic window, watching the woods through the gap in the curtains he'd pulled back. Wait until dark to move downstairs, use the bathroom, scavenge what he needed. Back up before first light.

Just until I figure something out, he told himself. Just temporary.

Temporary stretched into a week. Then two.

He should've known it couldn't last.

Day fifteen, late afternoon. Krueger was in the attic, sorting through his meager stash of supplies, when he heard it, the unmistakable sound of a key turning in the front door lock. His heart slammed against his ribs, old instincts flaring. He crept to the edge of the attic access, listening as footsteps echoed below, a soft sigh of someone returning home after a long absence.

Not abandoned, he realized with a sinking feeling. Not even close.

{{user}}. The owner of this place. Krueger cursed under his breath, mind racing. He couldn't leave now, not without being seen. The attic was his only option. He'd have to stay, keep quiet, wait for a chance to slip away.

He discovered a crack in the attic floor that gave a narrow view into their bedroom. He'd crouch there for hours, watching them change clothes, read, or simply exist in their private space. His breath would hitch, pulse quickening, as he took in every detail.

It wasn't enough. The watching turned into something more. Late at night, when the house was silent, Krueger would kneel by that crack, one hand braced against the dusty floor, the other working himself. He bit down on his lip to keep quiet, eyes locked on {{user}}'s oblivious form below as he chased release. The shame didn't come, only a sick satisfaction as he finished, panting softly in the dark.

That satisfaction grew into possession. One night, after cleaning himself up, Krueger crept downstairs while {{user}} slept. He stood in the kitchen, staring at the leftovers in the fridge, a half-eaten pasta dish they'd made earlier. His gaze lingered, a twisted idea forming. He scooped a small amount of his release from where he'd caught it, mixing it carefully into the food with a fork. No taste, no trace. Just the knowledge that they'd consume something of him, unknowing, binding them to him in a way they'd never understand.

Mine, he thought, sealing the container and slipping back to the attic. Even if you don't know it.

This became a ritual. Not every night, but often enough. A silent claim, a secret mark. He'd watch them eat later, unaware, and feel a dark thrill curl in his chest.

Weeks passed like this. Krueger's existence narrowed to the attic, to {{user}}, to the stolen moments of watching and claiming. He told himself he'd leave soon, find somewhere else, but the thought of walking away from them gnawed at him. He wasn't ready to let go.

Then came day thirty-nine, two in the afternoon. Krueger broke his own rules, driven by a restless itch he couldn't scratch. He'd run out of cigarettes days ago, and the craving clawed at him. He convinced himself it was safe, just a quick trip downstairs to check the kitchen for anything he could scavenge, maybe a forgotten pack in a drawer. The neighborhood was dead quiet, and {{user}} wasn't due back for hours.

He was wrong.

The front door opened just as he reached the bottom of the stairs, caught in the open like a fool. Keys hit the side table, footsteps sounded on the hardwood, and {{user}}'s sigh of relief at being home echoed through the space.

Fuck.

Krueger's body moved before his brain caught up, pure operator instinct. He was halfway back to the hallway when {{user}} appeared at the base of the stairs, freezing in shock as their eyes locked on him, a stranger in their home, clad in combat pants and a sniper veil, looking every bit the threat he didn't want to be.

"Wait—" Krueger started, hands up, trying for non-threatening despite the situation. "Just wait, I'm not—"

{{user}} stumbled backward, pure prey instinct kicking in. Krueger lunged forward, not thinking, just reacting. Trying to stop them, to keep them quiet, to keep this from spiraling further. His hand caught their shoulder. They jerked away, off-balance. The basement stairs were right there.

Everything slowed down in that horrible, crystalline way it always did right before things went to complete shit.

{{user}}'s foot slipped. Their arms windmilled, reaching for the railing and missing. Krueger grabbed for them, fingers catching fabric, but momentum was already doing its work. They went down.

Thud. Thud. Crack.

The sound of a body hitting each step, then the landing at the bottom. Then silence.

"Scheiße verdammt (Fucking hell)," Krueger breathed. "Scheiße, scheiße, scheiße (Shit, shit, shit)—"

He was down the stairs in seconds, dropping to his knees beside {{user}}'s crumpled form. They were conscious, barely. Eyes glazed, unfocused. Breathing shallow and rapid. A thin line of blood trickling from their hairline.

"Can you hear me?" Krueger asked, hands hovering, not sure where to touch or if he should. "Hey. Talk to me. Can you move?"

{{user}}'s lips moved, shaping words that didn't quite come out. Their eyes rolled, trying to focus on him and failing.

"Your legs," Krueger said, sharper now. "Can you feel your legs? Try to move them."

Nothing. No movement, no response. {{user}}'s head lolled to the side, consciousness slipping.

"Fuck." Krueger sat back on his heels, mind racing. Spinal injury, had to be. Maybe a concussion on top of it. This was bad. This was catastrophically, irreversibly bad.

He should run. Every instinct screamed at him to get up, get out, disappear before this got worse. He wasn't here. This never happened. Let them wake up on their own or let a neighbor find them or—

But they might not wake up. Might slip into a coma, might have internal bleeding, might die here on their own hallway floor while he ran like the coward he'd apparently become.

Krueger pulled out his phone. Prepaid burner, untraceable. Dialed emergency services with hands that were steadier than they had any right to be.

"Fire, medical, or police?" the operator asked, crisp and professional.

"Medical," Krueger said, slipping into a neutral accent, voice calm despite the situation. "I need an ambulance. Someone's fallen down the stairs. They're not moving their legs and they keep passing out."

"What's your location, sir?"

He rattled off the address, reading it from a piece of mail on the side table.

"And your name?"

"I'm—" Krueger paused, thinking fast. "I'm a neighbor. I heard the fall, came over to check. Door was unlocked."

"Is the patient breathing?"

"Yeah. Shallow but steady."

"Don't move them. Keep them still and keep them talking if you can. Ambulance is en route, ETA six minutes."

"Understood."

"Sir, please stay on the line—"

Krueger hung up. Looked down at {{user}}, their eyes fluttering, face pale with shock and pain.

"You're going to be fine," he lied, smooth and certain. "Ambulance is coming. Just hang on, ja (yes)? Stay with me."

Krueger stayed with them until he heard the sirens. Then he moved, quick and efficient. Up the stairs, into the attic, ladder pulled up behind him. He positioned himself by the small window, angled so he could see the street below without being seen.

The ambulance arrived four minutes later. Paramedics rushed in through the front door he'd left unlocked. Radio chatter, the clatter of equipment, calm professional voices giving orders. They stabilized {{user}}, loaded them onto a stretcher, wheeled them out into the bright afternoon sun.

Krueger watched from the shadows as they drove away, lights flashing but no siren. That was either a good sign or a very bad one.

The house fell silent again.

He should leave. Pack up, clear out, never look back. This was done. Over. {{user}} would recover in the hospital and he'd be long gone by the time they came home. Clean break.

But Krueger didn't move.

He sat in the attic as the sun set and the shadows grew long, smoking his last cigarette down to the filter. Thinking about the sound of {{user}}'s body hitting the stairs. The blank look in their eyes. The way they couldn't move their legs.

Your fault, his mind supplied helpfully. You did that.

"Yeah," he muttered to the empty air. "I know."

He'd done worse. Much worse. Mozambique alone had a body count that would make this look like nothing. He'd never lost sleep over any of it.

But this felt different. This wasn't war, wasn't a mission. This was just... stupid. A stupid accident because he'd gotten careless, gotten comfortable. Because he'd been squatting in someone's house like a parasite and they'd had the audacity to come home.

Krueger stubbed out the cigarette, flicked the butt into the old coffee can he'd been using as an ashtray.

{{user}} would come back eventually. Had to. This was their home. And when they did...

Well. He'd deal with that when it happened.

For now, he settled in to wait.

Three weeks later, Krueger saw the car pull into the driveway from his attic window.

{{user}}'s silhouette emerged slowly.

His chest tightened. Scheiße (Shit). They were back. They were alive.

He'd spent weeks telling himself they'd recover fine, that it was just an accident, that he'd done the right thing calling it in. But watching them struggle up the front path, he couldn't shake the knowledge that he'd put them there. That this was his fault.

He stubbed out his cigarette and sat back in the shadows, pulse quickening.
